Alicia Hendley Reviewed in Kitchener Waterloo Record

The following review appeared yesterday in the Kitchener Waterloo Herald. We thought we'd share the good news.

By Jon Fear, Record staff

A Subtle Thing

by Alicia Hendley

(Five Rivers, 200 pages, $25 softcover)

Depression can be a painful, soul-destroying burden. And one of the ironies, says Beth, the young woman who tells her own story in this often instructive novel, is that as you wind your way deeper and deeper into self-destructive behaviour, your best friends and family can be oblivious...

Midwest Book Review Gives Two Five Star Ratings to Lorina Stephens

Midwest Book Review has given five star ratings to Lorina Stephens' And the Angels Sang, and From Mountains of Ice.

And the Angels Sang is an anthology of short, speculative fiction stories author Lorina Stephens has penned over the course of twenty-five years. Some were previously published in periodicals or writers' workshops; all offer snapshots of the human condition. From the titular story of how a pious man perceives angels even as he suffers unspeakable torture and execution, to the d...

Book Signing Guidelines

I developed the following guidelines for Five Rivers' writers as a way of preparing them for book signing events. I thought perhaps some of you might find them of use as well.

1. Dress appropriately. Think casual business or professional boho. Studies prove people are attracted to a professional, good-looking person and will often rate a person's performance or product higher based upon that appearance. Sounds unfair, but it is a fact.

2. Show up for your signing about fifteen minutes earl...

Review of Motivate to Create: a guide for writers

Lars Van Tol, a Goodreads member, recently posted the following review of Nate Hendley's book, Motivate to Create: a guide for writers.

This is the first book I received or won from the Goodreads giveaways, and hopefully not the last... thank you Goodreads.

Nate Hendley, in Motive to Create, has a simple message for those about to write: if the writer isn't motivated, the writer will have to be content with mediocrity. That's just what can be inferred from his epigraph, and while it is not...

Why Smashwords Isn't Working

Five Rivers first signed up with Smashwords November, 2009 at the urging of Brian Rathbone. Despite having known about the service, I'd resisted jumping into the Smashwords pool because it all seemed somewhat ad hoc, geek-driven and populated by more fringe elements than credible. (I'm sure I'm going to experience a deluge of frogs because of that statement.)

However, after reading Doctorow's take on the fallacy of digital book encryption, and Rathbone's sales figures, I thought, sure, why ...

A Subtle Thing: Introduction

To tease you a bit today, we thought we'd put up the introduction to Alicia Hendley's debut novel, A Subtle Thing, available in print and digital format from booksellers worldwide.

It's subtle at first. You're sitting at your computer one morning when you notice that something, just a little something, is there. The difference is so small, so nothing really, that it almost slips by. Maybe it starts in your stomach, nudging at your ribs. Or maybe you notice it in your fingers, shaking just a ...

Grand Opening of Coles, Owen Sound

It's short notice, but I'll be at the grand opening of Coles Books, Heritage Place Mall, 1350 - 16th Street East, Owen Sound, ON, N4K 5N3, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Saturday, Juy 31.

The new, expanded store replaces the old Smith Books at the mall, a move by Indigo to better serve the Owen Sound community. Manager Lisa Clements is more than a little excited about the commodious new space, right across the from where the old Smith Books had been located.

I've been asked to join the festivities by ...
