Tranquilosophy: Be Your Own Valentine
sweet rescued piglet + kitten love
To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.
—Oscar Wilde
With Valentine’s Day around the corner, here are a few ways to practice being your very own valentine. No date or new dress needed.
1. Note what is working in your life right now. Take a moment to pen a list. Clean water, heat, clothing, good friend, partner, pet, income, shelter, health, energy, etc.
2. Go for a walk or bike ride. Take a yoga class. Move your body.
3. Stay hydrated. Tote your water bottle everywhere and strive for eight 8-oz glasses daily. Start your day with hot water and lemon to detoxify.
4. Get eight hours of sleep. Try earplugs, an eye mask, and soft sheets in a cool room.
5. Go light on processed foods. I know, it’s Girl Scout cookie season, but seek out fresh fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. And then savor a Thin Mint, or two!
6. Create space. When we’re scheduled from sun up past sun down even with things we love, it takes a toll. Interject moments of unscheduled time to daydream, nap, be spontaneous, and play.
7. Use apps like Headspace, Calm, and Mindfulness to track your meditation practice. Sit for 10 minutes and do nothing. Yes, nothing. Watch this Ted Talk for inspiration.
8. Make a list of things you like about yourself. Pretty eyes, kind heart, sense of humor, organized, etc.
This Sunday, do something sweet just for you. Get a mani. Dress up and take yourself out to tea. Write yourself a love letter. Read a book cover to cover. Stay in bed. Sip something yummy—hot cocoa with vegan marshmallows, a cuppa tea, bubbly. Treat yourself to brunch. Go for a stroll with no plan. Buy yourself flowers. Savor dark chocolate.
Poet Audre Lorde said, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”
Be your own valentine this holiday. Let this be a lifelong romance like no other. Bisous. x

Week in Review {Pics + Links}

Week in Review
Bonjour and welcome to this brand new month. February is a sweet wintery nugget dripping with conversation heart candy, chocolate, and romance. With or without a partner, consider having a bit of your own romance in the form of deep self-care.
If you haven’t taken a moment to pen your February goals, I encourage you to spend a few minutes with your Daybook, washi tape, ephemera, markers, and your dreams. What are you hoping to bring forth? For me, as you’ll see above, it’s a continuation of how I want to live, show up, and create.
Last weekend we headed to Baltimore for Saturday and Sunday night Garth Brooks shows. I missed him Monday night as I was beginning to get used to having a nightly concert. The good news? We just booked tickets for Raleigh and Vegas! Poor, poor Tim.
To call his performance a concert doesn’t do it justice. It’s a full-on experience. From the drunken man in front of us ripping off his shirt and twirling it like a lasso to “Shameless,” to Garth’s so-called “housekeeping” where he takes spontaneous requests from the audience during the encore, to his unending energy, to the abundance of cowboy boots and hats, to the gratitude he shows his fans and crew, to his Oklahoman roots. I’m mesmerized from start to finish.
Tim and I are on a calorie-counting kick and tracking our food through Lose It. I’ve got a few pounds of sugar I’d love to shed (darn those Thin Mints) and this app helps keep me it in check. Is the dark chocolate peanut butter cup worth it? Often, yes! Either way, it’s helpful to have the accountability and I love putting in my random bits of unplanned exercise—biking or walking to work, walking Mookie, dancing to Garth.
Last week I hosted a Writing Lab and took the group through prompts for two hours. Here are a few of them: pen a journal entry 10 years in the future, write about a time you were recently in public from the point of view of a stranger, write an autobiography in 10 minutes, list 25 books you could write. If any of these resonate, try them out and see what unfolds.
Watch for a new podcast and Love Note coming your way early next week. I’ll be announcing my upcoming Periscope broadcast unveiling TranquiliT‘s new spring colors and designs, releasing a podcast on the writing habit, and sharing my top tips for setting up a creative space.
Wishing you a delightful weekend. May it be filled with a flaky croissant, a vulnerable moment, and a warm cuppa tea. x

