W is for Will-o’-the-Wisp
Hello!
A Will-o’-the-wisp appears as a faint, ghostly light—usually bluish or white—glowing in the distance and floating just above the ground. It moves away whenever someone tries to follow it. These wisps are often portrayed as magical or spirit-like creatures, which are sometimes malevolent and at other times simply mysterious. They are known to lure travellers off safe paths, leading them deeper into dangerous or deadly terrain.

The Will-o’-the-wisp appears in many legends. British and Irish folklore describes it as the ghost of a mischievous soul or a doomed spirit cursed to wander the moors. In Scandinavian tales, the light is often said to be a treasure guardian, leading greedy adventurers astray. On the other hand, Native American stories sometimes link mysterious lights to spirits or omens from the natural world.
In fantasy, their appearance often signals a turning point in a story, where the choice to follow the light may lead to either a discovery or destruction. They could also be cautionary figures, warning protagonists against straying too far from the path—or perhaps encouraging heroes to embrace the unknown.
The Will-o’-the-wisp is rich in symbolism. It often represents:
Temptation and deception – A seemingly helpful light that leads one astray. The unknown – A symbol of mystery and the thin veil between the living and the dead.Lost souls – In some traditions, they are the remnants of unfulfilled lives, cursed to wander.Whether ghost lights, nature spirits, or magical tricksters, these glowing guides challenge us to question what we see and where we’re going. Are they leading us to treasure, truth, or tragedy? That, as always, depends on the story.

W is for Witch
Hello!
Witches are typically practitioners of magic who channel natural, spiritual, or mystical forces to affect the world. They often draw their power from rituals, potions, and/or a connection with the unseen. Witches can be healers, seers, necromancers, or even shapeshifters. Some are solitary figures, living on the outskirts of society, while others belong to covens or secret magical orders.

Witches appear in many cultures. European folklore often paints witches as women with secret knowledge—sometimes benevolent herbalists, other times cursed or condemned figures accused of consorting with demons. African and Caribbean traditions include powerful witch-doctors and spiritualists who interact with spirits and ancestors. On the other hand, Asian legends feature witches as mystics, shamans, or ghostly beings, often tied to natural or ancestral magic.
These varied traditions have influenced how witches appear in modern fantasy as both feared outcasts and powerful beings. In fact, fantasy literature presents witches in a wide range of roles:
The Wise Witch – A mentor figure who offers guidance. The Wicked Witch – A villain wielding dark magic, such as the iconic Wicked Witch of the West. The Reluctant Witch – A character discovering her powers and learning to control them, often central to coming-of-age tales. The Elemental Witch – A magic-user tied to earth, fire, air, or water, drawing power from the natural world.Modern portrayals include witches of all genders and alignments, exploring complex themes of identity, empowerment, and resistance.
Witches carry rich symbolic weight in fantasy. Often existing outside societal norms, witches could symbolise autonomy and resistance, or hidden truths, ancient lore, and the pursuit of wisdom—sometimes at a cost. In many stories, witches embody humanity’s unease with things it cannot control or understand.
Whether casting protective charms, cursing enemies, or speaking with spirits, witches remain important figures in the world of fantasy.

W is for Warlock
Hello!
The results of the poll I ran in my last newsletter produced some unexpected results. 33% of the respondents prefer audiobooks to ebooks and paperbacks. This was an eyeopener for me. But it made me realise that I need to add another section to the book recommendations at the bottom of the post: so from now on, I’m adding a section for Audiobooks to the list. One of my readers also kindly pointed out that my audiobooks can be read for free with an Audible Plus subscription. Thank you, Susan, for that reminder
. Hope you all find your next exciting read from the selection below.
Now on to this week’s fantasy creature…
W is for Warlock

