Here’s an eclectic collection of short stories and longer stories that roam the world from the beaches of Hawaii to the badlands of New Mexico and from Times Square to the Kingdom of Tonga. At The Ugly American Book Club we are focused on Southeast Asia, so we are dismayed to find that only one of 14 stories delivers us to the region.
“Mango Rain” is set in Laos in February 2000. The protagonist is an American with (surprise!) a kind heart and purely good intentions. We’ve met Elliott Midler before in a cameo role. In the author’s first novel of Laos, “Hustle the East” Midler was a teacher in 1975. In “Mango Rain,” he returns to Luang Prabang as a doctor on the week-long Doctors Who Care medical mission.
Much has changed in Dr. Midler’s absence. The former Buddhist kingdom is now Communist. Gone from the streets are the beggars and the heavily armed police patrols. English-language signs have begun to sprout on guest houses and cafes. A new airport terminal has been built with foreign aid although the Lao government has not yet put in taxiways to reach it.
Some things have remained the same. When Dr. Midler and his colleagues deplane at a dilapidated hangar, Midler sees a wasp’s nest that may have been in the same place for a quarter century. The regional hospital where the American doctors set up shop to provide free medical care and surgery is in chronic disrepair. The people of the region who walk for days to see a doctor are impoverished. Despite it all, Dr. Midler is again struck by the charm and grace of the Lao people, especially the women, and especially the local host of the medical mission, Head Nurse Miss Bouadeng.
The arrival of the visiting American doctors shakes Nurse Bouadeng’s world. She questions her commitment to nursing in Laos and to Dr. Bernard Forcier, the French research physician who is researching tropical diseases and courting her in a decidedly desultory fashion.
When Dr. Midler does something nice for the nurse, he pays a price that threatens his future and the future of American medical missions in Laos.
The collection’s longest story, “The Man with 50 Wives”, a comedic Whodunit, is cagey about its locale. We meet a cast of characters in the high-society country-club clique surrounding a celebrated playboy poet who meets his end at his 50th birthday bash. All the names are Hispanic and there are hints that we are in the sophisticated capital of a corruption-tainted, class-conscious country once colonized by Spain. Careful readers may seize on a few clues — like the Tagalog word tsismis for gossp — to conclude we are in Manila.

The new novel follows the exploits of the three original narrators — the bumbling idealist Benny Bendit; Sangkhom, the Lao man who served Communists and Americans in times of conflict; and Chansamone, the charming and headstrong Lao woman they both loved.
Depressed after divorce and bankruptcy in Chicago, Benny returns to Laos to make a clean start, selling village-made soap for a non-profit. Repeating past missteps, Benny is living with a Lao woman he doesn’t trust. When Joyy comes home after a week away, she finds Benny dead, his body mutilated and his stomach stuffed with bamboo chips. Whereas Hustle the East focused on northern Laos, Moon the Night meanders through the south of Laos. In July 2018, Chan travels to Attapeu to inquire about Benny’s activity as a soap-seller. Unaware of each other’s involvement, Chan and Sam join relief and rescue efforts with unforeseen results for each of them.
Returning to Vientiane, Chan learns intriguing details from a flamboyant Lao caterer and the Coroner who filed the death-by-vampire–ghost finding in the case of Benny’s murder. Meanwhile Sam is lured to a rendezvous with a shady government agent cum wedding singer named Whisky Soda, who has laid a trap for him.
Readers who know Vientiane will recognize landmarks including the Mekong riverfront, Namphu Fountain, Kop Chai Deu and Spirit House restaurants, and the Bor Pen Nyang Bar.

