Review: Rules of Attraction

My rating: 0 of 5 stars
Slow Burn
Started of as a slow burn story, Rules of attraction was a bit slow in pace until 40% kf the story. But once the leads started putting out their feelings for each other, the story picked up the pace. I loved how the love between Harika and Viren grew organically and how the carried forward their relationship. Starting as acquaintance, finding out to be kids from two estranged families, planning to bring their families together and love was beautifully scripted. As always the short break up and patch up in the climax portion was there for which I cried for Harika. I wished she made him wait for another day before forgiving him but everything is fair in love and war. A wonderful read, giving it a four star.

“Okay, I lied, alright? Yes. I’m a single girl on this lovey dovey cruise because my wingman of a friend back home fell in love with some girl and thought it uncouth to come away with me for a week. I mean, can you even imagine the nerve of him?” I scoff trying to play off the fact I’m a single loser on a love cruise. Hottie McBlue-eyes shakes his head as if I’m telling the most unbelievable tale. “What kind of asshole is a wingman for his female friend and falls in love with another girl instead of the one right in front of him?” Maybe it’s the Corona, but I immediately feel my cheeks blush. “Okay, first of all, I’m going to take that as a compliment, so thank you very much. And secondly, ew no. Joaquin and I have only ever been just friends. Honestly, I thought he was gay for years, but turns out he’s not.” I shrug. “I’m just sooo not his type which is totally fine. I’m happy he’s happy…even if that puts me here alone…and in need of a good lie to tell my friends.” “Oh, so you’re not really here alone. You have your friends.” “Well yes and no. My old sorority sisters planned this couples’ trip. So, they’re all bringing their significant others. I just uhh…I haven’t told them that my significant other bailed.” “Meh, it won’t be so bad. Maybe you’ll find some hot guy aboard to pal around with. “ A snort escapes me. “Yeah. Maybe I’ll meet and fall in love with some hot doctor and live happily ever after, right? I mean stranger things have happened in this crazy world, right?” Hottie McBlue-eyes chokes on his sip and coughs a few times. “Stranger things have definitely happened, I’m sure.” I offer my hand to my airport friend. “I’m Adrienne, by the way. I don’t think I ever told you that, and while referring to me as Dildo Girl is pretty damn funny, I figured after holding my pink sparkly dick in your hands, you deserve to know my name.” Laughing he takes his hand in mine. “Pleasure to meet you, Adrienne. That’s a beautiful name by the way. I’m Aris McElfry.” “Nice to meet you Aris. I didn’t see you on the plane with anyone either. Are you telling me you’re also here alone?” “Well, as a matter of fact—” “Shit. It can’t be.” What is he doing here? “What?” Aris watches me, alarmed by my outburst. I plaster a neutral smile on my face and murmur through my teeth. “Shit. Shit. Shit.” Are they seriously together? My heart beats faster inside my chest and there’s a sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach. “What? What’s wrong?” I slowly turn toward Aris and give him the biggest puppy dog eyes I can muster while speaking as softly and quickly as I can. “Look, I know you don’t really know me, and I don’t know you, but you were kind enough to hold my sparkly dick in your hands and that has to say something for the kind of man that you are, right? So, if you would be willing to do me one more hella-huge favor I would be in your debt for like…my whole life…or this whole cruise…whichever comes first and right now my whole life could come first and anyway I promise to leave you alone after this and—” “Anything.” He interrupts, holding my gaze. “Name it.” I gulp down my fear and my pride and swiftly blurt out my request with a shaky voice. “I need a boyfriend. Like, right here. Right now. Because the man walking toward us in the yellow shirt is my ex and I had no idea he was going to be here, now I’m horrified I might have to spend this entire trip with him gloating that I’m here alone and he’s obviously not. And to add fuel to that already burning inferno, the girl with him is one of my friends and I had no idea the two of them were a thing and now if I have to tell him I’m alone, I may as well walk off this fucking ship right n—” Before I can finish my sentence, Aris’s arm slides around my waist and he pulls me into his chest. Hooooly God, he smells good. “Stop talking,” he whispers against my mouth. “I get it.” The energy swiftly changes between us and oh, my God it’s hard to breathe. “I’m going to kiss you, alright? Like, really fucking kiss you so that douche sees that you belong to someone else now. Smile at me and tell me quick, is that okay?”

