How to Find a Trauma Therapist in Tampa

trauma therapy

Shame thrives in silence, in the darkness where it tells you that you are unworthy of love and acceptance. Shame tells you that what you did or experienced is not only bad, but that you are bad as a person.

The solution to shame is empathy from a compassionate friend, family member, pastor or therapist to help minimize that shame.

Many trauma sufferers have shameful beliefs such as “it’s my fault they abused me” or “I will never be good enough”. These thoughts can run the narrative and lead us to not live life to the fullest and it can make us afraid of people, places and reminders of our past.

I want to congratulate you on taking the first step and being here to read this. You are acknowledging that you deserve to feel whole, worthy and safe.

Mental health counseling includes many different forms of therapy. Including typical talk therapy such as:

Cognitive-Behavioral TherapyAcceptance and Commitment TherapyDialectical Behavioral TherapyMindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP)

Additional therapies that involve the body more or trauma therapy include:

BrainspottingEMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing)IFS (internal family systems)Somatic TherapyTrauma Therapy

When someone experiences a traumatic event or post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms they can be reliving that traumatic event repeatedly. They may have many different triggers and may not have awareness of their triggers because they may not seem correlated to the original event.

Trauma is simply a disturbing event that overwhelms someone’s nervous system. It may not seem as traumatic to other people witnessing the event because people respond differently. After trauma, an individual may experience numbing, flashbacks, avoidance, nightmares, and irritability. Complex trauma can be even more complicated due to the build up of hurt and overwhelm done to a person’s nervous system.

Eye-Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy that I offer to help my clients get through their trauma fast. As someone who utilizes this form of trauma therapy to alleviate attachment wounds, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression. I find that EMDR helps my clients get through their trauma faster than if they did not do therapy or than conventional talk-therapies.

I offer in-person sessions in Tampa, Florida and telehealth throughout the state of Florida.

Brainspotting is a trauma therapy that uses eye movement to focus on a specific point where emotional distress may be stuck until it is alleviated. This form of therapy helps individuals locate a spot that can release symptoms and experiences that are not typically identified by the conscious mind.

Internal Family Systems is a tool used to explain the combination of parts that are wounded and protective parts led by the Self. This form of therapy is utilized to identify protective parts in order to heal the wounded parts.

Somatic Therapy helps individuals release from patterns of fight, flight and freeze that is stuck in parts of the body. The body holds on to traumatic memories and somatic experiencing allows individuals to identify where it is stuck in the body to release it through various exercises.

How to find a trauma therapist for you

Finding a therapist that specializes in one or more of the above therapies is important in helping an individual get long-term relief. Developing coping skills to deal with triggers can be helpful in alleviating some symptoms but I believe getting to the root cause is the best form of healing.

Next find someone whom you feel comfortable with and give them 3-5 sessions to get a fair assessment on whether they are a good fit or not. Discussing time frames on your progress can be beneficial if you have specific goals that you want to reach. This could look like reviewing a rough treatment plan together or discussing with your therapist if you are ready or what you feel like you need in order to begin processing trauma. There is no right or wrong amount of time. Every person has different experiences, unprocessed memories, living situations and other factors that impact the healing process.

Additional Resources

Trauma therapy is an incredible way to facilitate healing in a safe place. Additionally support groups can be a great place to feel like you are not alone in this journey. Self-help books, podcasts Youtube videos and more can help you between sessions or if you’re not ready for therapy. One of my favorite trauma books is The Body Keeps the Score, it explains how the body stores memories and sensations that our minds may have a hard time remembering.

Conclusion

If the above symptoms sound like something you have been struggling with for a day or 3,000 days and you want to begin your healing journey, then taking the next step to schedule a session is progress. If you are in Florida and you have interest in doing EMDR, I offer a 15 minute free consultation to discuss your goals. Even if you do not have significant trauma that you would like to bring in to session, you are welcome as well to vent, cry or just have someone to listen with an unbiased ear ready to support you.

How to break a Fever

A fever causes an elevation in temperature brought on by inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and bacterial and viral infections. Hyperpyrexia differs from a fever, which occurs when a person’s temperature is 105.8 degrees F and above. The average temperature is 98.7 degrees, and a low-grade fever is 99.1 F to 100.4 F; a moderate grade is 100.6 to 102.2 F, and a high grade is 102.4 to 105.8.

Fever temperature reads differently depending on the reading location. Rectal, tympanic, and urine readings are higher in temperature than oral and axillary readings. Individuals have different baseline temperatures, which can affect a fever.

A fever causes an increase in metabolic rate for every degree Celsius above average body temperature. Other effects of a fever include breaking down protein and fat for energy instead of glucose. Fevers serve to fight off infections.

What Causes a Fever?

A fever occurs from a part of the hypothalamus in the brain with fever-activated neurons. These substances can cross over the blood-brain barrier and access the brain, causing the body to create illness symptoms.

Some causes of a fever include sepsis (74% of fever hospitalizations). Drug reactions can induce fevers in a hospital setting.

Some noninfectious causes of fever include medications, autoimmune disorders postoperative stress and immune-mediated processes.

Physical Effects of a Severe Fever

Hyperthermia, which is around 105.8 degrees, causes neurologic damage and effects on cognitive function. The cardiovascular system can cause vasoconstriction and reduced blood flow to the digestive system. The liver function can decline under an extended period of a high fever; there can be permanent damage after the fever fades. Kidney injury can occur, and an increase in temperature of only 2 degrees Celsius decreases the glomerular filtration rate. Spontaneous bleeding and slower clotting times can occur from a high fever.

A fever is an inflammatory response beyond the injury or infection site.

Call the doctor when you or someone you know has a fever above 100 degrees.

How to Break a Fever

Common over-the-counter antipyretic medicines to break a fever include Ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen. Antipyretic medications reduce enzymes in the hypothalamus to reduce the proinflammatory mediators. Antipyretics are not for everyone and can cause discomfort and adverse effects.

How to Break a Fever Naturally

Apple Cider Vinegar’s antibacterial and antifungal benefits have been proven effective in a study against Candida albicans and E.coli. The study showed no additional growth when apple cider vinegar was applied to the trays during incubation. Vinegar contains vitamins and minerals, including potassium, vitamins A, B, and C, and antioxidants. Vinegar improves circulation, which can boost healing and faster recovery.

Feverfew inhibits leukotriene production, which is an inflammatory mediator. Additionally, feverfew inhibits cytokines that respond to infection and injury in the body.

Echinacea suppresses cytokine production as well as allergy and inflammatory pathways. Echinacea works as an immune modulator to reduce respiratory infections. It can alleviate symptoms of cold, cough, bronchitis, and upper respiratory infections. Research shows that echinacea reduces fever severity.

American Sweetgum is a leaf and seed that reduces oxidative stress and has antiviral properties.

Willow Bark is an effective pain reliever due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It is also an active ingredient in aspirin.

Marshmallow root inhibits the replication of the flu (influenza) and is effective against infections like MRSA.

Herbs with strong antioxidant properties effectively treat fever caused by infection. Antioxidants slow cellular damage caused by free radicals as a result of infection.