Few magic users carry the same characteristics of danger and mystique as the warlock. Often driven by ambition, warlocks are male wielders of powerful, often forbidden, magic. Unlike traditional wizards who gain their abilities through scholarly study, warlocks are typically portrayed as gaining their powers through pacts with powerful beings, such as spirits, demons, the fey, or ancient gods. This pact grants them access to devastating spells, knowledge beyond mortal understanding, and sometimes strange transformations.
In many fantasy settings, warlocks are bound to the terms of their agreement with their patron, which may involve performing dark deeds, protecting certain secrets, or spreading chaos and fear. The nature of the pact also shapes the warlock’s abilities, personality, and fate.
In fantasy, warlocks are frequently anti-heroes—as incredible power carries the risk of corruption. Some use their magic to exact revenge or control others. A few struggle to break their bonds or use their powers for good, despite its origin.
Warlocks often play the role of shadowy advisors, cursed wanderers, or lone figures misunderstood by the world around them.
The warlock symbolises a number of powerful ideas in fantasy:
The pursuit of forbidden knowledge – Warlocks embody the allure and danger of seeking power beyond one’s limits.Moral ambiguity – Their reliance on external forces often places them in grey areas of ethics and loyalty. The burden of choice – They remind us that all power has a price, and every pact is a gamble with fate.Defined by ambition, shaped by their patrons, and walking a fine line between power and peril, warlocks enhance fantasy tales. Their character ensure a story which is full of tension, purpose, and danger. Whether feared, pitied, or revered, the warlock’s journey poses the eternal question: is power worth the price?

W is for Wyvern
Hello!
I’ve some exciting news! My books are now also available in audiobook format. When Amazon reached out with an invite to turn my books into audio using their software, I was thrilled but also sceptical. I believed nothing beats human narration for quality, yet when I tested the AI narration, I was impressed by how the technology has advanced these last months, so I went for it. Why not check it out? (The links to my books are at the bottom of the page and you can listen to the first chapters.)
Do you usually listen to audiobooks, or prefer to read ebooks or paperbacks? I’d love to know your thoughts.
Now on to this week’s fantasy creature…
W is for Wyvern

Wyverns are often confused with dragons. Wyverns however have two legs and two wings, unlike dragons, which usually have four legs and a pair of wings. They are often portrayed as smaller than dragons, but what they lack in size, they make up for in agility and ferocity. Their serpentine tails often end in barbs or stingers, and some variations breathe fire, spit venom, or exude poisonous fumes. While dragons might be ancient, wise, or even magical, wyverns are most often portrayed as wild, untamable beasts.
Wyverns are now a fixture in fantasy literature. Whether as fearsome enemies or exotic mounts, their roles vary widely depending on the setting, for example, wyverns sometimes serve as terrifying guardians or as aerial weapons used by villainous armies.
Wyverns often represent raw power. They are creatures of instinct, not intellect—reminding us of nature’s untamed and dangerous side. In stories, they may symbolise:
Chaos and aggression – Wild and unpredictable, they can be a force of destruction. The dangers of ambition – Characters who try to tame a wyvern often find themselves outmatched.Untamed wilderness – Their presence suggests a world where humanity does not rule everything.Wyverns may seem less magical and noble than dragons, but they’re no less memorable. Their speed and savagery make them a favourite in the world of fantasy. Whether swooping down from mountain peaks or coiled protectively over treasure, wyverns offer a thrilling challenge to heroes, becoming a symbol of wild power and danger in fantasy.

W is for the White Lady
Hello!
The White Lady is a ghostly figure found in folklore and fantasy around the world, often portrayed as a beautiful, pale-faced woman dressed in flowing white garments. She is typically associated with themes of love, loss, betrayal, and tragedy.

