Day 1,670: Go See Solo

My message for the blog tonight is simple: GO SEE SOLO.

It’s not a perfect movie, but it just might be the best that these new Star Wars films have come up with to this point, and the Ho and I *genuinely* enjoyed it. I also hear that it’s projected to underperform, and we don’t want that to happen to goood movie, so go see it! Teach the studios that audience really do care about a well-made movie.

We went and saw that this morning. It kinda threw my whole day out of whack, unfortunately, whic...

2018 Movie #29: Solo: A Star Wars Story

Another year, another Star Wars movie. This time, it’s the backstory of our beloved Han. I must confess, I didn’t expect this movie to be all that good. Boy, was I wrong!

THE BLURB:

Young Han Solo finds adventure when he joins a gang of galactic smugglers, including a 196-year-old Wookie named Chewbacca. Indebted to the gangster Dryden Vos, the crew devises a daring plan to travel to the mining planet Kessel to steal a batch of valuable coaxium. In need of a fast ship, Solo meets Lando Calris...

Day 1,669:

Le sigh…

The Warriors might not have the magic this year. They lost again tonight, which puts them down 3-2 in the series. Now, granted, it’s not over. A 3-2 lead is not safe by any stretch of the imagination, even if it were the Warriors with that lead…but they’re just not playing well. They’re not sharp. No dominance. No adjustments.

I really think a very mediocre season has caught up with them. I really do. They say the regular season doesn’t matter…and sometimes it doesn’t. But *this* yea...

Day 1,668: Finding the Light

For whatever reason, today was a tough day. I had “floating anxiety” all day, and normally, that would mean I wouldn’t have done much work. I’d have stewed and waited for it to just go away…but not today…

Today, I sat down, went through my focusing regime, and I banged out 2,000 *excellent* words.

That was very, very satisfying.

I’m thinking about starting a series of blog posts…or maybe even a book…on how to develop a writing process. I definitely want to stick with this for a longer period...

Day 1,667: A Good Day

Today was a good day.

I wrote 2,000 words. I read for (over!) an hour. I did some bank-stuff work and had a conference call with our financial advisor. And then, because of all that, I got to watch sports ball in the night times.

Of course, the sports ball was frustrating

Day 1,666: Tell Your Sister

Tell your sister…you were right…

The Ho and I watched the despecialized Return of the Jedi tonight. You know, as an adult now, it’s undoubtedly the weakest of the three…but man, it still works for me. I know so much of that viewpoint is influenced by how old I was when I first watched it, and don’t get me wrong, there are definitely sequences that are clunky…but it still works.

I think all the stuff on Endor is fun. All the sneaking around, the chases, the battles, even the Ewoks. I think the...

2018 Movie #28: Cars 3

I enjoyed the first Cars well enough. It was definitely an off-movie for Pixar, in that it didn’t reduce me to a puddle of emotion, or teach me about life, childhood, and adulthood…but it was fine. The second Cars was not good. I don’t even remember what it was about. So, I went into this THIRD Cars movie (they gotta sell those toys, right?) with much, muuuuch trepidation…I was pleasantly surprised!

THE BLURB:

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast cars, the legendary Lighting McQueen...

2018 Movie #27: Baby Driver

What a pleasant surprise this movie was! I feel like their marketing campaign didn’t do enough to convey just how unique and inventive this movie really was…because it was DOPE.

THE BLURB:

Baby, a music-loving orphan also happens to be the prodigiously talented go-to getaway driver for heist mastermind Doc. With the perfect soundtrack picked out for each and every job, Baby ensures Doc’s violent, bank-robbing cronies – including Buddy, Bats and Darling – get in and out of Dodge before it’s to...

Day 1,664: The Contract

Every storyteller is offering a contract: they’re reaching out their hand, saying “come with me, I want to show you something.” They’re saying “trust me. Let me lead the way, follow me, and I *promise* I won’t let you down.”

I never forget someone who lives up to that promise, man. Ever. I don’t think any of us do. It is truly one of the purest and most powerful joys in life to be in the hands of a good storyteller.

Every minute I spend writing, I’m trying to live up to that contract.

I’m get...
