On one hand, I'm glad that you live in a world where this sort of perspective seems reasonable.

On one hand, I'm glad that you live in a world where this sort of perspective seems reasonable. That's good.

But I don't think this outlook reflects reality for a lot of people right now. Things aren't so great right now. Don't underestimate the impact uncontrolled COVID-19 has had on our economy.

Unless you've had a full battery of medical testing, including A1C and LDL-P, it's not clear that you'll know whether you're in a high-risk category. This isn't a flu—it's an endothelial sarbecovirus. It causes damage to the lining of blood vessels. It can maim you; that's an apt word choice.

Not wearing masks around others is reckless and destructive. I live in an affluent part of So Cal, and I see it every day too. It's puzzling.

Part of me wants to believe that it's just ignorance, but I think there's an element of cognitive dissonance reduction in it too. People don't want to believe that their choice for president could be so disastrously incompetent about something so serious. It's far easier to believe the disease isn't so bad. We abandon scout mindset and fight for our tribal viewpoints.

I've had a chronic illness for several years, so I take my health seriously—I have to. These people have the privilege of never having had to deal with their physical bodies rebelling against them. That will change, unfortunately.

These are valid concerns, and people should be aware of the possibilities given some of the President’s latest language.

That being said, that is all they are for now — possibilities, and remote ones at that. They should not discourage voting or otherwise serve as a basis for nihilism.

It will be very hard for Mr. Trump to retain the presidency if there is no path to victory in the electoral college: if there is a “landslide” win for Mr. Biden.

Vote.

Vote early. Convince your friends to vote.
