BOOK REVIEW: The Queen’s Assassin (The Queen’s Secret, #1), by Melissa de la Cruz ~ A classic, old-school fantasy story *SPOILER FREE*
Hello awesome nerds and happy Thursday everyone!
I hope you’re all safe and healthy, I hope you’re doing well and I hope you make the best you can to find time for yourself and everything that truly brings you joy, especially during these turbulent times.
I know I do, especially since I wasn’t feeling really well over the past few weeks and I really needed something to boost me up.
Melissa de la Cruz’s new YA Fantasy novel, The Queen’s Assassin, managed to do so, at least to some extend.

“Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Red Queen, this is the first novel in a sweeping YA fantasy-romance duet about a deadly assassin, his mysterious apprentice, and the country they are sworn to protect from #1 NYT bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz.
Caledon Holt is the Kingdom of Renovia’s deadliest weapon. No one alive can best him in brawn or brains, which is why he’s the Guild’s most dangerous member and the Queen’s one and only assassin. He’s also bound to the Queen by an impossible vow–to find the missing Deian Scrolls, the fount of all magical history and knowledge, stolen years ago by a nefarious sect called the Aphrasians.
Shadow has been training all her life to follow in the footsteps of her mother and aunts–to become skilled enough to join the ranks of the Guild. Though magic has been forbidden since the Aphrasian uprising, Shadow has been learning to control her powers in secret, hoping that one day she’ll become an assassin as feared and revered as Caledon Holt.
When a surprise attack brings Shadow and Cal together, they’re forced to team up as assassin and apprentice to hunt down a new sinister threat to Renovia. But as Cal and Shadow grow closer, they’ll uncover a shocking web of lies and secrets that may destroy everything they hold dear. With war on the horizon and true love at risk, they’ll stop at nothing to protect each other and their kingdom in this stunning first novel in the Queen’s Secret series.”

Movie Night: The Hate U Give & the Black Lives Matter Movement
Hello awesome nerds and happy Monday everyone.
I hope y’all had a great weekend, you had time to relax, recharge your batteries and spent time with your family and loved ones. Personally, I did all that and more, as my boyfriend had the day off on Saturday, so we spent the whole day together, before he had to return back to his army unit. Things aren’t as hectic as they were back in February and March, but his unit is still on call, as Apo is in the Special Forces.
Anyway… It was a pleasant weekend. Much more pleasant compared to the weekend other people possibly had. So, I decided to educate myself a bit further and I watched The Hate U Give, which is essentially the movie adaptation of Angie Thomas’s novel.
Let me tell you guys: I absolutely ADORED it! And cried pretty much throughout the entire movie!
I honestly feel ashamed of myself that it took me so very long to watch this movie (and not only that one), to read more books written by black authors and fully realise the extent to which black communities are oppressed because, apparently, there’s more racism in this world that I wanted to believe.
As Apo told me, “Just because you want to believe the best about everyone, doesn’t necessarily mean that this is actually true!”. He’s right… I wanna believe that people love people. That people want to help people. That now that many of us raise our voices and stand by our black brother and sisters, because BLACK LIVES DO MATTER, everyone will do the same.
I was so very disappointed to see that this isn’t really the case.
I know that Greece doesn’t face this issue to such an extend, but racism does exist. It may have to do with Romani people or homeless people, members of the LGBTQ+ community or people who seem to be “different” compared to society’s standards. And if the black community was bigger here in Greece, I know that racism would’ve been apparent about that, too.
I’ve already heard that we’ve paid too much attention to this problem already. Well, guess what! We haven’t! Because if we had, some people would still be alive.
I read somewhere that people feel astonished by the extent to which the Black Lives Matter movement has been taken. They shouldn’t be. Our generation was brought up reading Harry Potter and the Divergent series, The Hunger Games and The Shadowhunters’ Chronicles. We were brought up reading about teenagers who finally found their voices and fought against those who wanted to oppress them. So this is just the beginning.
I’ve been telling this a lot lately but I do believe it. We need to become the change we want to see in the world. And that is because the hate we ALL give, ends up f*** everyone!
I implore you, dearies. Educate yourselves. Read books written by black authors. Read books focusing on the oppression certain social classes have faced over the years. Watch movies and series focusing on those subjects. Do something good and good will come to you.
That’s why I highly suggest you go read The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas, and watch the movie.

This way you will support a black author, you will learn something important about today’s society and, if you buy this book by a bookstore owned by a member of the black community, you will also support them.
There are hundreds of ways with which you can contribute to this cause. If you follow me on Instagram, I upload stories there on a daily basis, so you can follow that link and see how you can donate and support the Black Lives Matter movement.
Thank you all so very much for stopping by once again. It truly means the world to me and I want you to know that I most certainly don’t take your presence here for granted.
Love you all to Pluto and back, awesome nerds.
I hope y’all have a great week. Stay safe and healthy. Be kind. Make a difference.
Till next time… Toodles!