The American narrator Paul “Benny” Bendit is a straight-arrow straight out of college in Illinois. As a newbie, he naively imagines he can help erase the image of the Ugly American in Southeast Asia. On his first day in Laos, Bendit glimpses Henry Kissinger on a historic peace mission that has dark implications for the 600-year-old Kingdom. Bendit also meets Jack Gaines, a feckless fellow teacher who’s siphoning money out of hopeless situations. From the get-go, Bendit marks Gaines as a charlatan. But seen through other eyes, Gaines is a complex con artist, a loathsome and lovable bad guy. In retrospect, Bendit recalls: “… It took me a while to figure out that in Laos the good guys were the bad guys.”
The second narrator is an orphan of colonialism who became a monk and a gravedigger. Sangkhom notes wryly that he and Gaines were born on opposite sides of the world and they started out on opposite side of the war. When East twains with West, their fates become entwined — but only as far as the next plot twist.
In the opinion of the third narrator, the enigmatic Lao ingénue Chansamone, Gaines is like a centipede: “The first two legs don’t tell the whole story.” A complicated love triangle arises out of chaos but the course of love doesn’t run true in a country on the verge of collapse.
Borrowing pages from The Ugly American, this new novel is like a Who’s Who of (Fictional) Americans Mucking About in Southeast Asia. Apart from Bendit and Gaines, we meet half a dozen Americans attempting to influence history or hustle the East. Tommy Mangold was a helicopter pilot and bona fide war hero in Vietnam before giving up his Air Force wings to work as a civilian in Laos. As an aid worker, he worked behind the scenes and below the radar to defend democracy in Asia. On the day Kissinger comes to Vientiane, Mangold curses all he’s done in the name of the democracy, and does a 180.
Mohawk Jones was born to missionaries in the mountains that merge northern Thailand with Laos. His knowledge of highlands culture and languages made him invaluable to America’s efforts to win the hearts and minds and military service of the Hmong and other mountain dwellers. Recruited by the C.I.A., Jones abandons the Gospel and trains the highlanders to kill for Freedom and Uncle Sam.
The author rejected the standard Disclosure Statement that states: “Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.” That’s because the fictional sweep of Hustle The East takes place against a backdrop of actual historical events. It’s no coincidence that readers learn more about the actual persons named Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Kissinger, Dr. Tom Dooley and a pair of American ambassadors who directed the bombing of Laos.

It is my duty to inform loyal followers of The Ugly American Book Club that the pseudonymous literary light Mark Tawen has passed into oblivion. The famed faux memoirist left this world joyfully surfing the Mekong River in the Golden Triangle where Laos meets Thailand and Myanmar. His ride ended when he collided with a boat speeding Chinese gamblers to Kings Romans Casino. Sail on, sail on, Sailor.

Da 5 Bloods, film by Spike Lee
Here at the Ugly American Book Club, we shine a light on the behavior – and often the utter ignorance – of Americans abroad with little experience or knowledge of Southeast Asia.
In “Da 5 Bloods,” Spike Lee’s latest cultural/ political/ historical eye-opener, we meet four Americans who know an awful lot about Vietnam because they were infantrymen in the American War, one of them for three tours of duty.
But now it’s 2020. The four ex-grunts are reuniting in Ho Chi Minh City for what could be a Buddy Movie with requisite scenes of family reunification or a Road Movie over backwater canals and jungle trails. But wait, this is Spike Lee. We’re not here to feel good about a Brother and Child reunion or a Return to Eden.
The 4 buddies – joined by a 5th who is not of their generation – are ostensibly reuniting for a “Rambo”-worthy rescue mission to retrieve the remains of their fallen comrade in arms. However their mission of mercy serves as a foil for what they’re really after – a cache of U.S. gold bars buried along with their buddy back in 1971.
The New York Times critic A.O Scott calls “Da 5 Bloods” a “long, anguished, funny, violent excursion into a hidden chamber of the nation’s heart of darkness.” Amen to that.
Like “Platoon” and “Apocalypse Now,” this 2 ½ hour long excursion focuses on the insanity that is war while touching on universal themes of greed and honor, commitment and loyalty, revenge and morality, citizenship and fatherhood, themes common to the American everyman.
I haven’t yet mentioned that the film is about African Americans. “Bloods” means blacks, although Spoiler Alert! we see a lot of red blood gushing out of people of all colors.
Lee mixes in news footage of war with violent scenes from anti-war protests and racial strife on the streets and college campuses of America. The images are thrown out willy-nilly as if all violence is the same. I fault Lee for introducing these landmark historical and cultural events out of context and without chronological order. If the artist meant to educate or inspire a new generation, he should have been a more caring historian.
After a slow-fuse start, the story explodes with love and hate, fear and loathing, humor and antipathy.
In the New Vietnam, the Americans encounter a number of sympathetic Vietnamese, among them an old flame played by the luminous singer Le Y Lan. She smiles at her ex-lover beautifully but with a fortune in gold at stake, can she be trusted?
There is race hatred as well. When one of the Bloods declines to buy a live chicken from a floating-market vendor, the Vietnamese man erupts with a stinging anti-American tirade that boils over into an ugly race-hatred rant. The few white characters (Europeans) in the story also express anti-American, anti-black and anti-Trump sentiment.
In flashbacks, we see the 4 Bloods fighting for their lives, mowing down Vietnamese with weapons of war, and watching as their fellow infantrymen are cut down by enemy fire. The Bloods listen to Hanoi Hannah, a Vietnamese broadcaster who spins records by Marvin Gaye and reminds “Negroes” they are giving their lives for a country that does not afford them basic civil rights at home.
The actor Delroy Lindo, who brilliantly plays the tormented Blood named Paul, has said the role gave him a chance to “Learn a lot of stuff I did not know.”