Tranquilosophy: My 10 Daily Tranquility Tips
Each morning offers the opportunity to begin again. The new day. A fresh start.
We may wake up refreshed, content, and healthy. Surrounded by people, pets, and things we love. Excited about all we have planned.
Or we may wake up feeling pooped despite eight hours of sleep, concerned about the 15-hour day ahead, or uninspired about our to-do list.
Then I’m better prepared to handle the random curve balls life throws my way—a drunken man destroying the studio’s flower pots, a nasty response from an AirBnB host, no steel cut oats at Safeway, caught in a downpour sans umbrella, inability to walk without hobbling (due to overdancing at Garth Brooks’ two concerts last weekend). Yep, this all happened within a 24-hour stretch earlier this week.
That’s why I fill my days with the ten tips below. I feel stronger mentally, physically, and emotionally. I’m in touch with the big picture. My belly is content. Energy is steady. And I smell divine.
10 Daily Tranquility Tips
1. Sip hot water with lemon
2. Spend a few minutes in meditation
3. Move: yoga, walking, biking
4. Enjoy a green smoothie or juice plus heaps of whole foods
5. Write in my journal
6. Review my Tranquility du Jour Daybook‘s week’s intention, month’s and year’s dreams
7. Sip a pot of green Tranquility Tea
8. Layer myself in TranquiliT
9. Spritz Tranquillité parfum
10. Read inspiring texts that help me grow
What are your daily tranquility tips? x

Week in Review
Bonjour from snowy DC. The fluffy white flakes began falling around 1pm yesterday when I was at Calabash Tea & Tonic writing. I quickly finished my jasmine rose tea and vegan apple zucchini bread, gathered my supplies, layered up, and biked home with a big grin.
Snowstorms seem to bring out our inner child. Visions of snow angels, sledding, and days off flow freely.
This week’s photos show the gamut of climates: from windy and warm Florida beaches, to one of the biggest snowstorms in DC’s history, and tiny moments in between.
Our overnight Amtrak train travel last weekend was a big experience packed into a tiny, tiny roomette. With approximately 18 hours each way, we had ample time to read, write, and gaze out the windows. Sleeping inside the closet-like room was seamless. The attendant came at our requested time to pull a bed down from the ceiling, adjust the two lower chairs into a bed, and, voilà, we were ready to slumber bunk bed style.
The train’s horn blows at each crossing so that and the constant vibration took a bit of getting used to, but two earplugs and a melatonin, and I was out. Highly recommend the adventure if you have the time!
Of course Garth Brooks didn’t disappoint. This Sunrise, Florida show was my favorite to date—the energy, the crowd, the balmy climate, the duck I met en route, the songs and their order (“Shameless” at the end felt like sprinkles on top), the journey there, our seats. His weekend in Baltimore was cancelled due to the blizzard, but rescheduled for next Sunday so I get to see him next Saturday night AND Sunday night. Yee-haw! Again, poor Tim.
Yesterday Tim and I celebrated our 12th year together. A whole dozen! To commemorate, I created the above collage, gifted him 5lbs of his favorite coffee, a trip to any farm sanctuary of his choice, and a dinner out at any resto of his choice. Then I added the clincher: another Garth concert. I’ve got my eye on Raleigh, North Carolina. #selfishgiftgiving
Thursday’s story about the cow who escaped the slaughterhouse and ran through the streets of Queens before being captured by police weighed heavily on me. I shed tears of joy when I learned last night that the owners gave him to Mike of Skylands Animal Sanctuary who spent the night outside the operation. Freddie is a lucky one, named after the lead singer of Queen, and will now lead a much-deserved life of leisure.
To those of you in the snowstorm’s way, I hope you stay safe and warm. Let’s savor this enchanted slow down, watch the snow fall, and reconnect with our childlike wonder.

