Hi folks
It’s been a while since I posted. I’ve been working hard on my next novel in the Annals of Nether-Staining, which I hope will be released for around March 2020. I’ll tell you the title in due course.
Anyway, because it’s progressing well I thought I’d share the love and so it’s time for a KINDLE E-BOOK GIVEAWAY!
In honour of the birthday of of master-navigator Captain James Cook (7th November 1728), hailing from the mighty Yorkshire, who is responsible for much exploration, charting and discovery of the south seas, I thought I’d offer “Baabaric” and “Stoned” FREE on Kindle from 7th November to 9th November inclusive.

Theatre of Life…not Free for Much Longer…Grab Yours Now!
Hi there
Last reminder I’ll give but my Grandpa’s memoirs, entitled “Theatre of Life” is still free for a short time. A biographical account of life in the Second World War, as well as life in amateur theatre and the depression era, hopefully there will be something within which might just educate as well as entertain.
I hope you enjoy his words, published 15 years after his death in 2004, but still relevant today. Please review too.

Theatre of Life is Still Free!
Theatre of Life is still free as an e-book (until end of 5th Sept)! Free I tell you!
CLICK HERE FOR LINKS TO YOUR FAVOURITE AMAZON STORE
Published in honour of my Grandpa, Albert Edward Johns, this memoir tells his story of his life growing up in the depression era in a mining community, his experiences in the British Merchant Navy during the Second World War and finally his experiences as a Pantomime Dame in amateur theatre throughout his life. Not exactly three topics you would expect as bedfellows in the same short work, but then life is a rich tapestry.
You’ll find a bit of social history in here, an insight into life on various ships during the War and also a good degree of comedy in his own words. Plus a family angle due to contributions from myself, Dad and Brother.
I hope you enjoy it. Please do review if you download.

Theatre of Life – Now Available!
Today, 2nd September 2019, is the anniversary of the end of the Second World War (although there are many anniversary dates linked to this). It is also the date I selected to release the memoirs of my Grandpa, Albert Edward Johns. Albert sadly died in March 2004 but hopefully he would be proud to know that, in the way technology has evolved since his death, that his words about his life can now be released to the world.
Even better news is that because I want as many people as possible to read his words, and maybe learn a little of the Second World War and its horrors, I am making the novel free in its e-book format for 5 days. The paperback carries a small charge.

In this biography, you will find a personal account of growing up in depression era Nottinghamshire, life in various theatres of war while in the British Merchant Navy during the War, and finally an account of life as a Pantomime Dame in amateur theatre.
I genuinely hope you enjoy his words and take something from them.

Rugby League – Born in Yorkshire
You may not know this but Rugby League was born in Yorkshire, on 29th August 1895 at the George Hotel in Huddersfield. This was a result of a dispute linked to the professionalism (and thus payment) of players. It’s actually a great example of the North-South divide that exists in England to this day.
Nether-Staining’s private gym owner, Smutty Mathew, was asked what he made of the sport recently…here is what he said…
“Lots of manly men tackling each other and rolling around in the dirt, maybe having a bit of a scrum so they can get closer and smell the sweat coming off their heaving bodies. It’s any excuse to grapple each other really. In short, I rather like it, especially the shape of their balls, STS.”
Cue his puckering and pouting and nodding with a knowing smile.
Note – if you’ve not read “Stoned” yet…you’ll see much more of Smutty Mathew there…click on the title to learn more…

Theatre of Life – Coming Soon
To coincide with the end of the Second World War, when Japan formally surrendered on 2 September 1945, the memoirs of Albert Edward Johns, my Grandpa, called “Theatre of Life” will be published on this anniversary and will be available on Amazon as an e-book or paperback.
The text is split into three main parts and will cover:
His early life growing up in Nottinghamshire during the depression era
His experiences in the British Merchant Navy during the Second World War, from North Africa to the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean
His experiences as a Pantomime Dame in amateur theatre throughout his life
Hopefully you can see the merits of using the word “Theatre” in the book title.
I hope this small tome will be of interest to some of you on its release.
Thank you in advance if you choose to read, Albert would be delighted.

A Third Review for “Stoned”
You wait ages for a bus and then three come along in quick succession!
Good news, this is the first FIVE STAR RATING for “Stoned“, the sequel to “Baabaric“. From amazon.co.uk, here is said review (thank you wholeheartedly)…
“Stoned picks up from where Baabaric left off and while it isn’t essential to have read the first book first, it makes sense to do so. We follow Gordon and Mick once more as they deal with a new threat to Nether-Staining, this time stemming from earth as there appear to be plans afoot to merge their beloved Yorkshire with Lancashire (“the bastards”, as Gordon would say). The book deals with quite a few current world political themes, albeit set in a small Yorkshire village and in a comedic fashion. It’s written in a similarly light-hearted way to Baabaric with elements of Carry On-esque humour meeting Last of the Summer Wine (if you can remember that far back). The list of “heroes” has been expanded from Baabaric and the storyline is less linear meaning greater intrigue – and if you are thinking that it doesn’t sound very sci-fi, there are certainly sci-fi elements weaved in, though I’d say it’s primarily a comedy and I don’t want to write any spoilers here. I really enjoyed it and will definitely read it again in future, hopefully before a third entry in the series.”

A Tribute to Grandpa
For all of the humour and fantasy that is contained in my Nether-Staining novels, it is a real privilege to be able to work on bringing the memoirs of my Grandpa, Albert Edward Johns, to the public domain.
Compiling these memoirs, with pictures, into a format that might be of interest to the public, has been a great challenge which has been embraced not only by myself, but also by my Dad and brother too. All have contributed and worked together from Albert’s own written words, a tape recording of a lecture, various newspaper articles, photographs and our own memories.
Albert died in 2004 and it took a long time before I read his memoirs, and if I hadn’t already published other works I doubt it would’ve entered my head…except I realised that he had an interesting story to tell, and it seemed a fitting tribute and legacy to a man who had a gift of making people laugh to bring the various sources together into one volume.
We (my Dad, brother and I) hope that if you have any interest in the Second World War, Merchant Navy, Pantomime, Theatre or the 1920s/1930s depression-era, that this small memoir may be of interest to you – because it certainly makes you realise just how lucky many of us are to be alive today.
Look out for Theatre of Life being released on Amazon on 2nd September in both e-book and paperback formats.
