Between the Covers ~ Dangerous Chance
Today’s Between the Covers is an excerpt from Dangerous Chance, Law and Protection, Book #3. Enjoy.
“Searching through a woman’s computer is as intimate as peeking into her bedroom.” Lissa spoke from the doorway.
He leaned back and glanced up at her. “Yes.”
“And I see no remorse.” Lissa came toward him.
He watched her and appreciated the innate grace in her movements. It was only by control he didn’t get hard just at the sight of her. Lissa came to the desk then around it to lean against the surface by his side. Cole leaned back and watched her.
“They said you’re called Cole Ellis and your partner Mateo Taylor— I wondered why he looked familiar he is related to Rafe, his brother. That the two of you along with Callie and Desari are going to be sort of my shadow until they figure out who is trying to kill me.” Lissa studied him. “I’m not sure that is such a good idea cause I’m too attracted to you.”
From the email he had read he already knew he and his partner and the other two had been assigned to her. There was also some support from others as they tracked down leads on what was going on. They needed to figure out why anyone would want to take out a baker. He smiled at what else she has said. She was to the point and he liked that.
“I can wait until things are figured out.” He hoped his control could hold until then.
With her this close that was being tested.
“If you are around me I don’t think I can.” Lissa scowled. “I don’t like not being in control. Don’t like feeling like this.”
He laughed. “You sound like your sister when we work together.”
“Ewwww….No comparing me to my sister when we are talking about getting physical.”
“It is physical I am talking about with your sister too.” He paused then thought of what he said. “Not that kind. Yeah I get what you are saying about not comparing you to your sister when it comes to certain things.”
“Smart man.”
“I’m known from time to time to have some good ideas.” Cole studied her then. “So do you have any ideas who is trying to kill you?”
“No.” She scowled. “I’m just a baker and I can’t think of anyone I pissed off to want to kill me.”
“Ok. Then we will need to go over each and every moment for the last few months then see if we can figure it out.” Cole leaned forward. “Tell me everything you have been doing these last few months.”
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
Lissa sighed. “You’re going to know all my business. There won’t be any more mystery left after that.”
“Don’t worry.” Cole lowered his voice. “There is so much more that I’ll want to know about you once this is done.”
Lissa inhaled then leaned closer. “We’ll see about this when you are done with business.”

Jacques put the last items on the tray and took it toward the living room. When he entered he frowned seeing the room was empty. He set the tray down on the table and noted the now empty blanket on the couches. Jacques shook his head and headed to where he figured she had went.
He went down the hall and although he didn’t hear anything he instinctively knew where she was. The door to the her home office was open. He stood in the doorway then leaned his shoulder against the doorjamb. Amara sat at the her desk her focus on the computer screen before her. The tiredness on her face made his scowl. He didn’t like seeing it at all. She’d been so busy lately and he’d been to going out of town more often than he liked. So he hadn’t gotten to make sure she took time for her.
“Amara.”
She glanced up and her captivating eyes were almost weary. “I know…I’m not working.” She smiled. “Looking for a getaway for us. We need some time away together.”
“Sounds good to me.” He smiled pleased and went around the desk to join her.
She stood and he took a seat and she settled on his lap. Jacques inhaled and the scent of her filled him. There was nothing like this woman who was his. It made all the busyness in the world go away.
“Promise we won’t get so busy again.” She said.
“I promise even if we do we’ll take time.” He hugged her and turned her head and kissed her.
And not just skyping when they were not in same area, calls or texts. He made a mental note to cut back on his trips. He needed to learn to delegate more. And he would keep that promise. They might be busy but he wouldn’t let that affect either of them. They would damn well take time for each other.

Between the Covers ~ Dark Callings
Today’s Between the Covers is an excerpt from Dark Callings, Phoenix Intelligence Agency , Book # 3. Enjoy.
“Only to you. We all trust you, Lennox.” Harmony’s tone was gentle.
“Then you all are fools,” he said coolly.
“Don’t get snappish at me.” Harmony’s reply was mild.
“I did no such thing.”
“You didn’t raise your voice, but I know the levels of that cool tone you use on people-”the one that clearly gives away your moods. That was a snap. Don’t do it again.” There was a clear warning in her voice.
Lennox frowned. That she knew him so well surprised and ticked him off. He didn’t appreciate Harmony being so insightful.
“Stop using your abilities on me,” he countered with a warning of his own.
“There we go. Even colder than before. I don’t need to use my seer abilities or empathy on you. You’ve been a disagreeable ass since you came back from Shadow World. I’ve been researching your world, but can’t find much. It’s really fascinating your race is so old and so mysterious. Did you decide about being the second to the king? There’s a training session in a few minutes, but no matter. You’re probably going to hole yourself up in your office, as you have these last few days. You really need to stop being so antisocial- it isn’t good for your health. Maybe I should take you to Medical to check your blood pressure or something.”
“You are giving me a headache.” Lennox sighed long and loud.
“You should be used to my change of topics in mid-conversation by now.” Harmony’s full lips curled in a wider smile.
“I am. But I still have a headache.”
The wicked gleam in her gaze and her smug grin made realization dawn.
“You do it for spite.”
“Of course. It’s entertaining, watching that vein right there tick. There it goes now.” Harmony pointed.
Lennox glared.
“Loosen up. Answer my question.”
“No. I haven’t decided.”
“That’s not the question I was referring to.”
” I’m not going to Medical,” Lennox said firmly.
Harmony chuckled. “That wasn’t a question, but a promise that if you don’t get your head out of your butt, I’m taking drastic measures.”
He ignored her statement, “You didn’t ask anything else.”
Harmony retorted, “You didn’t listen.”
Lennox rubbed the bridge of his nose. “Ask again,” he said patiently.
“The ‘Harmony, you are trying my patience tone’ is my favorite,” Harmony said cheerfully.
“Ask,” Lennox repeated.
“You’re no fun. I was waiting for the exasperated tone.”
“Harmony,” he growled.
“And there it is.”
Lennox stared, waiting for the question. Harmony’s brow was furrowed. Her full nose wrinkled, and the dimples bracketing her mouth were plainly visible. Just as she could read him, he could read her. The expression was her ‘let’s see how far can we push Lennox’ one.
