U is for the Undead
Hello!
As the name suggests, the undead are creatures that have died but continue to exist in some form, often animated by magic, curses, or unfinished business.

The undead come in many forms:
Zombies: Reanimated corpses, often mindless and driven by hunger or a singular purpose.Ghosts: Spirits of the deceased, often tied to a location or object due to unresolved emotions or curses.Skeletons: Stripped of flesh and animated by magic, these creatures are often used as servants or soldiers by necromancers.Liches: Immortal sorcerers who willingly embrace undeath to preserve their powers.Vampires: Undead beings that sustain themselves by feeding on the life force of the living, often through blood. In fantasy, the undead are frequently associated with necromancy—the dark art of raising and controlling the dead. They often serve as the minions of evil sorcerers, guardians of cursed tombs, or as restless spirits haunting the living.
Some tales explore the humanity of the undead, depicting them as tragic figures caught between life and death. Vampires struggling with their hunger, ghosts yearning for peace, or even liches reflecting on the cost of their immortality create depth and nuance to these creatures, making them more than just monsters.
The undead are rich in symbolic meaning. They represent the fear of death and the unknown, the consequences of defying nature, and the enduring power of memory and regret. Their existence often serves as a warning about the dangers of hubris, unchecked ambition, or an inability to let go of the past. In some cases, the undead can symbolise resilience or the refusal to be forgotten, especially in stories where they return to right a wrong or protect something important. This duality makes them both frightening and fascinating, embodying the fine line between life and death.
The undead offer a unique blend of horror, mystery, and moral complexity. Whether as terrifying adversaries, tragic characters, or eerie reminders of life’s impermanence, they captivate the imagination and challenge our perceptions of mortality. Bottom of Form

T is for Typhon
Hello!
Known as the “Father of All Monsters,” Typhon is, not surprising, the ultimate embodiment of chaos and destruction. He is often depicted as a gigantic creature with a man’s body and a serpent’s tail instead of legs. He has a hundred dragon heads sprouting out of his hands and body with eyes that glow with fire. His voice is said to be a cacophony of terrifying sounds, from roaring lions to hissing snakes.

In Greek mythology, Typhon was the last and most fearsome child of Gaia (Earth) and Tartarus (the Abyss). Typhon challenged the reign of the Olympian gods, especially Zeus, in a cataclysmic battle for dominance over the cosmos. Typhon’s battle with Zeus was a clash of titanic proportions. Typhon was nearly victorious, but Zeus ultimately triumphed, hurling thunderbolts to subdue the monster and imprison him beneath Mount Etna. To this day, Typhon is said to be the cause of volcanic eruptions and violent storms, a reminder of his lingering presence and power. To watch a short clip about Typhon and his battle against Zeus click here.
In modern fantasy, Typhon’s monstrous form and immense power make him a favourite antagonist in novels particularly in epic tales that feature battles between gods or titanic forces of good and evil. Some stories present him as a near-unstoppable force of destruction, while others reinterpret him as a tragic figure, cursed to eternal rage and exile. In other stories, Typhon is the progenitor of monstrous creatures, spawning entire armies of beasts to challenge the heroes.
As an elemental force, Typhon is often tied to themes of nature’s raw power. He represents earthquakes, hurricanes, and volcanic eruptions—all reminders of humanity’s vulnerability in the face of untamed natural forces.
Typhon therefore symbolises chaos, destruction, and the struggle between order and disorder. His myth reflects the fear of the uncontrollable—whether it is natural disasters or the darker, more primal aspects of existence. His defeat by Zeus highlights the triumph of order and civilization over chaos, but his continued influence reminds us that such forces can never be entirely subdued.

T is for Tritons
Hello!
At the entrance of the capital city, Valletta, there is a beautiful fountain with three tritons in the centre. Each time I pass the Triton Fountain, I cannot help stopping for a moment to admire the beauty and grace of the creatures cast in bronze.