Friends in Low Places
Concert #2 in Tulsa, OK with Mom and Pops
This weekend Tim and I boarded the Amtrak overnight train en route to Garth Brooks World Tour concert #4 in Sunrise, Florida. The best part? #5 and #6 happen over the next two weekends because he’s in Baltimore—a 40-minute ride from DC. Poor Tim.
Little did he know when he surprised me with a romantic getaway weekend for concert #1 in Jacksonville, Florida 1.5 years ago, that he’d be accompanying me to multiple shows. He’s more of a Nirvana man, so he describes Garth shows as “being on a different planet.”
For me, I reconnect to my patch of the planet. Oklahoma. You know, that sweet little state above Texas. It’s hard to explain why I’m such a fan, but I thought it would be fun to try to put it into words.
I grew up listening to hair metal and loving Axl Rose, became a fast fan of NWA and Too Short thanks to church camp, and fell in love with country music in college. When you attend the University of Oklahoma where boots and hats abound, country everything grows on you.
When I hear his music or even see his images online, my eyes well up and I’m not one who is quick to cry. It’s not a crush sort of thing (like Axl was), it’s a deep appreciation coupled with pride in a fellow Oklahoman whose done good. Real good.
It brings back memories of hearing his music in high school and someone telling me that he was the next big thing, listening to him on cassette tape while drinking Coors Light at the bottom of an empty swimming pool, and dancing to him at each party I attended during my four years of college.
My favorite song is “Shameless” and he’s played it at three of the four concerts. When it comes on, I melt and get even louder. I always apologize to the poor soul next to me explaining that “I’m just so excited.” It reminds me of Madonna’s “Crazy for You”—a song about love that just feels so good.
One of the first songs he sang Saturday night was “The River” (early 90s video of him performing). It’s one I’ve heard hundreds of times and bellow at the top of my lungs. Yet this time the words clicked in a new way and I was keenly aware of the lyrics:
You know a dream is like a river
Ever changin’ as it flows
And a dreamer’s just a vessel
That must follow where it goes
Trying to learn from what’s behind you
And never knowing what’s in store
Makes each day a constant battle
Just to stay between the shores…and
I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I’ll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry
Too many times we stand aside
And let the waters slip away
‘Til what we put off ’til tomorrow
Has now become today
So don’t you sit upon the shoreline
And say you’re satisfied
Choose to chance the rapids
And dare to dance the tide…yes
Chorus
There’s bound to be rough waters
And I know I’ll take some falls
But with the good Lord as my captain
I can make it through them all…yes
This song is balm for the soul. A poetic reminder to follow dreams despite the “rough waters”/challenges. Rather than “sit on the shoreline”/comfort zone and accept status quo, get out there and “chance the rapids and dare to dance the tide”/make things happen.
It’s so easy to push through day-to-day doing what I refer to as “rinse and repeat”: get up exhausted, go to work unsatisfied, watch TV to numb, go to bed exhausted.
What would it look like to chance the rapids and dare to dance the tide?
Of course “Friends in Low Places,” “Unanswered Prayers,” “The Dance,” and his many hits are crowd pleasers. Those of us who were fans from the 90s seem to know every word. It’s like his music is part of my DNA despite him taking years off and me moving on to Carla Bruni and Pink Martini.
When I hear or see him, I get nostalgic. Prairies. Long horns. Wide open space. Cowboys. Simplicity. Wheat fields. Lakes. Oil fields. Wichita Mountains. Buffalo. Sonic drive-ins. Route 66. Native American Pow Wows. Mesas. Thunderstorms. The musical.
When concert #4 ended Saturday night, I sulked. They go so darn fast. I turned to Tim and said, “Maybe we should get more tickets!”

In a few hours Tim and I will be hopping on a 19-hour train en route to Florida.
Fellow Oklahoman (we stick together) and country music icon Garth Brooks is playing this weekend in Sunrise, Florida and we jumped on the tickets last fall. Little did we know he’d be coming to Baltimore the following two weekends.
So, yes, we have tickets to those too. I get to see him three weeks in a row! Poor Tim.
This week the remaining orders of 52 Weeks of Tranquility Journal shipped (yay and BIG thanks for your support of this project), I worked with beautiful clients at The Women’s Center, released podcast #361, was interviewed on Victoria Moran’s podcast, taught mindfulness, released a Love Note (now bi-weekly), met with our amazing new Studio Director, got a mani, secured travel for a writing retreat with Natalie Goldberg, read more of Pen on Fire and Broken Open, and created space to write, soak in the tub, and sip green juices.
I began to feel a sense of settling into the new year. A bit more routine post-hollydaze, a few nice schedule shake ups, and more breathing room. I’m hopeful about 2016.
Earlier this week I shared my 2016 dreams. Setting aside time to crystallize them was therapeutic and I found it insightful that many are ideas on how I want to live, not something that I want to achieve per se.
Have you had a moment to reflect on how you want to show up this year? Have you chosen your word or theme? What is wanting attention right now? Share below or in our Facebook group.
Wishing you a weekend filled with moments to breathe deeply and love fully. x
