Behind the Scenes on “Spectre”

Daniel Craig stars as James Bond in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures/Columbia Pictures/EON Productions’ action adventure SPECTRE.
My first assignment as full-time staff writer at Cinefex magazine is (nearly) complete. On Friday, I submitted the final draft of my Spectre article … and received the edited version back on the very same day. How that’s for efficiency? All that remains is for me togo through arigorous reviewand fact-checking process, after which I’ll label the draft as “final” and han...
Wasteland Transaction
This sketch is called Wasteland Transaction, but I’ve no idea what the transaction actually involves. Isthe womanwho’s rolled up in thecrazy off-road vehiclehanding something up to the guy in the post-apocalyptic lookout post? Or ishe handing something downto her? What exactly doesthat ornate-looking box contain anyway? I don’t know, but I have narrowed it down to the following shortlist:

“Wasteland Transaction” work in progress
The dusty remains of two very small stone tablets A map showin...Lana in Orbit
Sometimes when you sketch you screw things up. This was meant to be a drawing of a ship called Liana, which features in a half-abandoned manuscript that’s currently gathering dust on my hard drive. Just before finishing the sketch, I decided to printthe name of the ship on those pod-like things running down the side, only to find there were only four pods. So I changed the name to Lana. Actually, I like that more. Call it serendipity. Or a flagrant disregard for continuity.

“Lana in Orbit” w...

Ghostwriter Diaries – Way Ahead
Yesterday, 21 October 2015, was Back to the Future day. You know, the day when Marty McFly arrives in the future version of Hill Valley in Back to the Future II. That must be why things have turned out the way they have. Time’s just gone a bit screwy. It’s the only explanation.
“Explanation?” I hear you cry. “Explanation for what?”
Simply this: today I delivered Act II of the novel I’m ghostwriting. Nothing weirdabout that. What’s weird is that I delivered it THREE MONTHS EARLY.
How has this...

Harbinger Down – Film Review
For a sci-fi horror movie set ona frost-covered trawler in the middle of the icyBering Sea, Harbinger Down positively oozes warmth.A warm respectfor its genre. Awarm regardfor its audience. And a blazingpassion for its mission – to prove thatold-school practical filmmaking techniques are alive and kicking in this brave new digital world.
Anunashamedly nostalgic riff on classic creature features from the late ’70s and early ’80s – notablyAlien and John Carpenter’s The Thing–Harbinger Down fol...

A Green and Ancient Land

It may just look like a bump in the path, but it’s actually an Iron Age rampart – Fox Wood, Nottinghamshire.
In England, the ancient past is always just a footstep away. It’sone of the special treats of living inthis green and ancientland. Walk out into the countryside of your favourite shireandthere’s a good chance you’ll be treadingthe same paths taken by your ancestors thousands of years ago.
Take Fox Wood in Nottinghamshire, one of my favourite local spots for a Sunday afternoon stroll. O...

Ghostwriter Diaries – Aaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaah …
No, it’s not a scream. Quite the opposite. It’s a sigh of satisfaction. Specifically, it’sthe sound of a ghostwriter meeting his deadline, having concluded the 36,000-word first act of a fantasy novel and emailed it to his client readyto be opened bright and early on Monday morning.
In fact, the satisfaction is so great that I’m going to say it again.
Aaaaaaah …
