The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Blueberry Scones
Happy Valentine’s Day! Usually, I post my short history of St. Valentine and why this isn’t just another Hallmark holiday. But since today is a Friday, I’m posting another Hungry {Romance} Writer recipe. And I’m excited because today is the second installment of Nate and Sarah’s Wedding Morning Breakfast. (Nate and Sarah are the hero and heroine of ONE DARK WISH, the second book in my bestselling Deadly Force series). I’m also excited because today means that the third book in the series, IN SEARCH OF TRUTH, comes out in 11 days!!

Sarah Munro ~ “I can’t believe that less than twenty-four hours ago I married Nate Walker. What’s even crazier is that we only met about a month ago! But so much has happened that I feel like we’ve known each other forever. It’s as if I’d been waiting for him, without realizing it, and the moment he walked into my life I felt whole. I felt complete.
Now, as I sit on the balcony of our Charleston hotel room and sip my chocolate strawberry mocha, I watch Nate across the table. He’s carefully cutting apart the beautiful blueberry scones and spreading butter on them. But since the scones are still warm, the butter is melting faster than he can spread it. I reach for the scone in his hand. “Let me do that for you.”
He scowls at the pastry. “This shouldn’t be this hard.”
I take a piece that’s covered in melted butter and pop it into his mouth. He tries to lick my fingers but I pull away to take the rest of the scone. “Nope. I’m hungry.”
His eyes narrow. “So am I.”
I chuckle and allow the scone to melt on my tongue. It’s perfect. Warm, blueberry-ey, buttery, yet not too sweet. “So,” I say as I wipe my hands on my napkin. “What are we going to do today.”
Before he nods toward the hotel room, I add, “Outside. In the real world. With people.”
He coughs, sips his coffee, and pops a huge piece of scone into his mouth. Finally he says, “What do you want to do?”
I smile. I’m a historian so what don’t I want to do in a city as old as Charleston, SC. “Well,” I pause to butter another scone, “I made some inquiries.” He groans and I laugh. “It’s not that bad. I promise.”
“What’s not that bad?” He lifts the lid of the silver chafing dish and an amazing smell of savory eggs comes out.
“I hired a tour guide.”
He raises an eyebrow. “Really?”
Yes, he has every right to be surprised since I’m a 17th and 18th century historian with a penchant for being a know-it-all. “Yep.” I sip my coffee and eat my pastry. The blueberry flavor has intensified with the added butter. “She’s going to take us through churches and their garden cemeteries–“
He groans again and closes his eyes.
“And, then we’re taking the ferry out to Fort Sumter.”
He opened his eyes and his gaze is focused on my lips. I lick them and his nostrils flare. “Really? Fort Sumter?”
“I thought, as an ex-soldier, you might enjoy that.” For those not familiar with the centuries-old sea fort off the cost of Charleston, it’s a retired U.S. Army Garrison that once protected the Charleston harbor from pirates and was also the sight of two battles, the first of which started the Civil War.
He shrugs, eats the last scone, and wipes his hand on a napkin. But I can tell he’s smiling inside. My new husband isn’t a huge history buff, but he does love all the military things.
“And…” I pause for a moment, “I also arranged for us to stay there after dusk so we can take the nighttime ghost tour of the island. After that, we’ll take a private ferry back to town and I’ve made late-night dinner reservations here at the hotel.”
“In our room?”
I smile around my mug. “Maybe.”
Nate stands and takes my hand to pull me up. Then he wraps me in his arms and starts to dance to some imaginary song in his head. I rest against him and stare into the hotel’s garden below. I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy or content in my life. Then I hear the church clock chime and realize the time. “Nate?”
“Hmm?” he whispers against my head as we sway.
I pull away away slightly. “We need to eat so we can get ready for the day.”
“Mmmmm,” is all he says.
I sigh and rest against him again. He’s right. The eggs will stay warm for a few more moments and as for the tour guide, I’ll call her and tell her we’ll be a bit late.”

