Sarah Munro’s Fire Cider
It’s been a while since I’ve shared one of Sarah Munro’s recipes, but with the weather turning colder I thought this recipe for Fire Cider would be a perfect way to end the month of November.
For those of you new to this series, Sarah Munro, the heroine in ONE DARK WISH, the second book in the Deadly Force series, is a 17th and 18th century historian who inherited a collection of colonial-era herbal and homeopathic remedies from her mother and grandmother. And, in this blog space, Sarah has been sharing her updated recipes with us.
Today’s recipe is for a traditional, homeopathic colonial-era tonic known as Fire Cider. Essentially, Fire Cider is cider vinegar infused with other ingredients that have been purported to help kill viruses and build up the immune system naturally. This recipe includes garlic, turmeric, oranges, lemons, onions, honey, and a few other ingredients that have immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties.
The recipe isn’t hard to make, but it must sit for at least four weeks before use. Then, once it’s done, the dosage is 1 Tablespoon a day during the winter months. If anyone in my family is feeling sick, I give them an extra spoonful. Despite how it sounds, it actually tastes great.

Sarah Munro’s Fire Cider
Ingredients:
Raw Apple Cider Vinegar with Mother (I prefer Bragg’s)1 piece of horseradish root, 5-7 inches long1 large ginger rootI large white onion1 large orange1 lemon16 cloves of garlic2-4 habanero peppers1 Tablespoon ground turmeric1-2 cinnamon stick1-2 star aniseRaw Honey1 half-gallon glass jar or 2 quart jars with tight-fitting lids. (I use Ball canning jars)
Directions:
Sterilize the jars in boiling water and set aside.
Scrub both the horseradish root and ginger roots. Grate both roots and put in a small bowl. Set aside.
Peel and roughly chop the onion. Set aside.
Wash the orange and lemon. Roughly chop both pieces of fruit. Do not peel–use the entire fruit, but take out the seeds if there are any. Set aside.
Wash the peppers and cut off the stems. Coarsely chop and set aside.
Combine all of the above ingredients into a large bowl. Then stuff the ingredients into the half-gallon jar or divide between the two quart jars.
Sprinkle the turmeric on top. (divide between 2 quart jars, if necessary).
Shove the cinnamon stick and star anise into the jar (if using 1 quart jars, use 2 star anise and 2 cinnamon sticks — one per jar– as they’re too hard to cut in half).
Pour the apple cider vinegar into the jars, making sure it fill in all the tiny crevices and pockets. Use a knife to stamp out air bubbles and add more vinegar until the jar is filled to within a 1/4 inch from the top.
Cover the jar(s) with parchment paper and then secure the jar lid on top. Make sure the jar(s) are tightly sealed and then place in a cool, dark place for at least four weeks. Make sure to shake it once daily for the four weeks.
Once the four weeks are up, line a colander with cheesecloth and set it over a large bowl or pot. Drain the jar(s) into the cheesecloth. Let sit for 45 minutes, then squeeze out the remaining liquid.
When it’s strained, slowly add in some raw honey until it’s sweetened to your satisfaction. Then pour the Fire Cider into newly sterilized glass jars or bottles with tight-fitting lids.
Typical dosage is 1 Tablespoon per day during the winter, adding another Tablespoon if you’re not feeling well.
This Fire Cider will last for one year. Make sure you shake every time before you use it.

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Cranberry Nut Bread
It’s been another busy writing week but now I’m looking forward to the kids (and their animals) coming home from college. And this year their most requested food is my Cranberry Nut Bread.
I was surprised that they didn’t ask for my Black Bean Chili or Ham and Potato Soup. But then my daughter reminded me that Cranberry Nut Bread can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack. And I’m sure that once they’re home, they’ll make a list of their favorite foods.
Since it’s almost Thanksgiving, I thought I’d offer my favorite cranberry bread recipe. It’s a bit more complicated with the fresh orange juice, but it’s totally worth the work! I hope you enjoy it!

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Black Bean Chili
The blog has been quiet for a bit while I worked on behind-the-scenes technical issues and dealt with writing deadlines.
But now that the holidays are approaching, the kids are returning from college, and I’m still under deadlines, I’m posting one of my favorite fall dinners that everyone loves. A crockpot chili filled with diced tomatoes and black beans. It’s easy to make and feeds a ton of people (including teenagers), especially if you serve it over rice. And, as a bonus, it freezes well so I can make it now and serve it around the holidays when things get really busy.
I hope you enjoy this meal. I love to serve it in front of a fire with hot-from-the-oven cornbread and grated cheese on top!

