Lying In A Pit And Looking At The Sky

Pit firing is the first method that humans used to fire pottery almost 30,000 years ago.

It was considered a great milestone in the development of civilization – in part because people were tired of drinking their wine out of wooden buckets.

With such an interesting story behind these pieces, and their ethereal smokey qualities with small splashes of textures and depth, pit-fired pottery makes a welcome gift for someone who likes unique and eclectic pieces.

I find looking at them is a relaxing experience akin to laying on my back and looking at shapes in the clouds.

Check out our selection of pit fired pieces here and see how it is made here.

The Magic of Raku

One of the things that I love about pottery is the magic of raku. The Alchemist’s Studio is a magical place!Raku is a real game changer.

The kinds of effects you can get from this process are unlike those you can get from conventional firing techniques. You can learn more about how we fire our raku pottery here!

As an added bonus

The effects are unique and one of a kind to each piece.  While you may be able to reproduce a general overall effect, you can not reproduce identical pieces.  You can click on any of the titles of these raku pottery vases for more information

Fractal Magic

The patterns of the cracking on the glaze is very magical and intrigues me.

Diana’s Hunt

I find that using certain reduction materials can cause some very interesting multi-coloured textural effects.

Playing Musical Vases – Sobek’s Tears

Gotta song that you think
goes with one of our vases?

We invite you to Add yours
in the comments!
Press Play 👆

then Read along 👇

Sobek’s Tears, tells the story of an aggressive and fearless god who not only controlled the waters of the Nile, but also suffered from hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). As the Egyptian god of fertility and water he was both adored and feared, for he could often side with chaos.

$90
Includes Shipping in US and Canada

As Sobek was busy helping to create the world and laying eggs along what would be the banks of the Nile, his sweat would become the mighty river. Good thing there was not yet a pill for that.

Sobek was thought to protect both the Pharoah and even some of the gods. It is thought that he assisted the venerable Isis during the childbirth of Horus. He also saved Horus’ four children in his net when they emerged from a lotus flower in the Nile.

This may explain why temple complexes devoted to him often had their own pond, complete with their own crocodile that was fed milk and honey and the choicest cuts of meat. Move over Cleopatra! Tick-Tock the crocodile from Peter Pan (not the social media platform) must feel jealous they did not end up in an ancient Egyptian temple.

What do you think of our raku pottery vase, ‘Sobek’s Tears‘? Let me know in the comments below!

She Didn’t Win The Race, But Still Left The Competition In Flames

Madame Pele’s Flow‘, tells the tale of a sometimes beautiful goddess who was right at home in the flames of raku. Not only could she sometimes appear as a beautiful woman, but also a white dog, even an old woman, but also a lava flow.

I wonder what picture she used on her tinder profile, and how many of her suitors got burned!

Sale Price$124 – 10% = $112
Shipping Included in Canada and US
After reading this story, I don’t think any of her suitors will be asking her to go dutch!

Madame Pele, or Tutu Pele, has become well known for her power, passion, beauty and jealousy over the years. It makes you wonder why someone would challenge her to a race.

You just know someone is going to go down in this, the original flame war.

It was time again for the ever popular and fun houla races!

A houla is a wooden sled that is used to slide down steep stone slopes. A certain skilled houla rider, Papalauahi, was renowned for his skills. Bored by mediocre competition, he and the other chiefs decided to challenge Pele to a race.

Much to the delight of Papalauahi, he coasted easily to victory in the race, much to the cheers and applause of the other chiefs and spectators.

But this was not to be a ‘cool’ running.

Hell hath no fury like a god scorned!

Papalauahi might have been a mighty chief who won the race, but the victory party would become the hottest even on the island. Madame Pele in her rage would release a great flow of red hot lava that would overwhelm many of the spectators and chiefs, proving the age old advice of don’t play with fire – or a volcano goddess!

We can still see traces of the momentous race that occurred in lower Puna. Where stone trees/pillars of the those consumed by lava still stand today.

I guess they won’t be winning races anytime soon . . . or at all.

What did you think of our vase and story?

See you there!