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Blueberry SconesMy grandmother used to make these scones and they're still one of my treats to drink with tea. I always use fresh blueberries but if I don't have freshly-grated orange zest I will use dried and it tastes almost as good. Especially when you serve them with clotted cream!

Cut into 8 triangles.Gently separate the triangles and place them on the baking sheet.Brush the tops with a light coating of cold heavy cream. Sprinkle with Turbinado sugar.Bake 18 minutes or until lightly brown and firm to the touch. Remove from oven and place baking sheet on a baking rack.Sprinkle again with turbinado sugar for extra texture.Ten minutes later, remove the scones from the baking sheet and place directly on the rack.Enjoy warm or let cool completely. Once cool store scones in an airtight container for 1-2 days.7.8.1.276http://sharonwray.com/the-hungry-writer/the-hungry-romance-writer-blueberry-scones/[image error]

Sarah Munro’s Rose Hip Tea
I’m so happy that it’s almost the middle of February. That means that winter is halfway here! To remind myself that spring is definitely on its way, I’m pulling out the jar of rose hips that I dried this past summer to make Rose Hip Tea.
I found this recipe while doing research for my Deadly Force romantic suspense series and discovered that it was quite popular during the 17th and 18th centuries. So of course it would be included in Sarah Munro’s collection of herbal remedies that she uses in ONE DARK WISH, the second book in the series.
While many of Sarah’s recipes have been updated, this one is so simple that it’s the same now as it was in the early 1700’s. I hope it reminds you of spring while you watch the snow fall.
Sarah Munro’s Rose Hip Tea
1 Tablespoon Dried Rosehips*1/2 teaspoon Ceylon Cinnamon*Boiling waterHoney to taste (optional)
Combine rosehips and cinnamon in a small bowl. Add to a tea infuser and place in a teapot or mug. Pour boiling water over infuser and let steep 4-5 minutes. Stir in honey. Enjoy!
*Note: You can find dried rose hips on Amazon and in most health food stores. And I prefer Ceylon cinnamon since it’s has a lighter, more-citrusy taste than Cassia cinnamon which is the one usually found in grocery stores. Ceylon cinnamon can also be found on Amazon as well as most health food stores.

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Chocolate Strawberry Mocha
What happened to January? It seems to have just disappeared. But now that it’s February, it’s time to start thinking about new releases and new projects including the release of IN SEARCH OF TRUTH in less than 20 days!
While I’m super excited about Zack and Allison’s story, I’m also having trouble leaving Nate and Sarah (the hero and heroine of ONE DARK WISH) behind. So this month on the Hungry {Romance} Writer, I’m bringing us to the morning after Nate and Sarah’s wedding. They’re having breakfast on the balcony of their Charleston hotel appreciating this moment of happiness before their enemy attacks again. And they’re starting the first day of their marriage with Chocolate Strawberry Mochas.
Sarah Munro ~ “Last night I married Nate Walker. It was a small wedding in a tiny church on the Isle of Grace outside of Savannah, GA, and all of our friends were there. My father walked me down the aisle, and Pete, Nate’s best friend, stood up for him. It was short and sweet and so completely magical that I almost cried when I said my vows.
Afterwards, we went to a friend’s house for the reception. This friend, Calum Prioleau, who also happens to be the wealthiest man in Savannah, owns a summer cottage on the nearby Isle of Hope. When Calum said cottage, I mistakenly believed that was what it would be–except I was completely wrong. Let’s just say Calum’s summer home is larger than the White House and far more lovely. We danced in the garden, ate on one of the many patios, and served strawberry pie for dessert. Then, as a wedding gift, Calum gave us a short honeymoon in Charleston at a lovely hotel. This gift came with a driver since my husband Nate can’t drive yet (it’s a looooong story) and I’d had too much champagne.

But that was last night.

