My Top 7 Summer Reads on Living A Simpler Life with Less

If you’re like me, you always have a book in your hand because there’s always something new to learn.

As the “Downsizing Designer,” I think I have read and reread almost every book that’s been written on downsizing, decluttering, lifestyle design, minimalism and organizing.

This summer, I decided to select my top 7 books in this genre and decide how and why that specific message influenced me so that I could provide you with my favorite and most impactful summer reads on downsizing, decluttering, lifestyle design, minimalism, and organizing.

You may have heard of some of these books and authors, others you may have not, but these are my top 7 recommendations to read if you are seeking to live a simpler more abundant life with less.

Decluttering and Organizing

1. Decluttering at The Speed of Life: Winning Your Never-Ending Battle with Stuff by Dana White

Dana helps you understand why it’s difficult to let go of stuff by helping you identify key emotional challenges when decluttering. Her lighthearted and humorous approach also provides simple solutions that will help you end your battle with clutter for good.

2. The Gentle Art of Swedish Death, Cleaning: How to Free Yourself from A Lifetime of Clutter by Margaretta Magnusson

Margaretta shares her wisdom and humor to help us deal with an often difficult subject to discuss: putting our affairs in order before we pass so our kids won’t have to!

Her approach is radical and to the point, yet funny and moving while helping us learn how to get comfortable with letting go of our stuff.

3. Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo

Perhaps one of the most popular influencers who helped create the decluttering movement, Marie Kondo’s methods are simple and easy to implement, and as her book says, “life-changing.” Her approach is methodical, matter-of-fact, and effective.

4. What Your Clutter Is Trying to Tell You: Uncover the Message in The Mess and Reclaim Your Life by Kerri Richardson

Kerri’s book is a wake-up call for us to listen to the messages of our clutter, to face our fears, and to take steps to clear the physical and emotional clutter from our lives.

She provides tips on making changes to our mindset and habits that got us there in the first place while providing practical advice to prevent clutter in the future. Her approach is as much about decluttering and as it is about creating a new clutter-free lifestyle.

5. The Joy of Less: A Minimalist Guide to Decluttering and Organizing by Francine Jay

Francine’s message is inspiring, aspirational, and hopeful. She provides specific ideas and will help you realize it is possible to live a life you love with less.

Her approach is fun and light-hearted, reminding us of the joys and rewards that we will receive once we decide to declutter.

Minimalism and Lifestyle Design

6. The More of Less by Joshua Becker

Joshua has not only been one of my biggest influencers, but he is one of the top minimalist lifestyle advocates in the world. His story and his reason for choosing to become a minimalist is heartwarming and heartfelt.

His book teaches us how and why to get rid of what we want and don’t want and need so we can make room for what we do want and need, making room for a more meaningful and fulfilling life that aligns with our core values.

7. Let It Go: Downsize Your Way to A Richer, Happier Life by Peter Walsh

If you are preparing to sell your home, blend households or clear out your parents’ home after they’ve passed, this book is a practical how to guide to help you successfully maneuver and accomplish the daunting task. He provides positive and happy insights into the freedom you will experience after decluttering and downsizing.

Embracing the Freedom of an Uncluttered Calendar

In our fast-paced and demanding world, it’s not just our physical spaces that can become cluttered – our schedules and calendars can get overwhelmed too. The result? A life that feels scattered, stressed, and devoid of true fulfillment. But fear not, for the same principles that apply to decluttering our physical spaces can be just as transformative when applied to our time and schedules. So, let’s explore the inspiring journey of simplifying our calendars and embracing the abundance of an uncluttered life.

The Cluttered Time Trap: A Life Out of Balance

If you find yourself racing through each day with little time to spare, your calendar packed with endless obligations and commitments, then you may be trapped in a cluttered time cycle. The signs are clear – stress, anxiety, lack of focus, and the nagging feeling that life is passing you by without any true meaning. It’s time to pause, reevaluate, and discover the beauty of an uncluttered calendar.

The Uncluttered Calendar: Finding Purpose in Priorities

Much like decluttering our physical spaces, an uncluttered calendar involves identifying what truly matters and prioritizing those aspects of life. Imagine a calendar with breathing room, where you can focus on activities that align with your passions, values, and goals. It’s a calendar that resonates with your soul, allowing you to embrace each moment with intention and purpose.

