Impossible Proof – A Testimonial

One winter afternoon at our house, my wife Jo Anna asked me to take her to the hospital. It was the first-time during years of marriage that she ever made such a request, despite previous major operations, including three open heart surgeries. I carried her to my pickup truck and raced to the hospital. There, …

Making Parents Proud

Ed Mitchell's Centurion Witness #1 Best Seller on Amazon

Years ago, after my foster mother died I found a surprise check in the mail. The attached letter informed me that my foster parents had given me the same amount of money that their nieces and nephews had received.

I never expected such generosity because I was not a blood relative. And they had already given me something incredible — a second chance. A chance that allowed me to work hard to graduate high school with honors, get into West Point, and become an officer in the U.S. Army.

While holding that check in my hands I realized that I needed to do something with the gift that my foster folks would approve of. I decided to use the money to fuel my desire to be a writer who could craft stories capable of touching the hearts of others.

Foster Parents of Ed MitchellHilda & Harry Hoseney 1965

It took years to get my first book published and see if it met that criteria. It did. Gold Rush 2000 won the National Publishers Freedom Award for Best Fiction from a small press. Other books in the Gold Lust Series followed. And two weeks ago, Centurion Witness became an Amazon #1 Bestseller and was the Bronze winner of The Global Book Awards for self-published Historical Fiction.

What was really special, in the book that won super recognition, was the dedication. I thanked Hilda and Harry Hoseney for changing my life. It took a long time, but I think I made them proud.

So, if you are thinking of a gift for a parent, grandparent, or someone who helped you grow into a better person, consider Centurion Witness. It is a story with a spiritual message, like the old movie Ben Hur.

Book 6 Review It

Ed Mitchell's Book 6 to be released soon

As a reader or writer here is a short journey I hope you enjoy as you experience improving my next book with your feedback to the author at the bottom of this page.

For a few minutes fancy yourself as the publisher’s trusted editor who has just received a new book from his best-selling author. Determine the book’s strengths and weaknesses by assessing how well the title, synopsis, first sentence, and first chapter work together. Realize you’re betting your company’s time, money, and future success on approving what’s submitted . . . or recommending improvements or . . . recommend killing the project. And since the book is scheduled for release by November 1st, please send me your feedback quickly.

Title: As an editor, first consider the candidate title submitted by the author. Does it intrigue you enough to cause you to pick up the book to read the book description on the back cover or turn to the first page?

Centurion Witness

Synopsis: Below is the author’s candidate story description intended for the back cover. Is it a story you’d be interested in reading?

The centurion is a seasoned warrior of Rome’s frontier army, decorated for saving the lives of ambitious generals, yet haunted by the harm he caused during a recent battle. His last assignment is, to again, be a bodyguard for the powerful. Quickly he is entangled in the security conflicts between Rome’s governor in Judea and its religious leaders who want Jesus of Galilee killed for sedition. The immediate political and religious struggle for control of the body of Jesus propels the centurion to guard his tomb.

1st Sentence: Now, does the first sentence below in chapter-1 draw you into reading the first paragraph? Do characters and action keep your interest until as you read on?

Chapter 1 — Good Deed

Near the Salt Sea

Having ridden for twenty hours to reach the Jordan River and climb above the warm shores of the Salt Sea, the centurion could not avoid sleep any longer.

At an oasis beside the road running south to Jericho and Jerusalem, he spotted the most defensible position. It was an instinctive skill drilled into him during his first campaign that had saved his life then, and many times during the subsequent twenty-five years.

While his horse and mule drank their fill, the Roman officer stripped off his tunic and washed the sweat and stink from his body. Finished, he lifted his loincloth and inspected the swollen lump on his right leg a hand width below his beltline. The smell is worse, he thought. Using vinegar, as the doctor had told him, he wiped away a slow-moving finger of gray pus, triggering a grimace on his face.

When the animals began jerking their reins, looking for forage, he dressed and guided the mounts past the palm trees, limping from the stabbing pain in his right thigh.

Up a short brush-choked path, they passed through a gap in the rock cliff only wide enough for a horse to squeeze through. There, he would only have to confront a single enemy at a time if things went poorly.

