How far in advance should you promote your book?

This question seems to linger in the back of every author’s mind. When is it the right time to promote my book? There is a fear among writers that promoting their book too early will kill any momentum going into the release, but promoting too late will allow another book overshadow their novel. So, when does A+B=C? The answer is simple. There is no such thing as promoting your book too early.

The trick is to stop thinking of it as promoting your book.

Think of it as promoting yourself, and the book you’ve written is just an extension of who you are. Hence, you are your writing, and your writing is you. Your promotion should be centered around who you are. Sell us on you. People need to buy into you, and that’s where the hard work comes into play. Selling your true self to an online forum. Once that is accomplished book sales will come.

The first thing you should be doing, if you haven’t started this already, is set up a social media presence. Whether through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, or creating your own blog, people need to get to know you. I would also throw in there since you are a writer, you should be on Goodreads. Because all writers should also be reading, and what better way to engage with people then to discuss books you have read.

Now that you have your social media account set-up, engage with other writers. Some people say to only engage with those that fit your genre, I say that is terrible advice. Learn from all writers, expand your network. Join different writing groups on Facebook and Twitter. Give updates when you have something significant to share. Whether it be a word count or a link to a blog you created, just stay in present. Remember though, don’t make it all about you. Comment on another person’s post. This will get more followers, and people will be more willing to purchase your book when it comes out.

I found the best way for people to interact with me is videos. Whether it’s on YouTube or just videos of me having fun with my wife. Yes, I know some videos might feel too personal to share, but they allow people into your world, and in the end, that’s what you want. People will feel like they know you better. Make sure to post videos of all platforms, even if they are mundane. Not everything in your life will be exciting. Remember, we are selling your true self.
I hope these tips will help you.
