Between the Covers ~ Strictly Personal

Today’s Between the Covers is an excerpt from Strictly Personal, Singleton, Book #1. Enjoy.

Shrugging, he continued down the hall to his room. He stepped inside and stopped cold at the sight before him. The woman’s face was in profile away from him. Her long, dark brown hair was tinged with gold, and it was partially covering her face. Quietly, he walked around the bed and knelt on the floor next to it. Her honey skin beckoned him to touch, but he clenched his fist to resist. Her sculptured cheeks made him want to lick along her face, while her soft, kissable-looking lips made his own ache to press against hers. Stifling a groan, he looked back at her closed eyes. Her full, curling lashes fanned against her skin.

What color are your eyes?

He figured they would be chocolate brown and sexy as hell. As if she had heard his silent thoughts, her eyes opened. His breath caught, and his heart pounded against his chest. He had been right and oh so wrong.

They are sexy as hell. Out loud, he said, “Golden eyes.” He leaned closer to her and looked at her beautiful eyes.

Her eyes darkened, and then her fist flew out.

“Shit!” he cried as it connected.

He got to his feet. Another blow to his chest made him stumble. She smiled, a nasty twist of the lips. Then she jumped up and swung her leg. He staggered and fell onto his butt as her foot connected with his head. He shook his head to clear the wooziness and saw a flash out of the corner of his eye. She was brandishing a lamp. With a curse, he grabbed her arm before she could connect. She fought him as he yanked the lamp out of her hand. The woman scrambled back, but he followed her and grabbed her again. She swung with her free hand. He caught it and pulled her hands behind her back, careful not to hurt her. The woman jerked her head forward, but he moved his face out of the way.

“Stop fighting me! Who the hell are you, and what are you doing sleeping in my bed?” At his words, the woman went rigid and looked at him. He was arrested by her furious golden gaze. She studied him and sighed.

“You don’t look anything like the picture.” There was a slightly-accented, musical cadence to her voice.

“What picture?” He watched her in confusion.

“The one in your parents’ bedroom,” she replied.

“What? Who the hell are you? What are you doing here?” He narrowed his gaze.

The woman returned his look. “Which one do you want me to answer first?”

He stifled a chuckle at the disgruntled tone. “Either.”

“Let me go.”

“Are you going to hit me again?” he asked.

“That remains to be seen.” She smirked.

He let her go and she retreated, put on her shoes, and continued out the door. He followed.
“Hey! Who are you?”

He followed her as she ignored him and walked down the hall and then down the stairs. She picked up a huge purse from the entryway table. He hadn’t even noticed it. She turned and faced him.

“Noelle Locke. Your father hired me to redecorate this house. It?”

“You’re a decorator.” Excitement filled him.

No more pink. He reached out, grabbed her, and kissed her. As his lips touched hers, his mind screamed that it was a bad idea. She stiffened, and then relaxed against him. Harsh need gripped him, and he banded his arms around her. Murmuring, he swept his tongue inside her mouth. She moaned, and her tongue dueled with his. The taste of her swept him under. It was sweet and addictive. He pulled her closer and sucked at her tongue. Noelle leaned into him and whimpered.

Jacques put the last items on the tray and took it toward the living room. When he entered he frowned seeing the room was empty. He set the tray down on the table and noted the now empty blanket on the couches. Jacques shook his head and headed to where he figured she had went.

He went down the hall and although he didn’t hear anything he instinctively knew where she was. The door to the her home office was open. He stood in the doorway then leaned his shoulder against the doorjamb. Amara sat at the her desk her focus on the computer screen before her. The tiredness on her face made his scowl. He didn’t like seeing it at all. She’d been so busy lately and he’d been to going out of town more often than he liked. So he hadn’t gotten to make sure she took time for her.

“Amara.”

She glanced up and her captivating eyes were almost weary. “I know…I’m not working.” She smiled. “Looking for a getaway for us. We need some time away together.”

“Sounds good to me.” He smiled pleased and went around the desk to join her.

She stood and he took a seat and she settled on his lap. Jacques inhaled and the scent of her filled him. There was nothing like this woman who was his. It made all the busyness in the world go away.

“Promise we won’t get so busy again.” She said.

“I promise even if we do we’ll take time.” He hugged her and turned her head and kissed her.

And not just skyping when they were not in same area, calls or texts. He made a mental note to cut back on his trips. He needed to learn to delegate more. And he would keep that promise. They might be busy but he wouldn’t let that affect either of them. They would damn well take time for each other.
