Sarah Munro’s Spiced Apple Cider

Like today, apples were a popular food in the 17th century. And, like today, people ate apples in every form possible. From desserts to alcoholic beverages. But Sarah Munro, the heroine in ONE DARK WISH (the second book in my Deadly Force romantic suspense series), found an authentic colonial recipe for a Spiced Apple Cider. The recipe hasn’t changed much in over 300 years, but Sarah did update it with warm caramel syrup.

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Chicken Corn Chowder

I can’t believe it’s almost Halloween! And this weekend we have family coming over and we’re going on our town’s annual Haunted Trail. It’s three miles through a wooded trail that’s been decorated with all sorts of scary scenes and haunted houses.

It’s one of our family’s favorite events of the year and we usually count down the days. This year I’m making a big pot of Chicken Corn Chowder so, once we’re sufficiently spooked and back home safe and sound, we’ll eat dinner around the outdoor firepit. I usually serve this with corn bread and wine. Because the adults need the extra help after a long, spooky night!

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Chicken Corn Chowder

This recipe takes more time than some of the other soup recipes, but this one is worth the time. Not only is it delicious and filling, it can be made ahead and the extras can be frozen for a dark winter night's supper.

12 3/4 cups chicken broth1 1/4 cups wild rice (about 7 1/2 ounces)6 1/4 cups frozen corn (about 2 1/2 pounds), thawed2 Tablespoons olive oil1 lb chicken breasts, cubed (uncooked)3 carrots, peeled and diced2 medium onions, chopped1 1/2 cups half and half

Instructions

Bring 5 cups broth to simmer in a heavy medium saucepan over medium heat. Add wild rice and simmer until the broth evaporates and rice is almost tender, stirring occasionally, about 40 minutes.Meanwhile, blend 3 3/4 cups corn and 1 1/2 cups chicken broth in processor until a thick, almost smooth puree forms.Heat vegetable oil in a heavy large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add chicken and saute until beginning to brown, about 5 minutes. Add carrots and onions and stir 3 minutes. Add remaining 6 cups broth and bring soup to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and simmer soup for 15 more minutes.Add cooked wild rice, corn puree, and remaining 2 1/2 cups corn kernels to soup. Cook another 30 minutes, until rice is very tender. Stir in half and half. Thin soup with broth, if necessary. Season soup to taste with salt and pepper.Serve in bowls and with hot sourdough bread and a side salad of baby mixed greens. Pumpkin pie makes a great dessert!Variation: For an extra zing, substitute smoked sausage, andouille sausage, or Kielbasa for the chicken. Saute in the oil before adding the vegetables.7.8.1.2113http://sharonwray.com/the-hungry-writer/the-hungry-romance-writer-chicken-corn-chowder/

Halloween Movies for Chills and Laughs

It’s almost Halloween! That means it’s time to watch my favorite Halloween movies. Some are scary, some are silly, and some have nothing to do with Halloween but they’re just creepy. This isn’t a complete list, just some of my go-to October spooky viewings.

All of the synopses are courtesy of IMDB.

1. Halloween (the original 1978 movie)

Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.

I didn’t see this movie until years after it debuted on the big screen….on a night when I was in high school and I was babysitting!! It terrified me and is still one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen.

2. The Shining

A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.

I loved this book so much that when the movie came out I was first in line at the movie theater. And it didn’t disappoint! Even though the movie left out parts of the book, and it was made so many years ago, it’s still a terrifying movie that’s worth watching with a bowl of popcorn and the lights out!

3. Rosemary’s Baby

A young couple moves in to an apartment only to be surrounded by peculiar neighbors and occurrences. When the wife becomes mysteriously pregnant, paranoia over the safety of her unborn child begins to control her life.

I found this movie to be even scarier than the book. It’s still, even all of these years later, one of the creepiest movies ever made. The seeming normalcy of the people involved make it that much scarier. And I love Mia Farrow’s authentic 1960s dresses!

4. Hocus Pocus

A curious youngster moves to Salem, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches that were executed in the 17th century.

