Week in Review

Hello from the foggy woods of West Virginia. We headed out of DC late last night to handle a few things at Tim’s cabin and take down his Christmas tree (here’s how not to be sad when doing it). Although I haven’t moved from bed, so it looks like it may be a mini Bed Day.

The first full week in 2016 was filled with adventure and action, hence my mini spontaneous retreat today. Tim and I gallivanted around downtown Manhattan for four days with friends from Montreal—lots of yoga, bookstores, vegan cafes, sweet treats, lively conversation, many cups of tea, vintage shops. I came home with two new books: Pen on Fire and Good Prose. Reading, writing, and watching the passing landscape on the train ride up and back from New York City was a highlight.

Upon return to DC, I headed straight to Tranquil Space to teach my Monday Mindfulness class and the rest of the week flowed as usual—clients at The Women’s Center, meetings, veg chili, and green juices. Thursday began by treating my team of studio directors to brunch at Founding Farmers and ended by hosting the live New Year, New You Seasonal Podcast and announcing the new Virtual Retreat. Oh, and holding the new 52 Weeks of Tranquility Journals in my hand!

Friday I interviewed Gene Baur of Farm Sanctuary for an upcoming Tranquility du Jour podcast (you’ll LOVE him), met with my writing coach, signed and shipped books complete with hand-packed goodies (hello scented tea light, lavender tea, postcard, and gold paperclip), and had meetings at the studio.

It was a lovely launch into 2016 despite mourning that the holidays passed much too quickly (anyone else?). I never got fully into the holiday spirit and then they were over. My intention is to give myself space to consciously create 2016 dreams and I’ll be sharing them here, in Love Notes, and on the podcast shortly. Since studies show we’re more apt to make dreams reality when we write them *and* share them, I like to do all I can to set myself up for success to bring  them to life.

Wishing you a restful weekend surrounded by your favorite things.

Week in Review

Happy 2016! I’m sitting on a train headed north for a Jivamukti yogathon. It’s my annual new year’s pilgrimage to New York City to practice with Sharon Gannon and David Life, eat heaps of vegan food, and reconnect with a dear friend, Jennifer, from Montreal (who I met at a month-long Jivamukti training in 2007).

At my feet are two gold pleather bags stuffed with books, gifts, toiletries, tea, and clothing for the next four days. Black TranquiliT leggings, tunics, and fitted 2in1 tops will transition perfectly from the studio to the street, where we plan to help Jennifer welcome her 40th. I’ve chosen the window seat and have grand plans of daydreaming while watching the passing landscape after I finish this post.

I hope your transition from 2015 to 2016 was peaceful. Personally, I only made it to 11:40 pm with Anderson Cooper and then couldn’t keep my eyes open. So, 2016 was properly welcomed over a flaky croissant after this morning’s Mookie walk.

This week I finished and sent 52 Weeks of Tranquility Journal to print (ships mid-January), watched Trainwreck (sooo funny), learned that Guns n’ Roses are reuniting (anyone else a fan from the 90s?), uploaded three of my books to Kindle (Tranquility du Jour Anthology, Tranquilologie, 52 Weeks of Tranquility Journal), taught a three-hour yoga + mindfulness workshop at Tranquil Space, walked in the woods, read fireside, got my hair and nails did, met with therapy clients, chatted strategy, released my Year in Review, asked for your vote on TranquiliT’s spring colors (announcing colors + giveaway winners this month), released week 52 of 52 Weeks of Tranquility (woo-hoo!), uploaded 52 Weeks of Tranquility Journal to Amazon, savored soaks in the tub with sweet almond oil, and dreamed about 2016.

My wish is that we find space over the next few days to reflect on what we want more of and less of in the new year.  And, with that knowledge, that we make room for the more while trimming the less. It’s a simple recipe for satisfaction, productivity, and happiness. Essentialism at its finest.

Here’s to 2016 (picture a raised flute of bubbly with an organza bow tied around the stem). x

Tranquilosophy: Reflect

week 52

Week 52: Reflect

The end of the year. Another completed chapter. Let’s tie a ceremonial bow around it and honor your evolution—highlights, lessons learned, struggles, dreams, experiences. Each of these played a role in your year’s unfurling.

To jolt memories, set aside time to flip through places you kept notes and dates, such as your Daybook, planner, online calendar, and journal. Scroll through your photos for visual cues. Pull out cards, ticket stubs, conference swag, and/or exhibit brochures (I keep these items in a shoe box wrapped in pretty paper labeled “memories”). Collect any mementos you may have tucked away from this year and pile it on your kitchen table.

According to Sarah Susanka, author of The Not So Big Life: Making Room for What Really Matters (Tranquility du Jour podcast #181), “The end-of-year review process is very similar to sowing seeds. When you plant a garden, you don’t sit and stare at the seeds until they sprout. You know that some will germinate and some will not, but it is not up to you to make them grow. All you can do is set the conditions for their growth with good soil, adequate water, and the right amount of sun. And that’s what this exercise does—and while you are sowing seeds during this period, you can be enjoying the fruits of the previous year’s harvest at the same time.”

Here are a few questions to help you start the process . . .

Week in Review

I’m sitting on the couch facing our Blue Spruce Christmas tree covered in multi-colored twinkle lights and silver, blue, and white ornaments. Mookie’s curled up next to me under a blanket snoring. Jackson’s cleaning himself next to Tim on the foldout bed strategically stationed in front of the fire.

Despite working all morning, I plan to put this laptop aside to do some old-fashioned things like read a real book and write with a pen and paper all afternoon.

This week swept through like a fast-moving current. I worked with clients, taught classes, finished watching Making a Murderer, saw The Big Short, wrapped and opened presents, packed and shipped products, edited 52 Weeks of Tranquility Journal essays and design, picked up peonies, struggled with headaches and bellyaches, savored reflexology, wrote additional pieces for the 52 Weeks of Tranquility Journal, volunteered at Hospice, practiced yoga, and had in-person and online meetings.

Now it’s time to turn attention to tying a bow around 2015. I give lots of tips in next week’s *final* 52 Weeks of Tranquility essay hitting inboxes on Monday. To receive it, sign up for the weekly Love Notes.

Wishing you a beautiful final week of the year. May it be filled with deep breaths, leftover holiday cookies, and twinkle lights.
