Viral texts about coronavirus lockdown were amplified by Chinese operatives, US officials say
Chinese operatives helped amplify a viral text message that falsely claimed President Trump was going to instate a nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19, reports The New York Times. US officials said the operatives were engaging in disinformation tactics similar to the ones Russia used in 2016.
The rumor, which gained traction around mid-March, claimed to be coming from someone close to the White House. It said Trump was doing to lock down the country to stop the spread of COVID-19. “Please be advised,” one version of the text message began. “Within 48 to 72 hours the President will evoke what is called the Stafford Act. Stock up on whatever you guys need to make sure you have a two week supply of everything. Please forward to your network.”
On March 15th, the White House National Security Council debunked the myth in a tweet, saying: “Text message rumors of a national #quarantine are FAKE. There is no national lockdown.”
While Chinese operatives did not create the message, intelligence agencies in the United States determined that they helped circulate it across different platforms, including on Facebook and over SMS. “Those efforts enabled the messages to catch the attention of enough people that they then spread on their own, with little need for further work by foreign agents,” the NYT reports.
In some cases, the agents created fake social media accounts to promote the message to people who were predisposed to believe it. Those people then sent it out to their networks, allowing the myth to gain traction.
The lockdown rumor isn’t the first coronavirus myth that has been linked to China. Zhao Lijian, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, spread misinformation that the coronavirus may not have originated in Wuhan, and was instead brought by the US military. “CDC was caught on the spot,” he tweeted on March 12th. “When did patient zero begin in US? How many people are infected? What are the names of the hospitals? It might be US army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan. Be transparent! Make public your data! US owe us an explanation!”
The Chinese Foreign Ministry denied that they had anything to do with the viral text message, telling the NYT, “The relevant statements are complete nonsense and not worth refuting.”

Until now, we have focused on adapting our environment. Now, we enter a new phase. We will venture to change ourselves through the advances in science and technology. This is perhaps of greater importance because it will affect the road we choose as human beings. Is it not worth our attention? Should we ignore what is coming?
This blog is about what is in development in all the fields capable of affecting our world as we know it. It is about the transformation that will arise as we further venture onto new grounds in science and technology. It is also about how we will see new products transform the way we are, work, play, enjoy life… and even spend time with our family and friends. Connectivity is already affecting many parts of our lives. Look at social networks and their influence around the planet. The internet has already changed the way we look for information, the way we shop… and so much more.
From what was upon a time science fiction, like driveless cars, to what is today science fact and reality, this blog watches what is coming our way. From a GPS locator in our phones to a chip implanted in our cats and dogs… and soon into ourselves, to a computer monitoring our health is not such a far fetched idea… And so, the NEWDAWN Blog attempts to keep track of it all. From what we call science fiction – when an original far out idea surfaced and when once upon a time that idea becomes science fact – and the reality of tomorrow.
After all, many of us have no knowledge of what is in the works behind closed doors… And so this blog is about all of that… And even envision one scenario for a way of life in the future with the NEWDAWN Saga!

In fact, this is meant to be a surprise! We are in the process of selecting those we love, those we believe worth knowing more about, those one should visit and the wonderful vintages that they provide us. The selection process is not easy. We really like a lot of them… But we have decided based on what we wish to feature that we should limit ourselves to 24.

Frankly, we decided to focus on our backyard, so to speak! So, we will begin with the California Wineries, but we definitely do not plan on stopping there. In fact, the landscape is so varied that we look forward to where this will take us.

Accordingly, the near future brings us to a technology driven society struggling for control against an environment that slowly unravels on a planet in turmoil.

This begins the series of volumes for the NEWDAWN Saga. We are wired to an A.I., DAINN, which oversees our physical well-being and monitors our health with preventive medicine and implants. DAINN also runs the infrastructure of an entire planet under competing agendas vying for power.

As a science fiction and fantasy series, Newdawn dives into the effects science and technology may have on our human species and the adjustment to an A.I. running society by the time we reach 2098.
Of course, the future perceived by me although bright in many ways, transforms us into a new species… One who is smarter, stronger, and faster. We even enjoy a new type of longevity without illnesses. As an author and futurist, I draw many parallels with our current challenges and evolution. In fact, these take into account the understanding that our choices today will dictate what we encounter tomorrow. Indeed, until now we have changed our environment to be more convenient for us. But now, for the first time in our evolution, we are embarking on a journey where we will begin changing ourselves for the age of the machine. It is inevitable, if we are to keep up with science and technology and where the advances we make today in these fields take us.