How to Break a Baby’s Fever

The Indonesian Pediatric Association (IDAI) recommends using warm compress of herbs and plenty to drink. Using a warm apple cider vinegar compress on a child for 15 minutes decreases their temperature by 1-2 degrees more effectively than just warm water alone. Additionally, apple cider vinegar can be soothing to the skin and balance out the pH. Using a warm causes vasodilatation, so there is high blood flow, and the circulatory system can work more effectively at fighting infection.

Due to the possible damage to a child’s body from the side effects of common medications, using a homeopathic fever reducer may be a safer alternative, combined with cooling the body externally.

Buy Apple Cider Vinegar

Dehydration is a common symptom in someone with a fever, especially children. Staying hydrated with electrolytes and water can help children and adults regulate their body temperatures effectively. In a study of dengue fever, proper hydration prevents some signs of dengue fever.

Hydration requires electrolytes and water to get water into the cells throughout the body. The study recommended five glasses of water.

Marshmallow root herb in body wash lower fevers in children in a shorter period than the control group. Also, there are no side effects compared to the children given acetaminophen. Marshmallow root loose herbs can be added to a bath or brewed as a tea to use as a wet compress.

Conclusion

Fevers can be drug-induced or as a result of infection. There are multiple ways to break a fever naturally from apple cider vinegar, electrolytes and marshmallow root. Focusing on reducing infection by using herbs can lower various symptoms throughout the body utilizing a holistic approach.

Unlock the Secret to How to Reduce Cortisol Levels Naturally

Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone influencing energy and our sleep and wake cycle. Melatonin causes people to fall asleep, and cortisol wakes them up in the morning. However, when circadian rhythms are off, high levels of caffeine are consumed, vitamins are depleted, abuse occurs, or even just an extensive amount of stress can cause elevated cortisol levels.

If you do not want to read the full article, here are some supplements that lower cortisol.

How to Test for High Cortisol Levels

Testing your cortisol levels allows you to see how much it is impacting you as well as to see what is working in your attempts to lower cortisol. There are saliva, hair and blood tests to assess the beginning of your journey of finding the regimen that helps you learn how to reduce cortisol.

Two Specimens On Gray BackgroundEffects of Stress

For over 50 years, the effects of stress on the brain and body have been investigated. Chronic stress can decrease the size of the brain. The damage from stress causes different changes in the brain, including its ability to cope with stress, memory, and thought. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis produces stress hormones when the body is in a fight-or-flight response.

A threat or a perceived threat causes catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine to increase the heart rate and constrict the blood vessels in the skin and gut. Catecholamines cause the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to produce cortisol.

Heart Disease

Blood pressure, heart rate, and other cardiovascular markers fluctuate daily based on the circadian rhythm. The integrity of the autonomic nervous system influences these cardiovascular functions when highly stressed blood pressure is elevated as well as the heart rate.

Long-term effects of stress showed a 90% increased risk of cardiovascular events. Individuals with higher cortisol levels increased their risk for hypertension over a six to seven-year timeline and heart attack over an 11-year follow-up.

Memory Impairment

Long-term memory comes from larger parts of the brain, and short-term memory is maintained from the frontal and parietal lobes. The hippocampus converts memories from short-term to long-term. Memory disorders can occur from stress due to high glucocorticosteroids shrinking the hippocampus.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) reduces the hippocampus, according to brain scans. Glucocorticosteroids can cause memory problems, which means elevated cortisol levels after prolonged stress reduce memory.

Cognition and Learning Decline

Cognitions are our perception and reception of stimuli, which include learning, attention, judgment, and decision-making. Memory and cognitions are formed in the hippocampus, amygdala, and temporal lobe. Stress causes high cortisol levels and interferes with cognition. Stress results in glucocorticosteroid release. Glucocorticosteroids diffuse through the blood-brain barrier, causing long-term effects on cognition.

Cognitions are altered by long-term stress, causing gene expressions to be altered. Stress affects cognitions based on the duration and intensity of it.

Mental Health Disorders

HPA axis hyperactivity leads to behavioral and mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. Discrimination based on body weight increased stress levels compared to those who felt they were not discriminated against.

Childhood trauma, being in lower socioeconomic status, and stress on babies during pregnancy showed higher amounts of cortisol.

Sleep Issues

Cortisol highly influences wakefulness and issues with insomnia. Every tissue in the circadian rhythm is affected by cortisol, which contributes to an imbalance in melatonin production and issues falling or staying asleep.

Unrecognizable person sleeping under blanket

Sleep has three stages: awake, rapid eye movement (REM), and nonrapid eye movement (NREM). NREM has four stages: one and two are lighter, and three and four are deeper, resulting in more restful sleep. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulates sleep by lowering sympathetic (fight-or-flight) function during stages one and three of (NREM) sleep.

REM sleep is predominately a state of parasympathetic activity, but there are times when the sympathetic nervous system elevates blood pressure and heart rate during sleep. REM sleep occurs more during the early morning hours. Typically, cardiac events occur in the morning because of the changes in heart rate and blood pressure. Cardiac death, atrioventricular block, and a minor heart attack occur 40% more between 6 a.m. and 12 p.m. Jet lag and graveyard shift work create an imbalance in syncing the peripheral body clock with the cardiovascular system.

Circadian-Rhythm

Cortisol regulates the circadian rhythm on a 24-hour cycle. This rhythm impacts the brain, autonomic nervous system, and cardiovascular system. Cortisol is low when someone falls asleep and is highest when they wake up. Light and dark cycles from the environment impact the function of the circadian rhythm.

The control system of the circadian rhythm is the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus in the hypothalamus. The gastrointestinal system, liver, adipose tissue, muscle, and cardiovascular tissues also regulate the clock of the circadian rhythm. The function of this clock causes the body to release hormones, regulate the sleep and wake cycle, and the immune system. This clock even communicated to the immune system what time of the day it was.

Cortisol is controlled by the HPA axis and is secreted by the adrenal glands into the blood through a circadian and ultradian rhythm. The suprachiasmatic nucleus and the adrenal gland clock produce more cortisol around 7 a.m.- 8 a.m. and the lowest around 2 a.m.- 4 a.m.

Belly FatHow to reduce cortisol causing Belly Fat

Abdominal fat is higher in individuals with high cortisol levels and an imbalance in blood sugar levels. Inflammation, metabolic disorders, excess estrogens from the environment, and other factors cause weight around the abdomen. Stress increases insulin, which causes the body to store excess abdominal fat.

When individuals are exposed to glucocorticoids at high levels, they can develop abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome. Cortisol is a glucocorticoid that causes redistribution of white adipose tissue (belly fat) in the abdomen. Learning how to reduce cortisol can help minimize appetite by minimizing the cravings for comfort foods that elevated cortisol levels cause.

When glucocorticoids are produced, they decrease the brain’s sensitivity to leptin (fullness hormone) and increase insulin resistance. These hormones increase a preference for foods higher in sugar and fat. Blood sugar imbalance also affects mood and can increase anxiety and depression.

Additional Physical Effects

When the HPA axis is overworked, it can lead to adrenal fatigue and other metabolic, inflammatory, and mental health disorders.

