Workout Ideas for Busy Moms

Workout Ideas for Busy Moms: Exercise Anytime and Anywhere

Busy moms are exactly that, busy, so freeing a few hours at least three days a week in order to visit a gym is not an option. Sometimes even freeing up an hour to workout at home can be too difficult. However, you can get fit even without exercising the ‘traditional’ way. Many of the things you do every day are workouts in disguise. Adding a little twist to them will allow you to get your daily fitness practice.

Guide for Busy Moms: How to Turn Everyday Tasks into Mini-Workouts
1.      Turn shopping trip into a full-fledged workout

Park your car as far away from the stores as possible and walk at a brisk pace. Walking 3,000-4,000 steps a day benefits your cardiovascular health as well as speeds up weight loss (Current Cardiovascular Risk Reports). You can use a fitness tracker or a smartphone app to learn how many steps your walks provide and plan the route accordingly.

Don’t forget that shopping can also give you some resistance training. However, as hauling heavy bags for long is bad for your back, it’ll be better to make multiple trips. This will help you increase the number of steps as well.

2.      Cook with vigor

Cooking isn’t as physically demanding as shoveling snow or gardening. However, you do burn off some calories while chopping, mixing, etc. To turn this activity into a fitness workout add a bit more vigor into your movements.

For example, make a few sit-ups while chopping veggies. You can also forego a mixer to give your arms some hard workout. Do a few stretches when switching between different tasks as this will not only help your weight loss effort but also relieve the aches that develop in your body during cooking.

However, spending time around delicious foods often leads to ‘distracted eating’. Control this by training your willpower and taking appetite suppressors. This kind of supplements helps control hunger pangs and might have additional benefits like Phen diet pills. Get supplements with phentermine, caffeine, and capsaicin. Phen will reduce your appetite and caffeine and capsaicin boost your metabolism and fat burning rates.

3.      Vacuum more often

The process of vacuuming is a mini cardio workout in itself. Doing this chore more often will ensure that you get this full-body exercise that gets your blood flowing and fat cells burning.

This will also provide the benefit of removing dust and other particles that might trigger allergies or respiratory problems in a child.

4.      Play with your children

One of the best workout ideas for busy moms is to simply dedicate some time every day to play with your children. It’s best to do this outdoors, and this way your walk to the park will also be a form of exercise.

Play active games, like soccer, basketball, badminton, or just throw Frisbees. You can also play tag or hide-and-seek if the place allows. Your main goal is to get both yourself and your child moving. This will not only boost your weight loss program but also get your child into the habit of being physically active.

These shared play sessions can turn into shared workouts or sports practices as your kids get older. Exercising together is a great bonding activity that also enhances the weight loss effects of the workout.

5.      Do yoga on the couch

Do you have a 15-minute break you plan to spend relaxing on the couch in front of a TV? Turn it into a gentle workout by doing some couch yoga. These exercises are simple and won’t burn fat cells as effectively as aerobics. However, practicing yoga enhances body awareness and improves your flexibility.

Some forms of yoga are advanced types of resistance training, just using your own weight instead of dumbbells. Progress to these trainings gradually and the body-shaping benefits you’ll see will motivate you to replace your couch with a yoga mat quite soon.

6.      Wash your car by hand

Washing your car by hand saves you money as well as offers you a great cardio workout. Turn on some music and give your all to those crunches you’ll have to do when washing. If you do this every weekend, your car will be in pristine condition and you’ll get a great boost to your workout program.

One thing that might prevent you from getting this kind of exercise is that this task requires quite a bit of time. If you are a busy mom, you’ll have to consider your schedule carefully to fit the car wash into it. It’s best to do this early in the morning so you can get on with your business later on and not worry about getting more exercise until the next day.

May 13 – 19 is National Women’s Health Week- Your Health Takes Priority. Take Time to Be a Healthier and Happier You

by Susan Bowerman, M.S., RD, CSSD, CSOWM, FAND – Director, Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training, Herbalife Nutrition

Women across the country are stretched thin.  They’re often multi-tasking and trying to balance their home and work lives, which means putting their health on the back burner. May 13 – 19 is National Women’s Health Week, a national effort created by the Office on Women’s Health, United States Department of Health and Human Services, to raise awareness about manageable steps women can take to improve their health.  Herbalife Nutrition’s registered dietitian Susan Bowerman offers helpful tips and links to resources to help you be a healthier and happier version of you.