Sarah Munro’s Fragrant Room Spray
I’m so happy to be back with a newly-renovated website! And today I have one of Sarah Munro’s recipes for a natural, fragrant room spray. For those of you new to the blog, Sarah Munro is the heroine of ONE DARK WISH, the second book in my Deadly Force romantic suspense series. In the story, Sarah is a 17th Century historian and one of her side projects is collection and modernizing 17th and 18th century herbal recipes.
So, in honor of Sarah and all of her work, I’m publishing her recipes here on my blog. Since it’s winter and we’re all stuck in the house with the windows closed, sometimes it’s nice to add fragrance to the room. But so many products are filled with chemicals and strong smells, I prefer to make my own. This one is easy to make, completely natural, and doesn’t smell too strong. I hope you enjoy it!
Sarah Munro’s Fragrant Room Spray
8 ounces alcohol (I use vodka)4 ounces distilled water3 drops geranium essential oil2 drops lavender essential oil2 drops sweet orange oil1 drop peppermint oil1 sterilized spray bottle that holds at least 13 ounces.
In a glass measuring cup, add the alcohol and stir in the the essential oils. Let the mixture sit for 1 hour. After 1 hour, pour the alcohol and essential oil mixture into a glass spray bottle. Add 4 ounces of distilled water. Shake and spray. If you don’t use it all at once, that’s okay. It’s shelf stable for months. Just shake it the next time you use it.

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Ham & Potato Soup
The kids have gone back to school and winter has settled in. It’s been a busy month of recovering from the holidays and preparing for the new year, including a complete overhaul of this blog. Now I’m getting ready to launch IN SEARCH OF TRUTH, the third book in the Deadly Force series and complete a novella. Then it’s on to new submissions and new projects!
So what’s a busy romance writer to do when she’s working 18 hours a day? Make a huge pot of Ham and Potato Soup that she and her family can eat for a few days–depending on how much the family eats! This recipe is easy to make and so filling on a cold, snowy day, especially in a bread bowl. It tastes even better the next day!
Sharon Wray
Yields Serves 8
The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Ham & Potato SoupThis is one of my family's all-time favorite soups for dinner. Around the holidays, I almost always end up with a spiral ham. After we've eaten our fill of ham biscuits, I take some of the extra meat and make this soup. Then I freeze the bone to use in my ham and vegetable soup. Other than some chopping, this soup is easy to make. You can even add other ingredients for variety like carrots or corn or other herbs like parsley. And it's even more delicious served in or with homemade sourdough bread!

Happy New Year!
I want to wish all the wonderful people in my life–readers, family, and friends–a Happy New Year! I hope 2020 is the beginning of a decade that sees all of our dreams come true!
I’ve always loved this time of year because the festivities are over and it’s a time to recover and rest and prepare for the future. So in anticipation of this next decade, in a few days I’ll be taking down this site temporarily for some much needed renovation and maintenance. I will also be taking a brief hiatus from Twitter. I have two new releases coming out this winter and, just like when I was preparing for the birth of my twins, there’s a lot to do to get ready!
I can’t wait to share all the shiny, exciting, new things with you in a few weeks and in the meantime I hope you all enjoy the peace that comes with starting a brand New Year. Blessing and good health to all!

