Dragon*Con

Before we get to the fun stuff, Dragon*Con, here are a few articles that caught my eye this week.

Who would have thunk it? From the Wall Street Journal:

Amish Romances Are Hot

Nicknamed "bonnet books" or Amish love stories, most "are G-rated romances, often involving an Amish character who falls for an outsider. Publishers attribute the books' popularity to their pastoral settings and forbidden love scenarios à la Romeo and Juliet. Lately, the genre has expanded to include Amish thrillers and m...

King WOTY

Mario here:

If you haven't heard, I was crowned this last week as the 2009 Writer of the Year for the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers

The previous WOTY was our illustrious Jeanne (who at this moment is probably sleeping off a hangover at DragonCon). The WOTY was first awarded in 1985. Previous honorees include the accomplished Jasmine Creswell, Diane Mott Davidson, Francine Matthews, and Robin D Owens, and I'm proud to be on that list.
Pics from last Thursday festivities.

Back to normal?

After a week of signings and travel, I'm home for about a minute. Tomorrow it's off to Dragon*Con after the Writer of the Year panel at TC LoDo. On a red eye, no less. But there was no way I would miss the chance to crown Mario for real…

Last week I signed at three great bookstores. The first was Tattered Cover in Highland's Ranch. Great crowd—this store feels like home to me and the crowd was filled with familiar faces. I hope to sort through those pictures and put them up on my website soon....

What happens in Bubonicon...

...stays in Bubonicon.
Mario here:
Just got back from BuboniCon 41 in Albuquerque.  Needless to say, I had a blast.  More on that.
But first, Go-Go Girls of the Apocalypse.  Because of my titles like the Nymphos of Rocky Flats, X-Rated Bloodsuckers, etc., people kept telling me to read Go-Go Girls.  I finally met the author Victor Gischler earlier this month in Austin and he signed a copy for me.  As expected, Victor was a thoroughly cool guy, rating a full TEN points on the Biting Edge Hipster-O-M

It's time for Retribution

Mario here:
That's right.  Jeanne Stein's newest Anna Strong book, Retribution, has been released and there's no holding back.  The vampiric mayhem started last night with Jeanne's book launch at the Highlands Ranch Tattered Cover to a great turnout of friends and fans.  Here's  Jeanne giving us the cutest smile in the book business (no doubt practiced on sailors in San Diego).

I'm posting today to repay Jeanne for taking up the blog slack while I was in Seattle working with Mark Henry on a screen

Mario is AWOL

Well, Mario dogged us again and is off somewhere in the Pacific Northwest holed up with Mark Henry. He says they're working on a screenplay (god help us)—I say they're probably lying on the couch drinking beer and playing…well, you fill in the blank.

Mario also informed me that he didn't take any pictures at Armadillocon. Great. I realize he sleeps through most of the panels he sits in on (come to think of it, he sleeps through most of the panels he's participating on, too) so I have very few Con

Austin--Is hell humid?

Austin Airport Sunday 4:30 PM

The one true thing about all conferences is that just about every writer I know is happy when it's time to go home.

This is true even at a writer-friendly, writer-oriented con like ArmadilloCon.

The programming was interesting and unique. The presenter's diverse. I had my pal Mario there with me. Still, I can't wait to go home.

Now—here's the good stuff. We arrived on Thursday, a day before the official start of the Con to spend the day with Mario's sister, Sylvia. She
