The Future of the E-Book

Interesting column at "The Idea Logical Blog" trying to get a handle on the upcoming issues for publishing arising out of the digital revolution. The blog raises 15 issues; the commentary by readers immediately adds more. (Thanks to M. D. Benoit for pointing column out.)

I'd love to be a fly on the wall at either the Digital Book World conference or the Tools of Change Conference mentioned in the blog; I've wanted to attend/present at the more academic conferences but the c...

Another great signing

This past Saturday, Lorina Stephens was at Indigo Books & Music, 259 Princess Street in Kingston, Ontario, signing copies of her latest novel, From Mountains of Ice.

The afternoon was a great success, with several patrons purchasing not only Lorina's latest novel, but all three of Lorina's works, which include And the Angels Sang and Shadow Song.

Many thanks to Christina and the staff at Indigo for their support and organization. Always so great to work with enthusiastic and dedicated boo...

Apple, Kindle, Smashwords and The Docket

Let's first deal with the bad news.

It would appear there is some confusion at Smashwords regarding their relationship with some of their international clients. While many individuals who use Smashwords as a delivery system for their eBooks are independent authors, there are also many small publishers using Smashwords. Five Rivers is one of those.

As a foreign individual using Smashwords (as with Lulu) the IRS requires a 30% withholding tax, unless a requisite ITIN and then subsequent W8-B...

Genesis of a cover

We thought we'd share some insight today on the genesis of a cover here at Five Rivers; that is, the process through which we take a design idea. In this instance the subject is Simon Rose's upcoming YA novel, The Insistence of Memory.

The story is targeted for the 14 to 16 age group, an action-packed speculative fiction starting in present day Canada and ending up in the dark machinations of the Cold War Era between the US and Soviety Union.

Lots of kids have an imaginary friend. Max, ou...

Virtual Event: Ahead of Our Time?

We pitched an idea to Indigo this week. It's a beautifully elegant, but simple solution to environmental and economic considerations: The Virtual Event.

Environmental Impact

As part of Five Rivers' commitment to reduce our carbon footprint, and increase our environmental support, we're looking for an alternative to the traditional book signing and reading which sees an author travel to a location and meet face to face with fans and potential buyers. Recently, we did a small test of a remo...