I am reinventing myself. I’m a ME not a WE. Since I’m no longer Asshole’s fiancée, I can be anything I want to be. I could be a recovering circus performer who left the big top for big adventure. I could be a rich German heiress just waiting on wire transfers—oh wait, that’s already been done. I could definitely be carefree and happy and not have people look at me like I’m going to crack. I can find myself again. I can be single and happy and unattached. As we pass a group of oglers, I smile brightly and toss my hair. Instead of looking cool and collected, I am momentarily blinded by the sun and miss the small step to the ramp, pitching me forward into the crowd. “Shit, Abby. You okay?” Jazz asks, trying, and failing, to grab my elbow. Luckily, my fall is broken by the person in front of us. Unluckily, my nose ends up embedded in his ass crack. I grab his thighs to keep myself from sliding down his backside. He clenches his muscles in surprise, but that only makes my face smoosh harder into his ass. I’m sucking in his khaki shorts instead of air, but if I let go, I will faceplant onto the gangway. I hold on until I can get my feet under me and pray I don’t pass out from lack of oxygen. Imagine the headline: “Jilted Woman Suffocates in Man’s Ass on Love Cruise.” Jazz grabs my arms and helps me stand. I suck in khaki-free air. “At least buy the man dinner first,” she quips. The man glances over his shoulder with a frown. I give him a sheepish smile and a finger wave. “Crowds, am I right?” He nods, lips twitching, and turns back around, putting his earbud back in his ear. The gesture and the way his dark hair falls over his forehead slams me with deja vu, but I can’t think of why. I shake off the feeling. I’m just too mired in memories today. I can’t help but glance at his backside now that I’m at a distance to examine it. It looks damn good in the shorts he’s wearing. If I had to face plant into a butt today, I’m glad it was a nice one. “Well, that’s one way to make an impression,” Jazz says, suppressing a laugh as we follow the slowly moving crowd up the ramp to board the ship. “I didn’t peg you for being into ass play. I guess what they say about school teachers is true.” I roll my eyes at her. “Go on. Get it all out of your system so we never have to mention this again. Like ever.” I groan. “I’m so not good at this flirting thing. I’ll be your wingman and live vicariously through your overly friendly vagina. Just put a sock on the door if you don’t want me walking in.” “Next please?” the woman at the check-in booth says with a forced smile. Her cheeks must hurt by the end of the day. “Sorry,” I say, handing over my passport to her. Jazz does the same. “Welcome aboard, Abigail Winters and Jasmine Bucolo. You will be in Sea Terrace 13090A.” I'm looking at my room key when a deep male voice startles me. “Excuse me.” I jump a little and turn to see the man I bumped into earlier. My face heats to match the red carpet of the entrance way. “I’m so sorry for earlier. I don’t normally grope strangers. I tripped and—” “It was an accident. That isn’t why I stopped you. I—uh—this is weird, but did I hear your name is Abby Winters?” I tilt my head at him, the fog of embarrassment lifting. And holy shit. “Grayson Hamilton?” A broad smile lights up his face, smoothing out the strong angles, and my memories start clicking into place. Grayson and my brother, Alex, dominating the soccer field in high school. Grayson and the rest of Alex’s annoying friends teasing me to no end. Grayson’s adorable, crooked smile. Grayson dominating my fevered teenaged dreams. He holds out his hand. “Little Breezy Winters. Of all the cruise ships in all the world, you had to board this one.” I laugh a little too loudly and take his hand. “God, no one’s called me Breezy in years. How are you, Gray?” Besides really freaking hot. His handsome features—that I used to discretely study more than my homework…but in a not-at-all creepy way—have filled out into strong manly angles. Small lines form around his mouth and deep brown eyes when he smiles. In short, he has aged very, very yummily. No, I scold myself. I am most definitively on a break from men.