Eat healthy — Looking for a simple, easy and effective meal plan? The Daily Nutrition Meal Plans (available to download), created by Susan Bowerman, have built-in calorie counts and are designed to provide you with the protein your body needs every day to function at its best. All you need to do is select the plan that fits your needs. Then, create daily menus that include healthy and balanced meals, protein snacks, and shakes (such as Formula 1 Roasted Peanut flavor by Herbalife Nutrition).

Get moving — You should aim for 30 minutes of daily exercise to reduce your risk of common chronic diseases. If you can’t do your exercise all at once, the good news is that it’s still effective if your workout is broken down into short bursts of activity throughout the day, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. And yes, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking briskly (at least 3 miles per hour), and finding a parking space furthest from the store all count towards your daily activity. Additionally, for many, stepping away from your desk is not always possible, but you can still get some exercise in with this “5 Exercises You Can Do at Your Desk” video.

Be sure to catch your ZZZ’s. Adequate rest is critical to your health, and it is especially true if you have a busy, demanding schedule. Insufficient sleep can sabotage even the most disciplined health plan because tiredness and everyday fatigue may cause you to skip your activity, or you may turn to food to ‘perk you up.’ On the other hand, a regular exercise routine can help you achieve deeper, more restful and restorative sleep.

As a mom, I understand firsthand how easy it is to focus entirely on the family, but it’s also important to realize we need to make time to care for ourselves by making sure we are eating correctly, exercising and getting enough sleep so we can be healthier and happier for our family.

How To Pick A Name

Avoid these name catastrophes

Remember the days when you checked to make sure you were comfortable calling it out the back door (to call them in for dinner) or made sure it didn’t end in a bad way with the “banana nana fo fana” game? Now, there are even more pitfalls to think through.

Unfortunate Initials: Smith sounds solid, until the first time he has to initial a document. Yikes.

Awkward name pairings – first with siblings. If you have a and a , the alliteration is cute, but when you are using nicknames trying to get them in the car – Cas Cade is what comes out of your mouth (and frequently goes in your dishwasher). Be sure to test sibling names against each other, full and nicknames.

Also consider the world of emails. Many, many companies choose to use the first initial and last name. A last name like “Rock” is awesome, until you name your child . His first professional email address could end up as CROCK.

Name sharing: Make sure to google your future child’s name, not just the first name to read about its meaning, but his or her full name. You’d hate to have your brand new baby share a name with a crime lord or porn star. While that could always change, its worth it to give your baby the best start you can.

Artists

Painters can inspire us in more ways than one. Sometimes it is a feeling that is evoked from their art. Sometimes it is the story behind their art. And sometimes, it is the pure genius that they have created that may inspire you to want your child to share their name.

Time Out Magazine did a feature on the top ten most famous paintings in history and from it gave some inspiring names.

You’ll of course recognize some legendary artists like Da Vinci of fame, van Gogh of The Starry Night, Klimt with his intimate painting, The Kiss. Those are certainly some super-hitters of painters. You may also know the names of painters like Seurat who painted the beloved A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte as well as Picasso, the father of the cubist movement of art.

Some less mass-produced artists, but still highly influential include Vermeer, famous for the painting, Girl With A Pearl Earring, Botticelli who’s work on the Sistine Chapel remains a cultural inspiration. Abbott NcNeill Whistler, Van Eyck and early surrealist Bosch round out Time Out Magazine’s list.

Surprisingly this list didn’t include some other foundational artists like Monet, Harmenszoon van Rijn, Michelangelo or Henri Matisse – all inspiring names for your future painter.

For our future female painters, we drew inspiration from Harper’s Bazaar list of 10 Female Artists You Need to Know.

Unsurprisingly, she included amazing painters like the fierce self-portrait artist Kahlo, a female figurehead in the American Modernism movement, O’Keefe and the Queen of the Polka Dot, Kusama.

The list also included Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Cassatt Helen Frankenthaler, Chicago Agnes Martin, Sturtevant and Piper, all influential artists who changed the art world forever.

Not mentioned by Harper’s Bazaar, but surely noteworthy, Mother of Latin American Modern Art, do Amaral.

For the painter inspired parent, the artists of the last few centuries have provided many inspirational works of art that have affected society, as well as many names that may affect your upcoming decision.

Inspiration can be found in many places when making the decision to name your baby. Be sure to search our database of names and even sort it by area it originated! And remember, when finding the perfect name for your bundle of joy, consider changing up the spelling or gender. Updating a name can be a meaningful way of customizing it for your family.