282The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Black Bean ChiliThis is my mom's recipe that I adapted years ago. I always serve this chili over cooked white rice and freshly-made cornbread. I cook the rice right before I serve the chili so both are hot at the same time. Then, to be decadent, I serve the hot cornbread with butter and honey. This recipe is easily doubled and freezes beautifully for up to six months. I've served it tailgates, on Halloween night (right before trick-or-treating), and on Christmas Eve. It's that versatile and easy to make.

Ichabod Crane’s Last Feast
[image error]
Since there are so many Halloween posts floating around, and last year I wrote about the history of the holiday, today I’m sharing a recipe directly from one of my favorite Halloween stories: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving.
I grew up close to Tarrytown, NY near where the Dutch settled in the mid-seventeenth century and the story of Ichabod Crane and his headless horseman took place. We took many school trips to Tarrytown in the fall, but I never got tired of wandering around the old cemeteries, seeing Revolutionary War skirmish sites, and throwing apples at the tree where Major Andre was supposedly hanged. (I don’t remember why we did that!) Anyway, I especially loved the bonfires with the live readings of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Washington Irving’s famous short story. After the reading, we’d go to a nearby inn where we’d drink hot cider and eat apple cakes and ginger cakes.
Why those two cakes? Because they’re mentioned in the story when Washington Irving gives us a wonderful description of the Van Tassel feast. Here is the open source passage:
“Fain would I pause to dwell upon the world of charms that burst upon the enraptured gaze of my hero, as he entered the state parlor of Van Tassel’s mansion. Not those of the bevy of buxom lasses, with their luxurious display of red and white; but the ample charms of a genuine Dutch country tea-table, in the sumptuous time of autumn. Such heaped up platters of cakes of various and almost indescribable kinds, known only to experienced Dutch housewives! There was the doughty doughnut, the tender oly koek, and the crisp and crumbling cruller; sweet cakes and short cakes, ginger cakes and honey cakes, and the whole family of cakes. And then there were apple pies, and peach pies, and pumpkin pies; besides slices of ham and smoked beef; and moreover delectable dishes of preserved plums, and peaches, and pears, and quinces; not to mention broiled shad and roasted chickens; together with bowls of milk and cream, all mingled higgledy-piggledy, pretty much as I have enumerated them, with the motherly teapot sending up its clouds of vapor from the midst—Heaven bless the mark! I want breath and time to discuss this banquet as it deserves, and am too eager to get on with my story. Happily, Ichabod Crane was not in so great a hurry as his historian, but did ample justice to every dainty.”
When I was growing up, it wasn’t uncommon for local restaurants to serve “Ichabod Crane’s Last Meal” which included roasted chickens, homemade jams, and freshly-made cakes and pies. So today, in honor of the season, I’m giving you my grandmother’s recipe for Dutch Apple Cake, similar to the one Ichabod Crane ate in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, not long before he met his fate with the headless horseman. I hope you enjoy it!

Dutch Apple PieThis recipe came from my grandmother. It calls for Macoun apples which grow in the Hudson River Valley. And they're the best apples I've ever tasted. But they are hard to find. So if you can't find them, substitute your favorite semi-sweet apple. If you use a more sour apple, add a bit more sugar. It's best served warm with whipped cream and vanilla ice cream!

Michaelmas & Blackberries: An Autumn Tradition
Today, September 29th, is Michalmas. For those of you not familiar with the holiday, it’s the feast day of St. Michael the Archangel. Michaelmas always comes after the Fall Equinox and the Holyrood Ember Days. This feast day is also, supposedly, the last day we should eat blackberries.
Why is that? Because, according to legend, on this day St, Michael–Heaven’s greatest angel–defeated the angel Lucifer. At the end of a great battle, St. Michael banished Lucifer from Heaven. When Lucifer fell into Hell–now as the devil–he landed, bottom first, onto a thorny blackberry bush. In anger, he spit and stomped on the bush, cursing its fruit. (It’s also possible he did other things to the poor bush, but I don’t want to be too graphic or gross.)
So some believe that it’s not a good idea to eat blackberries after Michaelmas as they’ll be too sour. Of course, blackberries naturally sour in late September due to the changing weather. And I’m sure it’s not a coincidence that today is also National Poisoned Blackberry Day.
When I was growing up, we celebrated this holiday every year. And we always made sure to pick all the blackberries from the bushes in our woods no later than September 28. Then, after church on September 29, we turned the berries into a pie in honor of St. Michael. Since it’s considered a feast day, we always added vanilla ice cream or freshly whipped cream.
Below is the my favorite recipe for Michaelmas Blackberry Pie. I always make my own pie crusts, but you could use store-bought or frozen as well. For those interested in making their own, here is a link to my easy pie crust recipe: Butter Pie Crust.
I hope that you all have a wonderful Michaelmas and enjoy the last of the blackberries.