Choosing Quality Over Quantity: The Power of Saying No

An uncluttered calendar is not just about fitting more in; it’s about being selective and mindful of what you allow in. Just as you let go of excess stuff in your home, decluttering your time means being brave enough to say no to activities and commitments that do not align with your vision for a simpler, less busy life. Remember, quality over quantity – it’s the key to unlocking a calendar that truly reflects your heart’s desires.

First Ask Yourself 3 QuestionsQuestion 1: Why do you let your calendar get so full in the first place?

Take a moment to reflect on why your calendar becomes packed to the brim. Is it a fear of missing out? A desire to please others at the expense of your own well-being? Understanding the root cause of the clutter is the first step towards making intentional choices that align with your true priorities.

Question 2: Why do you allow it to fill up week after week, month after month?

Asking this question allows you to identify recurring patterns in your scheduling habits. Perhaps it’s a habit of saying “yes” to every invitation or an underlying belief that productivity is measured by the number of tasks accomplished. Recognize these patterns, and challenge yourself to break free from the cycle of perpetual busyness.

Question 3: Why do you hold onto being so busy, having no white space on your calendar?

Delve deep into the reasons why you resist creating white space on your calendar. White space is not wasted time; it’s an essential opportunity to recharge, reflect, and nurture your well-being. Embrace the concept that simplicity and spaciousness in your schedule can lead to greater productivity, creativity, and overall happiness.

Apply Decluttering Principles to Your CalendarThe 15-Minute Rule for Decluttering Time

The timer method that works so well for physical decluttering can also be a game-changer for decluttering your calendar. Pick a time of day that works best for you, set a timer for 15 minutes, and dedicate that time to decluttering your schedule. Ask yourself the tough questions: Why do you allow your calendar to get so full? What is your end goal for a simpler life? The timer keeps you focused and motivated, making the process surprisingly fun.

Prioritize with Purpose: Listing the “Must-Do’s”

As you declutter your calendar, prioritize your daily tasks by distinguishing between the “must-do’s” and the “might-want-to-do’s.” Just as with physical decluttering, trying to fit everything in can leave you feeling overwhelmed and unfulfilled. Focus on the top three “must-do’s” for the day, allocating enough time to complete them. Anything beyond that is a bonus, bringing a sense of accomplishment and contentment.

Minimizing Time Sucks: Embrace White Space

Identify time-consuming distractions, such as excessive phone usage, endless emails, or TV binging. Declutter and minimize these distractions to make room for white space on your calendar. Embracing white space allows for rejuvenation, creativity, and the opportunity to focus on what truly matters.

Embracing the Uncluttered Life Across the Board

Decluttering your time doesn’t stop with your calendar. Apply the same principles to all areas of your life – health, finances, relationships, and career. You’ll discover that living with less across the board leads to a more abundant, happier, and more fulfilling life. Embrace the freedom of an uncluttered calendar, and you’ll find yourself with the time, energy, and attention to savor what matters most.

In conclusion, as we declutter our time and calendars, we learn to appreciate the beauty of a simpler, intentional life. Just as with our physical spaces, an uncluttered calendar allows room for growth, joy, and a profound sense of fulfillment. So, take that first step today, and embark on the journey of decluttering your time – an adventure that will bring you closer to the abundance of a truly happy life! Remember, a simple life is a happy life!

Do you wish you could learn decluttering tips or find a minimalist checklist to help you get started decluttering? Good news – you can learn how to get started decluttering, and you don’t have to do it on your own.

The Downsizing Designer Offers Minimalist Tips For Decluttering And More

Hi, it’s Rita, your Downsizing Designer. After discovering what a difference decluttering and downsizing made in my own life, I seek to share the positive effects of downsizing and decluttering with all of you. That’s why I’ve collected minimalist organization tips and other advice on how to declutter your home – so I can help you on your decluttering journey to a minimalist lifestyle!

What Do I Do When My Spouse Doesn’t Want To Declutter?

If you’re living with a spouse, your biggest hurdle may not be committing to decluttering and downsizing yourself. You may find you have difficulty getting your spouse on board with the idea of decluttering your shared home.

What can you do if your spouse doesn’t want to declutter? How can you address the topic without causing tension to grow between you and your partner? As the Downsizing Designer, I’ve helped my clients through these sorts of disagreements. I find that a useful tool to help my clients during this type of disagreement is to help them find common ground. Here are some simple guidelines to find common ground with your spouse while having a conversation about decluttering.

