Day 4,087: Golf!

What is the greatest gift someone could give me?

Time. Which isn’t practical, but that’s the first thing I thought of: more time. I feel like that’s the one thing that actually isn’t possible, so therefore it would be the greatest gift.

Practically speaking? Hmm…really just anything that helps me do the things I love doing. The best gifts are a reflection of how well the other person knows and understands us. It’s not so much the gift/item itself as it is the gesture of “I know who you are...

Day 4,086: Squawking Continues

We’re five movies away from finishing Hitchcock. Wild. Tonight it was The Birds. It holds up in some ways, mostly in how influential it was on movies that followed. He did that back to back, in fact, with this one and Psycho. Pretty cool. But, yeah…home stretch, which is kinda wild. 53 movies (plus one extra because it was done in a second language with different actors). We’ll have watched em all!

A good day today! Got my work done. Writing was decent in the morning. Even ticked some stuff o...

Day 4,085: Time For Math

Do I “play” in my daily life? What says “play” to me?

I play constantly. Genuinely—Liz and I play games all the time. They mostly revolve around word/music games, where we make up songs or lyrics to existing songs. I guess it’s one, long improv game of yes-and.

I also play with my dogs all the time. Blanket monster with Joy, or fetch. The dogs keep me young for sure.

And I’d consider my writing “play,” absolutely. I’m playing make-believe whenever I write.

I’ve always considered myse...

Day 4,084: White Streaks

What are my biggest challenges?

Getting up in the morning is one of them. I’m decent at it, to be clear…but it is a CHALLENGE every. Single. Day. I’m not joking about that. It’s truly a challenge. That’s a weak point for me when it comes to resistance—if I don’t get up on time, I rarely, rarely, almost never get my writing done. It railroads my entire day. So, of course, that’s how resistance most often tries to get me.

That’s probably not the spirit of this question, but that’s a very rea...

Day 4,083: E.R.

Happy New Year!

It’s not midnight yet here on the west coast, but I’m going to bed, lol, so it’s an early well-wishes from me. I’m getting up on time tomorrow—a harbinger of the year I want, if you will. Kinda. Mostly, I just want the routine as quickly as I can get it. I’m happiest that way. Also, I get to watch a Wrexham game, so that’s a nice little carrot dangling for me.

Joy hauled us into the ER today. Liz was putting Teak Oil onto our vanity in the main bathroom to protect it and wh...

Day 4,082: Library Card

What relationships have a positive impact on me?

Certainly my wife, my partner in all things: Liz. We are unquestionably stronger together than we are apart. My dogs are what I think of next—my constant companions, the structure to every day, even those that don’t have any, especially those days. My family. My mom, my dad and my brother, they all have an enormously positive impact on me. And my friends. They keep me filled up. Going. Entertained and excited. Stimulated. Dreaming. My coworkers...

Day 4,081: Sweater Weather

The thing about writing over four thousand of these daily entries is that certain titles will end up being repeated. I’m sure this is one of them. It got coooolll tonight. Chilly out there. Coops is in his winter sweater, the blue and white one with the snowflakes on it and the high turtleneck. He’s so cute. Joy runs so hot and presses up against us so tight, she doesn’t ever need a sweater. She was BORN in the cool weather.

I played a little music today. Played a little Zelda. Woke up early ...

Day 4,080: Happy Pasta Day!

Happy Pasta Day to all who celebrate! Liz and I celebrate, that’s for damn sure…and boy did we celebrate. So, there’s this restaurant in LA now called Uovo—pretty sure they’ve been here for a while—and they have several locations. Well, I had a return to do for a pair of shoes that would take me all the way out to Pasadena, and Liz was like, “why don’t I go with you?” and I was like “hell yeah” and she was like “and what if we tried this restaurant out there that imports fresh pasta DAILY FROM I...

Day 4,079: Sax

Maaaannn…we started watching The Lord of the Rings trilogy tonight, as we are wont to do around this time of year, and…it’s so freaking good. SO good. One of those rare, once in a lifetime classics that comes along and just blows you away. That good. Now, the extended editions are certainly not perfect—the theatrical pacing is faaarrr superior for example, and most of those scenes added back in were cut for very good reasons…but the movies are so damn good that you literally don’t care! All the ...

Day 4,078: Lump

Twas an easy peasy day today, which is exactly what I needed. Nothing. I took a nice long nap. Watched some telly. Hung out with Liz and the pups. Oh! I did get up early to watch the Wrexham game, and we won! Looked like it was going to be another draw (tie), but we got a lucky penalty call late and converted the kick, so won 2-1. It was a controversial handball call, but I’m okay with it because we’ve had two super late penalties called on us in the past month or so that could’ve been no-calls,...
