The Talking to my friends about Books Podcast: Rob Jelly
I’m really enjoying arranging chats with my friends about the books they are reading. And I’m also enjoying listening back to them. I now have a long list of new novels to discover which is growing and growing.
In this episode of The Talking to my Friends about Books Podcast I talk to BBC Essex presenter, Rob Jelly, who can be heard every Monday to Thursday on Your Essex between 6pm and 10pm.
He has discovered the joy of books by setting himself a challenge for 2021.
I asked him what made him decide to read one book every month.

About Rob Jelly
Here is my blurb…Hi. I’m Rob. I’m a tall child.I used to want to work in Anatomy & Physiology. Then I discovered I could get paid to talk, so I decided radio was an easier idea… I was wrong.Things I enjoy: early mornings, flat-white coffee, sax solos in songs, Canada, Pixar films, the colour orange, Rolos and the board game Battleships among many other things.Stuff I don’t understand: wasps, trousers, how boats float, the colour grey and why chocolate coffee tastes great but coffee chocolates not so much and horror films among many other things.“Every day is a school day” is a motto I live by which is why I’m always found to be trying something new – for example, last year I bought a unicycle, a beard-grooming kit and an arcade machine. What does any of this have to do with being on a podcast about books?? It’s all led me to finally trying to find my love for reading (spoiler alert: I think I’ve finally found it). Also, I would like to make it known that the word “blurb” is largely underrated and should be used more often. Thanks. The post The Talking to my friends about Books Podcast: Rob Jelly appeared first on Chris Penhall.

Shh… It’s Our Secret, by Lizzie Chantree
I’m delighted to welcome international best selling author, Lizzie Chantree onto my blog today to celebrate the publication of her new book on May 6th 2021
Over to you Lizzie!
Shh… It’s Our Secret, by Lizzie Chantree
Thank you for inviting me onto your blog today and for the wonderful support of the launch of my latest book.
My main character, Violet, struggles with self-belief and feels and unappreciated by the sister who raised her and by her closest friends. Working in a rundown café bar, Violet is at the heart of the community and wants to find a way to make the bar become profitable and bring new customers into the town.
Violet always saves the last piece of cake for two zany pensions to share, as they come to the café bar to stay warm. She feels like they are her surrogates family and dreams about helping them all to relieve their daily struggles financially. To do this Violet has to tackle her own inner critic and foster new confidence, which means sharing her long held secret with the world and stepping into the limelight. This is a story of putting fears aside and being brave enough to reach for your dreams, even when they seem so far away that touching them feels impossible.
About the book
Violet has a secret that could change the lives of everyone she knows and loves, especially the regulars at the run-down café bar where she works. After losing her parents at a young age, they are the closest thing she has to a family and she feels responsible for them.
Kai is a jaded music producer who has just moved outside of town. Seeking solitude from the stress of his job, he’s looking for seclusion. The only problem is he can’t seem to escape the band members and songwriters who keep showing up at his house.
When Kai wanders into the bar and Violet’s life, he accidentally discovers her closely guarded secret. Can Kai help her rediscover her self-confidence or should some secrets remain undiscovered?

The Talking to my Friends about Books Podcast: Helen Bridgett on Where the Crawdads Sing
I’m really enjoying my zoom chats with my friends about books, and this time I got to talk to Helen Bridgett, author of Summer at Serenity Bay and One By One about one of her favourite books, which, it turns out, is one of my favourites too – Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Helen Bridgett
Having failed miserably with every New Year’s resolution that involved diets, one year, Helen Bridgett set herself a completely different goal – to write a novel and give it as a Christmas present. Having written one, she couldn’t stop!
2021 saw the publication of Helen’s debut crime novel featuring Professor Maxie Reddick. One by One was published in January by Ruby Fiction. Outside of writing, Helen loves being outdoors walking with the dog and enjoying a glass of wine and banter with friends.
