Mystery on Monday: Constructing Mysteries: Water Torture with Linda Lovely

How do the mundane mysteries of everyday life feed the mysteries we write? That's what author Linda Lovely ponders today. (And yes! she IS the Linda Lovely recently mentioned on NPR's All Things Considered - you'll have to ask her why!) ~ Sheila

In mid-August, family arrived on a Thursday for a four-day visit.
As usual, my husband and I hustled to vacuum, dust, and blow up an inflatable

Artsy Fartsy Friday - Art into Fiction, with Animals!

Jay, the prototype for Jay in my mysteries.

As I write this, I'm wrapping up the sequel to Drop Dead on Recall, my first Animals in Focus mystery, which will be out in October. Although the series is not art-centric, Janet MacPhail, my protagonist, is a photographer specializing in animals. She makes her living photographing pets for their owners, photographing

Writing on Wednesday - What I Did On My Writing Retreat

On Monday, I checked myself in. No, the walls weren't padded, and I have full use of my arms. I checked myself into a bed and breakfast a half-hour's drive north of where I live. The B&B at Mallard's Bay is a lovely place. Phoebe Hood, the owner, offers a "suite" that includes a bedroom, a sitting room, and a bathroom, and free run of the most of the rest of the place. Perfect place to hide

Mysterious Monday - On Desire, Failure, and Success

Back in March my fellow mystery author Shannon Baker wrote a blog post about the struggle to become a better writer. It it she quoted NPR commentator and very wise man Ira Glass. That got me thinking about the whole business of wanting to do things and sticking with them long enough to get really good. Although Baker and Glass were talking about writing and creative work, the concepts they

Artsy Fartsy Friday - Life in the Crafts Lane with Lois Winston

Today I'm delighted to welcome award-winning author, designer, and literary agent Lois Winston, who writes the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries series, among other things. Who knew crafts could be so dangerous? ~ Sheila

When my agent suggested to me several years ago that I try my hand at writing a crafting mystery, it seemed like a perfect fit. Here I was, a crafts designer by

Writing on Wednesday: Animals and Writing, Oh My!

Showing my lovely Calgary in
Open Jumpers, Lafayette, Indiana, 1970

On Monday I wrote about dog hair, which is a big part of my life. Dogs (and cats and horses and birds and other critters) are not only vital characters in my forthcoming Animals in Focus Mystery series, but also an important part of my larger life. I showed horses in my teens and twenties, and I’ve been active for two decades

Mysteries on Monday - Hair in My Inkjet, or, Truth in Mystery

Drop Dead on Recall will be out in less the two months, and when I tell people who know me they usually ask about animals in my books. Before I get to the questions themselves, let me tell you why they come up.

There’s the dog hair, for one thing. On my clothes, on the couch. A few minutes ago I blew some off the scanner bed of my ink jet. If I were a better housekeeper I might complain, but I

Artsy Fartsy Friday Runs Wild with Mustangs

On Wednesday I wrote about George Washington, who was an avid horseman and dog lover. Fitting traits as the symbolic father of a country in which many people have pets and most espouse a love of animals. For Artsy Fartsy Friday this week, I'm simply posting a few of my many photos of wild mustangs.

A year ago we were living in Reno, Nevada, and one of my favorite places to hike was the

Mysterious Monday - Must We Kill Someone?

I'm still on my August hiatus from blogging while I wrap up the second Animals in Focus mystery, sequel to Drop Dead on Recall, so this will be short. I've been thinking a lot of mysteries, in books and in our own lives. We've all run into the occasional mystery to solve, and for most of us, they don't involve murder or kidnapping or other really dastardly deeds. At least I hope not.

So why do