Muscle sorenessDecreased bone and muscle mass leading to osteoporosisVisceral fat increasesHair lossFatigueRashesSkin ConditionsHormonal ImbalanceHeart DiseaseDigestive Issues Adrenal Insufficiency

Elevated cortisol impairs immune function, which causes individuals to be vulnerable to more frequent illness. A research study showed that women who had higher levels of stress and, therefore, impaired immune function had an increased risk of developing cancer. Glucocorticoids influence the inflammatory and immune response.

Symptoms of High CortisolWeight Gain (especially in the face and abdomen) DiabetesHirsutism in WomenMuscle WeaknessHormonal ImbalanceIncreased IrritabilityHigh Blood PressureHow to Lower Cortisol Levels

Mindfulness is a concept that utilizes being present in the moment and observant of interactions, thoughts, feelings, cravings, and more. Mindfulness is like a mental vacation. Mindfulness exercises may help you feel calm if you overthink or get overwhelmed. Mindfulness meditations make it easier if you follow a guided meditation to help you focus on different elements and parts of your body while freeing your mind of stress.

Research shows that with mindfulness meditations over a 4-day mindfulness program, cortisol levels dropped 75.55 nmol/L.

Coping with stress makes it sound easier than it is occasionally. However, managing stress by boundary setting, taking breaks, exercising, laughing, and getting optimal sleep.

Relaxation techniques such as grounding, deep breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation relax the body and mind, lowering cortisol.

Exercise naturally increases serotonin levels, making them effective in boosting mood and decreasing anxiety and depression symptoms.

Supplements to Lower Cortisol

Rhodiola Rosea alleviates stress-related fatigue and decreases cortisol upon awakening in burnout patients. Other adaptogenic herbs help lower cortisol levels and increase energy depending on the body’s needs.

Ashwagandha lowered cortisol levels by 27.9% after 60 days of supplementing with 600mg of Ashwagandha daily. Another study with at least 250mg of Ashwagandha lowered cortisol levels over an eight-week study. The benefits of Ashwagandha are lengthy, including giving a natural boost of energy that is not stimulating.

Buy Ashwagandha

Inositol comes in two forms: Myo-inositol and d-chiro-inositol. A combination of both forms is beneficial for anxiety attacks, reducing cortisol and balancing hormones and blood sugar in individuals with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). Inositol is water soluble because it is a b-vitamin recommended to be taken in high amounts. Research studies recommend 18 g of inositol daily to eliminate panic attacks and lower blood sugar and cortisol. This study compared inositol to an SSRI fluvoxamine, and the participants who took inositol had fewer side effects and better results.

Buy Myo-Inositol NowFoods to Reduce Cortisol

Protein-rich foods help to create blood sugar balance, which helps stabilize mood. Cortisol causes high blood sugar, and sugary foods increase cortisol production, making it a vicious cycle.

Green tea is lower in caffeine than coffee but contains L-theanine, which reduces stress and lowers cortisol.

Conclusion

Stress management techniques include regulating your nervous system through relaxation techniques and eating balanced protein, fat, and fiber, which can lower cortisol. Many supplements lower cortisol and complement the use of exercise and boundary setting. Learning how to lower cortisol is an ongoing process, but it has many benefits.

The VERY Best Supplements For a Child’s Anxiety

Yoga and Breathing Exercises

When kids suffer from anxiety, they experience specific body changes. And one of such changes is shortness of breath.

To help a child breathe more accessible and reduce their stress when they are feeling anxious, it is important to teach them how to breathe slowly and deeply.

However, with regular yoga and breathing exercises, you can teach your kids how to belly breath. Belly breathing is a yoga technique that helps to fill the lungs’ diaphragm with fresh air.

When anxious kids perform the belly breathing technique, they feel incredibly relaxed and calm. It normalizes the heart rate, blood pressure and calms every nerve in the body.

Other breathing exercises you can use to treat children with anxiety are;

Take a deep breath and lengthen your exhaling Perform focus and slow, deep breathing Practice equal breathing with your kids. It involves inhaling for the same amount of time you are exhaling. Resonant breathing etc. #2. Art Therapy

Aside from using supplements for child’s anxiety, you can also use art therapy. It’s a psychotherapy that involves the use of art for self-expression. The art could be drawing, painting, modeling, or any other activity to help your kids make their own relaxation.

If your kids can’t verbally express their feelings, they can use art to express themselves. If your child is undergoing art therapy, their therapists often help them interpret their paintings or drawings.

Art therapy is effective for treating children suffering from any of the following conditions;

Mental Health issues: Art therapy would be helpful if your kid is suffering from mental health issues. That’s why some scientific studies suggest that art therapy effectively treats people with schizophrenia and other related conditions. Children with dementia Children with autistic spectrum. Kids that can’t express their feelings.

There are different types of art therapy: painting, collaging, photography, textiles, and digital art.

Several studies suggested a relationship between magnesium deficiency and anxiety in children. Some of these studies further postulated that there’s improvement in kids with anxiety after taking magnesium supplements.

Again, some studies revealed that children’s constant fear and panic would reduce drastically with enough magnesium intake.

Consume Magnesium-rich foods like

RiceWheatOatsAvocadoDark ChocolateLegumes and nuts

However, these foods lose most of their magnesium content during processing. That’s why it’s better to use magnesium supplements for a child’s anxiety.

Additionally, you can give your child seeds like pumpkin, sunflower, flax, and sesame.

Other foods high in magnesium are; avocado, dark chocolate, legumes, and nuts.

If you are using magnesium supplements as an anxiety treatment for your child, you should consult a healthcare practitioner for the correct dose.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids are one of the most effective supplements for a child’s anxiety. Studies show that this supplement has excellent mental health benefits, including treating anxiety and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Several studies revealed that people who regularly take omega-three fatty acids are less prone to anxiety. Furthermore, kids suffering from the condition can experience improvement when they regularly use this supplement.

Generally, there are three types of Omega 3 fatty acids – ALA, EPA, and DHA. While the three are all effective, the EPA is more effective for treating anxiety and depression in children and adults.

The Vitamin B complex is a group of nutrients that play an essential role in the body. Since these vitamins are found in a wide variety of food, you can quickly get the recommended amount of this vitamin.

However, certain factors could increase your body’s demand for vitamin B complex. And some of these factors are age, pregnancy, medical conditions, medication, dietary choices, alcohol use, etc.

Studies show that when the body lacks this vitamin, it could lead to several conditions, including anxiety.

But most studies that linked vitamin B deficiencies with anxiety didn’t focus on children. However, it’s relatively safe to include vitamin B in your child’s diet or supplement them to help treat anxiety symptoms.

Vitamin B Rich Foods

The following foods are rich in vitamin B complex and can help manage a child’s anxiety.

• Pork, berries, legumes, lean meats. Nuts, soy milk ( Vitamin B1)

• Eggs, dark green vegetables, fish, grains, lean meat, mushrooms ( B2)

• Sunflower seeds, tuna, poultry, potato, cottage cheese, liver (B3)

• Organ meats, avocados, broccoli, mushrooms ( B5)

• Green beans, whole grains, spinach, fish, bananas ( B6)

• Soy products, egg yolks, fish, organ meats, cheese, sweet potatoes ( B7)

• Green leafy vegetables, citrus juice, legumes, tofu, tomato juice ( B9)

• Milk, fish, fortified breakfast cereal, eggs, shellfish ( B12)

#4. Passion Flower

Passion Flower is one of the most popular supplements for a child’s anxiety. It’s effective for managing insomnia, anxiety, and conditions relating to Gastrointestinal setup.