Tritons are majestic aquatic beings that are half-human and half-fish. Typically depicted with the upper body of a human and the lower half of a fish or aquatic creature, tritons are often portrayed as guardians of the ocean and are therefore deeply connected to the mysteries of the sea and underwater realms.
The triton derives its name from Greek mythology, where Triton was the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea, and Amphitrite, his queen. Triton, often described as a merman with a conch shell used to calm or stir the waves, was seen as a powerful figure in marine lore. Over time, “triton” came to describe an entire race of sea-dwelling beings.
In modern fantasy, tritons are frequently depicted as noble and enigmatic creatures who dwell in underwater cities built from coral, pearls, and other treasures of the ocean. These beings are often portrayed as protectors of the sea, using their wisdom and magical abilities to guard it against threats from both the depths and the surface world.
Tritons are known for their harmonious connection with marine life, often shown riding sea creatures or summoning schools of fish to their aid. While some stories present them as aloof or distrustful of land dwellers, others emphasise their role as mediators, working to maintain a balance between the land and the sea.
In many tales, tritons embody themes of balance and protection, serving as a warning about the importance of preserving the natural world. Their role as guardians reflects the need for harmony between humanity and nature, a message that resonates strongly in contemporary environmental narratives.
Whether as wise protectors, powerful warriors, or solitary wanderers of the deep, tritons represent the beauty and complexity of the marine world. They invite us to imagine the hidden realms beneath the waves and to consider our own relationship with the vast and vital oceans.

T is for Troll
Hello!
Trolls are one of the most recognizable creatures in fantasy, often depicted as large, brutish, and fearsome beings that inhabit dark forests, rocky caves, or high mountain peaks. Known for their strength and intimidating presence, trolls are often portrayed as simple-minded monsters. But they can also be complex characters, ranging from terrifying foes to tragic figures.

Trolls originate from Norse and Scandinavian mythology, where they were described as massive, humanoid beings with ties to nature and the wilderness. In these legends, trolls were often associated with specific landmarks, such as mountains, boulders, or caves, and were believed to turn to stone when exposed to sunlight—a detail that persists in many modern stories.
Trolls in folklore were not just physical threats; they were often seen as malevolent forces that represented the dangers of the untamed wild. They were known to harass travellers, steal livestock, and even abduct humans. However, some stories painted trolls as solitary creatures who avoided human interaction unless provoked.
In modern fantasy, trolls take on a variety of forms. They are still frequently depicted as hulking, grotesque creatures with thick, leathery skin, enormous strength, and a penchant for violence. Some versions still portray them as dim-witted monsters who serve as cannon fodder for adventurers, while others present trolls as cunning predators with a taste for human flesh. In fact, in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, trolls are brutal creatures used by dark forces in battle, while in Harry Potter, they appear as slow and stupid, but dangerously strong beings. Perhaps, the idea of trolls turning to stone in sunlight may hold symbolic meaning, representing ignorance or evil that cannot survive in the light of truth or understanding.
Despite their monstrous reputation, some modern interpretations show trolls in a different light, portraying them as misunderstood or even sympathetic creatures.
Trolls remain a staple of fantasy storytelling, capturing the imagination with their massive size, raw power, and deep ties to the natural world. Whether portrayed as monstrous villains or misunderstood outcasts, trolls remind us of the challenges and dangers that lurk in the wilderness—and the need to balance strength with intelligence when facing them. With their enduring presence in myth and media, trolls continue to be powerful and versatile figures in the realms of fantasy.

S is for Salamander
Hello!
While real-world salamanders are small amphibians, the fantasy version of the salamander is a creature that lives within fire.

The idea of the salamander as a fire-dwelling creature goes back to ancient and medieval folklore. Alchemists and philosophers believed that salamanders could survive and even thrive in fire, and this association with flames turned the salamander into a symbol of fire.
In reality, since real life salamanders hibernate in logs, this might have given rise to the myth since when the logs are used as fuel, the creature would wake up and flee out of the fire.
In modern fantasy, salamanders are often depicted as small, lizard-like creatures that radiate heat or appear with a fiery aura. Sometimes, they are guardians of volcanic areas, or they emerge from the embers and ash of enchanted forests. Some fantasy depictions show salamanders with scales that glow like molten lava or flames running along their bodies. These creatures are sometimes allies to wizards and mages, aiding those with elemental powers, while in other tales, they are elusive creatures, challenging heroes who seek their power.
Salamanders can also however be larger, dragon-like creatures in some fantasy worlds. They may serve as guardians of fire magic or only appear in the presence of a true flame master. Often, those who encounter salamanders are forced to submit to trials that test their courage, determination, and respect for the natural power of fire.
The salamander’s connection to fire makes it a powerful symbol of transformation, resilience, and endurance. Fire, in many cultures, represents purification, change, and even passion, and the salamander’s ability to live within this element reflects an unwavering ability to adapt and thrive. At the same time, the salamander cautions against the reckless use of fire, urging respect for its destructive power. This creature, therefore, embodies the dual nature of fire—both life-giving and life-taking—and serves as a reminder of the delicate balance required when wielding any elemental force.