Sarah Munro’s Dandelion Salve
Another week has gone by and now August is almost over! But Sarah Munro, the heroine in ONE DARK WISH, the second book in the Deadly Force series, still has recipes to share from the Dandelion-Infused Oil we made at the beginning of the month. All of this month’s recipes are based on 17th and 18th century recipes–they all have simple ingredients found right outside our door. And today’s recipe is the easiest yet. It’s a Dandelion Salve that’s perfect for those sore, achy muscles and chapped, dry skin that always appear at the end of summer.

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Blueberry Crumb Cake
It’s been another long, hot week here in Virginia and while I hate to wish time away, I’m beginning to yearn for Fall. But one thing I’m not ready to let go of yet are the fruits of summer, especially blueberries. August may be a bit late for blueberries but we had such a late spring that I’m still finding piles of them at the grocery store. And as we continue with Allison Pinckney’s Bridal Tea story (Allison is the heroine in the third Deadly Force book IN SEARCH OF TRUTH) in Maddie Ashton’s Charleston home (last week we served Raspberry Crumb Bars), I’m adding one of my all-time favorite blueberry recipes: Blueberry Crumb Cake.
Allison Pinckney ~ “After giving my toast, I sat down and listened while the women around the table (my best friend Maddie and her almost-eight-year old daughter Susan, Juliet Montfort, Charlotte Marun, Emilie Tremaine, Sarah Walker, and Samantha Barclay) discussed the men we loved. All of them were ex-Green Berets running a sketchy gym known as Iron Rack’s in Savannah, and they’ve had a rough few months. Actually, they’ve had a rough six years. Their enemies are determined and fierce and my fiancé Zack, along with his men, are always trying to figure out when the next battle will happen.
And as I sat there, my chest tightened. We’d all been through so much so far, and I knew that this story was far from over. When Mrs. Pickles, Susan’s black cat, jumped into my lap I silently prayed we’d all survive.
“Enough with this sad talk!” Vivienne Beaumont stood and nodded to the caterer who hovered nearby. “Please bring the champagne out to the garden.”
“I don’t understand,” Charlotte finished her blueberry coffee cake and added, “I thought we were having tea?”
Vivienne waved a regal hand and left the conservatory. Slowly, we all followed her outside. Because Vivienne–Zack’s wealthy godmother–always ran whatever show she was invited to while the rest of us usually just fell in line. Things were easier that way.
Just before we left the room, I snagged another piece of the Blueberry Crumb Cake and ate it–very inelegantly–as I headed into the garden. (yes, the cake is that good!) But then I stopped at the gate. Someone, probably Maddie, had decorated the garden with another table with tea sandwiches and scones. Smaller tables surrounded the food and another table, off to the side, was piled high with gifts wrapped in the prettiest papers.
“What is all this?” I asked.
Sarah took one arm, while Samantha took the other, and we all walked around the fountain. I loved the cooler mist that caressed my arms as we walked by.
“This part,” Sarah whispered, “was supposed to come later.”
“But,” Samantha said, “what Vivienne wants, Vivienne gets.”
“That’s right,” Vivienne appeared in front of them and took my hand. As Vivienne led me to a chair near the present table, she added, “I’m sick to death of living in the wreckage of the past and the future. Today is about happy things. And you marrying Zack has made me happier than I’ve been in a long time.”
I squeezed her hand, and then sat. That meant so much to me, I didn’t have the right words to offer back. So instead I took a glass of champagne from the caterer who carried crystal champagne flutes on a silver tray. I loved high teas, especially all the cakes and sandwiches, but I loved champagne even more. “Thank you, Vivienne.”
She kissed my cheek and walked over to the present table. When Charlotte and Emilie moved toward the food–specifically the Blueberry Crumb Cake, Vivienne clapped and glared at them. Emilie immediately grabbed Charlotte’s hand and dragged her to a table.
Except Charlotte, who didn’t know Vivienne as well, said, “I’m hungry.”