With his animals hobbled and fed, he tossed rocks away from the spot where he would rest. Then the Roman positioned his fighting gear, almost like a ritual, in case he needed some of the items in a hurry.

He began by setting down his brass-alloy fighting helmet. His belt with sword and battle-ax followed along with his plate-metal shirt. Then he laid his three-foot-long, oval shield face-down on the ground so he could quickly slip his arm into the leather holding straps. Tugging, he verified each metal-piercing javelin was snuggly hooked to the interior sides of the shield. Finally, he set down his bow and quiver filled with twenty arrows.

But he kept his hob-nailed sandal boots on, including the razor-sharp dagger strapped above his right ankle.

Satisfied, he placed a small clay idol by his rag of a pillow and prayed to the goddess Disciplina for peaceful rest. Sleep came quickly but his prayers were not answered. Soon the image returned that had haunted him since the bloody ambush near the Arabian village.

The woman with glowing eyes chased him through dark narrow streets, getting closer with each stride. When she began hurling fire at him and howling, he knew he could not escape.

The centurion jerked awake partially from the nightmare and partially from shouts by people.

Opening his eyes, he was surprised to see two brown and white goats in the gap a few feet from him. He was about as surprised as the animals, staring at him with faces appearing to wonder why he was in their way. Peppered by a handful of pebbles the animals ran back to the oasis.

Careful to not be seen, the army officer slowly raised up and looked over the nearby bushes. Below and off to his right, men were watering a large mixed herd of sheep and goats. Straight ahead, the women and girls had set up a large tent and were unloading cooking items from a cart pulled by an ox. Several families.

Coming down the road to his left, young boys hurried toward the late-afternoon camp with baby lambs slung across their shoulders. Little ones that had tired and not been able to keep up with their mothers.

Unconcerned, he started to lay down. But he stopped after spotting a nearly transparent smudge of dust drifting out of a gully a half-mile away. When a string of fifteen riders on camels charged out of the dry streambed toward the oasis, the Roman grabbed his fighting gear. Bandits!

By the time he crawled through the gap carrying his shield and battle ax, the sword-waving camel-riders arrived. Three immediately forced the women out of the tent. Meanwhile, all but one of the other bandits dismounted and threatened to slash the men if they did not do as they were told.

Moving silently down the trail to the tent, the centurion considered what he was doing. Better to die doing the right thing than live with what I did in the desert.

The lone rider angled his camel toward the cowering herdsmen. “Quiet! Or I will tie you up and let the jackals tear you apart tonight!” The apparent leader of the troop pointed his curved saber at the oldest herdsman.  “You owe my tribe tribute for crossing our land. I will leave you a sheep and take the rest of the animals.”

“We will starve to death if you do that,” the old man replied.

The rider waved his hand. “I understand. As a kindness, I will leave you two sheep.” The other thieves laughed.

Behind the leader, a pregnant woman was dragged out of the tent. She started screaming as two men forced her onto her back followed by the third one kicking her legs apart.

“Take all our animals,” the old herdsman pleaded. “But do not harm my family.”

The leader sheathed his sword and looked around. “Where are your guards?” When the cowering men lowered their heads, the bandit smiled. “Jews, you should have hired bowmen before moving to new grazing fields.”

The old man held up his hands. “Please sir, we are just poor shepherds. My granddaughter is with child. I beg you to set her free.”

“Do not try to fool me about who you are. You oversee your rich master’s land, assembled from poor bankrupt farmers. Only a few of these animals are yours — Yes?

“I do what I have to, to protect my family and their plots of land. Now, I will become your slave if you do not harm our women.”

The bandit shook his head. “You would not make a decent slave.” He pointed at one of the boys. “But that young one might. So too, the one next to him.”

At the end of the narrow trail, the tent hid the centurion from view by the three men threatening the woman on the ground. Surprise will give me some advantage. He rose and raced around the tent toward the men molesting her.

Will America Cross the Rubicon?

red flag warning, 2020 election, counter-terrorism thriller, Supreme Court

There was no turning back on 10 January 49 BCE, when Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon River with his legion of soldiers. That act started a civil war between the forces of Caesar and the forces of Pompey. Caesar championed the common people. Pompey championed the ruling elite class.