The supplement seems safe for treating anxiety, but a few reported side effects exist. And no study currently supports the use of passionflower supplements for a child’s anxiety.

However, there has been little anecdotal evidence of passion flowers being effective for a child’s anxiety. And Dr. Weil, an integrative medical doctor and co-founder of the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, recommends using the tincture form of passionflower (using a non-alcohol tincture for children under four and using half the recommended adult dosage for children under 10.

Furthermore, some researchers revealed that passionflower could help to treat anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pains. That’s because the supplement helps to increase your Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) level.

GABA is a brain chemical that helps to regulate mood. And if your child has a healthy level of GABA in their brain, they will be more relaxed and calm.

However, some of the side effects of passionflowers on your kids include; drowsiness, dizziness, and confusion. So, it’s advisable not to administer this supplement to your child during school days.

#5. Lavender, Lemon Balm, and Chamomile

According to studies, these three supplements effectively treat mild and moderate anxiety in children. They are amongst the most effective supplements for a child’s anxiety.

Experts opined that these herbs have calming properties that help calm and relax children with anxiety. Experts suggest that Cyracos (a lemon balm product) has anti-anxiety effects in adults.

Similarly, lavender, lemon balm, and chamomile are more suitable supplements for a child’s anxiety. You can add sweeteners like stevia or honey to the supplement for children over one year.

Again, you can use diluted essential oils on your child’s pillow at night for a calming effect.

#6. Valerian Root

Since the days of ancient Greece, valerian root has always been used as a medicinal supplement. It’s one of the best natural supplements for a child’s anxiety.

Valerian root contains valeric acid. When administered to your child orally, the valeric acid will convert to calming, “feel good” neurotransmitters. This helps to regulate stress and helps your kids to relax their bodies and minds.

Interestingly, the valerian root is available in capsule, tea, and liquid forms. It’s advisable to talk to your doctor for dosage advice.

#7. Licorice Root

Licorice root is a fantastic treatment option for a child’s anxiety. The root tastes good and is excellent for people with anxiety because it works on the adrenal glands when consumed.

The adrenal gland is responsible for producing stress, adrenaline, and cortisol. And when you consume licorice regulates the production of these hormones, strengthens the body’s defense against stress, and fights anxiety symptoms.

Natural Calming Supplements for Toddlers

Vitamins and minerals benefit everyone, but younger children have difficulty breaking down certain herbs. A natural alternative for younger children is homeopathic supplements.

Homeopathy combines low doses and consuming a very small dose of a homeopathic salt that causes similar symptoms to a condition that a person may have.

This homeopathic supplement is safe for newborns to 12-year-olds to help calm them, minimize nightmares, and relieve irritability.

What to Do If Your Child Has Anxiety

Before administering supplements for a child’s anxiety, you must know what to do when your child is anxious. And that’s what we will cover in this section.

Seeing your child suffering from anxiety and being unable to help is heartbreaking. It gives you a negative feeling that words can’t explain. Unfortunately, their fear of not allowing their kids to suffer from anxiety sometimes worsens it.

1. Take Things Slowly But Steadily

One mistake parents often make is trying to make their kids overcome anxiety by all means. It doesn’t work that way. If you continue to pressurize your child, the fears and panic will only exacerbate.

Helping your child feel more confident can help them reduce anxiety and allow them to believe in themselves. Having them do small chores or tasks and accomplish things can boost dopamine.

So, always remind yourself that the goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety. But to help your child manage it. With this mindset, you can use the right approach to help your child.

The first thing you should do is to identify the stressor that triggers your child’s anxiety. Once you identify the stressor, teach your child how to tolerate their anxiety and manage the stressors that trigger it.

2. Confront Things That Make your child Anxious

Sometimes, parents help their children avoid the things that scare them or make them panic. While this approach may work in the short term, it would reinforce the anxiety in the long run.

Regardless of how scared your child seems, never allow them to avoid things that make them fear and panic. Teach them how to confront their fears; within a short time, they will overcome their anxiety.

3. Express Positive but Realistic Expectations.

Learn to improve your child’s self-confidence. And don’t try to tell your child lies just to make them feel good. Because when they stop trusting you, that would be worse.

For instance, if your child fears failing his/her examination, not having fun ice skating, etc. You don’t have to give them false hope that their fears aren’t real. Instead, let them know that you have confidence in them and that they can overcome whatever fear they will face.

These words of affirmation will give your kids the validation they need to overcome their fears.

4. Respect Their Feelings, But Don’t Empower them.

One of the best ways to help your child manage anxiety is to respect their feelings. But you must not empower them to be stubborn.

For instance, if your child doesn’t want to go to school because they are performing poorly in Mathematics, don’t belittle their fears and don’t empower them.

Listen to them, hear their concerns, and encourage them to learn to face their fears.

5. Don’t Ask Leading Questions

If any of your kids suffer from anxiety, avoid asking them leading questions, it would only worsen things. They would feel pressure and don’t want to open up to you.

However, you can ask them close-ended questions like – how are you feeling about tomorrow’s math test? I hope you have read your book for the test. Are you going to school with your friends, etc.?

6. Teach What Emotions Feel Like

Teach your child what each emotion feels like and how they can best communicate them. You can use an emotions wheel to show them the different categories of emotions and ways to describe them.

Identifying an emotion can make it easier to understand why they feel that way.

7. Take Them to Therapy

You may not believe it, but there is therapy for children, and it’s often done in play therapy. This form of therapy allows a child to feel comfortable and to be able to communicate with the representation of what they are talking about. It also takes the edge off when they are nervous about talking to a stranger about something that has happened to them.

In Conclusion

You can assist your child in coping with their anxiety via supplementation, stress-reducing exercises, and helping them understand what anxiety is. Teaching relaxation techniques such as breathing techniques and healthy ways to deal with their anxiety will help them increase their emotional intelligence and make them great spouses, coworkers, parents, and friends.

How To Pick the Best Gifts for 9-Year-Old Girls

Kids grow up so fast, and their interests change just as rapidly. Knowing how to pick the best gifts for 9-year-old girls requires a keen sense of balance between the playful girl she is and the near teen she’s becoming.

Having once been a nine-year-old girl, I can vaguely remember all the excitement of approaching double digits. It feels like reaching such a mature milestone, yet you still love to play and be carefree. When you’re nine, the world is still a curious place full of wonder, but you’re quickly forming stronger opinions about the things you do and do not like.

Often, one fundamental dislike many young people share is the feeling that they are treated like little kids. Nine-year-olds are at a uniquely impressionable age. But the great thing about this age is the opportunity parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles have to be mentors and show respect for the budding perspective and opinions the nine-year-old girl in their life is forming.

Giving gifts is always a great time to strengthen your bond with friends and family. But when picking gifts for nine-year-old girls, consider gifting something that could help them discover meaningful new interests or have a lasting impact they will remember for years.