NEWDAWN Insights An Interview with Dan Salem and author/creator Dominique Luchart
1 – Tell us about your background, professionally and personally, and what excites you most about the work you’re doing.
Newdawn is a bridge between today and tomorrow and with my advertising experience, production background and my JD degree, I get to exercise these various facets in the creative and writing process I love… As a futurist and author, I look over the horizon to watch the shape of things to come. This process is a fascinating thing for me. The ties between our world today and what might be tomorrow. We shape our future every day with every actions we take. It is inspiring if we think about it. Exploring the possibilities of that world, and creating scenarios, even if some are far fetched and others not so much, in order to pave a better world for the next generation is incredibly powerful. Science fiction/science facts help shape that future because what we imagine is the seeds of our reality.
2 – What make Newdawn special? How does it stand out from/compare to popular sci-fi universes?
In a way, Newdawn is a bridge between today and tomorrow.
It sets the paths for a different way of life. A life that with the advent of A.I. is already here. This is so whether we see the transformation at this time or not. Artificial Intelligence is transforming the global landscape of what we know. It sets a different infrastructure for our world, creating a new methodology for everything it touches. And it does touch on everything or soon will… The ramifications are widespread. The influence, while remaining yet invisible, exist today… only we are yet to see its full impact.
So, Newdawn brings some of the possibilities into focus.
It addresses some of the issues we will face. I brings our humanity into questions. It establishes a landscape for choices, for unless we become aware of the changes, we cannot affect them. Nothing can be worse than to wake up one day in a world no longer of our own making. We must remain the leaders of our destiny as human beings.
A.I. will transcend this notion in many ways. So, it is imperative that we maintain a grip on how this technology will be used for the betterment of mankind. It does not stop with A.I… as we move ahead, science, technology and innovation play a keen role in that landscape. Accordingly we will face many issues, practical and ethical ones. But Newdawn is also the basis of great storytelling with an entertaining world building component that sets the stage for powerful drama, and this is the other fun part of a project like Newdawn.
3 – How did you first get into science fiction? What was your inspiration for the world of Newdawn?
I grew up reading, and a lot of that reading was science fiction based. It shaped the way I look at the world. The ability to be within a sphere where there is no limit to where we can go and do as people, because of our imagination, is an awesome capability of the human brain.
Observing where the new frontiers of science and technology are taking us, is part of the inspiration for Newdawn. Of course, there is a grain of fantasy in the story as well. This is where my own heart goes, triggered by some of the values I hold dear. In that environment, the constraints imposed by rules made by others no longer exist. In fact, these rules, unlike what we know in real life, no longer matter. They can easily be changed, shaped, controlled or simply discarded. They can evolve with each page of the novel, so long as the right set up exist. As human beings, we are not just one thing. We indeed have many facets and our world is filled with nuances. We can and should explore as possibilities under different scenarios. This is the fascinating part of my work.
4 – What is the project (other than Newdawn) you are most proud of?
Life is possibly my most serious project, growing as an individual and learning every day, adapting, dreaming and caring for the people I love. This is probably not the answer you were looking for… But as we grow, we learn. Work is work and there are a lot of projects I have enjoyed in the course of my career, but living in the right way is possibly the most rewarding of them all.
5 – Do you have a mentor, or person you aspire to be like?
There are many great people that I learn from every day, in business and in my personal life. Mentors are part of our life journey, and they happen to be there when we need them. There are no coincidences. They come into our lives based on the different phases we go through as we grow. I have enjoyed the privileges of knowing some of the best coaches, and be inspired by great minds and those I have not met, I get to know through their books…
Elon Musk is high on my list in terms of his work, philosophy and the way he approaches life. So is Sir Richard Bronson. But the work of Reed Hasting is also one to be watched for the transformation he impacted with digital streaming… Newdawn can certainly build upon a similar approach, although we have developed a business model of our own that is suited to our goals and niche. Our playground landscape is much smaller. They are all great leaders with their own style and approach.
6 – What’s it like working internationally, as opposed to in Los Angeles?
I love working in Europe. There is a different sensibility in the way people get involved in a project and usually, it is based on relationships and a longer term approach. This proves often to be a good thing. On the other hand, things do not necessarily move as fast as in the US and since I love it here, it’s great to be able to do both.
7 – Briefly describe the evolution of the world of Newdawn, books, product line, video series, etc. Where did it start and where is it going?
Newdawn is about building a community, the tribe of tomorrow and for tomorrow. It is about creating the lifestyles of the future. Building awareness about what is coming as the global digital landscape is transforming the way we work and interact with each other.
The potential we possess to shape a better world exist in ourselves, and we can harness our individual powers to safeguard our environment and the values we hold dear for the betterment of humankind. Science and technology open the way to great things, but there is danger in how we progress in our choices. The solutions we devise must be carefully crafted.
This is what Newdawn is all about. This takes many shapes, from being caretakers of our planet by producing products that are eco friendly and natural, to creating compelling content and programming that build awareness, hope, and entertain to engage the worldwide audience.
8 – What’s your favorite hobby?
I have many because I like to do many things. Otherwise, I would get bored easily, if I were to do the same thing over and over again. I like to experience new things. So, while reading is my constant, I enjoy hiking. Anything that gets me outdoor and moving about is always a good thing.
9 – What are you most passionate about?
Probably Newdawn… And Nature is A big Part of It.
But my love for animals and my wish to protect them comes up high on my list. It is our responsibility to do so since we are at the top of the food chain. I have adopted many pets and rescued others, bot cats and dogs. But our wildlife is at risk and so are our oceans, one of our most important assets. We are irreversibly damaging it and not enough is done to reverse that although many organizations work tirelessly to change that. These are worthy causes, but there are so many others in need of support. This is one of the reasons, we plan on incorporating some of these in our programs as we grow. We want to give back in different ways. This is in fact one of the differentiating factors we wish to make clear as part of Newdawn’s goals for the future.
10 – Who is your favorite character in the world of Newdawn?
Tesh… She is a dream character, strong, powerful, fearless, adventurous and yet so vulnerable. Her heart makes her conflicted in many ways, yet like in all of us, we get used to certain things and it is hard to break the mold. There are other great characters though. I love all of them because they bring growth into the world of Newdawn and for that, I am grateful to them. They make the Newdawn journey worthwhile, surprising and never boring.