Similarly, since 2016 Americans have witnessed and participated in a struggle between the Donald Trump forces versus the Hillary/Biden/Pelosi forces. Trump has championed “America first”, law enforcement, family values, along with keeping and expanding jobs for working people of all races. While Hillary/Biden/Pelosi have championed the power of their political party and keeping their entrenched ways of doing business among the elected elites.

I worry that on Dec 11, 2020, that the U.S. Supreme Court moved America to the edge of a political Rubicon. The court did this by not considering to review the Texas filing claiming four other states violated “their own state laws, and thereby the U.S. Constitution”. More worrisome is that the highest court will lead the country across the American Rubicon if it will not consider reviewing what the Trump lawyers say is evidence of constitutional violations that allowed massive fraud in the last election.

The constitution specified elected legislators must establish each state’s election laws and procedures to avoid fraud to one party or another. However, Pennsylvania did not legislate voting changes before the 2020 Presidential election.

follow me in army jeep

By the U.S. Supreme Court sanctioning changing state elections laws by any non-elected Tom, Dick, and Mary in four states (Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin) — ignores the constitutional requirement that each state’s “legislature” must establish its voting laws. And that sanctioning swings the ballot box open to future voting fraud.

And if the Supreme Court allows that to happen, there will be no turning back. America will be changed. The controlling power of the people’s vote will disappear while the elites establish what is best for them instead of what is best for the public.

That will harm everyone, no matter what political party they support.

11 Five-star Opinions for Black Camel

Today, Amazon is just one of several places to find reader book reviews. To help readers get opinions of my counter-terrorism thriller from seven different sources, I’ve gathered them on the review page for Black Camel.

Here’s one: ★★★★★ “When it comes to action, Mitchell delivers. Drawing on his military experience, he is entirely believable in depicting the dangerous contest between committed opponents on opposite sides of the War on Terror.” European seaport and shipping security expert – Ray Gibbons

Here’s another one: ★★★★★ Enjoyed immensely!
“A very unique team of two individuals with an amazing amount of expertise in their dark trade. Not mercenaries in the common term, but for the right amount they have the uncanny ability, expertise to get a job down. . . The contract by the middle eastern fanatical terrorists who hired them? To reign holy terror upon the citizens of America. . . Two operatives stand in their path to glory. A highly courageous and talented FBI agent who goes by the moniker Cholo and an Israeli Mossad agent named Oasis. Both are relentless and highly skilled. Initially their biggest obstacle? The FBI leadership are reluctant to admit their inadequacies and lack of expertise which the Israeli operative brings to the table. This is an extremely fast-paced action thriller and a believable scenario. Enjoyed immensely!!!! My highest recommendation!!” Verified Kindle (Amazon) Buyer – 13 Oct 2020

Rioting – What would M.L. King say?

I have a dream, American Flag, Martin Luther King, Civil rights

As I watched Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kill George Floyd, an unarmed black man, I was reminded of growing up during the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Watching the non-violent marches and the Federal government enforcing the right of black students to attend an integrated high school was one of the reasons why I felt being a soldier and protecting this county and what it stands for — was a good thing to do.

After Floyd’s unnecessary death, I agreed that the subsequent peaceful protests calling for verified reform within police departments was a legitimate demand. But the looting of businesses, burning of buildings, and physical attacks on policemen and women caused me to wonder if the rioters and current black-movement leaders:

Know the history of the civil rights movement, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s dream for blacks in America and his influence on the strategy of the civil rights movement?
Know how Dr. King’s use of nonviolent protests fueled massive civil rights improvements in America from 1963 through today?
Or do they have another agenda rather than civil rights and equality for black-Americans?

I believe, if Dr. King could speak to us today, that he would answer those three questions by saying the following to all American citizens:

Georde Floyd, non-violent protest, Dr. King, Lincoln Memorial, I have a dreamDr. King, Aug 26, 1963

Dr. King’s voice: It has been 57 years since I had the duty and honor to speak to 250,000 black and white civil rights activists at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., on August 28th, 1963.

Much has changed for the better since then. Federal and state laws have been passed and enforced, even in the deep south, to implement civil rights and justice for the Negro. Thus, helping deliver to our people what was promised to us in the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and The Emancipation Proclamation.

