4 Tips For Healthier BBQ Grilling
by Guest Author
[image error]
The barbeque season is in full swing and delicious grilling aromas can be smelled throughout your neighborhood. Don’t’ waste time getting outdoors and getting some tasty treats onto your barbeque. Go with the classic hamburgers and hotdogs or try something a little more interesting like vegetarian kabobs or pizza.
In recent years with the rising concerns about health and diet, the barbeque has taken a few hits to its global popularity, based on some new research. When meats are cooked on a high heat like the grill they will sweat out their fat and grease. That grease then falls into a grease tray. Once the grease tray reaches a certain temperature, it can start to vaporize this liquid that will then float back up into your food on the grills.
The vapors known as Heterocyclic Acid (HCA’s) and Hydrocarbons can be dangerous to your health. These substances that are found in most meats have been connected to certain types of cancers. But don’t give up the grill just yet. With careful preparation and proper cooking instructions you can safely reduce the number of these carcinogens from adhering onto your food and ruining your favorite BBQ recipes.
Cook Over A Lower Heat
When you are using your grill, it is habit to crank up the heat to get your cooking going faster. It’s fine to throw it onto high to heat up, but once there is meat added to the grill, it’s better to turn the heat down while cooking. This may take a bit longer but it will be safer in the long run.
Cooking on high is what causes the HCA’s to start dripping into the pan, starting the vaporization process. Well done meat is where the danger lies. Take your time and cook your meat thoroughly but slowly and you will be able to reduce your risk significantly.
Precook in the Microwave
For beef, chicken and pork, you can use your microwave to precook the meat for just a few minutes. Using your medium heat setting on your microwave, cook meats for up to two minutes. This will allow some of the juices containing the HCA’s to run out before you put them on the BBQ grates. Drain the juices and pat the meat dry before transferring it to your barbeque.
Grill More Veggies
The only risk with grilling vegetables on the barbeque is getting your taste buds blown away. Many people don’t think to add vegetables to the grill but it’s just as fast and easy as over the stove. In fact, the heat radiation from the barbeque will help to bring out all of the natural flavors and sweetness of your vegetables. There is no need to worry about HCA’s and you will be doing your health and diet a favor.
Use Marinade
Marinade can be the key to added flavor and safety from HCA contamination. A spicy marinade can contain a good level of antioxidants that will counteract the effect of harmful vapors rising into your food. Using herbs like Rosemary, Thyme, Garlic and Sage can reduce the amount of HCAs up to 90%.
Add Wine Or Beer
Some of the tastiest marinades have a base of either red wine or beer. The alcohol in the spirits can eliminate up to 60% of the HCA’s in the meats you are cooking. They are also great for tenderizing your meat for more even cooking and add a great flavor to your meal.

Living T.E.A.L After My Cancer Scare
My routine doctor’s checkup saved my life.
It’s true. Four years ago, I was living life like any other busy workaholic—underslept and over caffeinated. When it came time for my annual gyno appointment, I kept pushing it off because I simply did not have the time. Besides, I felt healthy. I was exhausted, but I chalked it up to my 80-hour work weeks. I was bloated, but I presumed that was due to my diet. As far as I was concerned, these were merely “symptoms” of living and working in a city as a woman. If there was anything really wrong with me, I figured I would know.
So, I put it off. And I put it off. Until finally, I couldn’t justify putting it off any longer. I hustled to the doctor’s office in between meetings, coffee in one hand and cell phone in the other, expecting another benign checkup. I wanted to get in and get out so I could get back to the bustle of my daily life. What my doctor said, though, forced me to slow down. After the pelvic exam he said:
“Michelle, you have a suspicious growth on your ovary.”
He assured me it was likely nothing, but a few weeks later upon closer examination, he recommended I find an oncologist and his tone changed. The dreaded C word began to appear in my brain even though he never said the word.
Within three weeks, I was sitting in the office of the University of Chicago Medicine’s head of gynecologic oncology department, who informed me I had a very large tumor. Dr. Ernst Lengyel is one of the premier ovarian cancer experts in the country. He told me there was only a 10% chance it was benign, but to find the answer, I needed to undergo surgery.
