Fun in San Antonio!
I recently went to Romance Writers of America's national writers conference in San Antonio, Texas. My was it HOT! I left Oregon wearing a jacket and arrived in Texas to shed the jacket and pants in favor of a dress. The conference lasted for four days. I came home exhausted and revved to dive back into my stories. I signed books and gave away chocolate for the literacy signing.
I connected with some of my Northwest friends.Authors Leah Vale, Jenna Bayley-Burke, Linda Aicher, Shelli Stevens.
My publisher does a writing contest every year. Go to www.soyouthinkyoucanwrite.com for more information.

Here I am at the Harlequin party with the fabulous Lenora Worth. She mentored me before I was published.
One night I took a river cruise.
Of course I had to go to the Alamo.
I met up with some of my Love Inspired friends. That is the best part of conference. Seeing people I regally 'talk' to via email/online.

First review of Danger at the Border
I just learned that Romantic Times Magazine gave Danger at the Border 4 1/2 stars!
“Biologist, Dr. Tessa Cleary is called in to investigate the source of a deadly toxin that is threatening lives on the U.S./Canadian border. Border patrol agent, Jeff Steele will assist. Jeff views Tessa as high maintenance and is looking forward to returning home as soon as possible. When they are kidnapped, they must trust each other if they hope to make it out alive. This is the first installment in Reed’s Northern Border Patrol series. As the danger increases, the reader is pulled further into the story. The secondary characters are well integrated, and the suspense and romance are evenly balanced.” Leslie McKee, RT Magazine

Tracing the Family Tree
A few years ago, a Ancestry.com add dropped into my inbox. The site offers a 14-day trial period. I had always wanted to trace my family tree. Since it was Christmas at the time and I was between books, I took two weeks to comb through the Ancestry.com site. It was fascinating and frustrating. In the photo you see the little green leafs by a name. Those are hints that might lead to another ancestor. Sometimes the hints can lead you astray. Several times I thought I had found an ancestor and followed their leafy hint trail only to realize, oops, not the correct person with the same name as one of my ancestors. Then I had to back track to the point where I deviated from my family tree and try to find the correct person to follow. I had to take notes as I was going to keep track of all the information.
My mother’s ancestors were much easier to find than my father’s.
My dad’s father, my paternal grandfather, was an orphan by the age of three living in St. Mary’s Orphanage. That’s as far back I as I could go. The orphanage records indicate his parents were emigrants from Ireland working in the gold mines in the Grass Valley hills of California. I’ve requested information from the organization that has preserved the orphanage in hopes they will have more information on my grandfather’s parents.
My paternal 2nd great grandmother was born in Finland in the late 1800’s. She came to America at age 14 and settled with her parents in California. She married a man who also emigrated from Finland at age 20 to America and settled in California. They married when she was 20 and he was 26.
However, on my mother’s side, I could trace my maternal grandmother’s family back to England in the 1600’s. I found out that the name Teel, which was my grandmother’s middle name and now my daughter’s middle name was a family name going back to the 1800’s.
And I traced my maternal grandfather’s family to Ulster New York in the 1600’s. I also found records that my great, great grandfather at age 17, served in the Civil War. He lived in Illinois at the time.
I haven’t invested in searching historical records of other countries. One day when I have the time I will do that but for now I have this lovely family tree that gives me a sense of belonging. I know where some of my ancestors lived and what they did for a living, and when they died. Most lived very long lives.
Have you done any research on your family? What interesting things have you found? I'd love to know. Maybe we're connected? You never know.

How can she act like a loving wife when she has to constantly fight her feelings for a man she isn't sure she can trust? The Joy of Research
Hi, so I'm busy working on a new book that will be out April 2015. Its a book with a K-9 Officer and his dog. I love this type of police work. Mostly because I love dogs and love that human and canines can work so well together.
I love when I find great resources for research. One of the best places for me is Lee Lofland's Blog.
Here's a recent post on K-9 Unit vehicles. It's so interesting to see how the canines are transported.

Gingers with Blue Eyes Unite!
My sweet sister-in-law sent me a link to a Huffington Post article on Red Heads.
The article listed out several facts about ginger head people. I found point number 4 of great interest.
4. Red hair and blue eyes is the rarest combination in the worldThe majority of natural redheads have brown eyes, with others likely to have hazel or green shades. But like red hair, blue eye colour is a recessive trait, meaning that both parents must carry the gene for a child to be blessed with it. This makes those with red hair and blue eyes the rarest minority in the world, with only 1% having both. So, each one is about as rare as a four-leaf clover.
Another site I found for redheaded people The Ginger Parrot. As all sorts of fun and interesting all to do with being Ginger.

So did anyone see the men's aerial ski jumping competition on Monday? It was breath taking to watch. I sooo wanted Mac Bohonnon to medal. But the kid has lots of years ahead of him. He did great for only being 18! Go TEAM USA!
My book this month features a hero who is an aerial ski jumper.

Olympics are on! And it Snowed in Portland
Wow, we had a very snowy weekend here in Portland Oregon. I stayed in doors and wrote and watched the Olympics! I have a book out this month which features a champion aerial ski jumper as the hero. Nick Walsh is waiting to find out if he made the cut to compete in the winter games, but someone doesn't want him to live long enough to find out.
To see an interview with the heroine of the story visit http://craftieladiesofromance.blogspot.com
I had such a fun time researching this book. I chose aerial ski jumping because of my own background in gymnastics. At one time in my life I could flip and spin in the air off a trampoline or the end of a balance beam. Such an exhilarating feeling!
The men's aerial ski jumping competition stars on February 17th. Here's the schedule to see when your favorite event is.

Killer Competition
A champion ski jumper, Nick Walsh wants one thing: to win the gold for his late brother. Nick, has always blamed himself for his family's tragic loss – and so does everyone else. To complicate things, sweet and shy reporter To Julie Frost insists on doing a story about him. But as Nick gets closer to achieving his dream, someone will do anything to stop him. Somehow, Nick must keep Julie from getting too close as they confront a threat that can destroy them both. Julie and Nick are on the verge of discovering the truth about his brother's death…unless an unknown murderer finds them first.

I recently went to Hawaii with my husband for a quick get away. Well, it was a get away for me, he had to work a little bit while we were there. I posted a few pictures on my Facebook page but thought I'd add a few here too.
We stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on the island of Oahu.
Looking at the hotel from the other side. All of those buildings make up the Hilton. They have that cool pond for guests. The ocean is at my back here. As I turned around I saw a bride and groom having their pictures taken. How cool is that!
This is facing the other direction. Diamond Head is at the far end. In between is Waikiki Beach.
This is where I spent a great deal of time.
We took an evening cruise on this catamaran.
We saw this Duck Tour bus. Very cool. Not sure I'd want to go in the ocean in it though.
We were serenaded in the airport as we waited for our plane to take us home.
We arrived home to freezing weather. But it was so fun to get a way for a few days.
