Absolutely True Confession…The Joys of Marketing (Failures)

Take a look at this bookmark, front and back: Beautiful isn't it? Now quick, what did I do wrong? Yup, that's right.  Nowhere on this bookmark is any of the most relevant information that it should convey, i. e. the title of my book and my name.  This bookmark is all about seduction, intrigue.  It [...]

Absolutely True…DBF

This will be brief, because I am exhausted. Today was the reading.  Before that though, I went around to several booths, spoke with local bookstore owners and organizations and left some information with them.  Then, I got my street team to help me hand out bookmarks (more on that in a later blog), and raffle [...]

Absolutely True…

So, for some reason, my attempts to give away two copies of my book were a complete flop.  The giveaways I devised were relatively uncomplicated.  All that they required were for people to retweet a post or to post their name in a facebook thread.  I got nothing.  Not one entry.  My thought is that [...]

Absolutely True Confessions…: Book Festivals

As a writer, I wrote from my own amusement. Sometimes I shared with others, sometimes I just kept my work all to myself, and it did not matter if no one else ever read it. As an author though, self-promotion is the name of the game. And that has been a real challenge for me, because I am really a "let the work speak for itself" kind of girl. Thing is, the work can speak all it wants, but that's worthless if no one is listening.

Under the Wire…

Just in time, I am posting a seventh blog for this month; thus beating my record for blogs for a month.  But this is not a real blog, it is kind of cheating because it's just to set up what I am going to try to do for the next month. For the next month, [...]

Fall is in the Air…

And I love it!  Ok, so maybe that is a little wishful thinking, but the mornings are definitely getting cooler–and a writer can dream, can't she?Fall is absolutely my most favorite season.  Yes,"most favorite", I love it that much.  I love the fall holidays–especially Halloween (because who doesn't like free candy?), and I love the [...]

Video Blogs…etc…etc….

This will be quick, because I have been writing over here quite frequently lately.  I am almost tired of myself. I was talking to a friend the other day, asking him if he had read my most recent blog.  Now this friend is a self-proclaimed "not-a-reader", so his answer, of course, was no.  Then he [...]

Black People Love Fantasy Too…Don't They? (Warning: This is a bit of a rant.)

I know that I can't be the only black kid that grew up loving "The Wizard of Oz."  I know that because I have siblings who were right there alongside me, huddled on the floor of the den, watching the movie deep into the night–with a bowl of the special popcorn my mom made–and singing [...]

Summer Reading Challenge

Diversity In YA is hosting a Summer Reading Challenge.

The goal is to read a book featuring a protagonist from an underrepresented population and then blog about it.  The deadline for entry is Sept 1. The prizes are great (lots and lots of books), especially for all of you that teach middle grades. What a way to expand your library!  And, of course, if you are reading my book, it qualifies.  :)

Find out more about the contest at here at DiversityinYA.

Good luck!