1. Acknowledge that there is conflict – you disagree about decluttering.

2. Schedule a time, date, and find a quiet place to meet and talk about it.

3. Each of you should offer a solution and then agree upon the chosen solution.

4. Keep that conversation going.

If you’d like to hear me go more in-depth into these steps, please watch “Help! I Want to Declutter, but My Spouse Doesn’t!” If you’re like more decluttering tips, such as minimalist checklists and minimalist ideas, please visit the Design Services online store. Introducing The Best Decluttering Starter Kit Ever: The 3-2-1 Method

We all know that decluttering can be overwhelming. With countless videos and blogs offering advice, it’s easy to get lost in a sea of information. That’s why I created this decluttering starter kit – a method that is not only easy but also delivers real results. When something is both simple and effective, we’re more likely to stick with it. That’s why this method is designed to become a lasting habit, helping you maintain a clutter-free home even when you feel short on time. Trust me, this new method truly works. Get ready to embrace a minimalist mindset and create a space that brings you joy and tranquility.

Introducing the 3-2-1 Decluttering Method, a simple yet powerful approach that will revolutionize your decluttering journey. This method is designed to make decluttering easy and to help you establish habits that will keep your home clutter-free in the long run. It’s time to say goodbye to the chaos and embrace a simpler, more intentional life.

Step 1: Set Yourself Up for Success

Start by identifying the area of your home that bothers you the most. Is it your overflowing closet, cluttered nightstand, or crowded cabinet? Choose an area that, once decluttered, will have a significant impact on your daily life and motivate you to keep going. This crucial first step sets the stage for your decluttering success.

Next, within that area, select a small subsection that you can tackle in just 30 minutes or less. By focusing on a manageable area, you’ll experience immediate progress and feel a sense of relief. Remember, small victories lead to big transformations.

Step 2: Sort Items into Three Piles

Once you’ve identified your target area, it’s time to dive in. Remove everything from the chosen space and sort the items into three distinct piles: Trash It!, Donate It!, and Keep It!

The Trash It! pile is for anything that is torn, badly soiled, expired, outgrown, mismatched, or unidentifiable. Be ruthless in your decision-making process. Immediately put these items in a large trash bag and dispose of it without hesitation. Clearing out the unnecessary creates space for what truly matters.

The Donate It! pile is for items that you don’t love, need, or use but may be valuable to someone else. If it doesn’t fit, look good on you, is out of style, or can be cleaned or repaired, it belongs in this pile. Place these items in a bag and make a commitment to donate them within 24 hours. Your generosity will not only benefit others but also create a positive ripple effect in your life.

Finally, the Keep It! pile is for the items that you genuinely want, need, and will use. After going through the elimination process, you’ll be left with only the possessions that bring value and joy into your life. Embrace the freedom of simplicity as you curate your personal space with intention.

Step 3: Embrace the Process of Elimination

The 3-2-1 method follows the principle of elimination. It’s often easier to determine what we don’t want rather than what we do. By focusing on decluttering through the lens of removal, you’ll effortlessly create a space filled only with the things you love.

But wait, there’s more! Here are some bonus decluttering tips to help you along your minimalist journey:

Declutter in the moment: Implement a “clean as you go” approach to prevent clutter from piling up. Make your bed, hang up your clothes, pick up after yourself, wipe down surfaces, and fill up empty spaces. These small habits will have a significant impact on keeping clutter at bay.Prioritize decluttering each day: Dedicate 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening to decluttering. This simple practice will yield remarkable results and prevent clutter from spiraling out of control. Consistency is key!If you’re not using it, let it go: Recognize that anything you’re not actively using is taking up valuable space, both physically and mentally. Be honest with yourself and part ways with items that no longer serve a purpose in your life. You’ll create room for new possibilities.

So there you have it, the best decluttering starter kit ever: the 3-2-1 Decluttering Method. It’s time to reclaim your space, simplify your life, and embrace minimalism. Remember, decluttering is not just about tidying up; it’s about creating an environment that nurtures your well-being and brings you peace. Start small, be consistent, and celebrate every step toward a clutter-free and simpler life.

I’d like to help you do the same by sharing the minimalist tips I’ve learned.

I’ve found that when people are thinking about downsizing, three common mistakes are often made – particularly by those wanting to downsize in preparation for retirement. The minimalist tip I’m offering for you to consider today is to avoid these 3 mistakes when downsizing and decluttering.

