The Picture Strikes Back
Rummaging through the attic, I came across this half-finished painting. I started it in1983, butdespitean initial youth-fueledburst of enthusiasm, never summoned the energy to complete thedamn thing.
If you’re a movie buff or science fiction fan, you’ll see immediately that it’s a hodge-podge of ships and characters from popular films including Star Wars, Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, oh, and many, many more. The idea was to grab all my favourites ofthe day, and crash them together in...

Longhand Novel 01
I embarked on a new novel today, using not my trusty laptop but good old pen and paper. Writing a novel longhand might sound like madness– certainly in this day and age. Sometimes, however, it makes perfect sense.
For me, writing fiction is about rhythm. It’s about making the right-shaped space in the day, every day, to get the words down. Early mornings have always worked best for me, when thehouse is quiet and my head is clear. I make my first coffee of the day, fire up the laptop, and I’m...

“Napoleon” – The Silent Epic Goes Digital
The BFI today announced a new chapter in the remarkable story of Napoleon, Abel Gance’s 1927 silent film chronicling the life and times of France’s most famous Emperor.
This autumn, a new digitally restored version of the movie, completed by film historian Kevin Brownlow and the BFI National Archive, will go on theatrical release in the UK. You’ll also be able to watch it on DVD/Blu-ray, and online through the BFI Player. Best of all, the 5 hour epic will feature Carl Davis’s remarkable full...

Crown of Three
In the mood for some epic fantasy? Here’s one I’ve been working on, under the pseudonym J.D. Rinehart. It’s a sweeping saga of magic and monsters, wizards and war, set in the far-off kingdom of Toronia.Publishers Simon and Schuster call it “a Game of Thrones for a younger audience” and I’m coolwith that.
There are three books in the series. The first – Crown of Three – is now availableas ahardback, ebook and audiobook, with the paperback edition due out in just a couple of weeks. You won’t ha...

Dragoncharm Test Film
It’s nearly twenty years sinceI experiencedthe brief but intenserollercoaster ride that was the failed TV/filmadaptation of my first novel,Dragoncharm. Bob Keen, aneffects artist who’d worked on moviesincluding Return of the Jedi and Hellraiser, was slated to direct the project, with his Pinewood-based company Image Animation creatinga complete cast of dragon characters in both animatronic and computer-generated form.
I wrote about the project in an earlier blog post When Dragoncharm Went to H...

Animated Insanity with “Mad God: Part 2”
Can you imagine taking Fritz Lang’s Metropolis by the scruff of the neck, dragging it through a septic tank filled with toxic waste and owl pellets, electrocuting it, injecting it with dubious hormones, and irradiating its nether regions so that its secret inner organs grow tumours and swell to the size of rotted grapefruits before bursting open to reveal an inner landscape populated by hopelessly toiling figures whose future holds the promise only of immolation, degradation, decapitation, o...

Free Fiction – “Ephemeron”
Happy New Year! My first blog post of 2016 comes with a free gift attached.
Ephemeron is a story I wrote about fouryears ago. Havingstumbled over it while rootingthroughmy hard drive duringtheChristmasholidays, I read it through, and decided it was respectable enough tobe let out in public. It’s short and not terribly sweet. Actually, I was tempted todo a rewrite to dial it up intoa full-blown horror yarn, but I kind of like the way it just bubbles under. See if you agree.

The Year I Rediscovered Games
When I was a kid, we had all the usual board games in the house. As a family we regularly played Monopoly and Cluedo, as well as more obscure games likeBuccaneer (fight as a pirate on the high seas!), Masterpiece (bid in an auction for paintings by the Old Masters!) and Bermuda Triangle (will your magnetic ship be sucked into oblivion by the mysterious wandering cloud?).
Our games suffered from occupyingthe same house as me. Why? Because everytime I played a game, I wanted to invent a new on...
