If you can’t be sure of a good apple…
(I’m enjoying these “classic posts.” This one was from 2008)
Maybe you can at least avoid some of the rotten ones.
More specifically in terms of relationships, we may not be able to come up with a way to ensure success. But we can probably look at some things that raise the chances of success–or pretty much guarantee failure. Each of the following has doomed at least two relationships I know of:
1) Track record. If you have to ignore the person’s track record with relationships… watch out....

The connection between “The Morning Ritual” and “The Machine”
I’ve been talking about both these things, and wanted to pause and make it more explicit. I’m just a guy who wanted a particular kind of life. I was terrified that I wouldn’t be able to create a life of meaning, and knew that if I couldn’t do that, my life would implode in fear and bitterness. I remember the day a bully chased me out into the middle of the street–the only place I was safe, even though there were cars and trucks whizzing past on both sides. HERE, IN THE MIDDLE OF DANGER,...

For the next two weeks: Lifewriting Premium is open again!
“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare”–Audre Lorde, poet and activist
Finally, the moment we’ve been waiting for: Lifewriting Premium is open again! ONLY ONE DOLLAR FOR THE FIRST MONTH! Only $27 a month thereafter! It will be open until March 1st (my birthday!) and when it closes, it closes again until summer!
Why? So that we can actually HELP the people who register! Look at all we’ve got lined up.
Every month...
Re-stating a basic path
I wanted to re-state the process of growth in this hyper-politicized atmosphere:
Love yourself. Take care of yourself. Protect yourself. When stress becomes strain, you develop tunnel vision, go into “survival” and cannot see resources that are right in front of you. Fear dominates, and the “all is lost” switch is stuck in the “on” position. Sad to watch. Suggestion: 15-20 minutes of heartbeat meditation, and/or a morning ritual of movement, gratitude, and focus on outcomes. Love an...February 8, 2017

My goal is ONE MILLION AWAKE AWARE ADULT HUMAN BEINGS. The “Householder Yogi” approach is to be “in the world but not of the world”…to be rooted in consensus reality, to “win” this game: (physically healthy and fit, loving and bonded and raising a family, providing goods and services to your community that support you comfortably, creating financial...

Dreading Valentine’s Day? No more!
This note is for those who have not yet found love. If you are one of the lucky ones, please pass it to someone still in the search!

I have enough flaws. I don’t need yours.
My little sister Talitha, who is far more political or Conservative than yours truly (in one sense, Philosophy is the study of “what is?”. Politics is the science of mobilizing forces to achieve something. In an argument, a philosopher wants to know what is true. A politician or politicized person just wants to know how to win. The former can support the latter, but the latter corrupts the former) posted something Conservative folks on her page said about me: “Talitha, is there a sun...
Remove one lie every day
(a post from 2008. Still valuable. Touches on that “I don’t have to run faster than the bear. I just have to run faster than YOU” that is such a part of the real world)
“I’ve always felt that men and women with a wretched relationship history are merely externalizing something damaged within themselves. There are plenty of great men and women out there. The fact that statistics show a shortage of one or the other in some specific age range, income range, or context has a lot to do with grou...

Love yourself, love another
The Path of the householder goes from caring for yourself to expanding to others. From mastery of the mundane to challenging the infinite. From “Who am I?” to “What is True?” and back.
Woe unto those who try to handle this in a different order. Just last week, there were at least three people panicking and getting swallowed by fear and anger. “Why can’t people just love each other!” they rage. “I hate these irrational people so much I can’t see straight!” they foam.
Ummm…the answer i...

Pair Bonding and Spirituality
(Everything I teach concerns the quality of being “in the world, but not of the world”, the path of the Householder Yogi. My path. Whether the subject is fitness, martial arts, writing, marketing, politics, or personal growth and balance of any kind, its all about how to succeed HERE but remember that our ultimate quest is spiritual, not material. As February is Valentine’s Month, I thought I’d share a “classic” post from 2006 about relationships)
