The Bands of Mourning (Mistborn: The Alloy Era #3) by Brandon Sanderson: Book Review
The Bands of Mourning are the mythical metal minds owned by the Lord Ruler, said to grant anyone who wears them the powers that the Lord Ruler had at his command. Hardly anyone thinks they really exist. A kandra researcher has returned to Elendel with images that seem to depict the Bands, as well as writings in a language that no one can read. Waxillium Ladrian is recruited to travel south to the city of New Seran to investigate. Along the way he discovers hints that point to the true goals o...

Mental Health and Masculinity
Talking about mental health is hard, so I will begin with some statistics (from 2018):
In the UK, Men are three times more likely to die by suicide than womenMen aged 45-49 have the highest rate of suicides in the UK In Scotland, the suicide rate among 15-24 year-olds increased by 52.7% Data is from SamaritansThere are loads more statistics that you can look at if you want to know more, here.
I did a bit of digging and found over and over again that the statistics are always similar. Suicide rates in men are highe...

Be Your Own Inspiration
What keeps us going? What keeps us writing, painting, filming, knitting… What is it that makes us want to continue creating?
It’s a question I’ve been asking myself a lot recently. I turned twenty two last month and since then I’ve been trying to figure out what I’ve achieved. What had I done to be proud of?
I came up with a short list:
I got 9 GCSEs and three A-Levels I got a 2.1 BA in English and Creative WritingI’m engaged to a wonderful human and we’re planning the wedding for 2020.It might not be a long list but e...

Why You Need to Vote: 2019 Election
The news is rarely positive. I can understand many people taking time away from new sites, focusing on themselves and enjoying their lives. I do this myself, all the time! I check the news once or twice a week, but I make sure never to spend too much time on it unless there is something I want to read more about.
I’ll talk about distancing yourself away from the news in a future blog post.
For now, though, I want to talk about why you should vote this December.
I spent three years living i...
The Depressive Void of the First Draft
I have written a decent amount this month. It’s NaNoWriMo and for the first time I am joining in. It is not the 14th of November and I’m at 31,000 words.
It feels good to have written so much. I’ve been working on a story close to my heart. The characters are so vivid in my head and their stories make me laugh and cry. I love this story, and for the first time in my life I feel like it was written for me. By this I mean that I haven’t been thinking about publishing or agents or anything – ev...

An Update on TV Reviews
So, since CW’s Arrowverse started up again about 6 weeks ago, I have been writing reviews for Supergirl, Batwoman, The Flash, and Arrow.
The problem with writing reviews for each episode is that not all are great, and not all are terrible. Most are average and there isn’t much to talk about in them.
Because of this, I have decided to only write reviews on episodes that make me think. I want to write about something that interests me, and right now, shows like Supergirl and Batwoman are boring me a bi...

Supergirl – ‘Confidence Women’ – Season 5, Episode 6: TV Review
SPOILERS AHEAD
My Rating: 3/5
This was essentially a backstory episode, and as much as I enjoyed it, I’m not sure why we needed it. I liked how it explained Lena’s extreme reaction to Supergirl’s betrayal, but beyond that everything could have been explained through present-day dialogue.
My point is, this episode felt like a filler, liker the writers on the show were told to bulk out the telling of the story so it might last longer.
Let’s see what happens in the following weeks, but I might not do...

Shadows of Self (Mistborn: The Alloy Era #2) by Brandon Sanderson: Book Review
Shadows of Self shows Mistborn’s society evolving as technology and magic mix, the economy grows, democracy contends with corruption, and religion becomes a growing cultural force, with four faiths competing for converts.
This bustling, optimistic, but still shaky society now faces its first instance of terrorism, crimes intended to stir up labor strife and religious conflict. Wax and Wayne, assisted by the lovely, brilliant Marasi, must unravel the conspiracy before civil strife stops Scadrial’s prog...

The Flash – ‘Kiss Kiss Breach Breach’ – Season 6, Episode 5: TV Review
SPOILERS AHEAD
My Rating: 3/5
This wasn’t a bad episode. It was essentially a filler episode that gave some clues for the future of the season (the near future, that is). It was Cisco’s episode and he shone, he really did. The character is so close to many of our hearts so watching him best himself (that’s confusing if you’ve not watched the episode and ignored the spoiler warning!) was a joy.
I’m waiting for the next episode though. It felt like the writers of the show needed an episode this week b...