Playing the Waiting Game – Don’t procrastinate or wait too late. Allow yourself to take the first step. Rushing the Process of Downsizing – Don’t force yourself to make important decisions under pressure. Not Downsizing Enough – If you don’t downsize enough, you may end up “double downsizing.”

If you’d like to learn more about how you can avoid these downsizing mistakes, I go into more detail in the following video: “Downsizing in Your 60s: Avoiding 3 Costly Mistakes.” Want to learn more about decluttering? 10 Step Plan to Conquer Clutter

Clutter is a Billion Dollar Industry

In a cluttered world filled with excess possessions, it’s time to confront the clutter crisis head-on. Did you know that the average American home contains over 300,000 items? Moreover, 11% of Americans resort to storage units, contributing to a $38 billion industry. These staggering statistics indicate the pressing need to declutter and embrace minimalism. I’m Rita Wilkins, the downsizing designer, in this blog post we will provide you with a 10-step plan to reclaim your space and transform your life.

10 Steps to Solve Your Clutter CrisesRecognize the Impact of Clutter: The first step towards decluttering is acknowledging the impact it has on your life. Understand that clutter not only occupies physical space but also affects your health, wealth, and relationships. It robs you of time, drains your energy, and hampers your focus. By letting go of clutter, you can regain control over your life.Envision Your Clutter-Free Life: Create a vision of how your life will look and feel once your home is decluttered. Visualize walking into a peaceful, serene environment that promotes tranquility and relaxation. This vision will serve as a powerful motivator throughout your decluttering journey.Cultivate the Willingness to Change: Commitment and willingness are essential to overcome clutter. Merely wanting to declutter without taking action will only perpetuate the cycle of accumulation. Challenge the temptation to buy more items impulsively and develop a mindful approach to purchasing. Ask yourself why you are buying something and if it aligns with your vision of a clutter-free life.Develop a Decluttering Plan: Without a plan, decluttering can be an overwhelming task. Break it down into manageable steps by going room by room or category by category. Choose a decluttering method that resonates with you, such as the Burst Method or the KonMari Method. Additionally, decide where you will donate or dispose of the items you no longer need.Seek Support: Decluttering your entire home can be a challenging endeavor. Reach out to family, friends, or even professionals who can provide unbiased assistance. Their support will make the process easier and more enjoyable. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help when needed.Regular Decluttering Sessions: Schedule regular decluttering sessions to stay on top of your possessions. Set aside at least one session per week, even if it’s just a few minutes, to tackle a specific area or a small task. Consistency is key to maintaining a clutter-free environment.Avoid Deferred Decisions: Clutter often accumulates because of deferred decisions. Take a moment to consciously make decisions about where items belong. Avoid leaving clothes on the floor or putting them on a chair. By promptly putting things away or addressing them, you prevent clutter buildup.Strengthen Your Letting Go Muscle: Decluttering requires letting go of items that no longer serve a purpose. Just like going to the gym to build physical strength, regularly practicing decluttering helps strengthen your “letting go muscle.” Sell, donate, repurpose, or dispose of items that you no longer need, want, or use.Embrace Fun and Therapeutic Decluttering: Decluttering doesn’t have to be a chore; it can be enjoyable and therapeutic. Approach it as a game, laugh at yourself, and wonder why you kept certain items in the first place. Use this opportunity to reflect on both positive and negative memories associated with your belongings. Have fun throughout the process.Embrace Resilience and Patience: Decluttering is a journey that requires resilience and patience. It won’t happen overnight, considering the years it took to accumulate clutter. During moments of doubt or feeling stuck, revisit your reasons for wanting to declutter. Remember the chaos and stress you aim to eliminate. Be kind to yourself and stay committed to the process.Reclaim Control of Your Life

Embarking on a decluttering and minimalism journey is a powerful step towards reclaiming control over your life. By following these ten steps, you can overcome the clutter crisis, alleviate stress, and create a serene environment that fosters peace and productivity. Embrace the challenge with determination, resilience, and the belief that a clutter-free life is a journey worth embarking upon. Wishing you success and a brighter future!

Decluttering Tips: What To Do With A Loved One’s Belongings

How To Declutter And Stay Clutter-Free

Whether you’re looking to get started decluttering or are looking for tips on how to remain clutter-free, it’s important to remember you don’t have to go through your decluttering journey alone. If you’re struggling with decluttering and long for a more minimalist style in your home, you’re in the right place to find the help you need.