Brace yourself… The future is here as Artificial Intelligence and machine learning transform the global digital landscape… although we may not yet see its impact. Do you ever wonder what is coming? I know I do. Do you worry about how you will maneuver this changing world we live in? I have indeed, as the ground shifts under our very feet. Do you wonder what place you will take in this new landscape and how you will maintain a lead to keep thriving as an individual in business? I am focused on the same issues, so let me share with you what I have grasped about tomorrow.
Change is here now…
The global digital landscape today is the realm where change moves unabashedly fast, unrestrained due to science, technology and innovation shaping the way to a new way of life for all of us. In this new era where machines will undoubtedly affect how we live our lives and do business, competing to achieve success will require new initiatives. The future is here now, albeit still invisible in the new processes it weaves.
The big question for all of us remains can we stay relevant, as the fabric upon which we have built our businesses shifts under our very feet? Tomorrow Today is not an idle saying for as we speak, the web of transformation is taking place.
Branding Does Not Work Like It Used To…
How can your brand be heard or seen and followed because it resonates with your audience? The amount of data and information to process nowadays is staggering. Each of us faces this same issue. To compete, we can only do so with a grasp about where technology is taking us. And this path is far from clear for big or small companies. Artificial Intelligence and machine learning will impact how data and information is processed by all of us. The tools, while not readily available to the majority of us will shape this transformation. We already live the future because the underlying infrastructure on which we have built our lives has shifted…
The Demand For Digital Assets Is Growing
Standing apart from the competition and impacting fans with our messages will require digital assets on an ongoing basis. This will demand more and more of our time for the development of these assets, while there will exist more content to compete against. This even more so than what we face today. Some of this content will be automated to the point where unless we have access, we will lose our position and eventually be lost in a faceless crowd.
The Tools In The Road Ahead
Automation access, plug ins, robots, will deal with some of these issues. Our success will depend on what we use and how it affects our customers. The experience of the future for our fan base will continue to expand into new connectivity and experiential environments. The draw back is that all of this is costly and therefore less achievable for the small businesses.
Partnerships To Gain Access To New Networks
Momentum can therefore be gained by working within networks to access more reach. This translates into the necessity to form partnerships. These can be small, so long as it takes us from one realm of influence to another. They can also take different forms and go across different industries, so long as they relate to providing value to our customers.
Rallying our customers around our products will test our creativity. This is the one sphere where we maintain our advantage in the future. Human creativity will indeed give us an edge as we compete in a world run by machines.
Artificial Intelligence Impacting Content Strategy
Possessing a content strategy no matter our brand is key. Building one that holds the tide of time requires the use of a new methodology based on automation and multiple platforms. Even this will demand constant updates. Soon analytics will change with the advent of A.I. affecting content strategy. Still, by knowing more about our customers, understanding their habits and preferences, will allow us to create better and more on target content strategies.
Accessibility Remains A Factor
Some of this evolution is happening today, but we have not yet faced the onslaught of this transformation. For most of us, A.I. is not readily accessible, and yet we must contend with this reality. So, how can we generate the loyalty that guarantees that tomorrow, we will still have a fan base? Building our own authentic voice, based on our own stories and doing so outside the main stream could very well be the only way the small companies can maintain a presence in the future.
These are all questions we struggle with every day. These are the challenges we face, as we fight for a piece of the marketplace against competitors that may have already cornered our field of dreams: the niche or market segment we seek to convert and make our very own.
Analytics And Machine Learning Influencing Market Complexity
Most businesses today do not have a content strategy. In fact about 63% of the businesses out there face this challenge. Tying content strategy and business goals is part of achieving and maintaining customer reach and goes way beyond the development of an editorial calendar.
Marketing Constant
Measuring ROI by establishing key performance indicators is also part of the process. Personalizing your content following an audience segmentation road map is another piece of the equation. Re-purposing content and curating this content for various distribution channels will become more involved unless automation is used to facilitate these steps. As of now, incorporating more types of content will expand reach with various audience segments. This is something we can all do, although it does require more time.
Shift In The Global Digital Landscape Presents One Of Today’s Challenge
You are not alone in that fight. In fact, you rather keep a very good company for we are all in it together. This shift is underway and there is no stopping it. The only task ahead for all of us, if we do not wish to be obsolete in months from now, is to jump on board a speeding bullet train. Indeed, as things move exponentially faster, we move slower to the point of standing in place without realizing it.