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Peppermint Mocha Latte
I can’t believe 2019 is almost over. The year has gone by so quickly and I’m not quite ready to see it leave. So much has happened, both great and not so great, and I need some time to savor and reflect. The third book in the Deadly Force Series, IN SEARCH OF TRUTH, comes out in February and I’m also finishing up a novella in the Deadly Force world. And I need time to submit new work to my agent and plot out book four in the Deadly Series.
My website also needs some attention. So, on January 1, I’m taking the site down for two weeks for much-needed updates and refurbishment. I am so looking forward to making some changes to my blog and social media sites in anticipation of having two more releases this winter. And I appreciate your patience while I take the site down temporarily.
Since this is the last Friday in December, it’s also the last episode of Sarah and Nate’s (the heroine and hero of ONE DARK WISH) first Christmas together. It’s midnight and even though everyone is supposed to be asleep, the nearby cathedral bells have woken Sarah up. She’s now in the kitchen, with only the Christmas tree as a nightlight, and is drinking a homemade Peppermint Mocha Latte.
Sarah Munro ~ “As I put the pots in the sink, I hear the bells in the nearby St. John the Baptist Cathedral start ringing. They’re playing Silent Night and for some reason my eyes tear up. I take my Peppermint Mocha Latte and sit on the couch next to the Christmas tree. The colorful lights sparkle and a crystal ornament catches the moonlight, scattering it throughout the room.
I sip the peppermint-coffee-chocolate-heavenly drink and draw a velvet blanket over my lap. The house is cold now and the men I love are asleep. It’s the first moment of quiet I’ve had in weeks. Between work and getting ready for the holidays, I’ve had hardly any time just to savor the season and anticipate the upcoming year. So much has happened this year, both terrifying and wonderful, and I’m happier than I ever thought possible. The problem is I’m also worried. Especially about the future.
My husband Nate (an ex-Green Beret) has almost fully recovered physically from his time in the POW camp. But I can see the truth in his green eyes. The monster who imprisoned him and destroyed his career, as well as the lives of his men, is still out there. And considering what’s been going on the past few months since we got married, I know that this villain is gearing up for another battle. A battle I’m not sure Nate and his men can win. They have no money, no power, no support of any kind. They run a decrepit, smelly, pirate-themed gym in the not-so-nice part of Savannah and work as bouncers at a local strip club. While they listen to the local chatter, they have no access to real intel. All they have is each other, and that terrifies me.
“Hey.” Nate appears in the doorway, and I smile at him. He normally doesn’t wear pjs of any kind but tonight he’s wearing a robe. Probably because he didn’t want to accidentally flash my dad.
“Hey.” I try not to sniffle but fail miserably.
He frowns and hurries over. Once he’s settled on the couch, with me in his arms and the blanket around us, he takes a sip of my drink and wrinkles his nose. He doesn’t like peppermint.
“I can make you something–“
“I’m fine.” He kisses my head. “I’m worried about you because I suspect you’re worried about me.”
I nod and rest against his warm body. The bells are now playing the Wexford Carol and I close my eyes.
“It’s going to be okay.” His whisper tickles my hair.
“You don’t know that. The night I was kidnapped, you almost didn’t find me in time.”
“But I did find you.” He tightens his arm around my shoulder. “I’ll always find you.”
I open my eyes and shift to see his face. “Nate–“
“Sarah.” He kisses my nose. “I know things seem…unsettled–“
“Scary.”
“Maybe. But my men and I are highly trained and ready for whatever happens next.”
“That’s the problem, Nate. What’s next might be even scarier. Even worse–“
“Sweetheart,” he pauses as the bells shift into the my favorite carol Lo, How a Rose E’re Blooming. “Do you know how I know we’re going to win, not just the next battle but the entire war?”
I shake my head and finish my drink. Then I snuggle against him.
“My men and I have two things our enemy doesn’t have. Two things our enemy has no concept of. Two things that ensures we will prevail.”
“These magical things…are they weapons?”
“No.” He chuckles. “First, my men and I have each other’s backs. Always.”
“And the second thing?”
A smile breaks up the hard angles of his face and he kisses me gently. “We have love. And, as you’re always reminding me, love saves all things.”
I stare at him for a long moment, backlit by the colorful Christmas tree while the bells continue their carols, and take his face in my hands. “I’m about to give you one of your Christmas presents.”
He grins. “You’re going to say my favorite words?”
“A variation of such, I suppose.” I kiss him one more time before saying, “You may be right.”
“And you have another present for me?
“Some surprises are for Christmas morning.” Instead of pressing my hand against my stomach, I whisper in his ear, “Some surprises are worth the wait.”

Coffee, a peppermint chocolate kiss, milk, cream and peppermint extract make a perfect holiday drink for those early mornings before work and school or, if using decaf coffee, a nice send off before bed. The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Frosted Gingerbread Cookies
I can’t believe it’s almost Christmas! And today I’m celebrating the season by watching Christmas movies and making Frosted Gingerbread Cookies. It’s also time for the next installment of Sarah and Nate’s (the heroine and hero of ONE DARK WISH) first Christmas celebration.