The red lighting in the hallway of the cruise ship gives it an eerie glow instead of the romantic vibe I’m sure they were hoping for. I keep waiting for a man in a mask to come jumping out like an old 90’s thriller as we head towards our suite. “This place is unreal,” I grumble. “Isn’t it amazing!” Evelyn, my younger sister, says enthusiastically. Her blonde hair flies around her as she whips her head around taking everything in. Her blue eyes wide at every small detail. “Oh my god Colin, they have disco elevators!” She quickly pushes the up button and does a little dance in place as she waves to other random guests. Crossing my arms I lean against the wall taking it all in. “I wouldn’t say it’s amazing. It’s more like an expensive petri dish floating on water.” I watch as someone sneezes then touches the door handle into a room. Disgusting. She slaps me on the arm, “Oh stop. Can you not be your brooding self for once?” The elevator doors open and she rushes inside staring at the ceiling and at the blue bubbles lighting the walls. “Look at this place. We are going to have so much fun!” She pushes the button for deck 15. “Hmm,” I grunt. Refusing to even see the fun side of this trip. The only reason I agreed to come along was because her boyfriend broke up with her leaving her with an extra non-refundable ticket. Of course though, she was sneaky enough to not tell me it was a love cruise. Why the hell she would want to bring me is beyond me. “There’s no way in hell I’m going to be okay with watching you flirt and bring guys back to our suite this entire trip.” I narrow my gaze at her. She blows out a sigh while rolling her eyes. “Come on Colin, for once stop being the protective older brother and just let loose. Besides, maybe you’ll meet someone special here too.” She grins while rubbing her shoulder conspiratorially against mine. “Doubtful,” I say as I exit the elevator onto deck 15. I look for our cabin 15331Z, the rooms here are larger than the below decks. I see the Fab Suite listed on the door and raise an eyebrow at her. She waves me away. “Don’t give me that look. I have money, even if I only work at a craft store. I do save my money.” She holds her card up to the electronic key reader and the door unlocks. “Besides I didn’t expect to be ditched by he who I will not name before this trip. So I wasn’t going to waste a few grand on this excursion over some hurt feelings.” She ushers me inside. The room is gigantic. We enter through a hallway with a closet on the side for our clothes then a bathroom on the right. The entryway opens up into a large sitting room area with a television, gaming console, a guitar on the side, and a mini bar. “Damn, this had to set you back a bit of money.” I grab my phone out of my pocket and open my venmo. With a quick punch of my fingers I send her a chunk of money that should cover my portion of the room. Her phone dings and her eyes narrow. “Colin Brayden Turner you better not have done what I think you just did.” I slide my phone back into my dress slacks and walk into the bedroom ignoring her soft curses from behind me. She’ll complain, but she’ll accept it. The room is spacious, but I only see one large bed in the room. “So where exactly am I sleeping because this is not going to work for us.” She grabs her suitcase and plops it onto the bed. “My dear brother, you get the couch.” She smirks as she flops onto the queen bed and stretches. I glance back at the smaller looking modular couch and accept the fact that my six foot frame will not fit well on it. Maybe I should have just booked a separate room. Her laughter causes me to glance her way. “You should see your face right now.” She shakes her head while hopping off the bed. “Don’t worry big bro, the couch turns into another queen bed. The sectionals push together.” Thank fuck. I grab my bags and drop them in the closet and start hanging up my clothes. “What’s on the agenda for tonight? I’m sure you have something planned that I just can’t wait to hear about.” Sarcasm drips from my voice. She cackles again, “Oh, you have no idea."

The instant I open the door and see the figure bent over the hood of his car, my heart stops. I haven't seen Kacey Reid since prom night when he drove Kelsey and me home after our disastrous dates ditched us at the after-party. I secretly fell in love with him that night, basking in the way the rage washed over him when Kelsey explained what happened, loving the way his eyes softened when he met my eyes and gave me his jacket when I was cold. I tried to forget him, even moving to the other side of the continent, but nothing worked. I was still in love with my best friend’s twin brother. “Well look who decided to finally come back home after all these years,” Kacey teases, that knowing smirk playing at the edges of his lips as his blue eyes latch onto mine. I take a breath, wondering how one man can change so much and yet so little in three years. His once shaggy blond hair is cut short, tendrils falling strategically in front of his face, making him look older than his twenty-one years. His crystal-clear blue eyes still cause my insides to flip every time they’re trained on me and those tattoos…they’re new. Both arms are covered and from the little I can see of his chest through his white t-shirt, that’s covered too. “I've been home, you’re just never here,” I quip, loving the way his eyes shine with humor as they meet mine. “Touché,” he says before grabbing the rag from his back pocket and wiping the grease from his hands. I wonder what those hands would feel like against me, how the calluses on those fingertips would feel gripping me tightly as I…I shake my head, silently berating myself for going there when I know I can't. “I didn't know you were home?” My voice cracks as I make my way to the fridge on the other side of the car. Kacey’s eyes follow my every move. There was a time when I