Happy Book Birthday to SEVEN GOLDEN RINGS!!
What wonderful day it was to welcome my debut picture book, SEVEN GOLDEN RINGS, into the world!! Despite the presence of a global pandemic, I managed to celebrate with family and friends!
SEVEN GOLDEN RINGS is set in ancient India and is the story of a boy named Bhagat who wants to pull his family out of poverty by earning a place in the rajah’s court as a singer. The story involves a math puzzle and an explanation of binary numbers!
First, I discussed the book in a webinar with my editor, Cheryl Klein:
Then, two blog posts published detailing some of my thoughts about SEVEN GOLDEN RINGS:
On Jena Benton’s blog, I answered seven questions about SEVEN GOLDEN RINGS:
And on the Soaring 20s Blog, I reflected on my dual careers in medicine and publishing:
And then, in the evening, I had a fabulous time at my virtual book launch with Silver Unicorn Books! It was wonderful to see so many familiar names and wonderful comments and questions! Fabulous Hayley Barrett hung out with me, and we had a special guest—my son Joe, who loved music and math from when he was little (and was inspired by picture books like ONE GRAIN OF RICE and ON BEYOND A MILLION), and is now a pre-med statistics major in college! I was honored to have the launch so well-attended, and I promise that there will be an EPIC post-pandemic party next year!

On Tara Lazar’s blog, I write about the VERY long journey and nearly 1000110 (that’s 70 in binary!) revisions to SEVEN GOLDEN RINGS before it was ready! And there’s another giveaway!
And on Vivian Kirkfield’s Perfect Picture Book Friday blog, Vivian suggests a craft to go along with SEVEN GOLDEN RINGS! Plus there’s another giveaway!

The STEM Women in KidLit Podcast!
I’m starting a new podcast with my friend, author, and scientist Artemis Roehrig! At a writing conference early this year, we got to chatting about being women in STEM fields (Artemis is an entomology technician, and I am a physician), and we realized we could come up with a huge list of women like us who have backgrounds in or work in STEM fields and also create books for children! So we decided to start a podcast to explore what it’s like…and so the STEM Women in KidLit Podcast was born! We will post our first interview with wonderful Vicky Fang next week! In the meantime, you can follow us on Facebook and check out our website! If you identify as a woman, have a background in a STEM field, and create books for children, please fill out this form to be considered for an interview.