To save his father, Pietre must partner with the ruling entities who want him and his family dead. And when Wittendon discovers the existence of a secret rebel faction within the kingdom, he’s forced to decide whether he values love over order.

S is for Satyr
Hello!
Satyrs have the upper body of a human and the horns, legs and tails of a goat. They are known for their love of music, revelry, and mischief and are to be found in forests and meadows living a carefree and wild life.

Satyrs have their roots in ancient Greek mythology where they were followers of Dionysus, the god of wine, fertility, and pleasure. Satyrs roamed the wilderness, engaging in lively celebrations that included dancing, playing music, and drinking wine. They were known for their love for women, often seen chasing after nymphs and indulging in their every desire. Satyrs represented the uninhibited side of human nature and were closely tied to the cycles of life and growth.
In modern fantasy, satyrs have retained some of their ancient Greek characteristics but have become more toned down. They may act as protectors of the woods, using their playful and trickster-like abilities to ward off intruders or guide lost travellers. Their love of music and celebration has remained, with satyrs often playing pipes or flutes, enchanting those who hear their melodies. Satyrs may serve as allies to heroes on quests, using their deep knowledge of the forest and magical abilities to help navigate the wilds. In contemporary stories, satyrs are sometimes confused with fauns, but more often than not, they are still portrayed as chaotic, wild forces who embody the unpredictable beauty and danger of the natural world.
The dual nature—human and animal—of satyrs mirrors the tension between civilization and instinct, structure and freedom. In many stories, satyrs challenge the idea that life must always be ordered or controlled, reminding us of the importance of embracing the natural world and our own inner desires. Satyrs represent a life lived for the moment, where joy, pleasure, and connection to nature are celebrated without restraint. But their behaviour can also lead to trouble, showcasing the consequences of unchecked desire and wildness.
Whether portrayed as mischievous tricksters, carefree revellers, or protectors of the wild, satyrs bring a sense of joy and vitality to the fantasy world.

S is for Succubus
Hello!
The succubus is a demon who takes on an attractive form to seduce human male victims through dreams or physical contact and drain their energy and vitality. Through her captivating appearance and deadly nature, the succubus embodies dual forces: that of temptation and danger.
Her male counterpart is the incubus, who is similarly known for seducing women in their dreams.

The succubus has its roots in medieval European folklore. In contemporary fantasy, the succubus has evolved into a more complex character. While still retaining her seductive powers, she is often portrayed with greater depth, sometimes as a tragic figure trapped by her own nature or as an anti-hero.
Therefore, while succubi in modern fantasy are still depicted as powerful beings who manipulate others through their charm, they are not always purely evil; some interpretations show succubi struggling with their demonic urges or using their powers for survival rather than malicious intent. This duality adds intrigue to their character.
In many stories, succubi can shapeshift, allowing them to adopt whatever form is most alluring to their target. But beyond seduction, succubi often possess other supernatural powers, such as immortality, enhanced strength, or the ability to drain energy or life from those they touch. This ability to siphon vitality is what makes them so dangerous—what begins as attraction can quickly turn deadly.
At its core, the succubus represents the destructive potential of unchecked desire and temptation. She embodies the darker side of attraction, where what seems beautiful and enticing on the surface hides a deadly cost beneath. In this way, the succubus serves as a cautionary figure, warning against the dangers of being controlled by one’s passions.
The succubus remains one of the most captivating and complex figures in fantasy. Whether portrayed as a seductive villain or a morally ambiguous character, her ability to both enchant and destroy reminds us of the fine line between attraction and peril.

S is for the Sphinx
Hello! Known for its riddles, vast knowledge, and intimidating presence, the sphinx is one of the most well-known fantasy creatures. It is often portrayed as a guardian of ancient secrets, forbidden knowledge or hidden treasure.
The sphinx has its roots in both Egyptian and Greek mythology, where it is depicted with different characteristics.

