Tea Meditation

Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis on which the world earth revolves—slowly, evenly, without rushing toward the future. Live the actual moment. Only this moment is life.—Thich Naht Hanh

During Saturday’s Virtual Retreat, one of our participants mentioned her morning tea making and sipping as a tranquility ritual and, as she described it, the above quote came to mind.

Here’s a video of Thich Naht Hanh describing the practice to Oprah and another of his quotes:

You must be completely awake in the present to enjoy the tea.

Only in the awareness of the present, can your hands feel the pleasant warmth of the cup.

Only in the present, can you savor the aroma, taste the sweetness, appreciate the delicacy.

If you are ruminating about the past, or worrying about the

future, you will completely miss the experience of enjoying the cup of tea.

You will look down at the cup, and the tea will be gone. Life is like that.

If you are not fully present, you will look around and it will be gone.

You will have missed the feel, the aroma, the delicacy and beauty of life.

It will seem to be speeding past you. The past is finished.

Learn from it and let it go.

The future is not even here yet. Plan for it, but do not waste your time worrying about it.

Worrying is worthless.

When you stop ruminating about what has already happened, when

you stop worrying about what might never happen, then you will be in the present moment.

Then you will begin to experience joy in life.

Tea sipping has been a daily habit of mine for years. I even travel with favorite tea bags to avoid those awkward “we only have Lipton black tea” moments and tote a tea spoon infuser with loose leaf green tea sprinkled with roses from Paris to the office.

As I sit with therapy clients, I often have a cup within reach and a few clients said they chose me as a therapist because of the mention of tea in my . There is comfort in holding the warm mug, smelling the aroma, and tasting the infusion—especially during therapy.

I often encourage holding a tea mug and savoring tea to clients in need of a comfort prop in anxiety-filled environments. It can have a calming effect, gives us something to do with our hands, and encourages slowing down.

Earlier today I met with a friend over a pot of jasmine tea to practice brush hand lettering. Now, I’m off to teach a two-hour Writing Lab at Tranquil Space/YogaWorks and plan to have a mug in hand during the process. Tea is comfort and joy all rolled into one.

Thich Naht Hanh’s quotes remind how we can use an everyday ritual such as tea sipping to connect with the present moment. Sip tea. Slow down. Be present. Savor. This is tea. This is life. Bisous. x

Spring Virtual Retreat Peek

And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to bloom.—Anais Nin

Saturday I hosted the first of two half-day virtual retreats (save the date: October 20 is our next one).

We streamed from my tiny Pink Palace with a live (shown above) and a virtual audience. Considering I live with four black furbabies and have white furniture, I spent all of Friday turning my home and garden into a workshop space.

Tim baked vegan cupcakes, made protein balls and kale chips. I washed curtains and slipcovers, planted violas, ranunculus, and daffodils (see pups below enjoying it during the retreat), and hid all of my non-essentials (paperwork, jars of markers, files). Although it’s a lot of work to adjust a small space to accommodate a group, it always feels good to see the open space. I may just keep those items hidden much longer!

The retreat began with me spilling a full water bottle onto my lap and sweet Tim bringing a towel to soak it up as I just kept going—wet seat and all! Nothing like being live and forced to move forward despite the circumstances. In truth, it’s a great reminder in life.

Programming  centered around the theme of blooming into spring and included a seated yoga flow, creating in our art journals, practicing mindfulness, and spending time in reflection.

I also shared tips to infuse mindfulness, yoga, and creativity into daily life and focused on providing a three-hour experience to nurture virtual and in-person attendees’ inner artists.

One participant shared, “When I closed the page yesterday at the end, I felt so refreshed and relaxed after the retreat and full of energy.” That made me smile. It’s so nice to hear that your work has made a difference to even one person.

Below are photos snapped and shared during the event using #virtualretreat. Aren’t they darling?!

The retreat is now available for purchase and comes with a 30-page Playbook, TranquiliT discount code, and a three-hour video for you to retreat at your own pace. It’s $59 through April 21 and then goes up to $69.

As always, a portion of all proceeds benefit Pigs & Pugs Project—assisting pug rescues and pig sanctuaries across the US. Thank you for your support in person, virtually, and in spirit. It means so much and I LOVED being with you! Bisous. x

Virtual Retreat TOMORROW

And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.—Anaïs Nin

Imagine three hours devoted to self-care and personal growth without having to leave the comfort of your own home. This is an opportunity to take your inner artist on an extended date.

Tomorrow we’re broadcasting the Spring Virtual Retreat from the Pink Palace (my tiny DC condo) with a live audience from noon-3pm ET and you’re invited!

This Virtual Retreat is a NEW mini-retreat focused on awakening from winter’s hibernation and blooming into spring.

This 3-hour LIVE adventure includes:

opening and closing gatherings
seated yoga for all levels
mindfulness tools for everyday life
creative play in our journals
a colorful PDF playbook filled with tips, tools, recipes, and more coming 4/13
a jazzy playlist
a 25% off TranquiliT discount code
a private virtual retreat Facebook group
an easy phone or video connection via Zoom
a recording of the event to retreat as often as you’d like
and more!

Slow down, shake up your Saturday routine, learn new skills, and connect with like-hearted ladies. Return with what’s most meaningful to you this spring. Peruse FAQs, testimonials, and YOUR former retreat photos.