I just saw this movie recently and loved it. It’s fun and silly and a great movie to watch with the family.

5. The Haunting of Hill House

Flashing between past and present, a fractured family confronts haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it.

Another book adaptation that I loved as much as the original short story. This Netflix mini-series is so good you need to make time to watch all of the episodes within a few days–you’re just not going to want anything to interrupt you until you’re finished. And this one you’ll need to keep the lights on. Yes, it’s that scary!

6. Bram Stoker’s Dracula

The centuries old vampire Count Dracula comes to England to seduce his barrister Jonathan Harker’s fiancée Mina Murray and inflict havoc in the foreign land.

This movie is a bit over-the-top with costumes and settings and plot, but I love this movie. It’s kind of steampunky yet still stays true to the original story.

7. The Birds

A wealthy San Francisco socialite pursues a potential boyfriend to a small Northern California town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people.

I saw this Alfred Hitchcock movie in Halloween night when I was 12 and I don’t think I slept for six months. I was so terrified and it had nothing at all to do with Halloween. It didn’t even have a bad guy–it just had birds!! I still can’t watch this movie if I’m home alone. I have to be surrounded by my family and dog!

8. The Nightmare Before Christmas

Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion.

Such a cute, clever animated movie with a great story and even more wonderful music. A great family-friendly movie!

9. The Blair Witch Project

Three film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind.

When I first saw this movie, I was astounded at how scared I was when it ended. At first I thought the moving camera was annoying but before I knew it I was so afraid I couldn’t leave the theater to use the restroom. I didn’t want to go anywhere alone! Now that I’m older, I don’t find it as scary–but it’s still super creepy and I can’t watch it alone.

10. The Witch

A family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic, and possession.

I just saw this movie a few months ago (it was made in 2015) and I had to immediately rewatch it. It takes place during early colonial times in New England with authentic language that took time to understand. But once I realized what was going on, I was totally hooked. It’s a terrifying story that seems so real you can feel every character’s emotions. It’s definitely a movie that you’ll want  to rewatch and even study because there are so many layers to this compelling story.

11. Psycho (The 1960 Original)

A Phoenix secretary embezzles forty thousand dollars from her employer’s client, goes on the run, and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother.

Another Alfred Hitchcock classic that is the standard by which all other horror movies must live up to.  A terrifying story with an ending that is still so disturbing and powerful that I can’t watch it alone or in the dark. It can still give me nightmares!

12. The Thing from another planet (the 1951 original)

Scientists and American Air Force officials fend off a bloodthirsty alien organism while at a remote arctic outpost.

This was my father’s favorite scary movie and we used to watch it together every Halloween once we got a VCR. It’s a bit corny but it’s still a great movie and another one for the family to watch together–as long as the kids aren’t too young.

13. Mary shelley’s Frankenstein

When the brilliant but unorthodox scientist Dr. Victor Frankenstein rejects the artificial man that he has created, the Creature escapes and later swears revenge.

I’ve seen a number of Frankenstein movies, but this one is my favorite because it stays fairly close to the book. The costumes are beautiful and the acting is great. It’s not super scary but it is very, very compelling.

14. Young Frankenstein

An American grandson of the infamous scientist, struggling to prove that his grandfather was not as insane as people believe, is invited to Transylvania, where he discovers the process that reanimates a dead body.

One of my all-time favorite movies that never fails to make me laugh and cry at the same time. The humor is a bit “adult” but a fun movie to watch with teenagers!

Sarah Munro’s Body Blemish Spray

A common complaint among my friends who work out regularly is the random body acne that appears after a particularly sweaty workout. This was a problem in the 17th century as well, and Sarah’s recipe box had a recipe in it that suggested wiping the affected area with witch hazel. Since witch hazel is an astringent with anti-inflammatory properties, it works really well on body blemishes. To update the recipe, the rose water adds a soothing element and the tea tree essential oil is a natural antibacterial compound. It’s also super easy to make and lasts until you use it up. Just make sure to shake the bottle before each use!