Walking into that surgery room was the scariest moment of my life. I was required to sign release papers giving the doctors permission to perform a hysterectomy if they did, in fact, discover it was cancer. I was still confident it was benign. After all, I felt no pain. I felt no symptoms. Wouldn’t I know if I had cancer?
When I woke up from the surgery, I learned that they had performed a hysterectomy because it had indeed been cancerous. That was a terrifying moment of realization for me. The gravity of my situation hit me like a ton of bricks. I was in complete shock. I had cancer. It happened to ME. I envisioned my kids growing up without a mother. My mind went to the worst place.
They needed to confirm what stage cancer it was and whether the cancer had spread or not. After an excruciating seven days in the hospital recovering, Dr. Lengyel called in just a few days after I was home when the pathology results were in.
“We caught the cancer while it was still stage one. It didn’t spread anywhere and was fully contained. Michelle, someone is watching over you. This never happens. You are blessed.”
He’s right. Even though 1 in 78 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer at some point in their lives, only about 20% of ovarian cancers are found at an early stage. That means that 80% of all women who are diagnosed with cancer have a low chance of survival because the cancer was caught too late. There is no early detection test and symptoms (like bloating and exhaustion) are too general to provide a mass prognosis, so the only way to successfully detect this cancer is through annual checkups like mine. When someone is diagnosed in the early stages (stages 1 and 2), the five-year survival rate is 90%. When the cancer is caught in stage 3 or higher, the survival rate is as low as 28%. Only 5% are diagnosed at Stage 1 and that was me!
That means that for a cancer as prominent as ovarian, which is the fifth leading cause of death for women age 35-74, the only way to catch it early and give yourself a good chance of survival is by going to a regular checkup with your gynecologist and really understanding the symptoms.
I’m just one story out of millions. And I know I’m one of the luckier ones. My doctors caught my cancer early enough to do something about it, and I’ve been fortunate enough to make a full recovery. Today, I’m the CEO and founder of an agency, and I’m busier than I’ve ever been. But I manage to find time to squeeze in doctor’s appointments, because I know first-hand what it could mean for your life and health when you put it off.
One of the ways I make my scary experience worthwhile is by telling my story. I do my best to raise awareness. If my story encourages even one woman to get checked out, then it will have been worth it. I’m fortunate to be a spokesperson for the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) Illinois and we are doing a few things this month in honor of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. First of all, if you are in Chicago, make sure you look at the building across the skyline on September 14th. They will all be lit up in teal to commemorate Take Early Action and Live (T.E.A.L.) But the action can’t be all passive. Share your story with us! If you go to the gyno for your checkup, we want to know about it! Post a photo of yourself using the hashtag #KnowOvarian. Encourage other women in your life to take early action and live T.E.A.L. We want as many people getting checked up as possible.
Join the movement. Fight the silent killer with us.

Bone Broth – How Good For You Is It?
by Kerri Haack
Have you heard about bone broth? If not, you may be living under a rock and should evaluate some of your life choices.
Of course you’ve heard about bone broth! It’s either the world’s cure for all types of illnesses, or simply a tasty excuse of spending more time in the kitchen. In either case, there’s lots of information about what it is, what it does, how to make it and how to use it.
What is bone broth?
Well, it is stock. But, really good stock. The idea of what makes it bone broth over stock is that it is cooked longer and becomes thicker because of the collagen that comes out of the joints and bones. Also, the use of apple cider vinegar in bone broth, which helps in drawing out the collagen.
What are the benefits of bone broth?
People are somewhat divided on this. At the very least, it is considered a healing food. Think about what you want to eat when you have a cold – chicken soup! And research has supported your body’s craving, “Chicken soup may have a number of beneficial effects for an individual with a cold.” Some of those benefits include improving hydration, clearing mucus and a reduction of the inflammatory response caused by colds, according to this study from 2000.
Further, bone broth can help as a sports recovery drink. First, the replacement of fluid from the liquid, then the replacement of electrolytes with the sodium. Following that, the amino acids from the collagen helping to rebuild muscles, bone broth seems to be a way better choice than one of those store bought sports drinks.
Is bone broth the cure all? Not likely. The vitamins and enzymes from it get cooked and become less useful. The collagen, which will be broken by your digestive system for amino acids, probably won’t promote bone growth or restore lost collagen in your body. And your body will use those amino acids wherever they are needed, not necessarily directly for your bones, according to this 2015 NPR article.