No matter what time of year, these tips will help make picking the best gifts for 9-year-old girls as fun as spending time with them.

Affordable Gifts for 9-Year-Old Girls

What is “affordable” these days? That depends on your personal budget. We tried to cap our recommendations at $25. Though money is an inescapable factor in almost everything we do, there are plenty of low-cost or free gifts for 9-year-old girls. Below are a few affordable toys they will genuinely cherish long after the shiny newness of their other gifts has worn off.

Stuffed Animal gifts for a 9 year old

Opt for a plush toy modeled after a favorite character, or consider making an impact by buying a stuffed animal from a maker that supports a nonprofit like Rainforest Conservation or the World Wildlife Fund.

Card Games

Card games have become very diversified. There are the traditional games you play with a standard deck of 52 or a unique dedicated deck card game like Exploding Kittens. Whichever type you choose, it’s sure to provide hours of fun.

Board Games

Like Trekking the national parks, a strategy game the whole family will enjoy. Who knows! It might inspire a family trip to one or several of our nation’s incredible parks.

A Fun Mermaid Blanket

You could get her any old cozy blanket, but a mermaid blanket is unique. How many people do you know that have a cool blanket like that?

Remote Control Lights For Her Room

Regardless of her current style aesthetic, most LED light strips have many different color settings and themes, so she can style her room just as she likes. As a bonus, LEDs are easy to install, last forever, and have minimal impact on mom and dad’s utilities. They’re a win all around.

A Favorite Homemade Treat

Don’t underestimate the joy and satisfaction your nine-year-old will feel receiving their favorite homemade treat on their birthday or other special occasion.

Useful Gifts for 9-Year-Old Girls

It may seem silly to say, but young girls have things they need, too! Even if she gets confused by the concept and thinks she absolutely needs a brand new iPhone 15 or her life will be ruined.

Other times, the 9-year-old in your life might surprise you by asking for an item that would fall into the need category, like replacements for the athletic gear she outgrew or, instead, replacements for just about everything she’s growing out of all the time.

Or sometimes, a need could be supplies to further her practice or study of a subject like art, music, or science. The best thing is that there is always a need for knowledge, so encouraging her interests will always be a great gift.

Tutoring

This won’t be the most exciting gift she receives, but it could have a lasting impact on her confidence and ability to do well in school. No one likes to struggle or be ridiculed. Helping them overcome their academic difficulties will do wonders for them inside and outside the classroom.

Fun Craft Sets

Craft sets like a crochet set or a latch hook kit that she can turn into a pillow or a fun piece of wall art will help develop her fine motor skills.

Art Supplies

There are many options for creative play and self-expression, from paints to beads, fashion design, and more. The trick will be leaving the craft store on or under budget.

STEM Toys

STEM toys make a perfect gift and fun toy for nine-year-old girls who love learning how things work. So many fun kits will captivate and demystify advanced concepts around things like electricity, coding, physics, and so much more.

Gifts for the Fashion Forward Tween Girls on Your List

If your 9-year-old loves keeping up with the latest trends in fashion design and beauty, these gift ideas are for you! Taking pride in one’s appearance and using a wardrobe as a form of self-expression is a great thing to do at any age.

However, ensuring our fashion and beauty gifts send the right message to the young girls in our lives is so important. There is a lot of confusing information out there for girls of this age group and older. We should always be mindful of how we can help them feel more confident and secure in their own skin. The good news is there is a way to use gifts for nine-year-old girls as a way of teaching them about healthy self-care routines and what it means to practice self-love.

Lip Gloss

Depending on your feelings towards tweens wearing make-up, lip gloss is a great way to compromise. Lip glosses come in various formulations, from full color to tinted or clear. Choosing a soft tint or clear lip gloss is a great way to let her have fun without looking too grown up already.

Hair Chalk

At some point or another, I think all young girls are intrigued by the idea of having colored hair. Like clear lip gloss, hair chalk is a great way to let them have fun and try out an exotic color without the long-term effects or potential damage from true hair dye.

Friendship Bracelets

Buy them pre-done or as a fun activity kit, she can enjoy with her friends. With recent trends in the pop music industry, friendship bracelets are making a solid comeback. So friendship bracelets are likely included on her wish list items.

?Bath Bombs

They’re colorful, they fizz, and sometimes they even sparkle! Bath bombs make great gifts for 9-year-olds or any bath lover, for that matter. Experiment with different scents and ingredients for various benefits and occasions.

Bonus Tip: Teach her the value and importance of knowing what she’s putting on and in her body. You don’t have to be a dermatologist or skin expert to use a third-party ingredient checker to validate the claims and safety of a beauty or skincare product.

Gifts for 9-Year-Old Girls That Make Memories

The more excited you are to share something with her, the more excited she will be to listen and participate in your planned activities. You can plan your activity with educational value or share a favorite pastime or tradition from your childhood.

Museum Trip

Sharing the history and wonder of the world with kids is a rare treat. Planning an unforgettable art museum day is a great way to do just that. Consider sparking their interest beforehand by taking museum virtual tours and mapping out which exhibits they are most excited to see. You can also plan a scavenger hunt or use one the museum has already created.

Remember to check museum policies beforehand, but consider bringing snacks and a notepad to write down interesting facts, questions, or doodling. Round out your adventure with a sweet treat from your favorite cafe, and share the day’s highlights.

A Shopping Trip

Set a budget and let her pick. Speaking of forming opinions and wanting to make things her own, nine years old is a great age to spruce up her bedroom with a little personalized interior design flare. This could be a fun activity for you to do together.

Monthly Subscription Box

With myriad options available, from science experiments and craft projects to literature adventures or even fashion and beauty explorations, these subscription boxes go beyond mere material gifts. They’re a gift that keeps on giving. Subscription boxes offer something to look forward to each month and remind them of you and your thoughtful gift.

A Trip to the Movie Theater

With the convenience of streaming services, going to the movies is becoming a more novel form of entertainment. If you want to splurge, opt for a 3D or Imax experience. Grab your favorite treats and popcorn, and it’s likely to be a fun time for you both. Like visiting a museum, going to the movies and planning a small activity afterward is a great way to spend time together and discuss your thoughts on the film you shared.

Collectible & Themed Gifts for 9-Year-Old Girls

Are there any super fans in the house? Though we haven’t seen toy rage quite like the Cabbage Patch Doll days of the 80s and 90s, plenty of coveted and collectible toys still make great gifts for 9-year-old girls. Ask her about any favorite new streaming series or music artists, and you’ll come up with dozens of great gift ideas she will love. Here are a few popular tried and true ideas to get you started:

American Girl Dolls and accessoriesStar WarsHarry PotterLego Themed AnythingBreyer Horses

Bonus Tip: If you have a collector in the family, instead of adding to their collection, consider ways you can help protect or enhance their enjoyment of their collection with specialized display racks or protective cases for their favorite things.

Video Games & Consoles

The video game world has come a long way from arcades and atari machines. Now, you can buy dozens of gifts, from gaming credits to consoles, headsets, games, and more. The biggest challenge when shopping for gaming gifts is compatibility. Since there is such a diverse range of options out there, make sure you know what generation and model version she has, and make sure you get a gift receipt just in case.

