God has their Eye on you . . .

This vase story will double your pleasure! It is for two vases, collectively known as ‘Original Twin’, and tells the tale of a genderless god, child yielding spit and vomit, the creation of the world, a wandering eye and comes to us from ancient Egypt.

Original Twin – on display at Oxford Riverside Gallery – The Myth of Family Show

In the beginning there was the chaotic waters of Nu (also called Nun). From these swirling chaotic waters Atum willed themselves into existence. The genderless Atum also possessed an all knowing and seeing eye.

Being beyond gender simplified child birth for Atum. They were able to spit out their first child, a son, Shu, god of the air. He must have been a real mouthful.

The birth of their daughter, Telfnut, goddess of moisture, was a little messier. She vomited Telfnut up. Messy, but not quite as messy as child birth.

Original Twin – Telfnut

Original Twin – Shu

If you thought your parents had high expectations of you, you might empathize with Shu and Telfnut. Atum had charged them with creating order out of chaos.

Shu and Telfnut started with creating the earth (Geb) and the sky (Nut). Slowly over time the order of the world as we know it came to be, but in that process Shu and Telfnut were lost in the remaining darkness. Imagine losing your children in a never ending void!

Atum was desperate to find their offspring. They removed their all seeing eye and sent it out to search for Shu and Telfnut. When twins returned with the eye, the eye wept tears of joy and men sprung up where the tears hit the Earth.

Maybe that is why we are made of mostly water and a little salty! Do you know any twins or have any good twin stories? If so, share them in the comments below. What do you think of the vases and their story? You can see more images of the twins – here. And you can check out more raku vase stories here!

On The Wheel Wednesday – Substance

How we present ourselves to the world may be one thing.

But it is the space we hold for the substance of our selves that truly matters.

Long may she reign! HRH Queen Latifah and the Royal First Egg!

And so it was that Her Royal Henness Queen Latifah, Most Royal Hen of Household at Cluckingham Palace, came to lay our first egg.

There was quite the hubub at the palace! It was the talk of all the grassy townspeople! To have a new egg! Can you believe it?!

Princess Lay-a could not. She thought: There is guile to her excitement!

But how could there be! HRH Queen Latifah — our very beautiful hero who is always wonderful, forever blessed be her reign — would never lie.

Or would she?

Her Henness speaks!

The first egg has come today!
Let’s all adore ME and my reign
Queen Latifah’s come to slay
And bring that royal touch to your brain
!

Princess Lay-a was unphased by her Queen’s lyrical wit and respected history in the royal rap game.

Cluckingham Palace would be hers.

This is what happens when you smell

Ahh, the smell of a book freshly cracked open. The sound of the spine as it starts to get it’s legs. It’s an invitation to a new world you can get lost in.

What could be better than a new book?

How about a book and jewelry combo?

Well you are in luck, as until the end of the month of May 2020, you can get a copy of our bookA Potters Dream: Myths & Legends’ along with ANY piece of jewelry for $45 (includes shipping in the US/Canada)!

Wait, what is the book about anyway?

“A Potter’s Dream: Myths and Legends” collects stories across cultures and centuries, adapting them to our pottery with wit, love, compassion and joy. “A Potter’s Dream: Myths and Legends” is a decidedly modern take on the traditional topics of pottery, healing, community – and what it means to be human – all interwoven with the magic of raku and stunning pottery.

It makes for a great coffee table book, bedtime reading, bathroom book or gift for the art lover in your life. But don’t take my word for it, here are some that came in from a dear reader via Goodreads!

So if that piques your interest, all you need to do now is pick out a piece of jewelry from this link and you are good to go!

A few pieces of ceramic jewelry from The Alchemist’s Studio.

You can also use the button below to make a purchase using PayPal, and then we can contact YOU over email about which piece of jewelry you would prefer. This is only around for a short time, and remember that shipping in the US/Canada is included in your purchase!

If it is not in your budget go get in on the May sale at this time, we will also be drawing for two prizes that will include a copy of our book ‘A Potters Dream: Myths & Legends’ an art print and piece of jewelry for one of the lucky winners – once we reach 300 subscribers.

You Can Do Anything

It’s true! Whether you are young or old, or in the midlife stream all things are possible. Do what you love, and you can do anything.

I accidentally became a potter.

I had always been curious about working with clay. One day I decided to take a pottery lesson with a friend. Little did I know at the time a sensory love affair started that day.

My first pieces out of the kiln thrilled me. It was the magical transition of the glaze from the firing that got me. Though looking back at those pieces, I am not sure what gave me hope!

The first vase I ever threw is the smallest one in this group photo!

I really had no idea what I was doing. But something lit a fire in me, and it was not the flames of raku!

Have you thought about your dreams lately? Do you still have dreams? Last year (life before pandemic), one of my dreams was to have my first solo pottery exhibition, and thanks to the Oxford Riverside Gallery, and a lot of hard work, I was able to make that happen!

Short video of my Raku Pottery exhibit – ‘The Myth of Family’

Yes, COVID-19 has set some things back (and also some things forward), but regardless, I hope you will continue to join me on my journey as I refine my craft and continue to reach for more dreams.

Raku jewelry is a unique one of a kind gift. One of the raku pottery vases from ‘The Myth of Family Exhibit’Raku Owl and Red DoorA raku owl stands guard at a magical garden door.

Was it a coincidence that in my small rural part of the world I was able to find a pottery class to attend? To me, it was meant to be! And the best is yet to come!

What do you think of my story about how I became a potter?

I would love to hear your story about how you found or fell into your creative passion and/or about your creative dreams and aspirations!

On The Wheel Wednesday – Perspectives on Growth

Sometimes it may feel like the world is keeping you smaller than you are or that you may not have been growing very much at all.