Legends of the White Lady can be found in many cultures, each telling similar stories of a female spirit who roams castles, forests, or the roadside in search of peace. We have our own White Ladies in Malta
Despite cultural differences, tales about a White Lady share common threads, for example:
in Europe: In European folklore, White Lady spirits often haunt old manors, castles, or bridges. They are said to be the ghosts of women who died tragically—sometimes murdered by a lover or are victims of betrayal. In many stories, they appear as omens of death or misfortune.in Latin America – The tale of La Llorona (“The Weeping Woman”) is one of the most famous White Lady legends. In this version, a woman’s overwhelming grief over the loss of her children leads her spirit to wander riversides, eternally weeping and searching for them.in Asia – Similar figures appear in Asian folklore, such as the Japanese Yūrei—spirits of women who suffered great sorrow or betrayal and cannot rest in peace. In modern fantasy, the White Lady often appears as:
A mournful ghost – Bound to the place of her death, endlessly reliving her sorrow or seeking revenge.A harbinger of doom – Some tales depict the White Lady as a warning spirit, appearing before great misfortune or death.A guardian or guide – Less commonly, the White Lady serves as a helpful spirit, guiding the living or protecting certain places. The White Lady appears in numerous novels. Her ethereal beauty and tragic backstory make her an interesting figure, balancing between horror and heartbreak. She often symbolises deep emotional themes such as grief and loss, and the inability to escape the past.
Whether feared as an omen or pitied as a tragic soul, the White Lady embodies powerful emotions such as grief, loss, and the desire for closure. As long as stories of love and betrayal endure, the spectral figure of the White Lady will probably continue to wander through the pages of myth and fantasy.

W is for Werewolf
Hello!
Werewolves are one of the most iconic creatures in fantasy and horror. These legendary shapeshifters, cursed to transform into wolves or wolf-like monsters under the full moon, have been a part of folklore for centuries. Whether depicted as mindless killers or tragic figures struggling with their inner nature, werewolves continue to captivate audiences across books, films, and mythology.

The concept of humans transforming into wolves dates back to ancient times. The Greeks told the story of Lycaon, a king cursed by Zeus to become a wolf after offending the gods—an origin that gave rise to the term lycanthropy. In medieval Europe, werewolf legends became widespread, often linked to witchcraft and dark pacts with the devil. These creatures were feared as cursed beings who lost control of their humanity when they transformed.
Some cultures, however, saw wolf-like shapeshifters in a more neutral or even heroic light. Norse mythology mentions warriors called berserkers, who entered a trance-like state in battle, channelling the spirit of wolves or bears for unmatched ferocity. Similarly, some Native American and Siberian traditions featured shamans who could spiritually or physically transform into wolves.
In modern fantasy, werewolves have taken many forms, from monstrous villains to misunderstood antiheroes. Some common depictions include ordinary humans afflicted with a curse or bitten by another werewolf, thereby doomed to transform under the full moon into uncontrollable, bloodthirsty creatures. Other stories depict werewolves as individuals who can shift between human and wolf-form at will, using their abilities as a gift rather than a curse.
In fantasy, werewolves appear as either noble warriors, wild outcasts, or terrifying predators. They may serve as protectors of nature, defenders of their pack, or uncontrollable forces of destruction.
Werewolves represent many themes, including:
The Duality of Human Nature – The struggle between civilisation and primal instinct is central to many werewolf stories, reflecting humanity’s battle with its darker urges.Loss of Control – The fear of losing control over oneself, whether due to anger, desire, or external forces, is a major theme in werewolf tales.Transformation and Identity – Many werewolf stories explore the idea of personal transformation, both literal and metaphorical, as characters grapple with their changing nature.Werewolves continue to be a powerful presence in fantasy. Their stories resonate because they tap into something deeply human—the tension between reason and instinct, order and chaos. Whether they are cursed creatures of the night or noble shapeshifters embracing their true nature, werewolves will always remain one of the most fascinating beings in myth and fantasy.

W is for Warg
Hello!
Wargs are fearsome wolf-like creatures, known for their immense size, cunning intelligence, and ruthless nature. They are often portrayed as the terrifying mounts of dark warriors or as independent predators that strike fear into the hearts of those who cross their path.