(For those of you new to this series, Sarah Munro is the heroine of ONE DARK WISH, book 2 in the Deadly Force romantic suspense series. Sarah is a historian who, on the side, is updating the botanical remedies she discovered while researching a young Puritan girl accused of witchcraft in 1699.)

Sarah Munro’s Body Blemish Spray

Ingredients:

2 ounces witch hazel

1 ounce rose water

15 drops tea tree essential oil

Directions:

Using a small funnel, combine the witch hazel, rose water, and tea tree oil in a 4-ounce glass spray bottle. Shake contents well and shake again before each use.

After showering, spray onto the affected area. Let dry completely before dressing.

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Autumn Minestrone

So I’ve decided that October is the Month of Soups! Between back-to-school meetings, PTA boards, church committees, football games, and writing deadlines, there’s only thing for a hungry romance writer to do: Make Autumn Minestrone. And here’s a perfect recipe for the busy days of fall. It also goes perfectly with homemade Irish Soda Bread!

This soup is wonderful with a loaf of bread and a glass of red wine--for the adults, of course! If you make a double recipe, you can freeze half of it for another night. I got the recipe years ago from a co-worker and have been tweaking it ever since.

ONE DARK WISH Available from Audible!

I’m so excited because ONE DARK WISH, the second book in the Deadly Force romantic suspense series, is now an audio book available on Audible.

Just like the first book  EVERY DEEP DESIRE (which is still on sale for $1.99!), this second book is narrated by the amazing Savannah Peachwood and Kevin T. Collins.

These two narrators do an amazing job, especially since there are a LOT of characters and they each have different accents from around the world.

One Amazon ARC reviewer said, “This book is packed with so much action it’s exciting and there are twists and red herrings, and smoking hot romance. Overall, a great story!”

Another Amazon reviewer said, “5 stars! If you love meaty, mindful writing with a sultry sexy love story intertwined and enjoy trying to figure out the connections between a Green Beret librarian, and a pirate themed gym … you’ll love this read. This is a “can’t put down” page turner.”

“Sexy Green Berets, dark secrets, and sizzling chemistry.” Cherry Adair, New York Times best-selling author

Her life must be forfeit for his to be redeemed

Historian Sarah Munro is not used to being shot at, but that’s just what happens while she’s poking around cemeteries on Georgia’s Isle of Grace, searching for the key to a centuries-old cipher. Her quest has unwittingly drawn the attention of two deadly enemies intent on destroying each other – and anyone who gets in their way.

Ex-Green Beret Major Nate Walker is on a mission of his own: to restore the honor of his men. To do that, he is required to stop Sarah – or one of his own men will die. Caught in the middle of a deadly rivalry, Nate can’t afford to trust the woman standing in his way. But his heart says he can’t afford not to…

So if audiobooks are your preferred way to “read”, here’s another book for your TBLT (to be listened to) pile!

Sarah Munro’s Pumpkin Spice Creamer

This recipe isn’t a botanical remedy, but it is based on a 17th century version of a New England autumn wassail-type beverage. So I’m including it with Sarah’s collections. While the cream doesn’t have any kind of healing features other than the fact it’s super yummy and warms the body, the cinnamon does have anti-inflammatory properties. And, of course, coffee is essential for life.

Birthdays and Saint Days and Angadresma

It’s a full moon, just in time for my birthday today!

As I was growing up in a Catholic neighborhood, it was common to celebrate your birthday along with the saint’s feast day that it fell on. Some of my friends got to celebrate with the biggies: St. Francis, St. Patrick, or St. Valentine. Others even got the feast day of the Archangels. So who did I get? Actually, there are a lot of saints who have October 14th as their saint day. One is fairly famous and most of them are men. But after studying all of the saints I share a day with, I discovered an obscure woman known as St. Angadresma who died in 695 AD.

Little is known about St. Angadresma (I call her Saint Angie for short) but what I’ve discovered makes me wish I’d known her while she was alive. St. Angadresma was born in 615 AD in France and, at a young age, was betrothed to Ansbert of Chausey. When she discovered the betrothal she was horrified. She’d already decided to join a religious order and prayed for a disease to disfigure her, thereby making her unappealing to her betrothed. She then contracted leprosy and the engagement was broken.

