Carrawburgh Roman Fort

The Mystery of Mithraism; The Temple at Carrawburgh Fort, Saturday 16th Sept 2023. The substantial earthwork remains of this Roman fort along Hadrian's Wall, measuring 450ft north-south by 350ft east-west, enclosing some 1.4 hectares. It may have been built as late as 130-132 AD. Located just to the south west of the fort is a fascinating temple to the god Mithras, built by the soldiers around AD 200.

Blommeskobbel Skulptur

This sculpture was built in 2020 by local residents of Kettingskovrt, as a copy of the many ancient tombs in the nearby Blommeskobbel forest.

Watling Lodge, Antonine Wall

Watling Lodge West and East were Roman forts occupied during the construction of the Antonine Wall. The site has one of the best preserved stretches of ditch from the Antonine Wall.

Whitehawk

Whitehawk Camp Neolithic Causewayed Enclosure talk/tour, Wednesday 13th September, more in the comments on our page. Causewayed Enclosure in East Sussex. Whitehawk Camp is one of Britain’s earliest neolithic monuments. The hill was chosen some 5,500 years ago as the site for a series of circular ditches and banks which marked the hill as an area for feasting, burials and other activities of a ritual nature.

Free Entry to Avalon Archaeology, Monday Sept 11th to see the richly decorated archaeological reconstructions of Iron Age, Roman and Saxon buildings. More in the comments on our page. The Avalon Marshes Centre in Somerset lies close to all the Avalon Marshes’ nature reserves. There are also new replica sections of prehistoric trackway along the route of the Sweet Track on Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve.

West Mersea

Mersea Roman Barrow Tours / Talk, Sat/Sun 9/10th September, more in the comments on our page. At Barrow Hill on Mersea Island, Essex stands this Romano-British barrow. Excavated in 1912, the barrow is 23 ft high and 110 ft around. There is an entrance protected by an iron gate and a passage leading to a tiny chamber which contained cremated remains in a glass vessel. Local legend tells that the ghosts of two Viking brothers are doomed to fight each night for the love of the same woman.

Stonea Camp

Stonea Camp/From the Neolithic to the Iron Age: The Creation of a Hill Fort Event at Stonea Camp, 10th September 2023 . Stonea Camp stands on a gravel island two meters above sea level amid the black Norfolk fens. It must have been a very wet place and the ditches would have naturaly filled with water. There is a single bank and ditch to the south west with three defensive lines to the north. There were three periods of construction and it is suggested by the excavators that this was the site of the battle between the Roman governor, Ostorius and the Iceni in 47AD

Welwyn Roman Baths

Tours of Welwyn Roman Baths, Saturday 9th September 2023. Nine metres down, deep under the A1(M) in Hertfordshire, there's a secret bunker protecting the archaeological remains of Welwyn Roman Baths. The farmstead was discovered in the 1960s, just as the motorway was being constructed.
