Transitions

“Transitions are a part of life, allowing for perpetual renewal. When you experience the end of one chapter, allow yourself to feel the emotions of loss and rebirth.

A bud gives way to a new flower, which surrenders to the fruit, which gives rise to a seed, which yields a new sprout. Even as you ride the roller coaster, embrace the centered internal reference of the ever-present witness.”

-David SimonOne of the More curious times in the creation of raku pottery

Is the change that occurs during a glaze firing. Beforehand, we set up the firing scenario to be in the best possible situation to reach a certain result, but once the kiln and reduction containers are closed

it is up to the fates.

It is with this in mind, that we bring you “Transitions.”

God is a Woman

In honour of International Women’s Day, we would like to share the story of Amaterasu once again.

This story (and many others) are available in our first book “A Potter’s Dream: Myths and Legends” and you can check out another vase inspired by a sun god here.

This vase tells the tale Of an exceptional deity among the pantheons of ancient gods

Amaterasu is one of the few female solar gods. Her full name means ‘Great Divinity Illuminating Heaven’ and she is one of the principal gods in the Shinto religion.

Here we tell one of the more interesting stories of this great beauty that involve her petulant and mischievous brother, Susanoo, a defiled crafting room, a goddess in hiding, 800 plotting gods, more roosters than Colonel Saunders would know what to do with, a partial strip tease and a clever trick.

Susanoo must have been going through his teenager years in this story, because he was out of control, messing with the rice fields, and his sister’s home. Amaterasu had finally had enough when he decided to throw a flayed horse into her weaving hall. Apparently she took her craft pretty seriously, so she decided to hide in a cave.

This of course presented a problem.

I did mention that Amaterasu was the Shinto sun god. Things got pretty dark at this point in the story, with the world being plunged into darkness and all. This was such a big problem that 800 myriads of gods got together to sort out a solution to coax Amaterasu out of the cave.

Can you imagine 800 myriads of gods searching for roosters? The gods assembled all the cocks they could find in front of the cave and propped up a mirror and some jewelry in front of the cave. Another goddess, Amenouzume wanted to get the crowd of gods going, so she turned over a tub to act as her impromptu stage, partially disrobed and started dancing.

AmaterasuThe gods were delighted

To see the show and were laughing and having a good time, and Amaterasu was puzzled as to how everyone could be so happy while the world was in darkness.

To complete their plan, the gods told Amaterasu that there was a god more illustrious and beautiful than she was outside of the cave. Both shocked and curious, she peaked outside of the cave and is if on cue, all those roosters started to crow, and then she saw her reflection in the mirror and was thus lured out of the cave.

She Didn’t Win The Race, But Still Left The Competition In Flames

Today’s raku pottery vase

Madame Pele’s Flow‘, tells the tale of a sometimes beautiful goddess who was right at home in the flames of raku. Not only could she sometimes appear as a beautiful woman, but also a white dog, even an old woman, but also a lava flow.

I wonder what picture she used on her tinder profile, and how many of her suitors got burned!

Sale Price$124 – 10% = $112
Shipping Included in Canada and US
After reading this story, I don’t think any of her suitors will be asking her to go dutch!

Madame Pele, or Tutu Pele, has become well known for her power, passion, beauty and jealousy over the years. It makes you wonder why someone would challenge her to a race.

You just know someone is going to go down in this, the original flame war.It was time again for the ever popular and fun houla races!

A houla is a wooden sled that is used to slide down steep stone slopes. A certain skilled houla rider, Papalauahi, was renowned for his skills. Bored by mediocre competition, he and the other chiefs decided to challenge Pele to a race.

Much to the delight of Papalauahi, he coasted easily to victory in the race, much to the cheers and applause of the other chiefs and spectators.

But this was not to be a ‘cool’ running.

Hell hath no fury like a god scorned!

Papalauahi might have been a mighty chief who won the race, but the victory party would become the hottest even on the island. Madame Pele in her rage would release a great flow of red hot lava that would overwhelm many of the spectators and chiefs, proving the age old advice of don’t play with fire – or a volcano goddess!

We can still see traces of the momentous race that occurred in lower Puna. Where stone trees/pillars of the those consumed by lava still stand today.

I guess they won’t be winning races anytime soon . . . or at all.

What did you think of today’s vase story? How do you like today’s raku pottery vase ‘Madame Pele’s Flow’?

This vase, and other raku vases are all 10% off, but only until March 7th!