She was allowed to enter a monastery (now known as a convent) and after her initiation ceremony, the disease disappeared. Many years later she became the abbess of a Benedictine monastery near Beauvais, France. St. Angadresma became known for her pragmatic approach to managing the monastery, in good times and bad. She even helped save the monastery and its inhabitants from a fierce fire. This fire destroyed a lot of the monastery’s records and there are very few details remaining from her life. But from what little is known, she apparently was a brilliant businesswoman and suffered no fools. She was smart, organized, and determined to fight off invaders, bad investments made without her knowledge, and heretics. No matter the threat–physcial, emotional, or mental–she fought them off with her intelligence and strength of will.

One of the miracles attributed to St. Angadresma many years after her death involved the Siege of Beauvais at the end of June 1472. The Duke of Burgundy, aka Charles the Bold, had taken the town of Beauvais hostage. The town had a tiny garrison (30 archers, less than a hundred soldiers, and only a few artillery pieces) to stand against more than 80,000 men. When the town refused to open its gates, the army attacked on three sides while everyone in town, including women and children, fought them off from the ramparts. Children threw stones, women tossed hot oil, while the townsmen used heavier weapons. When things looked bleak for the exhausted townspeople, a soldier grabbed the coffer that held the relics of St. Angadresma and paraded it through the town to up the morale.

Inspired by the fierce St. Angadresma, another famous French woman/warrior appeared. A Beauvais woman named Jayne Layne became known as Jeanne Hachette because she fought off the Burgundy army with a battle axe. To this day, Jeanne Hachette is still known as one of France’s fiercest fighters.

The town of Beauvais withstood the constant bombardment of the Burgundy army and took huge losses. But every day a soldier would parade through the streets with the relics of St. Angadresma and it was enough to keep the poor townspeople fighting. When the army’s artillery blew holes in their defensive walls, the townspeople repaired the walls with the stones that paved the streets.

Finally a month later, on July 22 1472, Charles the Bold and his army gave up. The town of Beauvais, with the help of St. Angadresma, saved not only their city but all of France. After that defeat, Charles the Bold–who’d intended to invade and conquer all of France–fell back only to be defeated at the Siege of Nancy in Lorraine. France was saved and the town of Beauvais gave the credit to St. Angadresma.

Often, saints are shown with their symbols (usually the instruments of their martyrdom or death) and are often chosen to protect people in certain situations. (for example, St. Michael is the Patron Saint of soldiers.) But since so little is known of St. Angadresma, she has no symbols or patronages. So when I was a young girl, I decided to give her some.

Since our days coincide in Autumn, I chose fall-themed symbols that I know St. Angie would’ve had in Beauvais: Pumpkins, Apricot-colored roses, and outdoor fire pits. Oh, and hot coffee. Because coffee was a thing in the 7th century and is every businesswoman’s best friend. As far as her patronage? Even as a young girl I knew I wanted to be a writer. So, of course, I gave her the patronage of writers who write long, complicated romance novels. And considering how many words I’ve written in the last few years, I have no doubt she’s up to the challenge!

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Dad’s Turkey Soup

My father was a wonderful cook. As one of six Depression-era children living in a New York City tenement, he grew up in a household that wasted nothing. Especially food. This soup was his favorite recipe, not just because it’s delicious and uses up the last of a turkey, but because it was the only one of his mother’s recipes he could remember.

For me, the best thing about cooking a turkey (besides the leftover sandwiches served with hot tea) is serving this soup with whole wheat molasses bread.  And since this weekend will be a busy one with family and friends and pumpkin and apple pickings, this soup will be the perfect meal to end a wonderful day!

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Dad's Turkey Soup

I make this soup with meat from a previously cooked turkey. I peel the skin off the legs and wings (if not eaten), cut apart the carcass and keep meatier parts (back and ribs.) I throw away the main cavity, but I do keep the wishbone for later! I also serve this with whole wheat molasses bread.
