Flashback: The Fire

The idea for The Fire came to me after watching one of the shows I re-watch constantly. It’s America’s favorite comfort watch: Criminal Minds. There’s an episode where a family is trapped in their house, and the arsonist sets the fire and watches them burn. (You’ve probably guessed that calling this show a comfort show was sarcasm.)

Anyway, I got it in my mind a story about there being a survivor of a fire that takes their whole family. After that, it was not just a survivor but a child, and sh...

Ukraine

Doesn’t it always seem to begin with a megalomaniac’s quest for power and desire to have statues made in his likeness? If we go back in time and think about all the wars that have ever been, I wonder what the percentage would be. A man wants more land, more power, to claim something over another man, to take, to take, to take, and to make false claims and reinvent history along the way.

If you’ve read my blog on book banning or subscribed to my newsletter and heard me tell the story of how "Ar...

Character Descriptions

A while ago, someone commented that they liked how I don’t spend a lot of time describing my characters in my books because it’s like I said, “They look like this,” and I just don’t care to keep describing. They meant it as a good thing, and I’m paraphrasing, obviously, but it got me thinking about writing a blog post, so here it is.

There are many different approaches to description in writing. There are schools of thought on being incredibly descriptive, to put your readers there in the book ...

New Release: The Writing on the Wall

The Holidays are here!

I know... The real holiday season has just ended, and now it's time for hearts, and pinks and reds all over the place because Valentine's Day is right around the corner. (Reminder for those of us who need to buy gifts).

This book isn't centered around those hearts, though. It's about Weston White meeting someone right after being dumped and not expecting it to happen. It's about the silly gifts they get each other because they weren't ready for Valentine's Day at all. An...

Book Banning

I couldn’t sit idly by anymore. For the past several years, the world has been on fire, sometimes literally, and I’ve talked to people close to me about what I’m seeing. Some agree and understand. Others have tried to tell me that they know more because they’d lived longer and had experienced more as a result. There are things I haven’t commented on, choosing to sit on the sidelines because I wasn’t sure I’d add value.

I can’t do that anymore. I’ve watched my country change too much (some migh...

Standard Nicole Pyland Novel

I’ve mentioned this in a newsletter once or twice, but I have a personal goal to never have a “standard Nicole Pyland novel.”

That’s not to say there aren’t themes or similar elements in all my books or that I wouldn’t want someone to read a book I wrote and know that it’s mine without even seeing my name on the cover. Really, my goal is that every book I write is somehow just a little bit different than the ones that came before it.

I’m very lucky; I write fast. Many people have commented on...
