Finding Our Writerly DNA

fairy DNA by kyz
I’m blogging over on Writer Unboxed today and talking about the benefits of identifying our writerly DNA.
When I deeply love a book as an adult it’s usually because it has managed to rock my world in such a way that I know it has permanently changed how I look at and approach the craft of writing itself.
It occurred to me that these books become a part of my writerly DNA just as surely as the books of my youth became a part of my emotional DNA. Much like the books of my childhood, these stories open me up to the world of possibilities—not just in stories, but in craft. They show me what amazing things can be done within the scope of story. They give me a moment of true astonishment where I often think, “Oh, we’re allowed to do that?” and my writing world tilts on its axis.

Hello Hello!
Hello!
I have been a terrible blogger and all around communicator for the last few months. Well, honestly, ever since this new site launched I have been utterly consumed with writing the books, touring, and all around PUBLISHING STUFF and have been very lax about updating things here.
Well, that is all about to change!
Hopefully.
I’ll be going through and adding a bunch of extra material, a lot of it from guest posts I did for the Dark Triumph Blog Tour. Some of it may be old hat for some of you, but for those of you just finding your way here, it will be new. So feel free to poke around, especially in the World of His Fair Assassin section where you’ll see I’ve added the long promised information about the mythology of the Nine Old Saints of Brittany. Deleted scenes from both Grave Mercy and Dark Triumph will be coming along shortly I’ll be sure and mention it here on the blog when I do.
I am also vowing to stop being so quiet in here. For some reason, when I moved from blogging on my old middle grade website to here, I sort of clammed up. Not sure why, exactly, although I think some of it had to do with flailing around in the YA waters and trying to get the hang of this whole new YA world.
But I think I have my feet under me properly now (although watch: that’s nearly as good as taunting the gods so I’m sure I’ve just jinxed myself) and hope to do better in the future.
Part of it was thinking that mostly readers would be visiting here, and when I blog I tend to blog about writing or the writing process and I was afraid that would be Too Much Information for readers. However, after having hung around in the YA world for a while now, I’m seeing that most of those who visit author websites are either interested in writing for themselves, or looking for a peek into the writer’s process. Also? That’s the topic I get the most amount of email on–how to write, so I am going to try and unmuzzle myself.
Also, for those of you on Tumblr, I’m over there as well. I was having fun initially, sharing pictures from my inspirational folder, but then got worried because I didn’t always know the source of the photos, so I’ve kind of slowed pulled back from that. However, I do like the format a lot–it’s the perfect platform to kind of spill the contents of my mental junk drawer–and I will continue to use it, I’m just not sure how exactly, yet. I might start using it for smaller posts that don’t quite warrant their own full fledged blog post.
We’ll see how that goes. But I am also on a squeaky tight deadline for Book Three, so if I don’t follow through please know it’s likely because Book Three has eaten my brain.

Hello Seattle!
I’ve barely been back from tour long enough to unpack my bags, but now I’m off again to Seattle.
I’ll be talking and signing books at THIRD PLACE BOOKS in Lake Forrest from 7-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 18.
That’s my only public signing in the Seattle area this time around so I hope to see some of you there!

Dark Triumph Audio Update
I’ve been getting a TON of questions about the DARK TRIUMPH audio book, so I thought I’d put an update here.
The audio book is being produced by Recorded Books and according to them, it should be available for download any day. The CD’s will be available to ship by the end of the month.
Hope that answers all your questions! If I don’t see them available then, I’ll make sure and search out a new update for you.

Grave Mercy Paperback and Upcoming Blog Tours
I was so busy working on Book Three that I completely let the paperback release of Grave Mercy get by me! Yikes! It’s hard to believe it’s been almost an entire year, but there it is. To celebrate, I thought I’d share some of the fun foreign covers I’ve been seeing. I think it’s interesting they all chose to keep the original cover, but it’s surprising how small changes in typography and color can make a big difference.
From the U.K.
From Germany.
And Russia!
And let’s not forget Turkey.
And, I want to give you all a head’s up that there will be a couple of fun blog tours coming up with the publication of Dark Triumph. The first one will be a ‘pre-publication’ blog tour and will feature some extra material we didn’t end up using in Grave Mercy. (For those of you who wished there had been more time spent at the convent during the assassin training, these outtakes should make you very happy.)
The second leg of the tour will be a more traditional blog tour, featuring a number of interviews and guest posts about various aspects of the books. And of course, there will be swag and giveaways, so do check back in a few days to see more details on that.
And lastly, I finally have a book page up for Dark Triumph, so those of you looking for an easy way to pre-order a copy can go here.
