Monument for a Forgotten Future

The Monument for a Forgotten Future is a modern stone sculpture by Olaf Nicolai, Douglas Gordon and the Scottish rock band Mogwai. It is situated on Wilde Insel island in Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia.
The sculpture imitates a rock formation found in the southern Californian Joshua Tree National Park. In the summer months, a sound installation by Mogwai can be heard and intensifies the effect. The music comes out of the stone and runs for 26 minutes.

Feddersen Wierde

An ancient terp settlement in Wremen (Lower Saxony/Germany). It was inhabited from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD, until the people left the settlement in order to travel to England, where they became Anglo-Saxons. The houses of the settlement were built on terps, artificial dwelling mounds, in order to protect the houses against the North Sea. The houses were of the byre-dwelling type. The excavations between 1954 and 1963 delivered important finds and insights from this area.

The village of Aberlemno in Angus was apparently an important Pictish centre and boasts four Pictish stones along with one recently rediscovered in 2022. One is in the Churchyard at NO522556 whilst the other three, including the one labelled the Mourning Angel, are at the side of old Forfar-Brechin road (B9134) at NO5228 5592, 400 yards away to the NNW.

Giant's Caves

A return visit after 19 years finds this wonderful longbarrow to have been tidied up at some point, although still overgrown with brambles etc.. A beautiful long barrow near Luckington in the grounds of Badminton Park, but clearly visible from the lane. It has a near neighbour Luckington II just to the southeast.
