Secret Heir (Dynasty #1) by MJ PrinceI received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Summary: Secret Heir focuses on Jazmine, a girl who grew up bouncing from foster home to foster home when her world turns upside down. She gets transported to Eden and learns that she is the Evenstar Dynasty heir - complete with superpowers. After a brief introductory ceremony with the other Seraph dynasty families (which establishes the Romeo/Juliet theme), Jazmine finds that everything in Eden isn’t as it seems.
Secret Heir’s incredible cover art, summary, and first few chapters are what really drew me in. Jazmine’s backstory on Earth was filled with the mystery and tenacity which usually hints at a good character development later on. And what’s more intriguing than being an orphan and then learning you have family and responsibility in an entirely different realm?
I loved the concept and description of Eden as well as the powers that each dynasty controlled. The fact that each Seraph dynasty had power over a specific element that made Eden and Earth function was a fun magical twist. And there were several characters whose development really hooked me (and I’m curious to see where they’ll go next!).
Unfortunately, the middle of the book dragged. The high school drama was predictable, and certain exciting pieces (e.g., Jazmine’s first duel) aren’t given as much depth as I wanted. Some of those moments felt abruptly chopped off.
That being said, the twist at the end of the book was completely unexpected. I’m hoping that the new developments will provide an exciting path for the plot and characters in the next book!
Thank you so much for the fun read, @mjprinceauthor!!

Secret Heir (Dynasty #1) by M.J Prince Book Review

ARC kindly provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
When I first started reading this book I did not expect myself to enjoy it as much as I did. It didn’t start off on the right foot with me but as I let myself be taken into the world of Eden, the world that the author M.J Prince created, I soon fell in love with the characters, setting and the whole luxury and richness that the world was created with.
I guess the real reason I loved this book was because it was like every single book was merged into one single fabulous novel. The luxury and beauty of the story reminded me of the A Court Of Thorns And Roses series by Sarah J Maas and the enemies to lovers romance reminded me of that of Pride And Prejudice . It was everything and I loved it so much.
The book is about a girl called Jazmine who feels as if she doesn’t belong. Not in her foster home or anywhere on Earth for that matter. Then after a shocking revelation, Jazmine discovers that she is the heir to the Evenstar dynasty, one of the seven dynasty’s of Eden. She needs to learn her place in her new world but it’s not easy when everyone is trying to make her life miserable. Especially the handsome Raphael St. Tristan, heir to the throne and the reigning sovereign St. Tristan dynasty who promises to break her and shatter her.
When the book started as I said, I was not sure if I would enjoy it. The first few pages were slow paced during the period of time Jazmine was on Earth as a waitress. But as soon as the magical world of Eden was revealed I suddenly became more interested and immersed.
One of the best parts of this book was how the author M.J Prince added new dimensions to each characters. I loved Jazmine. I love how she was so tough and didn’t let haters get to her. She had a hard life living in ten foster homes throughout her life and she had no family to care for her until she finds her long lost grandfather. The author, M.J Prince clearly shown that even though she is tough, she makes mistakes. Even the other characters seemed to have more than meets the eye making this a book to look out for.
I can’t wait for the sequel. My hands are itching to read it as soon as it’s released because I loved it that much. In the next book you can probably expect a shocking cliff-hanger (M.J Prince is extremely good at this as well) but I think that she could develop the world even more in the second book than she did in the first book. This series definitely has potential and I recommend this to any romance and fantasy lover out there.
ACTUAL RATING: 4.46 STARS

"I’m so sick of that same old love, that shit, it tears me up
I’m so sick of that same old..."
I’m so sick of that same old love, my body’s had enough
I’m so sick of that same old love, feels like I’ve blown apart
I’m so sick of that same old love, the kind that breaks your heart.”

Dynasty: Secret Heir Book Review

Author: M.J. Prince
Rating: 4/5
I generously received an advanced copy from the author in exchange for an honest review, and I’m so glad! The more I think about this book, the more interesting it becomes. Secret Heir follows Jazmine as she is thrown into a world of elemental magic called Eden, where Seraphs reign. Seraphs are like Gods, controlling the oceans, the winds, the earth and most importantly - day and night. However, as magical as this book is, there is a essence of teenage colloquialism similar to YA contemporary novels and I LOVED it.
A lot of this story takes place in a magical high school and I don’t think I’ve ever read a high school story so classic and yet so unique. Of course, the students have elemental powers, but besides that the characters create quite a relatable setting. Another thing so rarely seen in fantasy is representation of mental illness. The inclusion of mental illness played a large part in the story-building, especially when it came to revealing the backstories, and I really appreciate that. In addition, the fact that the main character is just in complete denial of her magical heritage is so funny because of the fact that it’s so accurate compared to most reactions from characters in similar situations. She just refused the possibility for as long as she could and, to be honest, that would be a more human reaction. All of these points make for a much more relatable story than most fantasies, and makes for a much more interesting read.
Also, PLOT TWISTS. I didn’t see the final plot twist coming from a mile away! And I was so mad that the book ended and I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.
However, I did have a couple of problems with this book, but all of them are more about the characters than anything else. I couldn’t stand the main love interest, he was over-possessive, stuck-up and infuriating (and not in a Jace Herondale way). This is completely a personal preference, but I feel like their relationship was quite unhealthy, or at least not what I would want in a relationship (again, this might just be me). As well as this, the narrator won’t stop telling us how attractive he is, and in the end I got a little fed up of her eyeing him so obsessively. However, I am excited to see where their relationship leads in the future.
Leading on from that, it is always said in this novel how beautiful and ethereal everyone is in Eden - and I understand that this is because they’re magical beings and all. But there was no diversity and I was a little put-out by how beautiful everyone was in the end! xD
Overall, I did really like this book. It was a very indulgent and luxurious - a fabulous read for after Christmas!
And another fab review of Secret Heir. Thank you!! <3 :D

Find out my thoughts on M.J. Prince’s book #secretheir here!
Goodreads | Amazon I have been provided with an Advanced Reader Copy by the author in exchange for an honest review. I found this book a really pleasant surprise. It’s not something I’d dive for but I was quickly absorbed by the beautiful and twisted world Prince has created. The plot drew me in straight away. Jazmine is a girl from Earth who is a member of a royal family on a planet she does not…
Another great review of Secret Heir. Thank you!!