would have begged him to look at me the way he is right now, but I have to keep my distance because from what Kelsey has told me, he will ruin me. “I’m not. My new place doesn't have a garage to store this baby,” he says, shutting the hood. “I keep it here and Mom and Dad let me come over and work on it.” I nod, turning so my back is against the fridge, and our eyes connect. “Are you sure it's not just a ploy to get you to come home more?” I say, his eyes widening as if the thought never crossed his mind. “Well shit,” he mutters, a small laugh leaving his throat as I smile, turning back around to get the beers out of the fridge. The second my back is turned and the door is open, I sense him behind me. “Kacey, what are you doing?” I whisper just as his fingers grip my waist, hauling me back until I can feel all of him. Every hard inch. My breath shudders as those deft fingers trace over my hip and rest just over the waistband of my bikini bottoms. “Do you know how many times I’ve told myself to stay away from you?” he mutters against my neck, the stubble on his jaw causing delicious friction against my skin. “Do you know how many times I’ve had to remind myself that you're my sister’s best friend?” I shake my head, my fingers gripping his wrist as the tips of his fingers drop just below my bikini, causing every breath to leave my lungs. “Kacey we can't do this,” I whisper, closing my eyes and wishing we could, wishing I could feel what his lust feels like against me, what his passion would feel like inside me. “I know,” he growls against the shell of my ear, nipping at the lobe until I’m putty in his hands. “But that doesn't mean I can walk away without a taste…”

“Please, I need you, Zoey,” Anna says again. “I wouldn’t ask if this wasn’t completely urgent.” “Anna, you ask me literally every time you need anything.” I cross my arms, trying hard not to smile as my sister gives me her sweetest of puppy looks. “You love helping me.” She pats my hair. You would never guess she’s the older sister here. But she’s not wrong. She’s my universe. I am here for everything she needs, no questions asked. I learned my lesson back when we were young. The one time it mattered, I wasn’t there for her, and it shattered everything. I’ll never make that mistake again. “What if I help you back home in LA? We could figure out what Mike is up to together. Girl power. Sisterhood of the traveling penis. All that.” “Zo, the cruise is where I need the help,” Anna says. “You can easily pass as me in photos that aren’t close-ups. Keeping my Instagram full of cruise shots is the perfect distraction for Mike while I follow him around LA.” “I’ll help you however I can, but I would be most useful on land.” “I know you hate even the thought of a cruise. But think of it this way. It’ll be much better than lying around watching TV in your tiny apartment back in LA while you rest your ankle. I’m pretty sure you had no other plans next week.” “There’s plenty to do in LA, even with a sprained ankle.” “You’re supposed to be resting, not running all over. At least on a cruise you can lounge at the pool, have all your meals taken care of, and beach it up in each port of call.” I let out a long sigh. I hate that she’s right. Being marginally injured is the most boring possible status to have. I can sort of do everything, but I’m not supposed to do anything. It’s killing me. But if I still can’t run, jump, or climb at high speed after the break in filming for our big Meghan Marconi action thriller? That would be worse. That would jeopardize my entire career as a stunt double. “I… but…” There has to be a reason I shouldn’t go on the cruise. I mean, I’ve summited Mount Kilimanjaro, sky-dived Interlaken, scaled El Capitan with my bare hands, and flipped a car off the London Bridge. Can you imagine me sitting around eating buffet with a bunch of retirees? “I was going to do a lot of upper body training at that new gym near the studio next week.” “So were you planning to seduce a certain someone who’s been talking up his membership there?” Anna purses her lips. “No.” I glare at her. “I’m not into Grant. I mean, whoever you’re talking about.” “Why don’t you invite him to come on the cruise?” Anna cocks her head, one eyebrow raised. “It’s easy enough to transfer a cruise ticket to someone else. I can give him Mike’s. A free trip with my gorgeous sister? Come on, he’d go.” I could laugh. Anna knows I’m incapable of inviting a man to coffee, let alone a cruise. And a seduction at sea, by me? “I am not inviting Grant Kevlar! We only met a month ago, in this very trailer. He would never go on a Caribbean Cruise with me, even if it’s free.” “Who says I wouldn’t go on a free Caribbean Cruise with my new BFF?” Jamie Von Burger, my favorite hair stylist of all time- who I also met a month ago in this trailer- blows in the door, wet as a sewer rat. Jamie drops his umbrella, and water sprays the room. “I’m dying to get out of this Louisiana swamp. Please tell me you weren’t making up the idea of a jaunt to the Caribbean. I want to drink Piña Coladas in the sun with you, babes.” Jamie air-kisses my cheek and his beard tickles my skin, while his long flowing locks cascade forward in a silken waterfall. “We’re a dream team. Think of the boys we could slay.” Of course, at this very moment, in walks Grant Kevlar himself. Upon hearing Jamie’s words, he raises his eyebrows at me, a delectable smile playing over his soft lips. My heart stutter-stops. He’s the stunt double to the hunkiest of hunky actors, Zander Zane, but somehow, he’s much darker and sexier than his silver screen counterpart could ever be. I’d so go on a cruise if he was there. Even though I’d never admit it, maybe a small part of me hoped I’d bump into him at a certain LA gym. “Jamie and Zoey are taking a Caribbean Cruise next week.” Anna smiles. Jamie widens his eyes at her. I narrow mine. That little skunk.