In ancient Egypt, the sphinx has the body of a lion and a human head, usually of a male. It is a symbol of protection and power, most famously represented by the colossal statue—the Great Sphinx of Giza, which stands guard over important tombs and sacred spaces with a calm, imposing presence.
In Greek mythology, the sphinx has the wings of an eagle, the body and feet of a lion, the head and upper body of a woman, and, sometimes, the tail of a serpent. The Greek sphinx takes on a more dangerous role. It is best known from the myth of Oedipus, where it guards the city of Thebes and poses a deadly riddle to travellers. Those who cannot solve the riddle are devoured by the sphinx, highlighting its role as a gatekeeper to knowledge that, if not understood, can have fatal consequences.
In modern fantasy, the sphinx often continues its role as a guardian or keeper of ancient knowledge. Whether guarding the entrance to a hidden temple, a treasure, or a library of forbidden knowledge, the sphinx might be encountered by heroes seeking wisdom or confronting challenges. Its riddles and cryptic speech could be an obstacle a hero must overcome to prove their worth or advance in their quest.
Unlike other fantasy creatures that rely on brute strength or magic, the sphinx is more cerebral, testing the hero’s intelligence and wisdom. Its presence in a story often adds a layer of mystery, encouraging characters to think deeply about the challenges they face. Solving the sphinx’s riddle typically symbolises personal growth or a deeper understanding of the world.
The sphinx is rich in symbolism. The lion’s body reflects physical strength and dominance, while the human head represents wisdom, intellect, and the power of thought. This combination suggests that true power comes from balancing the two—harnessing both physical and mental strength.
The sphinx’s role as a guardian also emphasises the idea that knowledge and wisdom are not easily attained. They require effort and sometimes sacrifice. In this way, the sphinx can be seen as a symbol of a journey to self-discovery.
It serves as a reminder that not all obstacles can be overcome with force alone. The sphinx’s riddles continue to captivate audiences, making it a timeless figure in both mythology and fantasy storytelling.
As long as there are secrets to uncover and mysteries to solve, the sphinx will remain a key figure in fantasy, challenging heroes and thinkers alike to prove their worth.

S is for Sprites
Hello!
It’s been a good month, writing-wise. I’m working on the second draft on Lady of Hereafter (I’m going with that title for the moment) and significantly changed aspects in most of the first scenes. It also meant ditching around three chapters and re-writing them based on my crit partners’ feedback, but I think it’s leading to a tighter and better plot. I’m about halfway through so there’s still a longish road ahead and with school starting next week, the process is going to slow down. But that’s fine. It’s one of the benefits of self-publishing as I can take the time I need to finish my work.
Here’s an exchange I enjoyed revisiting:
Situation: when Kari, the protagonist, is on the run and has pawned the only item of value she owns to have money to pay for a healer for her dying friend.
“Careful with that, girl.”
I glanced up from the ring I was examining while I waited. A tall, brown-skinned young man with unshaven cheeks and the muscular build of a fighter watched me. The hilt of a serviceable sword jutted out from beneath his fur-trimmed cloak, a cloak meant for winter.
A thick brow rose as I surveyed him. “Can you see me? That’s a first.”
Realisation made me start. A ghost? I hadn’t noticed the slight fuzziness round him—perhaps because the smell of sea-spray didn’t waft off him. If anything, he smelt of wood-smoke and pine needles. But no ghost had ever seen me before. Or spoken to me. His clothing pointed at the spectre being from the North. Was the ghost Dragonian? A magic wielder? What else would explain his ability to communicate with me?
“Were you spying on Etha?” I murmured.
The ghost cocked his head and the green-to-brown eyes danced. “Do I look the part? Buy the ring and let’s get out of here.”
“I don’t have money to waste.” A sudden thought stilled me. “Unless…”
“Unless?”
“Are you a mage? Can you cure a man with a pierced lung?”
“Why should I?”
“Because you and the ring will remain in the shop otherwise?”
His mouth tightened. “The ring needs to return to Dragonia.”
“Why?”
“My business.”
“Then of course the ring remains in Merecastle.”
I love the verbal clashes between the mage and Kari, and I hope readers will grow to love these characters too.
Now on to today’s fantasy creature…
S is for Sprite