The term warg (sometimes spelled vargr) has roots in Old Norse mythology, where it referred to monstrous wolves such as Fenrir, the wolf prophesied to bring destruction to the gods during Ragnarök. The word vargr also carried meanings of an outlaw or a destructive force. These associations made wolves—and by extension, wargs—symbols of chaos, doom, and untamed wilderness.
In modern fantasy, wargs were popularised by J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, where they appear as massive, intelligent creatures allied with goblins and orcs. They are not just beasts, but creatures with a malevolent will of their own, making them formidable opponents.
Wargs have become a staple of fantasy fiction. They are often depicted as:
Mounts for Evil Creatures – In many stories, wargs serve as battle mounts for goblins, orcs, or other dark forces, making them an essential part of fantasy warfare.Feral Predators – Unlike regular wolves, wargs are often portrayed as larger, stronger, and more intelligent, hunting in packs and showing a level of tactical awareness.Shape-shifters or Bonded Beasts – In some fantasy worlds, “wargs” are not just wolves but people who can mentally or physically merge with these creatures, such as the wargs in Game of Thrones,Wargs symbolise the untamed and brutal aspects of nature. Their intelligence sets them apart from typical predators, making them even more dangerous. In some interpretations, they represent the corruption of nature—beasts that have been twisted by dark forces into something unnatural and terrifying.
Whether serving as deadly mounts in battle, cunning lone hunters, or supernatural beings with a deep connection to dark magic, wargs are an interesting presence in fantasy. Their combination of raw power, intelligence, and a primal, almost mystical quality ensures that they remain some of the most fearsome creatures to roam the realms of myth and imagination.

V is for Vampire
Hello!
Vampires are among the most fascinating creatures in fantasy, meshing a blend of horror, mystery, and dark romance. Vampires are undead creatures, that is creatures who were once human and alive but died and returned to prey on the living. From their origins in ancient folklore to their reinvention in modern literature and film, these immortal beings of the night with an appetite for blood continue to intrigue and terrify audiences around the world.

The idea of the vampire dates back centuries, with early versions appearing in folklore from various cultures. Many ancient civilizations, including the Mesopotamians, Greeks, and Slavs, had legends of undead creatures that fed on the living. These early vampires were often monstrous corpses rather than the alluring figures we associate with them today.
The modern image of the vampire—pale, aristocratic, and seductive—emerged in 18th- and 19th-century European literature. Works like The Vampyre by John Polidori and Dracula by Bram Stoker helped shape the vampire into a cunning and charismatic predator, tied to gothic horror.
Today, vampires come in many forms. Some remain fearsome, bloodthirsty creatures lurking in the shadows, while others are tragic antiheroes struggling with their immortality. Books like Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice and Twilight by Stephenie Meyer have explored vampires as complex beings torn between their monstrous nature and human emotions.
Vampires are often powerful beings with fangs and supernatural abilities such as enhanced strength, speed, and hypnotic charm. Sunlight destroy or weakens them and some stories show that they can turn into bats. Vampires are rich in symbolic meaning. They can represent:
Death and immortality – A reminder of humanity’s fear of death and the price of eternal life.Desire and temptation – Many vampire stories explore themes of forbidden love and power.Parasitism and corruption – Vampires feed on others, making them symbols of greed, addiction, or exploitation.Isolation and tragedy – Their immortality often condemns them to loneliness, watching as time moves on without them.Few creatures in fantasy are as versatile as vampires. Whether they are terrifying monsters, seductive villains, or brooding antiheroes, they continue to capture our imagination.

V is for Valkyrie
Hello!
Valkyries are beautiful, powerful warrior-maidens who serve Odin, the Allfather of the gods, guiding fallen warriors to their destiny in the afterlife.