While bone broth won’t heal all wounds or right all wrongs, it certainly won’t hurt. And will make your kitchen smell delicious!
How to make bone broth
Nearly every chef has their own recipe for bone broth. They range from taking whole chickens, meat and all, to using bare bones and scraps. Some use stock pots on the stove for hours, others instapot and some choose crockpots. As you delve in to your bone broth personality, you’ll find the ingredients and method that works best for you. Then, soon, you’ll personalize your own recipe to pass along. Because with bone broth, you don’t have to be tied to an exact measurement of ingredients; bone broth offers a lot of grace for too much of one, not enough of another.
If you prefer a bone broth that uses a whole chicken, try out this recipe from Epicurious.
If you want a bone broth that uses mostly bones with some added chicken, try this recipe from Savory Lotus.
For a bone broth that is made entirely from bones, check out our recipe for Bone Broth from Scraps.
How to use bone broth
The quick answer is to simply drink it! Some people replace coffee in the morning with a warm cup of broth. It’s also easy to use as the base for soups and gravy. When reheating leftovers, sprinkle some broth on to add moisture and flavor.
Once you’ve gone through your soup repertoire and are looking for more uses for bone broth, the opportunities are endless. You can use it to make rice or even bloody mary’s! It can be used to make a homemade alfredo sauce, braising meat or cooking vegetables (like cauliflower rice).
The problem won’t be how to use it, but how to keep enough on hand!

How To Stay Healthy While Traveling
by Guest Author
There’s no escaping stories from friends, family, and complete strangers about their travel experiences – both the good and the bad. People are always happy to share their various health ailments they’ve encountered while traveling: food poisoning, jellyfish stings, insect bites, and twisted ankles as well as general exhaustion, dehydration, and muscle aches. If someone ends of regaling you with travel tales that include illness and injury, don’t let them discourage you! It doesn’t mean that only superheroes can take vacations or that you don’t get to try the local cuisine. Follow these steps to help you stay healthy and still enjoy yourself while you’re traveling.
1. Prepare yourself. Do some research about the location before you visit, including a study of common illnesses found in the country. Read up on the availability of clean water and medical care and how much these things will cost you in the local currency. In addition, always make sure to sign up for travel insurance. While it can be expensive, it’ll give you a peace of mind and will save you lots in case something happens during your travels.
2. Sleep, sleep, and sleep some more. Traveling takes its toll on your body, especially after a long journey crossing multiple time zones. While it may be very tempting to sample the local nightlife on your first evening in the new location, it’s healthier to rest up and sleep off some of the jet lag, which can cause your immune system to plummet if not dealt with responsibility. Resist temptation and you’re bound to have a more energetic remainder of your trip.
3. Keep yourself healthy. A change in climate as well as different foods and drinks can confuse your body, leaving your vulnerable to sickness and injury. Make sure you take plenty of minerals, vitamins, and nutrient supplements to help counteract any negative impacts of your new diet and surroundings. A probiotic supplement is useful for rebalancing your digestive system and nootropics are great for boosting energy. Iron and B-complex vitamins are especially important for locations with mostly vegetarian cuisines. Stay away from too much caffeine and sugar to keep yourself alert and energized as they may wreak havoc on your fragile body, making you sick.
4. Stretch those muscles. You don’t need to be a yoga addict to benefit from a good stretch in the morning and evening. Traveling plus sleeping in a different bed than you’re used to can lead to aching muscles, cramps, and strains. Start your morning with a five minute stretching routine and make sure you cover all major muscles groups in your legs, arms, back, and neck. End the day with the same routine in order to get a good night’s sleep.
5. Pace yourself. You won’t be able to enjoy your trip to the fullest if you’re injured, so be sensible about what your body can cope with, especially during the first few days. Trying out a new sport or activity like surfing may seem fun, but make sure you get the proper training and guidance before you start. Don’t assume that you know better! Also, remember that you can’t do everything, no matter where you visit. Plan your itinerary such that you can minimize the amount of time on your feet wandering around the location. Don’t ignore any warning signs from your body – it knows what’s right for it!