Can Yelling Be a Part of Healthy Parenting?

by Guest Author

Every parent is guilty of yelling at their children at least once or twice. But why do parents yell at their kids? There are many different reasons, but the most common two are

Having the feeling of powerlessness or not being able to control the kids. When you feel your kids are disobedient or hard-headed, you may lose your temper to get their attention
When you think you’re protecting the kids from any perceived threat, like when a toddler runs to the poolside and attempts to jump off

Regardless of the reason and whether it was on purpose or not, yelling at your child can leave serious long-term effects on them, ones which they may carry with them into adulthood. I know kids can get on our nerves sometimes, but before you lose your temper, consider this.

Yelling Worsens Behavior Problems in Children

Research shows that yelling could create more behavior problems rather than correcting them. HVD or “harsh verbal discipline”, especially on adolescents, can cause an increase in behaviors like lying and stealing, which can turn into petty crimes and depressive symptoms later on.

Yelling Alters Proper Development of the Child’s Brain

A study showed that children who are exposed to parental verbal aggression like being yelled or cursed at are likely to develop mood and anxiety disorders. These disorders are known as forms of psychopathology, which slows down normal brain development. When this occurs, auditory and language processing in the child is negatively affected. Being quiet, aloof and anti-social are the most common characteristic shown in children with mood and anxiety disorders.

Yelling Can Lead to Depression

HVD or “harsh verbal discipline”, like shouting, cursing, insults, humiliation or calling the child names can make the child feel neglected and unloved, thus making them believe they are useless, worthless and inferior. This treatment can also increase chances of the child becoming overly self-critical and deficient in self-esteem. The child usually shows inactivity and low performance on tasks assigned to him especially at home and school.

Stress may also trigger certain illnesses, psychological imbalances and abnormalities in the brain pathways that involve emotional regulation, movement and habit formation. These conditions can include trichotillomania–excessive hair pulling, which is often observed in a stressed child who has lost their ability to control their impulses. Take a trichotillomania test for diagnosis and proper treatment.

Yelling Can Cause Chronic Pain

A study showed a link between negative childhood experiences, verbal and other forms of abuse and the further development of painful chronic conditions, which may include arthritis, severe headache, back and neck problems and other chronic pains. As the child becomes emotionally and psychologically depressed, appetite and other healthcare protocols may be forgotten or not prioritized, making the body susceptible to illness.

Yelling Should Never Be a First Resort

Words are powerful, especially when delivered in anger or frustration. Sometimes negative words are much easily absorbed by the brain and the heart than positive words. So choose your words especially when dealing with children because what you say to them is how they will see themselves in the future.

Jan Barboglio: The Story Behind This Luxury Bathroom Accessories Designer

by Guest Author

Growing up on a cattle ranch once shared by Mexican revolutionaries, Jan Barboglio learned early to appreciate the fullness and richness of the culture surrounding her.

“We grew up roaming a ranch where children searched for ammunition, coins, mule shoes and metal artifacts from the days of Pancho Villa,” Barboglio told The New York Times. The memories of an isolated, primitive and rugged land still inspires her artistry today. The patina of many pieces in the Jan Barboglio collection bring to mind the surface of an old saddle. She mixes disparate common objects to blend them with items and objects that evoke a hacienda lifestyle and the elegance of the land where she grew up.

Her work is known for being warm, aesthetically handsome and primitive. Even her luxury bathroom accessories have become collectible items because of her high commitment to quality.

Ever stop and think about who designed the luxury bathroom accessories you find in the indoor outhouses of wealthy friends or in Town & Country? Probably not. Most people don’t. For Jan Barboglio, the anonymity has been a blessing.

Following decades of working with her sister Christina, Jan decided she needed a change and began sculpting accessories and upscale luxury bathroom accessories and furnishings for her own home. With a childhood spent in Mexico, she had fertile ground for inspiration. The rich history and romance of North-Central Mexico inspired her every design.

Her first designs were meant for her silver, bronze and iron candelabra. Altarware and crosses meant to be house blessings were integrated into her design, and her love of entertainment later resulted in her iron charges and chafing dishes. Leather items and saddle stools filled her home. Each of these unique and special influences is apparent in her collection today.

Jan’s original designs paved the road to her current–and vast–home accessory line. The collection has flourished as it morphed into crosses and crowns, scrolls, roses, guardian angels and bleeding hearts. Now, the craft lady is known for linking the spiritual vibe of old Mexico to home decor.

More recently, Barboglio expanded the collection to include glass accents, as well as wood and wax. Heavy bases fashioned of clear bottle glass fit nicely with the dining pieces, while tables in natural tones are notable for complimenting the iron designs. Gesso wings, hands and a cross with roses make up the entirety of her collection, and her signature candles illuminate her designs.

