Beyond Book Sales: My True Measure of Success

I know it sounds like a cliché to say “if I inspire one person it will all be worth it,” but for me it is true. When I wrote my books, it was never about money. It was about sharing a journey that might help someone else believe in themselves.

If just one person reads my story and feels that spark of courage to sign up for a race, go for a run, or simply believe they are capable of more, then every late night of writing and every ounce of energy has been worth it.

I know what it feels like to doubt yourself, to feel like you are too old, too far behind, or not good enough. Hearing that my story gave someone the push they needed means more than any royalty statement ever could.

So yes, I hope my book reaches more people. But even if it only touches a few lives, that still feels like a victory. Sometimes clichés exist because they are true, and this one is my truth. If my journey shows anything, it is that ordinary people can do extraordinary things—and maybe that next person is you.

Finding Your Why Before You Start Your Fitness Journey

When I first laced up my running shoes, it wasn’t because I loved exercise. Far from it. I was an unlikely athlete, starting out later in life, carrying extra weight, and feeling every ounce of self-doubt that comes with stepping outside your comfort zone. If you’ve ever felt like you weren’t cut out for the world of running, triathlon, or fitness in general, I understand exactly where you’re coming from.

But I also did it wrong. I waited for a health scare to force me into action. It was only then that I realised if I wanted to be around for my family and live the kind of life I dreamed of, I had to change. I had to start moving. Please do not wait until your body gives you a wake-up call. You do not need a crisis to begin. You can start right now. All you need to do is find your why.

My why was never about medals or times on a stopwatch. It was about legacy. I wanted to be a role model for my kids, to show Ross and Tasha that no matter how late you start, no matter how impossible it looks, you can still do extraordinary things. I wanted them to see me fighting, failing, getting back up, and finishing. Because in the end, the finish line is not just for you. It is for everyone who has been watching your journey.

That why carried me through long training runs in the dark, across finish lines where I was dead last, and even into races where I questioned whether I belonged. And every time I struggled, it reminded me that this isn’t just about me.

Here’s why having a why matters before you begin your own journey:

1. Your why keeps you moving when motivation fades

Motivation is like a spark. It burns bright but dies fast. Your why is the steady flame. When it’s raining, when you’re tired, when the scale will not budge, your why will remind you why you started.

2. Your why gives meaning to every finish line

Crossing a finish line is always emotional, but when your why is tied to something bigger than yourself such as your family, your health, or your community it transforms the moment into something unforgettable.

3. Your why protects you from doubt

I’ve lost count of the times I felt like an imposter. But every time I questioned myself, I remembered that my kids don’t care if I finish first or last. They care that I keep going. That knowledge silenced the voice of doubt.

4. Your why becomes part of your legacy

One day, long after we’ve hung up our running shoes, the people we love will remember how we lived. For me, it was important that my kids see that it’s never too late to change your story.

So if you’re thinking about starting your fitness journey, don’t begin with the shoes, the gym membership, or the gear. Start with your why. Write it down. Say it out loud. Let it become the compass that points you forward.

Because when the day comes that you shuffle across that finish line whether it’s a 5K, a marathon, or an Ironman you’ll know you’ve done something far greater than just completing a race. You’ll have shown yourself, and everyone who matters to you, what’s possible.

✨ Do not wait for a health scare to push you into action. Start today. Your why does not have to be perfect. It just has to be yours. And once you find it, hold on tight because it will carry you farther than you ever thought possible.