Traveling should be a time for relaxation and new experiences, not injury and illness. Luckily, there are some easy ways you can stay healthy while traveling and still enjoy yourself, without compromising your adventurous side!

How Most people are Wrong about Rear-Facing Car Seats
by Rachel Fink
[image error]In certain parts of the world, it’s actually common practice to keep your child in a rear-facing seat until they are four years old. Surprisingly, however, this practice is not so common in some of the more developed western countries like the United States and the United Kingdom.
This fact is pretty troublesome when you consider the fact that car accidents are a leading cause of premature death of children aged between 1 and 14.
What’s worse, the vast majority of people who do use rear-facing car seats abandon them too soon. Since most of them associate the transition to the next type of seats a milestone similar to the transition from crawling to walking, they tend to take their children out of these seats at the age of two.
But you have to face the facts: just because you think so, it doesn’t mean that they are ready for the transition to the next seat, because…
These Seats Are More Comfortable Than They Look
Besides safety, comfort is probably the biggest concern when it comes to rear-facing seats for most parents. Let’s face it: most of these seats are rather small and larger children look pretty uncomfortable sitting in them. But sometimes, things look way worse than they actually are.
For starters, even the taller children don’t have long legs. Secondly, as long as your child proportions are within the recommended weight and height limits of the seat, they will be just fine. Keep in mind, children’s joints are a lot more flexible than ours.
That means, your child probably won’t feel too uncomfortable even if their legs are in an awkward position for 30 minutes or so. And as research has shown, contrary to popular belief, the extremities of your children aren’t at a bigger risk of breaking when they are sitting facing backward.
Most Pediatricians Are Not CPST Certified
Possibly the biggest mistake people make is taking their child out of a rear-facing seat too early. Sometimes they do it because of their gut feeling and other times, they consult their friends before doing it. Some people even consult their pediatrician.
So if your pediatrician tells you it’s the right time to place your kid in a front-facing seat, it’s completely fine to do it, right? Well, not exactly. You see, in order to assess this, a pediatrician needs to have a CPST (Child Passenger Safety Technicians) certificate. And surprise, surprise, most of them aren’t certified.
And don’t get us wrong – chances are, your pediatrician does a great work with your child – but it’s not likely that he’s up-to-date on the latest child-safety research. And if he recommended that you take your child out of a rear-facing car seat before their second birthday, he’s making a huge mistake.
Despite What Your Parents Say You Need This Seat
In the end, some parents – and their parents as well – think that there’s no real need for these seats. You may be thinking: my parents didn’t keep me in a rear-facing seat when I was young and I turned out just fine. Where’s the problem?
Simply put, times changes, and with times, so did laws and regulations. As we mentioned numerous times throughout the article, tons of studies have shown that rear-facing seats reduce toddler and infant injuries and fatalities in car crashes.
Now, that doesn’t mean that your parents have bad intentions when they tell you that you don’t need a rear-facing seat for your child. Of course not. And just because they’ve been lucky with you it doesn’t mean that you’ll be. Accidents happen all the time and it’s definitely better to be safe than sorry.
How To Make Sure Your Child is Safe and Comfortable
Get It Checked by a Technician
Installing a baby seat is definitely not that hard – but still – mistakes happen from time to time. and why not get the seat inspected by a professional before you put your kid in it? If you don’t know any technicians, browse a bit online, and find a technician near you.
Pick the Safest Spot in the Car
Placement of the seat is also pretty important. Surprisingly, the best spot for a rear-facing seat is in the middle of the backseat. That’s because there are fewer objects that can possibly hit the seat if you collide with another vehicle on the road.
Keep the Seat Straps Snug
When your child is along for the ride, you need to make sure that their straps are not loose. Again, although it may seem like it, a properly secured strap won’t cause any pain to your kid. If you need any guidance for ensuring that the straps are properly adjusted, watch this video right here.
Make Sure Everyone’s Buckled Up
Speaking of straps, remember that you and the rest of your family need to set a good example for the youngest member. Therefore, you need to make sure that everyone in the car is buckled up before you hit the road. This will motivate your toddler to follow suit and strap in before every ride.
The Bottom Line
[image error]
Last but not least, if an accident happens you should replace your baby seat just in case. Even if your child wasn’t in the seat and everything seems fine, the seat will still absorb some of the force of the crash. This is your child’s life we’re talking about here, so you shouldn’t take any chances whatsoever.