“We shall eat more in a bit.” Vivienne glanced at Maddie. “Where’s Susan?”
Maddie sat in a chair next to me, her pink skirt dragging along the carefully cultivated lawn. “Inside with Mrs. Pickles. She won’t come out until we’re done.”
“Why?” I asked.
“Because,” Vivienne handed her a present, “this is not appropriate for children.”
Not sure what to think, I opened the first present and pulled out a…pink lace neglige. “Oh.” I wasn’t sure what else to say. But at least I knew why Susan had to stay inside.
Maddie chuckled, “So, that’s from me. And this isn’t just a bridal tea–“
“Because teas can get so tedious,” Vivienne said as she gave me another present. This one had purple ribbons all over it. “So, we decided to add some spice. And right now, we’re having a lingerie shower.”
Good grief. I glanced at Sarah who just shrugged. Emilie laughed as she sipped her champagne while Juliet and Charlotte whispered about something. That couldn’t be good.
“Okay,” I said, afraid to open the present in my lap. “So, lingerie, as in… nightgowns?”
Vivienne gave them all an elegant shrug. “Among other things.”
“Go on,” Samantha urged, “that one is mine.”
A moment later I held the sheerest white peignoir set I’d ever seen. To be honest, it was beautiful. But I felt the flush rush up my neck. My face was probably tomato red by now. “Uh, thanks.”
Samantha smiled and handed her another package. “This one is from Emilie.”
I opened it and found the tiniest lace bra and panty set ever made. It was so delicate, it had to be illegal. “It’s lovely.” I blew my future sister-in-law a kiss, trying not to feel weird about the entire thing.
Vivienne snorted elegantly–everything she did was elegant–and said, “We’re all adults here. And you, my dear, need some more champagne.”
Agreeing, I took another full flute. After downing half the glass, I opened the next package. Sarah’s gift was a lilac-colored silk robe with matching slippers. “Wow. This is gorgeous.”
Sarah tilted her head and smiled. “Vivienne helped me find it.”
“Yes,” Vivienne gave me another box. “Sarah needed help.”
“I still think,” Sarah said indignantly, “that Allison would’ve loved the Iron Rack’s sweatpants and T-shirt. They’re so comfortable.”
Vivienne waved a hand in dismissal. “Open it, Allison. It’s from Juliet and Charlotte.”
I glanced at Juliet and Charlotte, not sure what to think about their private whispers. This box was much bigger than the others, and Maddie helped me open it. I tore apart the tissue to find a white lace corset with garters and sheer silk stockings. “Wow.” I said as I held up the corset. “This is so beautiful.”
“It’s all because of Vivienne,” Juliet said. “Vivienne has this buyer in Paris–“
“Yes, dear,” Vivienne interrupted gently. “No need to mention Charles.”
Vivienne’s lingerie buyer was a Frenchman? Of course he was. Because everything Vivienne did was over the top. “Well,” I said as I laid the corset into the box, I love it. I love everything. Thank you so much.”
Vivienne handed me an envelope. “There’s one more. Except it’s not for the wedding night.”
I opened the pale purple stationary and found a business card for Couture Bridal Underpinnings. A custom shop in New Orleans. “What is this?”
“Once you choose your wedding dress, you’ll need the perfect undergarments. And Claire, a dear friend of mine in the French Quarter, will custom make whatever you need for the day.”
I was even more speechless than before. Instead of grappling for words, I stood and hugged Vivienne. “That’s the loveliest–“
“Now, now,” Vivienne pushed me away but I could tell she had tears in her eyes. “It’s nothing.” She clapped and the caterer appeared with more trays of food, including more Blueberry Crumb Cake. “It’s time to feed Charlotte and Emilie.”
All of the women laughed and they moved toward the table. And while Vivienne organized everything and everyone around her to her satisfaction, I hugged each and every woman there, thanking them for the gifts. But I could tell they had no idea how I truly felt–no idea that a few months ago my life was empty and sad and I never thought I’d ever be happy again. It wasn’t until IN SEARCH OF TRUTH happened that I found my own strength and my own true love. And as Susan ran out, with Mrs. Pickles in her arms, I’m reminded that no matter how bleak things seem, friends always bring hope and love. And I’m grateful for all of them.