Widely recognized for stylish quality, her growing furniture collection has made her a legend to her fan base. Her attention to detail is popular with collectors of any age since she fashioned her collector base after her rich history and roots. Milagro cards are also included with each purchase. She is known, and loved, for her talent in turning everyday objects into magic items of love and patience.

The Jan Barboglio Collection is available at most Neiman Marcus stores and in other fine specialty stores.

What Is Implantation Bleeding?

by Guest Author

Implantation bleeding is known as one of the primary signs of a confirmed pregnancy. It is often confused with periods by some women with bleeding that occurs while you are pregnant is not normal and also it also happens some days prior to your periods.

Although the statistics are a bit worrying since doctor’s state that 25% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, implantation bleeding does not always mean that you are having a miscarriage or even an ectopic pregnancy but you should still take an appointment with your gynecologist to rule out an anomaly.

Is it common?

Normally, a sperm fertilizes an ovum around 12 hours after ovulation and implantation of the embryo occur in the fallopian tube. The egg then goes down the fallopian tube at the same time getting bigger. Implantation of the uterus can be confirmed with a pregnancy test that will be confirmed by the presence of HCG or human chorionic gonadotropin hormone which is secreted by the placenta after implantation.

Implantation bleeding occurs basically when an egg gets attached to the uterus so that it can grow. This is what causes the uterus to bleed a little bit but does not harm the baby. According to a survey conducted on pregnant women, 1 in 3 pregnant women experience implantation bleeding which is around 30% of all pregnant women. As women confuse this bleeding with menses, unless they do not take a pregnancy test they will not be aware of the fact that they are pregnant.

Does it stay longer than menses?

The main signs of implantation bleeding are spotting or a pink or brown discharge along with cramping, mood swings, and headaches. The bleeding also stays for 24 to 48 hours instead of 3 to 4 days just like in menses, many women think that they are only having short-lived menses. Another big difference is the color; period blood will have a bright red color whereas implantation bleeding would be light spotting.

Furthermore, period bleeding happens 14 days after ovulation whereas implantation bleeding occurs 10 days after ovulation has happened. This can only be confirmed if you check your cycle dates. However, since it is light bleeding, it goes away on its own without any treatment.

Should you be worried?

Doctors say that a little spotting early in your pregnancy is not a serious condition and you should not be worried by it. However, if along with spotting you also get nausea, cramps, and headache and vomiting then it may be a cause for concern. Even though doctors are not worried by spotting, some still prefer to confirm with tests such as ultrasound or vaginal examination to rule out any other problem.

Pain for example with bleeding while being pregnant is not a good sign and should be evaluated further as it could be serious. Therefore, the main thing to protect yourself from any further complication is to keep a check on your cycles, go to your gynecologist even if you find a slight abnormality and last but not least be patient!

Three Reasons Why Lack Of Sleep Matters

by Maureen Lake

In a stressful world, moms are expected to do it all, have it all and do it yesterday. Why do we equate success with how quickly something can get done? Just imagine if you could do, have AND succeed. But, guess what? Lack of sleep matters.

It’s nearly impossible to do anything without sleep – yes, it’s like a drug.

Lack of sleep causes all sorts of problems from obesity, to high blood pressure, to insulin resistance…Why is it that hanging in the horizontal is looked down upon?

Keep Your Dog Safe With These Hot Weather Tips

by Guest Author

Keep Your Dog Safe With These Hot Weather Tips

Whether it’s summertime or it’s simply always hot where you live, it’s important to protect your dog from the ill effects of too much heat and from the other dangers associated with it. In this article, we’ll discuss some of the things that you can do in order to keep your pet safe from harm.

Put Safety First

When it’s warm outside, the lure of the outdoors is almost impossible to resist. It’s a great time to go to the beach or to hit the trails for a leisurely walk through the woods. However, you also have to watch out for all sorts of hazards that could endanger the life or well-being of your pet. For instance, when going outdoors, it’s probably best to keep your pet on a dog collar and a leash to prevent them from getting lost, from encountering dangerous wildlife or from running into possible physical hazards, whether it’s a highway, a cliff or a dangerous body of water.

Make Drinking Water Available at All Times

Never leave your dog without water to drink. Twenty-four seven access to water is essential because not only does it help your dog keep cool, it also keeps them from becoming dehydrated. Access to water is also very important when taking your dog out for a walk. Consider bringing a regular or collapsible bowl with you so you can easily give your dog some water when they need it.