If you can’t join us live or will miss some of it, you’ll receive the replay within 48 hours.

As always, a portion of all proceeds benefits the work of Pigs & Pugs Project. Please let me know if you have any questions about the experience. We’d love to have you with us! Bisous. x

Here’s what previous participants had to say:

I can’t thank you enough for such a clearly thought out virtual retreat. It was such a blessing not to need to get dressed, drive to an airport, not have to put on make-up, and to be comfortable in my own home without distraction.

Participating has reminded me how good it feels to slow down and give myself the time to recharge. Feeling a new spark of creativity.

I have to say, being the introvert that I am and loving my quiet time, this was something I would do again and again. Being in my own familiar space, relaxed but at the same time connected with everyone. You thought of everything!

The hallmark of an enlightening retreat, presentation, email, or post are the moments a heart is touched, a thought is planted, or a direction changed. I realize that the virtual retreat was more powerful than I thought it would be. In fact, it’s helping me to change direction, well, actually, to reconnect to my core being.

Tranquilosophy: Making Me a Priority

Nourishing yourself in a way that helps you blossom in the direction you want to go is attainable, and you are worth the effort.—Deborah Day

For years I’ve sat with my journal and a pen to confess that I’m “not getting enough done,” “lagging behind,” or “out of focus.” It’s as if this storyline is on repeat in my head and, honestly, has been the past two decades.

While this isn’t a post about how I’ve sorted it out and no longer struggle with it (considering its continued presence is what inspired this post), I did want to share how I work to combat this storyline through making self-care a priority.

For Year of Tranquility I created a self-care practices checklist filled with 15 tools ranging from restful sleep, to mindful movement, to journaling, to creative play. Download your copy here. The idea is not to add more to-dos to our plates, but to reflect on whether we’re getting our basic needs met.

When I find myself out of sorts—rushing, snippy, discouraged—I turn to this list as a way to regroup and remind myself that unless I’m filling my own well, I can’t give as fully as I’d like to anyone else.

It’s Sunday before noon and I’m sitting at the table typing away while sipping a green smoothie and contemplating the projects on today’s plate. There’s a longing to go play and a reminder that I didn’t get through as many items yesterday as I’d hoped.

Who will win? Play time or work time. My hope is that it doesn’t have to be an either-or scenario.

It comes down to navigating this constant tug of war mindfully. Today I’ll hunker down for a bit with a few projects, then take space mid-afternoon to walk the pups, sit fireside, read for pleasure, and then return to prepare for the week ahead.

For years I operated under the assumption that I had to get it all down. Now I’m getting more comfortable with things being delayed, reevaluating whether I even want to keep something on my to-do list, and noticing those storylines as they creep up. Those darn storylines!

I try to remind myself that my well-being is a priority. If not, others around me suffer because I’m operating out of depletion and that’s not pretty. Ask Tim! Making me a priority isn’t selfish, it’s self-respect.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to finish my Morning Pages. May your Sunday be a beautiful blend of doing mixed with being and a releasing of outdated and unhelpful storylines. Bisous. x

Month in Review {Pics + Links}

Don’t compare her to sunshine and roses when she’s clearly orchids and moonlight.—Melody Lee

March in Review

Last month included a snowstorm mixed with a few 70-degree days. Nature’s flux has been similar to my moods. Numerous ups and downs blended with many beautiful, mundane moments in between.

As you’ll see in the above image, there was lots of flora! From having a raised bed garden planted in the backyard, to seeing the Orchid Extravaganza at Longwood Gardens, to attending Rooting DC where we learned about seeds and soil, to picking up microgreens at the farmers’ market, to receiving a bouquet of mini pink roses from a thoughtful friend.

The month began with the film screening of The Last Pig on National Pig Day (see upper right image of me with Charlotte the pretty pink pig), the spring TranquiliT shoot the next day, and then the release  of Module 3 {Style + Beauty} for Year of Tranquility. There was a poetry writing class, a brush hand lettering class, a matinee viewing of Phantom Thread with a girlfriend, getting rear ended on a country road, finding the perfect farmette only to discover it was in a designated flood plain, the finding of a mammary tumor and biopsy for Belle Starr, spending two days at the Psychotherapy Networker conference, plus hosting a 7-day detox including a one-hour kickoff,  TranquiliT show + tell, a one-hour TDJ Live, and a three-hour Urban Retreat at Tranquil Space/YogaWorks.

There was weekly collaboration with therapy clients, another photo shoot to showcase TranquiliT in various settings (see lower left image of me with dogs in my “uniform” of 2in1 fitted, capri leggings + duster above), ballet classes, morning baths and Morning Pages, and the completion of my six-month Applied Positive Psychology Certificate Program (I’m giving my final presentation in the lower right image above—woo hoo!).

Watch for a podcast forthcoming about the Positive Psychology program experience and if you’re interested in joining the program for $150 off, use code kimberlyw22 and they’ll donate 5% to Pigs & Pugs Project!

Needless to say, it was a full and fluctuating month. As I turn my sights toward April, I’m excited about a fresh start. I’ve penned my April dreams onto an image of a woman on a bike with a basket full of veggies and secured it with gold chevron washi tape into my planner. I’m ready for what this month holds as I remember that fluctuations, change, challenge, and growth = the natural flow of this journey called life. Bisous. x