I guess I just got peeved last night because I was kind of hoping you’d checked me off on your sheet, since you were the only woman I selected.” The smile melted from her face. Oh shit. What had he said wrong? “I’m sorry, I—” “I threw my paper away.” Of course she did, she’d only met overgrown man-children, she wouldn’t want her information being shared with any of them. “I’m not on this cruise to meet anyone,” she continued, saving him from having to reply. “Like I’ve said, Ashley didn’t tell me it was a singles cruise and then she signed us up for speed dating. I’m just . . . I was already bad at dating before, and now I just don’t even think I want to.” “Especially since your only options are overgrown man-children?” A pink blush worked its way up her neck. “Yes and no.” He waited for her to elaborate. She rolled her eyes. “I briefly considered the possibility of a . . . hookup. Though considered is probably too strong a word. Entertained might be better. Anyway, while at the speed dating, I wondered if I could be compatible with any of the men there.” “And you found us all lacking?” Another eye roll. “You’re not on the list, Seth.” Shock coursed through him. So he wasn’t an overgrown man-child? He was worse? “I’m sorry, did you say I didn’t even make the not considered but entertained list of overgrown man-children?” “No.” She shook her head. “I mean, yes.” She huffed out an exasperated breath. “I can’t hook up with you on a cruise.” His mind went blank of all thought. Had she just said she couldn’t hookup with him? He could most readily assure her she could. “Please explain,” he urged. She sighed, causing her breasts to push against her strappy tank top. “Your friends with Zack which makes you sorta friends with Ashley. You don’t have vacation hookups with your friend’s friend.” “You don’t?” Too bad no one had ever told him that, he probably could’ve saved himself a lot of trouble over the years. “Why not?” “Because I might see you again. You can’t do the whole what happens on the ship stays on the ship with someone you might see off the ship.” Fair point. “But why would it have to stay on the ship? Like what if it was so good, you wanted it to go off the ship?” “Do you live in a rom-com, Seth? That doesn’t happen in real life. In real life, you have sex, and it gets messy. One person catches feelings and the other one doesn’t, or the sex is terrible but you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, or . . .” “Or you’re a widow who isn’t quite ready and you don’t want to have to keep looking at what you did?” Her face fell and her mouth dropped open. “Too close to the truth?” “You don’t know me, Seth. I already told you that.” He nodded. “But I’d like to.” She opened her mouth to protest, so he picked up another strawberry and shoved it between her parted lips. “I’m not saying I want to have sex with you, Courtney.” Though God knew he did. “I’m saying I’m not looking to meet anyone either, and it looks like our roommates have already paired up. Whether either of us like it or not, this is a cruise meant for couples. If we don’t pair up, fate will find someone to match us with.” “I don’t think that’s fate. I think it’s just the cruise directors.” He spared her a blank look. “We could hang out. Possibly enjoy each other’s company and have a great cruise.” “Without flirting or having sex or any of that?” He ground his teeth to keep from bursting her perfectly constructed bubble of denial. “We won’t do anything you don’t want.” Her gray eyes narrowed. Something told him that wasn’t the answer she’d been looking for. “Yes,” he clarified, hoping to ease her nerves. “We can hang out without anything romantic or sexual happening.” Though he knew if she didn’t want him, he could make it a lifetime without having sex with her, he highly doubted either of them could make it through the rest of this meal without flirting. Courtney wasn’t as outgoing as Ashley, but her subtle teasing and sweet smile were as effective at getting his attention as any over the top gesture. “Fine,” she huffed as if crying uncle. “I guess it would be nice to have someone to hang out with while Ashley’s tongue is shoved down Zack’s throat.”