Minimalist Tips From The Downsizing Designer

Hi, everyone, it’s Rita again. As you know, after downsizing and decluttering my own life, I became known as the Downsizing Designer. It’s my goal to help you achieve your minimalist goals through minimalist tips about how to declutter and downsize. There are many stages in life where one might want to declutter – or else avoid taking on more clutter in an effort to maintain a more minimalistic style. I’m here to help you get started decluttering and stay clutter-free.

Minimalism And Decluttering: How To Honor A Loved One’s Memory When They’re Gone

As your downsizing designer, I hear many questions related to downsizing and decluttering. One of the questions I often hear is this:

What should I do with a loved one’s belongings after they’ve passed away?

Losing a loved one is a profound and devastating experience. The process of grieving can be made more difficult if you’re tasked with sorting through the belongings of the person you lost. However, this can also be an opportunity for reflection and healing. It can allow you to preserve their memory and the things that mean something to you. You can also honor your loved one’s memory without becoming overwhelmed by clutter in your own home.

Want to learn tips on how to decide what to do with your loved one’s belongings after death? Please watch my video “Honor Your Loved One’s Memory and Belongings After They’re Gone” to learn more.

Embracing Minimalism: 5 Tips for a Simpler and More Fulfilling Life

Do you ever catch yourself yearning for the days when life seemed simpler and less chaotic? When you weren’t constantly pulled in a million different directions, and you had the luxury of truly savoring each moment? I know the feeling all too well. It was only when I decided to downsize and declutter that I discovered the profound impact of living a simpler, less distracted life.

Minimalism is an Art

In our fast-paced world, where everything demands immediate attention and our to-do lists leave us feeling overwhelmed and unfulfilled, it’s essential to reassess and redefine what truly matters to us. Minimalism is not just about living with fewer possessions; it’s an art that teaches us to find happiness and contentment with less.

What Truly Matters

When you take the time to declutter and pare down your belongings to only what truly matters, life becomes refreshingly simple. By eliminating the excess that distracts you from a more meaningful and abundant life, you create space for what brings you joy, freedom, and flexibility. Suddenly, you find yourself in the driver’s seat of your own life, no longer controlled by the demands and expectations of others or society.

5 Tips to Embrace Minimalism for a Simpler Life

Living a simpler life is, in reality, quite simple. Allow me to share my top five tips for embracing a minimalist lifestyle right now:

Determine What Matters Most

Begin by taking the time to identify what truly matters to you and what you want more of in your life. This clarity will make it easier for you to discern what you want less of. Focus on your values, aspirations, and what brings you the most fulfillment. When you know what matters most, it becomes effortless to let go of what doesn’t align with your vision.

Edit and Declutter

Embrace the transformative power of decluttering. This includes letting go of physical and mental clutter, toxic relationships, negative mindsets, and poor mental habits. As you start releasing these unnecessary burdens, you create more room for the life you genuinely desire.

Say “No” More Often

Creating boundaries is crucial in simplifying your life. Learn to say “no” to buying more and spending less. Say “no” to over-scheduling yourself and multitasking, which often leads to burnout. And most importantly, say “no” to the naysayers and those who don’t support your journey. By setting these boundaries, you protect your time, energy, and focus for what truly matters.

Say “Yes” to What Matters

Saying “yes” is just as important as saying “no.” Prioritize your time and energy for the people and activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Spend time with those who uplift and inspire you. Say “yes” to the things that align with your values and contribute to a life filled with purpose.

Slow Down and Cultivate Gratitude

Take a step back from the hustle and bustle of life. Slow down and reflect on what you do and don’t want. Continuously edit out things that no longer align with your values and those that hinder your journey toward a simpler, more peaceful existence. Cultivate gratitude by appreciating the present moment and practicing self-care. Remember, self-care is not selfish—it’s essential for your overall well-being.

A Simpler Life will be Second Nature

As you integrate these five minimalist lifestyle tips into your daily routine, they will become second nature. Your life will become simpler, richer, and more freeing. You’ll experience a newfound sense of freedom, happiness, and joy. Embrace the beauty of minimalism, and allow it to transform your life into a remarkable journey toward a more meaningful and fulfilling existence. Embrace simplicity, and discover the extraordinary joy it brings!
