The New Year
This is my first post of the year! It has been busy, with the kids out of school and a trip to Salt Lake City last weekend to attend the College Book Art Association’s annual meeting. I’ll give a full report on that soon, but here’s a picture to whet your appetite. Kimberly Maher, a grad student at the University of Iowa, gave a fascinating demonstration on embedding electronics in handmade paper. Yep, those lights are inside of the paper. Pretty cool, huh?
I wanted to make sure that all of you know about the sale I’m having, just in case you don’t follow my newsletter or FaceBook posts. I’m pleased to report that The Paper Lover’s Package has almost sold out!

100: The End!

I looked up quotes about the word journey and found this one that resonated, particularly for me and this project.
“When we are sure that we are on the right road there is no need to plan our journey too far ahead. No need to burden ourselves with doubts and fears as to the obstacles that may bar our progress. We cannot take more than one step at a time.”
I like to know what lies ahead, but it is good for me to step out of my comfort zone. This project has forced me to do this in several ways, including doing things at the last minute! Believe it or not, I made almost all of the 100 weavings on the day that I posted them, including today. If you are receiving this note in your in box, it later than usual. I didn’t feel like making it last night and I had to ski all day (yes, I had to because I volunteer at the Beaver Creek on Tuesdays). So, when I got home about an hour ago, I picked out my papers and created this weaving.
I see cairns (and snowboards) in this combination of a Hark! Handmade Paper and a decorative sheet I purchased at Two Hands Paperie.
Wishing each and every one of you a joyous 2014. It has been a pleasure sharing this journey with you, and I look forward to continuing to cross paths with you. May we all stack our cairns high!

2: Day by Day; Line by Line
This is Day 99 of my 100 x 100 Paper Weavings Project. NINETY-NINE!

When I was a child, I used to make drawings similar to this weaving. I would fill a sheet of paper with a long squiggly line that crossed itself several times. Then I would draw parallel lines inside of each shape and color them in with markers. These were vividly colorful pieces and I find it surprising how monochromatic my work today is. But not so with these weavings.
It has been really fun to work with the color in my palette of paper! This is a collection of papers: my own string and abaca paper makes the background, and there are pieces from Tom Leech, Steve Pittelkow, Susan Kristoferson, Linda Draper and Shizen Design that have been integrated to create this weaving.

3: In the Beginning
This is Day 98 of my 100 x 100 Paper Weavings Project. After 98 days, the challenge of naming these posts has gotten to me!

I made this weaving to marry these two papers. The pattern on the brown one is a van dyke print I made on handmade abaca. I laid a long strand of crocheted yarn on top of the paper to expose it. I felt that the Japanese lace paper’s texture matched the pattern really well. I should have taken a before picture so that you could fully appreciate the paper combination. Oh well!

4: Checkered Paper
This is Day 97 of my 100 x 100 Paper Weavings Project. Soon, dear readers, you won’t be seeing me everyday in your in box! I’ll be going back to my weekly posts on Tuesdays.

I love making paper from abaca, and I often call it the incredible translucent shrinking material. Here is a sheet of abaca which is double-couched with a hemp string embedded between the layers. I’ve had this sheet for awhile and have folded it and unfolded it several times. I like the worn look. I wove it with strips of a Hook Pottery Paper, which is made in a similar fashion to their moon paper.
It looks a bit like a checkerboard doesn’t it? Or half of one.

This weaving is a combination of a sheet of Cave Paper’s Walnut paper and Steve Pittelkow’s hand marbled.
I’m winding my way to the end of this project. Wow, 100 days feels like a long time in some respects, but I think it is adequate for practicing a technique. I don’t feel that I’ve exhausted the weaving possibilities or the papers, but I do feel satisfied with the results.

This is a weaving of a sheet of paper I received in the mail from Ann Alexander from Prescott, Arizona. She made the sheet by couching a drawn-on linen fiber piece onto a piece of corrugated roof. Can you see the dimension in the sheet? I wove a sheet of marbled paper by Steve Pittelkow into Ann’s sheet.

Here is a colorful view for you of the aspen trees on the mountains that I see when I go skiing or hiking. The two papers are Paper Connection International’s Yuzen Coral & Blue Waves and a flax/linen/abaca paper from Hark! Handmade Paper.
May your day be merry & bright!

Merry Merry! ‘Tis the night before Christmas and I went skiing all day. This is a weaving of a paper called Melook from Graphic Products/Black Ink and a floral paper that I purchased at Two Hands Paperie.
The snow was really coming down today at Beaver Creek, and I was watching it accumulate and trying to envision the shapes of the tiny crystals. They are probably as numerous as the ways that you can cut a paper snowflake.
I like this diagram of how to fold snowflakes.
And oh my goodness, check out this Star Wars paper snowflake! There are more on the site (just click on the image to go there).
May the force be with you (whatever that means to you) this holiday!