Handheld Console like a Nintendo SwitchMario Kart GameElectronic Store Gift CardGaming Platform Gift Cards Like Xbox Live or RobloxLast Minute Gifts

Sometimes, the chaos of life gets the better of us, usually at the worst possible times, like moments before you’re about to see your nine-year-old niece and realize you forgot to get her a gift. Take a deep breath. You’ve got this. On your way to see her, when you have to stop for gas because you’ve already been on empty for three days, you can swing into the convenience store or the grocery next door and grab any of the following gift items. Also, remember to grab a card. Once again, you’ve saved the day, and no one is the wiser!

Fresh Cut Flowers

If you’re shopping for a nine-year-old girl who’s a bit of a sentimentalist, she will love this unexpected and very grown-up gift. Everyone can appreciate beautiful flowers, but it’s not every day you receive your own beautiful bouquet.

Gift Cards

Every convenience or grocery store usually has a huge kiosk near the checkout with dozens of options. If you’re stressed and unsure what she would like best, opt for one of the combo cards that work at multiple retailers.

This is a great way to teach money management and responsible shopping by allowing her to choose for herself. A favorite tradition in our family is sharing what you bought when you use your gift card. Part of what makes this tradition fun is that months often go by before the recipient uses the card. Seeing what they bought and a great chance to reconnect is a fun surprise.

A Good Book

Encouraging young readers to get lost in a good book is more than just a great gift. It helps instill good habits and strengthen their reading skills. If the 9-year-old girls on your list struggle to get into reading, try giving them a graphic novel. The beautiful illustrations are sometimes all that’s needed to capture their attention.

12 Legit Tips On How To Be More Attractive: You Won’t Believe How Easy They Are!

Do you know that feeling when you’ve got your favorite outfit on, and your hair is sitting just right, but for some reason, you just don’t feel as attractive as you want to? You can’t help but notice how your friends or even that random woman on the street seems to totally slay and exude that irresistible aura all the time!

But what’s missing in your own fab equation, you wonder? Where’s the gap, and how do you bridge it?

Guess what? Your looks are just a small part of the big picture we call charisma. There’s a whole world of vibes and energy that make people irresistibly attractive, and the good news is – you can learn to master that, too!

If you’re eager to step up your “wow” factor, stick with me, and let’s uncover the secret sauce of attraction!

The Fab Four for Looking More Attractive

To truly become a magnet of allure, you need to focus on the following four fabulous factors:

Self-confidence and self-carePersonal style and groomingBody language and posturePositive mindset

First impressions matter, and they’re influenced by much more than your appearance. Exude self-confidence, and you’ll have people drawn to you like moths to a flame. Start by taking care of yourself – mentally and physically. Treat yourself to a spa day, indulge in that guilty-pleasure Netflix series, and prioritize your overall well-being!

Next up, personal style and grooming. Tell the world about your unique self by dressing in clothes that make you feel amazing. Grooming is key, too – it doesn’t hurt to look sharp and put together. ?

Body language is oh-so-important! Be aware of how you carry yourself. Stand up straight, maintain eye contact, and smile. These subtle cues convey that you’re confident, approachable, and engaging.

Last but not least, adopt a positive mindset. A sunny disposition can work wonders – when you’re beaming with optimism, everyone will want a piece of the warmth you’re emanating!

Now, Let’s Put These Into Action To Become More Attractive1. Hygiene Matters!

Alright, let’s talk hygiene. You know the drill: keep it clean and pristine. While it may seem basic, hygiene really does play a critical role in how attractive you appear to others. And remember, a little effort goes a long way. Let’s break it down:

1. Build a Simple, Nice Skincare Routine

It’s a common belief that you’re good to go if you can make up the outer appearance. But what if your skin is so uneven and filled with acne and pigmentations? Does it look attractive? Not really!

All it takes is a simple yet effective skincare routine tailored to your skin’s unique needs. Start by understanding your skin type (oily, dry, combination, or sensitive) and select suitable products.

Make cleansing, moisturizing, and wearing sunscreen a daily ritual. Remember to apply sunscreen whenever you step out.

Bonus tip: don’t forget to gently exfoliate at least once a week to keep those dead skin cells at bay.

2. Haircare Is Just as ImportantBlonde-haired Woman Standing Between Green Plants

A clean, cute face and Einstein-like hair are definitely not attractive, right? Hair is your head’s crowning glory, so treat it like the precious asset it is! So, why not make some easy-to-do efforts to keep your mane healthy and shiny, too?

Find a flattering haircut that complements your face shape and maintain it with regular trims. Invest in high-quality hair products (the kind that leaves your locks soft, smooth, and manageable) and use them as directed. Don’t underestimate the power of a scalp massage! Show your tresses some extra love by massaging your scalp with oil for a relaxing pre-wash treatment.

Pro tip: A satin pillowcase will keep your hair looking fab even when catching some Z’s.

3. Make Sure You Smell Like a Diva

If you haven’t invested in a signature scent, it’s about time! Find a fragrance that screams, “This is so me,” and people will always remember you as the one who smelled terrific.

Opt for pleasant but not overpowering fragrances, and don’t be afraid to experiment.

Not only will it work wonders for your confidence (which, BTW, is ultra-attractive), but it will also have people subconsciously associating you with good vibes. And you know what, you don’t even have to splurge to smell angelic. Sometimes, you can do with cheaper perfume dupes from Zara to smell exactly the same. Now, that’s my bonus tip for you all!

4. Keep Your Smile White and Tight!

Okay, this is a no-brainer: a stunning, genuine smile can melt hearts and turn heads. Luckily, you don’t need a Hollywood budget to achieve pearly whites. Invest in an electric toothbrush and some whitening toothpaste; don’t forget to floss daily. A bright smile will light up your face and attract all the right attention.

2. Dressing the Right Way1. Understanding Personal Style

It all starts with knowing you. Whether you’re a minimalist, a boho-chic lover, or a streetwear enthusiast, there’s no single “correct” way to express your style. Anything and everything that screams “This is me, world!” is your personal style.

To discover your inner fashionista, start by taking a look at your wardrobe. Notice any patterns or themes? Grab a style icon or two and create a Pinterest board or fashion mood board to help identify which trends and elements resonate with you.

Remember, personal style is all about being true to yourself – wear what makes you happy and comfortable, and you’ll automatically become more attractive.

Plus, this is a great excuse to treat yourself to a shopping spree. Need we say more?

2. Dressing for Your Body Type

Do you ever wonder why some outfits don’t seem to do you justice while others make you feel like a million bucks? It’s all about dressing for your body type! Knowing your body’s unique shape will help you find clothing that hugs all the right places and highlights your fabulous features.

Not sure what your body type is? Let me give you a quick lowdown on dressing for your body type:

Rectangle shape – Equal bust-to-hip ratio with not-so-defined waistPear shape – Narrower bust and wider hips with a well-defined waistApple shape – Bigger top half with a rounded waistlineHourglass shape – Equal bust-to-hip ratio with a clearly thinner and defined waistInverted triangle shape – Broader shoulders and bust as compared to hips3. Find Colors That Suit Your Skin Undertone & Season

Did you know there’s a science to looking amazing in color? Certain colors can add vibrancy to your complexion, while others may dull it down. But how do you know which ones are for you? Two things – skin undertone (and not complexion) and seasonal analysis.