We hope that you enjoyed our article and that you found it informative. If you by any chance you have a question for us, feel free to leave a comment in the comment section below.

These 3D-Printed Ballet Shoes Could Make a ‘Pointe’ of Ending Dancer Pain
by LouAnn Moss
There may be 28,360 shoe stores all across the United States, but a young dancer can’t simply go into a Payless or a Foot Locker to buy the high-quality shoes they need for class. Typically, they’ll need to go to a local dance store, particularly if they need a specialty shoe for dancing en pointe. This advanced technique of ballet comes with a lot of prestige — but it also comes with a lot of pain. However, that could all become a thing of the past if a new high-tech means of creating pointe shoes catches on.
That shoe, called the P-rouette, was developed by Hadar Neeman, a graduate from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design’s product design degree program. Neeman was inspired by a friend who danced en pointe to create a new type of shoe with 3D-printed fabrics. When Neeman saw the state of her friend’s feet, complete with crooked toes and bruises, she thought there must be a better way to go.
And so, Neeman created a shoe that adapts to precisely fit a dancer’s foot and withstand the physical demands asked of both dancer and footwear. The fit is determined by a scanning process that can be performed via mobile app. This scan is then used to develop a detailed map and a 3D model. Then, the actual shoes can be made. The sole, toe, and insole of the pointe shoes are made of a lightweight lattice polymer, which conforms to the foot’s contours. The satin-like, elastic upper portion of the shoe is cut on a special shoemaker’s last that Neeman designed; this fabric material is placed between the lattice components during the process so that no glue or stitches are even required.
The result is not only much more comfortable, but it’s also much more durable. Traditional pointe shoes last only for about 10 hours of dancing. However, the P-rouette lasts for three times longer and offers extra support to prevent pain, as well as some of the most common injuries dancers experience.
The P-rouette looks like a hybrid of the traditional and the high-tech, which is actually exactly what it is. The satin-like material retains its familiar blush pink hue, but the toe looks far more cutting-edge and cushioned. While it’s not yet clear whether these pointe shoes will help dancers all around the world protect their bodies, the idea is certainly a promising one.
We’re using 3D printers much more these days, as they’ve become more affordable and accessible. They can create everything from printed concrete materials to artificial body parts. And now, they can even be used to make a dance shoe that provides a better fit and protects individuals from injury.

3 Tips to Make Sure Your Child Is Safe at Camp
by LouAnn Moss
[image error]While summer seems to be flying by, as per usual, there’s still plenty of time for your kids to be involved in summer camps and similar youth programs. With more than 14 million children and adults going to camp each year, summer camp is something every child should get to experience. But while summer camp can be loads of fun, it’s also important to ensure your child is being safe at camp. An injury can quickly ruin the camp experience, so let’s take a look at a few ways kids can be safe at camp this summer.
First things first, it’s important for kids to always stay hydrated. No matter what they’re doing, being outside without ample hydration is a recipe for disaster. Dehydration is extremely common during the summer, especially among young kids. So campers should always be drinking plenty of water. Most camps will provide water as needed or have drinking fountains stationed around the camp. Especially on hot, humid days, kids should make sure to always have water with them. As a parent, you can do your part in sending your kid to camp with a reusable water bottle so they can fill it up as needed.
Along with staying hydrated, kids should take extra care of protecting their skin while at camp. During the day, even when the sun isn’t out, kids should have plenty of sunscreen on. Sunburns aren’t only painful and annoying, but they can cause serious skin damage. Additionally, kids should wear bug spray to keep mosquitos at bay. Mosquito bites can be itchy and cause irritation, but they can also spread diseases like Lyme Disease. So it’s important for kids to protect themselves from bug bites. And lastly, kids should always be aware of their surroundings. When they’re in heavily wooded areas, they may come across plants like poison ivy, which 85% of people are allergic to. Poisonous plants can cause rashes and other skin irritation, so campers should always be on the lookout for them.