Walk Your Dog During Cooler Hours

It is important for your pet to get some exercise, but exposure to high temperatures can also endanger their health. You can limit your dog’s exposure to heat by taking them out for walks only when it’s cooler outdoors. In most places, this usually means avoiding the hours between 10AM and 4PM. Remember, bring along some water with you to keep your pet from becoming dehydrated.

Make Sure Your Dog Has Access to Shade

Exposure to direct sunlight can cause your dog to overheat very quickly. Therefore, make sure that they have access to shade at all times. Also take note that doghouses can be pretty problematic as they can get hot inside very quickly. To prevent this from happening, keep the doghouse in the shade, as well. Even better, consider building a door entrance for your pet so they can easily access both your yard and the indoors.

Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car

Leaving your dog inside a parked car is illegal in many places, and it’s easy to see why. Temperatures inside a parked vehicle with all the windows closed can rise quickly, which can cause heat exhaustion in both dogs and people. This has led to the death of many dogs and small children. Also remember that rolling down the windows won’t be nearly enough to cool down the vehicle. Just don’t do it.

Avoid Hot Pavements

See to it that your pet never lingers for too long on hot pavement, especially if your dog loves sunbathing on your porch or driveway. Limit their sun exposure because heat from the ground can quickly raise their body temperature. When walking your pet, also keep contact with hot sidewalks or roads to a minimum because their paws can burn from the heat. Consider protecting your dog’s paws with pet boots, or simply avoid going out during the hottest hours of the day.

Protect Your Pet from Parasites

Mosquitos and ticks are known vectors of diseases, like heart worm and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, respectively. These insect and arachnid pests typically balloon in numbers during the warm months, so make sure that your pet receives appropriate preventive treatments from your vet to keep them at bay.

When it’s warm outside, it’s a great time to have fun and to enjoy the outdoors. However, it’s also important to take all the necessary steps to make sure that your pet is safe at all times. How about you? What safety tips can you share with others?

Ways to Maintain Your Weight Loss Motivation

by Guest Author

Consistent weight loss is not an easy thing to achieve  but absolutely attainable if you go into it with a positive mindset. These are a few tips that will help you to stay in the groove and keep working out until you achieve the results that you desire.

Find Support with a Program & Community

Programs which help individuals lose weight via diet and exercise are popular for a reason. The structure, support network, and progress tracking associated with these programs are essential to maintaining weight loss motivation. Support is essential in any health struggle even if its not through a weight loss program. Weight gain can be supported through other vices like alcohol which is a issue you need to solve before worrying about cutting calories or carbs. Support from a women’s rehab center can become the first step in gaining a support network that starts with overcoming substance abuse and ends with the body feeling you have been craving all along.

Partner Up

Another thing that can amp up your motivation to exercise is a workout partner. Invite your spouse, family member, friend or someone else who can act as an accountability partner. An accountability partner is someone who will help you meet your goals. This person will let you know when you’re slipping and will say something to motivate you to get back on track. Choose someone who you trust and wants to see you succeed. A workout partner can be a lot of fun, and it can be a unique bonding experience for you. Two people working toward the same goal is an inspirational concept that you can use to your advantage.

Invest in a Solid Scale

Investing in a scale which provides dependably accurate readings will help to motivate you to lose weight. If you have a nice scale at home, you won’t have to wait until you get to the gym to see your progress. You’ll always have access to instant gratification. You’ll motivate yourself the moment you see that you’ve made progress in the weight loss category. The price of scales varies from $10 to more than $100. Buy a digital one that will be highly accurate for you.

Track Your Progress

If you can see your progress, that progress can drive you to make more progress. That’s why fitness trackers and devices are so popular. They show you what you’re doing, and it boosts your confidence and your faith. Fitness trackers will show you your pulse, heart rate, steps, sleep patterns or more depending on which one you buy. This item can give you a closer look at your health and your progress, and it can cause you to get more motivated because of it.

Work with a Personal Trainer

A personal trainer can be a wonderful motivator. This person has specialized training, and his skill set is plentiful. They can act as your friend and confidant that you can talk to about your goals and aspirations. This person can also act as a helper who will strategize with you to come up with the best workout plan for your specific goals. Your personal trainer can help you with the nutritional aspects of your plan, as well. They can make some suggestions for foods that you can eat to help you lose weight. Furthermore, they can also help motivate you if you seem to be slacking or losing interest. You can find a personal trainer at the local gym, or you can look for one in the classified ads or phone book.

Those are some actions you can do to motivate yourself to continue to lose weight. Sometimes, all you require is a tiny nudge every now and again and that nudge can keep you going until you meet your goal.