To determine your undertone, take a look at the veins on your wrist – are they blue (cool undertone), green (warm undertone), or a mix of both (neutral undertone)?

Your season – out of spring, summer, fall, and winter – can be determined through the combination of your skin tone, eye color, and natural hair color, and it helps identify the most flattering shades for you.

4. Accessorize to Enhance Your Favorite Features

Accessories can elevate any outfit from “meh” to “MAGNIFICENT” – and let’s face it, who doesn’t want to feel like a star?

Play up your eyes with statement earrings, draw attention to your beautiful neckline with a delicate necklace or a dainty anklet that highlights your legs, or add some pizzazz to your waistline with a stylish belt. There’s everything for everyone!

3. Own & Be Confident in Who You Are

Confidence is like a magnet that pulls people towards you! The easiest and most enjoyable way to feel fantastic is to discover your passions and talents, believe in yourself, and embrace your unique qualities. Be unapologetically you, and watch how brightly you shine!

4. Enhance Your Posture and Body Language

Stand tall and proud! Good posture not only makes you look prettier and more attractive but also boosts your energy and mood. Learn to walk with your chin up and shoulders back.

Remember, your body language speaks louder than words, so make it a fun mission to master the art of poise and grace!

5. Ooze Positivity

Everyone loves to be around people who emanate positive vibes! Challenge yourself to find the silver lining in every situation and spread positivity like confetti. Just let that zest for life shine through, and you’ll become a beacon of attraction in no time!

6. Master the Art of Conversation

Get ready to charm the socks off people with your conversational prowess! Keep up with current events, listen actively to others, and throw in a dash of wit and humor to win hearts and minds. Practice makes perfect, so turn every chat into an opportunity to hone your skills.

7. Laugh Out a Little

Laughter truly is the best medicine, and it’s contagious! Add a sprinkle of joy and amusement to your life by laughing more often.

Adopt a laid-back attitude, enjoy funny movies, or just crack yourself up with hilarious thoughts. Genuine laughter can brighten any mood and make you oh-so-irresistible!

8. The Role of Health and Wellness

It’s no secret that caring for your mind and body makes you feel good. But did you know that focusing on your health and wellness is like waving a magic wand over your attractiveness?

That’s right, there’s a strong connection between how you feel and how you look! So, amp up your wellness game and let your inner glow shine through to be more attractive.

1. Eating Well and Staying Hydrated

When it comes to attractiveness, good nutrition is your secret weapon! The fuel you put into your body is literally the building blocks for your hair, skin, nails, and everything in between.

So, serve up a plate of colorful fruits and veggies, lean protein, whole grains, and healthy fats. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water, which is the elixir of life and an absolute game-changer for radiant skin!

2. Regular Exercise for a Healthy Body and Mind

All I want to say is – sweat it out, baby! Getting your daily dose of heart-pumping, mood-boosting, and eye-catching exercise is essential for staying fit and fabulous.

Whether it’s dancing the night away, lifting weights like a boss, or embracing your inner yogi – find an activity you love and watch your confidence and attractiveness soar! Plus, who can resist those post-workout endorphins?

3. Catch Some Rest and Sleep

Now that we’re at it, let’s also talk about the power of R&R – rest and relaxation! In a world glorifying “hustle culture,” we sometimes forget the importance of slowing down and charging our batteries.

Getting enough sleep and taking time out for self-care is essential for maintaining that fresh-faced, well-rested, attractive look we all crave! So, say “yes” to those cozy evenings in, and wake up feeling rejuvenated, glowing, and ready to take on the world.

9. Build Emotional Intelligence and Empathy

Being attractive is about more than just your appearance – it’s also about how you understand and relate to others. Flex those emotional muscles by building your emotional intelligence (EQ).

By learning to read emotions and understanding people’s feelings, you’ll become a magnet for meaningful connections. So listen to your intuition and be empathic – it’s the secret sauce for getting people to adore you!

10. Be Kind and Listen Actively

Who doesn’t love a good listener? The key is to actively listen to whatever the other person is saying, which means giving the other person your full attention, asking questions, and responding thoughtfully.

And don’t forget to sprinkle in a dash of kindness – because genuine kindness can melt hearts and open them up to you. So, serve kindness like confetti whenever you engage with others!

11. Keep It Real & Authentic

Guess what? Being real and authentic can be super attractive in a world of filters and fake realities! So, drop the facades, be true to yourself, and embrace vulnerability.

People can smell authenticity from miles away and will be drawn to you for your honest and real approach to life. Trust me, with a pinch of authenticity, you’ll become a breath of fresh air that people won’t be able to resist!

12. Be Mysterious and Keep Some Secrets to Yourself

Want to have people hanging on to your every word? Then it’s time to embrace the power of mystery! By keeping some secrets to yourself and not sharing every detail of your life, you’ll leave people intrigued and wanting more.

Think of yourself as a tantalizing puzzle they can’t wait to solve, and watch how curiosity will keep them coming back for more. With mystery by your side, you’ll become the life of the party in no time! This article originally appeared on Wealth of Geeks.

What Is Jackfruit: What You Need To Know About This Tropical Superfood

Are you looking for a new, versatile ingredient to add to your meals? Look no further than jackfruit! This tropical fruit has gained popularity in the food world due to its unique taste and impressive nutritional benefits.

Whether you are a vegan, vegetarian, or simply looking for a healthier alternative, jackfruit is a versatile and delicious option that can be incorporated into various dishes.

Though it has long been common in South Asian and Caribbean cuisine, jackfruit is becoming more prevalent in the USA. That might not be too surprising, considering it’s a deliciously sweet fruit, but what might be unexpected is that it is showing up more and more as a tasty and healthy meat substitute. You may have spotted it on menus as a vegan alternative or in cans in your favorite store, but chances are you have yet to see the fruit itself or know how it looks or what it tastes like.

Origin and AppearanceClose-Up Photo of a Green Jackfruit on the Ground

Jackfruit is thought to have originated in India and Malaysia. However, it’s now grown across most tropical regions, with Southeast Asian and Caribbean countries producing some of the largest crops worldwide.

Its most noteworthy physical feature is its usual size. Jackfruit is the largest fruit in the world. When ripe, they are over ten inches long and, at their largest, can grow to forty inches.

Otherwise, jackfruits don’t look particularly unusual from the outside. They’re a plain-looking fruit with subtle green or yellow, bumpy skin, similar in shape to a mango.

However, jackfruit shows its character when the outer shell is broken into to get to the edible fruit inside. It is filled with plump, stringy yellow fleshy ‘pods’ with a unique appearance. This flesh looks like a cross between the inside of a pumpkin and citrus fruit segments. But things really get interesting when we explore how it tastes.

What Does Jackfruit Taste Like?

One of the most exciting features of jackfruit is that it can be eaten when young and green or ripe and yellow–both have a completely different flavor and texture.