And last but not least, the most simple way campers can stay safe is by following the rules. Most camps have a safety program that is in place to protect campers. Camp staff, parents, and attendees should all be aware of the rules and why they’re in place. Staff members can do their part in enforcing the rules so kids can be protected. Safety programs or guides should also include camp staff understanding instructions for giving medications to campers. Unfortunately, about 7,000 Americans die each year due to medication errors. While camp staff members are properly trained in providing medications, parents and campers should ensure everyone understands which medications should be given when. Furthermore, rules regarding simple things like never swimming alone, having to wear a lifejacket, and being supervised when playing in certain areas can decrease the chance of injuries significantly.
So if your child is headed out to camp soon, consider sitting down with them and talking about safety. Camp can be a really fun experience, and being safe can make sure campers have fun without getting injured.

What You Should Know Before Hiring a Nanny
by Guest Author
Looking for a nanny is definitely easier said than done. For many parents, it’s all about finding someone who is jigsaw fit for you family, someone who who ticks all the boxes. At least most of the boxes! Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good when you’re looking for a nanny. While it’s smart to have high expectations, it’s also important to stay realistic about what the job entails and how capable anyone can be to fulfill it. Here’s our list of things that you should know to expect from a caregiver but also what you shouldn’t expect.
[image error]1. A Skilled & Highly Professional Nanny
For starters, being a nanny is a real job and like any other job, you expect your caregiver to be adept and skilled. It will certainly help if a babysitter has childcare qualifications or perhaps some experience working in a similar environment. This means hiring someone who understands their responsibilities and creates trust when you are not around. To be on the safe side, it’s better if you work with a work agreement where you have the responsibilities of the caregiver mapped out clearly before you can get started. Determine how much work the nanny will need to do, including number of hours a day and responsibilities depending on the age of your children. Keep in mind that highly skilled nannies may cost more, but it may be your best option if you can afford it.
2. A Passionate Nanny
You should expect someone who goes that extra mile to get their duties done without an insistent push from you. Expect a self-driven nanny that you can trust to get things done in a timely and efficient manner. It can only be possible if he or she loves what they do to an extent that they can do even more than you expect!
3. A Nanny with a Good Relationship With Your Family
This could well have been the first trait on this list. Of course you’ll want a nanny who loves being around you and especially the kids. You expect that the babysitter will love handling your kids and most importantly that your kids love being around. Again, this points towards someone who has a blend of enthusiasm, creativity, and fun despite at times having to handle some long and arduous hours of work.
4. A Good Learner
Don’t expect a caregivier who will come in totally refined, but you at least want someone who is ready to learn. Even a child care provider who is trained in early childhood development will still have something to learn, and the right fit should fancy getting corrections and pointers from your side.
A good nanny should also be:
A person who is good at resolving conflicts
A person with the ability to advocate for family values and structure
A person with the ability to communicate with you and your family members
A person you can rely on most of the time
What You Should Not Expect When Hiring A Nanny
Enough of what you should expect, now let’s look at things from a different angle. Here are a few things that you shouldn’t expect from a caregiver.
1. A Nanny Who is a Jack Of All Trades
Don’t expect a babysitter who can do it all. In fact, a nanny is not a maid or a servant who will help you do everything around the house. A nanny is primarily hired to help you take care of your children and it’s best if both of you understand this in order to create a proper working relationship.
2. A Nanny Who Works Under The Table
You might be tempted to do local arrangements in the way that you compensate your caregiver, perhaps to save costs and write off some taxes. It sounds like a good idea to both of you but there is a negative side to this. Your child care provider will find it difficult to access things like loans, credit cards, and mortgages as credit institutions won’t have the leverage in the form of documented income. You should also be wary of getting into legal problems should anything go wrong.
3. A Nanny That Accepts Unpaid Overtimes
Most professional nannies would be willing to work overtime and even step in when there is an emergency, but this doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be paid for this. This is especially the case if unpaid overtimes aren’t documented in the contract you struck. So as a rule of thumb, ensure that you compensate your nanny for overtimes and and always make sure to pay them on time.
Final Remarks
In a nutshell, you need to keep your priorities realistic when you are out to find a nanny Melbourne, New York, London, or any location you live in. Remember that it’s a two-way affair, so if you’re to get the right nanny for your kids, then you will need to meet your nanny halfway. You will have to play a role in things like handling payroll and taxes while your nanny takes care of the children.