These laws have opened restaurants, buses, schools, neighborhoods, jobs, voting booths, and elected-office to our black brothers and sisters. A Negro was even elected as president of this wonderful country twelve years ago. It is satisfying to look down from heaven and appreciate these building blocks of systemic-equality that did not exist when I, and other Americans, marched to Selma, Alabama.

Yet, racism still lurks in the hearts of some men of power, such as the policeman that killed George Floyd in Minneapolis a few weeks ago. So, my soul cried watching cruelty that I and other civil rights activists fought and died to stop. An act intended to block the sweet security of justice for the Negro who unfortunately crosses the racist’s path.

Bitter-sweet, but beautiful, was the immediate emotional-judgment, from coast-to-coast, about Floyd’s unjust death. An instant brotherhood that crossed all ethic-groups, ages, and gender that recognized that the racism of a few must yet be removed from America. My heart further swelled with pride when non-violent protestors marched in many states, legitimately demanding urgent changes in police departments.

I wish that the universal repudiation of racism had been seized by the today’s civil rights leaders, as a milestone in this country’s march toward true integration and equality for all citizens — no matter their color. But it was not. More saddening was the violent riots, theft, and attacks on businesses and neighborhoods while civil rights leaders did not condemn behavior that would harm our movement.

violent, riots, George Floyd, black lives matter, protestRioting in Minneapolis May 26, 2020

So, I will again share the words that I uttered at the Lincoln Memorial. “… there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: in the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again, and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.”

“… I say to you today, my friends so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

“… I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

equality, George Floyd, Martin Luther King, civil rights, protests, riotsWith justice for all

I also offer this advice to today’s civil rights activists. Do not let our glorious movement be kidnapped by people who hate, people who harm, people who loot, or people that have a political agenda against America. Instead, embrace the power of legitimate non-violent protest. Then bring a half-million Americans to the Lincoln Memorial and carry our movement to its beautiful goal: One country under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Safe Recovery or Stupid Stagnation

Safe Recovery, still safe distance repairing roof, Wuhan Pandemic Coronavirus

Many times I’ve stood up against stupid federal, state and local decisions, laws, ordinances, or rules. That’s why on Monday, I’m going to break one of Monterey County’s restrictions during this pandemic.

I’m going to deliberately support a local roofing-contractor to replace the old roof on my house. Why? So, income can start flowing to workers while not jeopardizing anyone from coming down with the Wuhan China coronavirus. And I’m going to do it without a county permit. A permit we asked for and were willing to pay. But oh no! I, and my neighbors, can’t do that until the brilliant supervisors and county staff say we can.

Please, let me quickly lay out how brilliant it is to impose a you-can’t-go-to-work policy if one-place in the county has a pandemic problem.

open farm land during California's Pandemic Wuhan China VirusCalifornia open farm land

Fact 1: I live in Monterey County, California which is a coastal agricultural area 125-miles-long and 35-miles-wide. The majority of the population is in two urban areas near the ocean. The rest is county-jurisdiction, mainly farmland or mountains. I live in the rural area called North County where the vast-majority of parcels are 2.5 acres or larger.

Fact 2:  Here’s today’s pandemic statistics by location:

Salinas City = 62% of the infected people.South County = 16%Peninsula / coastal towns = 16%North County = 5%

Fact 3: Here’s the City vs. County roofing permit status

>> Salinas City is issuing roofing permits in the 62% infection-area.>> The county is NOT issuing building / roofing permits in the 5% area

Fact 4: This job can be safely performed. I’ve directed my roofer to ensure his people are socially distanced while working on my property. I will also not get near them. For example, I will put a start-work payment check on the porch instead of handing it to the foreman. Plus, I will supply a sanitation station for the crew with hand sanitizer and hand washing items (hose + bowl + soap).

Conclusion 1: The county government is not flexible in removing work restrictions in the safest place to work in the county. That course of action delays the economic recovery for small-businesses in North County, California while the supervisors keep cashing their $10,000-a-month checks.

social distance, pandemic, coronavirus, social distancing, recovery from pandemic, safe recovery

Laborers can socially distance themselves

Conclusion 2: A low-risk back-to-work transition can be started in sections of this county, state, and country with confidence, thought, and trust in working men and women.

Oh, and Ed’s a damn revolutionary.