Ripe jackfruit is much more traditionally “fruity,” with the yellow flesh having a sweet and subtle flavor comparable to many tropical fruits. The taste can be described as a combination of mango and banana, but is sometimes compared to sharper-tasting fruits such as apples or mild oranges, though it’s much more sweet than sour.

As delicious as it is fresh as a snack, there are lots of exciting ways to prepare the ripe fruit. A fantastic use for sweet, ripe jackfruit is to make a traditional Middle Easterner and South Asian dessert called Halwa. When mixed with spices, dried fruits, and nuts, it creates an intensely sweet, almost toffee-like flavor, much lower in fat and processed sugar than most Western deserts.

Young jackfruit has a much more unusual taste and texture. The unripened green fruit has flesh that has a very mild, almost neutral flavor, which lends itself well to soaking up the taste of sauces and seasonings in a similar way to tofu. Combined with a consistency like shredded meat, jackfruit has become popular as a meat alternative in savory dishes. It’s popularly served as a vegetarian version of barbeque pulled meat, often served on pizza, salads, or delicious spicy stews.

Nutritional Benefits of Jackfruit

Not only is jackfruit delicious, but it also boasts several fantastic nutritional benefits.

A 100-gram portion of jackfruit contains 95 calories, 2 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, and only 0.6 grams of fat. This makes it very low in fat and unusually high in protein for a fruit and a fantastic source of dietary fiber.

As well as being low in fat, it is also high in essential vitamins that your body may be craving, including vitamins C, B6, B3, B2, and folic acid (B9). It also contains many minerals beneficial to health, including significant amounts of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorous.

The high digestible and indigestible fiber levels in jackfruit help slow digestion, giving it a relatively low glycemic index. Including foods with a low glycemic index in your diet has been shown to help promote balanced blood sugar levels by encouraging a slow and steady increase in blood sugar rather than causing spikes.

May Help Lower Cholesterol

One of the many benefits of incorporating jackfruit into your diet is its positive impact on cholesterol levels. High cholesterol is a common health concern for many individuals, and finding natural ways to lower it can be challenging. Luckily, jackfruit is here to help.

Jackfruit contains zero cholesterol and is low in saturated fats, making it an ideal addition to a heart-healthy diet. The fiber content in jackfruit also plays a crucial role in managing cholesterol levels. Soluble fiber helps reduce cholesterol absorption in the bloodstream, preventing it from building up in the arteries and leading to heart disease.

In addition to its cholesterol-lowering properties, jackfruit also contains antioxidants that help to reduce inflammation and improve cardiovascular health. Its high potassium content supports healthy blood pressure levels, further protecting against heart disease.

By incorporating jackfruit into your meals, you can enjoy a delicious, cholesterol-friendly ingredient that not only enhances the taste of your dishes but also promotes heart health.

Benefits to the Immune System

Did you know that jackfruit can also give your immune system a boost? This tropical fruit is delicious and packed with nutrients that can help strengthen your body’s defenses against illness and disease.

Jackfruit, like many tropical fruits, is rich in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that plays a crucial role in supporting a healthy immune system. Vitamin C helps stimulate the production of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting off infections and viruses. Incorporating jackfruit into your diet can give your immune system the support it needs to keep you healthy.

In addition to vitamin C, jackfruit is a good source of other immune-boosting nutrients like vitamin A and zinc. These nutrients work together to enhance the functioning of your immune system, protecting you from common illnesses and promoting overall well-being.

So, next time you’re looking for a delicious and nutritious way to support your immune system, consider adding jackfruit to your meals. Your taste buds and immune system will thank you!

How To Choose and Store Jackfruit

Whichever variety of jackfruit you’re looking for, a vibrant color is always a good sign when picking your fruit. The best fruits are bright green or yellow-green. Fruits with brown or dull patches may be overripe, old, or of poor quality.

When feeling the fruit to gauge its freshness, you should look for a firm texture with some give. If the skin is not solid to the touch or has too much give when pressed, it’s likely too old and not of the best quality.

If you intend to eat the fruit ripe, leaving it at room temperature on the counter or in a large fruit bowl is best. Once fully ripened, they will be bright yellow, tender, and slightly yielding to the touch. Then the fruit must be broken open and the pods separated from the core, rind, and deseeded.

Instead of using the unripened pods in savory dishes, pick a green fruit that has yet to turn yellow, and don’t leave the fruit for too long before harvesting the pods as it may start to ripen. Storing jackfruit in the refrigerator can help keep it from ripening too quickly, and it can be safely stored for five to seven days.

Another characteristic that adds to jackfruit’s versatility is how well it takes to be stored long-term. Unripe jackfruit takes very well to being canned, with little notable flavor or texture change. Ripe jackfruit can also be dried. Dry jackfruit retains its tropical fruity taste and remains high in the vitamins and minerals that make it beneficial to health.

Jackfruit Seeds

When it comes to jackfruit, most people focus on the delicious and versatile flesh of the fruit and discard the seeds. But did you know that, like pumpkins, the seeds are also incredibly nutritious and offer fantastic health benefits? Not only that, but with some preparation, they make a delicious, savory snack. With a single fruit producing up to 500 seeds, throwing them in the trash would be a huge waste.

Jackfruit seeds are packed with vitamins that can support your overall well-being. They are high in iron, essential for growth and development, and help prevent anemia.

Jackfruit seeds are also a good source of protein, making them an excellent option for vegetarians and vegans. They’re also rich in antioxidants, which help protect your cells from damage and boost your immune system. Additionally, jackfruit seeds are high in fiber, which aids in digestion and can help prevent constipation.

Not only are jackfruit seeds nutritious, but they are also incredibly versatile. They can be boiled, roasted, or even sauteed with spices and seasoning and have a texture like salad potatoes and a mild, nutty flavor reminiscent of chestnuts. In some cultures, they are added to stews, curries, and rice to add texture and taste.

So, pay attention to the fantastic health benefits of jackfruit seeds. Incorporate them into your meals and enjoy the added nutrition and flavor they bring.

Sustainability

Jackfruit has occasionally been described as a “miracle crop,” partly due to its high nutritional content, culinary flexibility, and incredible natural sustainability.

It’s a very high-yield crop, with a single tree able to bear over two hundred substantial fruits and requiring a comparatively low amount of water to produce. As such, growing jackfruits encourages planting trees, which can help improve air quality and discourage deforestation.

It’s also remarkably hardy, able to withstand many common crop diseases and pests, thrives in high temperatures, and is highly resistant to drought. As such, it could be a reliable alternative to other crops in farming regions threatened by climate change.

How Jackfruit Can Transform Your Cuisine

Jackfruit is a remarkable fruit. It’s delicious, sustainable, eco-friendly, high in vitamins, and boasts an array of health benefits.

It can be eaten sweet or savory and be included in a wide variety of recipes, from sweet snacks and healthy desserts to spicy curries and barbeque dishes. As such, it’s straightforward to incorporate your tastes and dietary requirements into your diet.

Incorporating jackfruit into your diet adds a burst of flavor to your meals and offers a wide range of health benefits. So go ahead and give jackfruit a try – your taste buds and your body will thank you! This article originally appeared on Wealth of Geeks.