The word “valkyrie” comes from the Old Norse valkyrja, meaning “chooser of the slain.” These celestial figures were believed to descend upon battlefields, selecting which warriors would die and which would survive. Those deemed worthy were taken to Valhalla, Odin’s great hall, where they would feast and train for Ragnarok—the final battle at the end of the world.
In some myths, valkyries are described as daughters of Odin, while in others, they are mortal women elevated to divine status. They are often associated with ravens and wolves, creatures linked to Odin and the brutal realities of war. Some stories even portray them as lovers of mortal heroes, blurring the line between the divine and personal fate.
In modern fantasy, valkyries are often reimagined as warrior-goddesses, angelic figures, or even supernatural bounty hunters. They frequently appear in books, films, and games as formidable fighters, clad in shining armour and wielding legendary weapons. Their portrayal varies—from noble protectors of the fallen to fearsome avengers of the gods.
In some stories, valkyries are given individual personalities and complex motivations, rather than serving only as Odin’s enforcers. They may struggle with their duty, question their role in the cycle of war, or even defy the gods in pursuit of their own path.
Valkyries represent courage, fate, and honour. Their presence on the battlefield signifies both the glory of victory and the inevitability of death. They embody the idea that heroism is not just about survival but about facing one’s destiny with bravery.
They also symbolise the power of women in mythology and fantasy. Unlike many ancient depictions of female figures, valkyries are not passive or confined to domestic roles—they are active participants in battle, decision-makers in the fate of men, and divine figures who wield power over life and death.
The valkyrie remains one of the most enduring and inspiring figures in mythology and fantasy. Whether seen as warriors, guides of the fallen, or independent beings seeking their own destiny, they continue to capture the imagination.

But Maia’s heart is torn: their craft is too small to take them as well as all her family and leaving with Ryse means abandoning family members in a land ravaged by war and rebellion.
When on their journey to reach their craft they stop to help a galley under enemy attack, they attract the attention of Dardarin, the Lysenthean army’s general, who suspects Maia and Ryse are not who they claim to be but are in fact enemy spies. With Dardarin following their every move to entrap them in their lies and with the plight of the downtrodden Lisentheans entangling Maia in the rebellion’s web, Maia races against the clock to find a way to protect all those she cares about on both worlds—even if doing so could mean she’d lose Ryse.

U is for Unicorn
Hello!
The unicorn is one of the most beloved creatures in fantasy. Typically depicted as a horse-like creature with a single horn on its head, the unicorn is a symbol of purity, innocence, and untamed magic that has captured the human imagination for centuries.

Unicorns have roots in ancient mythology and folklore, appearing in the legends of various cultures. References to unicorn-like creatures date back to ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, and India. In medieval European lore, the unicorn became a symbol of purity. The unicorn’s horn was believed to possess magical properties, such as the ability to purify water and heal illnesses, making it highly sought after by kings and alchemists alike.
In modern fantasy, unicorns are often portrayed as elusive and magical beings, inhabiting enchanted forests or hidden realms. They are symbols of untouched nature, embodying the idea of something rare and beautiful that can only be approached with respect and purity of heart.
Unicorns are frequently depicted as allies of the forces of goodness, offering protection or healing to those in need. However, they are also portrayed as fiercely independent and mistrustful of humans, reflecting their association with wildness and freedom. In some darker tales, unicorns are hunted for their horns, highlighting themes of greed and the loss of innocence.
Unicorns symbolise purity and innocence. Their solitary nature and ethereal beauty remind us of the importance of preserving what is precious. At the same time, the unicorn is a symbol of the unattainable—a creature that exists on the border between the real and the imagined. This duality makes it a compelling figure in fantasy, as it embodies both hope and the bittersweet nature of chasing dreams.
Whether as a guardian of magical realms, a healer of the wounded, or a symbol of innocence, the unicorn continues to inspire wonder and awe. Its enduring legacy reminds us to cherish the rare and magical moments in life and to approach the world with a sense of curiosity and respect.