Sprites are tiny elemental beings brimming with magic. These creatures are often depicted as guardians of nature, protecting forests, rivers, and other natural spaces. With their delicate wings and glowing, translucent forms, sprites personify the beauty and mystery of the natural world.
In many fantasy stories, sprites are closely connected to the elements, often associated with air, water, earth, or fire. They live in secluded groves, streams and forests. While small and seemingly fragile, sprites possess immense magical powers, which they use to protect the natural world and ward off those who threaten it. In fact, when provoked, they can summon the forces of nature to defend their home.
Sprites have deep roots in European folklore, especially in Celtic and English traditions. They are often portrayed as similar to fairies, with many stories depicting them as trickster-like beings that lead travellers astray or play harmless pranks on humans. Despite their playful tendencies, sprites are rarely malicious.
In modern fantasy, sprites are frequently featured as charming side characters or allies to heroes. Their small size and swift movements make them elusive, and their ability to blend into their environment and harness elemental magic makes them valuable companions on adventurous quests.
Sprites often symbolise innocence, lightness, and the enchanting qualities of nature. Their role as protectors also highlights in fantasy themes of preservation, sustainability, and respect for the earth, themes that resonate strongly in modern times. Sprites, in their gentle and playful ways, remind us of the magic that exists in the natural world and the importance of caring for it.
Even the tiniest creatures can hold great power and significance.

Read about paintings that are truer than true-to-life, or the heart-wrenching decision Poseidon’s human son-in-law has to take, or perhaps you’ll prefer a glimpse of life after an apocalypse, or a story about a space pirate with an uncomfortable past.
And if you like longer reads, Colours of Fantasy gives you a taste of Book One of two series: The Hyllethan Gifts Trilogy and Fire Dance Chronicles.
Till next time! Wishing you a great two weeks with a good book!

P.S. If you’ve read any of my novels, I would really, REALLY appreciate a review for the book/s, even if it’s not a great one! Just a rating is fine, too. It really helps other fans of fantasy to decide whether to pick up the book or not.

S is for Selkie
Hello!
How have July and August flown past so quickly? Here we are in September and my colleagues and I are gearing up for a new scholastic year. It’s always an exciting but busy time for me. However, I’ve managed to eke some time to continue editing my current work in progress—an epic fantasy with paranormal elements. The protagonist—Kari—is able to see ghosts and ends up having to work with one to solve the mystery surrounding her grandmother’s murder, as well as assist the ghost to complete his mission, and solve a couple of other crimes in the process. As usual in my stories, a romantic element is entwined with the fantasy and the mystery. I’m happy with how the edits are going but I’m also considering a name change and I’d love some feedback. So far, I’m considering
Quest of Dragons and Ghosts OR Lady of Hereafter
Which do you think sounds best? I really need help with this one!

Now on to today’s Fantasy Creature…

In folklore and fantasy, the selkie stands out as one of the most enchanting and bittersweet creatures of the sea. Originating from the folklore of Scotland and Ireland, selkies are mysterious, gentle beings who live as seals in the ocean but can shed their skins to become human on land. Their stories are woven with themes of love, loss, and the eternal pull of the sea.
Selkies embody a fascinating duality, existing between two worlds—both the wild, untamed sea and the human realm. As seals, they are graceful and elusive. When they come ashore, they shed their seal skins and take on human form—selkies can be either male or female. They are often described as breathtakingly beautiful.
The most common selkie tales involve love stories between selkies and humans. These stories often begin with a human discovering a selkie’s discarded seal skin and hiding it, thereby trapping the selkie in human form. The selkie, unable to return to the sea without their skin, marries the human and lives on land, often begetting children. However, these stories usually end in tragedy—eventually, the selkie finds their skin and returns to the sea, leaving behind a heartbroken spouse and children.
These tales serve as a reminder of the powerful, sometimes painful, connection between humans and nature, and the consequences of trying to possess what cannot be owned.
In modern fantasy, selkie stories often explore contemporary themes, such as identity, belonging, and the environment. In these modern retellings, selkies might struggle with their dual identity, or serve as symbols of the environment, representing the sea’s beauty and vulnerability. Selkie stories also speak of the human desire to control and possess the wild, often at a great cost. They remind us that true freedom and love involve letting go, rather than holding on too tightly.
The selkie remains one of the most captivating creatures in fantasy. Their stories, filled with love and longing, offering a poignant reflection on the nature of love, and the deep, unbreakable connection between humans and the wild.

When on their journey to reach their craft they stop to help a galley under enemy attack, they attract the attention of Dardarin, the Lysenthean army’s general, who suspects Maia and Ryse are not who they claim to be but are in fact enemy spies. With Dardarin following their every move to entrap them in their lies and with the plight of the downtrodden Lisentheans entangling Maia in the rebellion’s web, Maia races against the clock to find a way to protect all those she cares about on both worlds—even if doing so could mean she’d lose Ryse.