The Hungry {Romance} Author: Blueberry Crumb CakeI found this recipe in my grandmother's box but she had a note that she'd gotten it from Maida Heatter. I couldn't find the original source but a smilier recipe is in Maida Heatter's Book of Great Desserts (Andrews & McMeel Publishing, 1999 ed.), pg. 96. This is one of my favorite recipe for blueberries. It doesn't just smell delicious--it's amazing for breakfast, brunch, and an afternoon tea. It's sweet and blueberry-ey and simply wonderful. It doesn't work as well with frozen berries so I only make it when fresh berries are in season.

Sarah Munro’s Dandelion Lotion Bars
I sincerely hope that you are enjoying these last few weeks of summer. This month, here with The Romance Herbalist, Sarah Munro is sharing her recipes for lotions, balms, and soaps using her Dandelion-Infused Oil. (a 17th century recipe that Sarah, the heroine in ONE DARK WISH–book 2 in the Amazon bestselling Deadly Force Series–studied and edited for contemporary use.) And today Sarah is sharing how to make DIY dandelion lotion bars. They’re a great moisturizer for dry, sunburned skin as well as an antidote for those pesky late-summer bug bites. They’re easy to travel with when you hit the beach for that one last fling.

A Study in Summer: Sudley Manor
Because my family and I are sticking close to home this summer, this is a repost from the archives. But reviewing these old posts has been difficult. Difficult because they revive memories–now bittersweet–of lazy, languorous summers spent playing in pools and going on picnics and visiting family. And I have to admit that it’s made me sad. I just can’t believe that I once took endless summer days–picking berries and reading in hammocks–for granted. If editing these older posts has taught me one thing it’s that I will never take time with family for granted again!
“A few weeks ago, my sister-in-law invited my family to a summer upper at Sudley Manor. Sudley Manor, a beautiful estate in the foothills of the Shendoah Mountains, is one of the homes owned by the Carter and Lee families, two of the oldest in Virginia.
Once we learned the invite included all children and dogs, we packed up the family and headed west, toward the Shenandoah Valley, excited to visit with extended family we hadn’t seen in a while.
Upon arrival, we were greeted with hugs by both family and a profusion of hunting dogs. Sudley Manor is a 17th century historic property that brims with both Revolutionary War and Civil War history. But since it was one of the hottest days so far this summer, and the humidity was a hundred percent (a not uncommon occurrence here in Virginia) my children and their cousins were more interested in hitting the pool.
The pool, hidden in behind the Kitchen Garden, had a beautiful view of the rolling Virginia countryside and the Shenandoah Valley. Lavender from the colonial-era garden filled the air and the barest breeze echoed with the hum of cicadas. Luckily for the adults, we were able to sit in the cabana at the side of the pool and freshly-squeezed lemonade while we chatted.
Although I was desperate to explore the property with my camera (despite the heat and humidity that fogged my camera lens), the kids decided to have a diving contest. Since they didn’t trust us to judge fairly, they wanted photographic proof. So I drank lemonade, laughed with the other adults, and caught images of children in mid-air.

Oops! I got distracted by the amazing view!
After an hour, I snuck away to check out one of the walled parterre gardens (a staple of colonial-era Virginia properties). While most of the flowers hid from the intense sun, I caught a few brave petaled souls and an iron wood nymph tucked within a dry fountain.

But I was called back to duty when the “Divisionals” started for the final dive score. After tons of daredevil antics, the competition ended with back dives.

After a wonderful afternoon swimming, playing with dogs, and spending time with those we love, we headed inside for a supper of cold fried chicken, corn and bean salad, and homemade cookies. All served with ice-cold lemonade, of course! Although it was too hot to eat on the patio, we had an amazing view from the summer dining room window. (Yes, there are dining rooms for summer and winter–another colonial-era Virginia anomaly). We sat at the table until after ten p.m. eating ice cream and listening to stories about relatives who’d lived in the house and passed long ago. When we left, the sun was just starting to go down. That’s when I realized it was the Summer Solstice–the longest day of the year.
Finally, after many licks from multiple dogs, hugs between cousins, and promises to see each other before Christmas, we drove through the oak-lined path, secure in the promise that one day soon we’d return to Sudley Manor.”
What is a “Study in . . .”? A visual record defined by a single element, such as color, texture, or type.
