What’s in the Temple?

There’s something in the temple, that’s for sure. Don’t ask me what. I only drew the outside.

Just Published – The Lost Realm

The Lost Realm by J.D. Rinehart

It’s June, which means you can now buy The Lost Realm, my new fantasy novel for young readers. It’s the second volume in the ongoing Crown of Three series, and picks up the action right where the first book left off:

The kingdom of Toronia is being torn apart by civil war. The only hope comes in the form of illegitimate triplets, who are prophesied to kill the king and rule together in peace. Separated at birth and scattered throughout the realms, the triplets face a desperate fight to secur...

Dragoncharm Special Edition – Coming Soon

“Dragoncharm – Special Edition” cover art by Graham Edwards

This year of 2016 marks the 21st anniversary of the publication of Dragoncharm, my first novel. It’s been out of print for some years, but just recently I’ve been looking at ways of getting it out to readers again. At long last, I think I’ve found one.

The idea is simple enough. Later in the year, I plan to republish a brand new ebook edition entitled Dragoncharm – Special Edition. I hope it will happen in the summer, but don’t hold...

Cinefex Takes On Deadpool

Cinefex-146

It’s always a thrill when the comp copies arrive. I’m particularly proud to have my name attached to the Deadpool article in the April 2016 edition of Cinefex. Writing these long, in-depth articles is a little like climbing a mountain –challenging, thrilling, exhausting, and always rewarded by a spectacular view when you reach the summit.

In this case, my ascent was made all the more enjoyable by the obvious enthusiasm displayed by everyone I interviewed about the film, not least its director,...

The Hoveringham Lancasters

Avro Lancaster B Mk II - Expired Crown Copyright Image by Royal Air Force via www.raf.mod.uk

In the winter of 1945, two Avro Lancaster III heavy bombers crashed in Nottinghamshire. The two events occurred a little over two weeks apart, on the same stretch of open land at Hoveringham, just north of the River Trent. Both aircraft were from the No.5 Lancaster Finishing School based at nearby RAF Syerston, where they had just completed night training missions. Both crews — fourteen airmen with an average age of 23 — were lost.

The first plane to come down was JB125, with pilot officer G...

Deadline Double

Nothing beats delivering a manuscript…except maybe delivering a manuscript a week ahead of schedule.

I’m not quite sure how that’shappened with the final novel in my ghostwritten Crown of Threefantasy trilogy, butwho am I to question the inscrutable workings of the universe? All I know is that the last of the plot threads have been tied up, the destinies of the characters have been resolved, and my work on that particular project is now officially done. Tonight’s celebrations may involve the i...

The Drawing of the Dark Tower

Dark Tower StackThe movie adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower is finally happening. Sony Pictures is working towards a release date of February 17, 2017 for the first film in a projected multi-part series, with Nikolaj Arcel directing and Idris Elba starring as grizzled gunslinger Roland Deschain. As an uber-fan of King’s uber-work, I couldn’t be more excited.

My relationship with Roland and his ka-tet of loyal followers began in 1989, when I picked up a trade paperback edition of The Drawing of the...

Cinefex 145 Now Available

Cinefex 145

There’s something hot on my coffee table.

It’s issue 145 of Cinefex, and it’s hot because (a) it’s just been published; (b) it hasthe Millennium Falcon on the cover (signalling the presence of a drop-everything-and-read-it-now article by my colleague Joe Fordham about Star Wars: The Force Awakens); (c) it contains my first article for the magazine as senior staff writer, namely a soup-to-nuts look behind the scenes on the 24th James Bond film, Spectre; and (d) as an extra bonus, it’s also ma...

Sensory Input

Moleskine-Notebook-1Writing in longhand feels different to writing on a keyboard. It’s like swimming versus running – both activities are aerobic, but they use a whole different set of muscles.

It’s also a reminder that the act of creation is a sensual thing. That’s easy to forget, when you’re swimming so deep in the words that you unzipyourself entirelyfrom the physical world. Yetthis simpletruth remains: however far you fly into the zone, the practical umbilicus ofyour chosen medium – pen, paper, typewriter,la...
