Last of the Holiday Romances

New Year’s has passed, and so has Twelfth Night. But it’s still dark and cold outside which is the perfect time to read the last of the holiday romances while wrapped in a blanket near the fireplace. The Snow Maiden: A Winter Fairytale

The Snow Maiden is a Slavic fairytale I’ve always loved, despite its happy/sad ending. And it’s not to be confused with Hans Christian Andersen’s Danish short story The Ice-Maiden–that’s a tragedy on a whole other level. I’m not sure why so many winter-based fairytales are sad, but I suspect it has to do with the overall feeling of gloom and doom that comes with the lack of sun.

Anyway, this story is not as well known, maybe because it takes place in Russia and dates back to the 19th century and never made it into the canon of Western European fairytales. The reason I’m writing about it is because I just watched a movie on Netflix called The Snow Sister. While it’s a different twist on this story, it gives the same vibes and there are a number of clues thrown to viewers familiar with this less-well-known fairytale. (This post isn’t about the movie, but if you don’t mind subtitles it’s definitely worth watching–with lots of tissues.)

This story is about Ded Moroz (roughly translated to Grandfather Frost or Old Man Frost, a mythic Slavic character similar to Father Christmas who brings small gifts to children and New Year’s Eve) and his companion Snegurochka, translated to Snow Maiden. Some stories say she is the daughter of Ded Moroz and the Snow Queen, and others say she is his granddaughter. But the most popular story says she is a snow sculpture that Ded Moroz brought to life, similar to Frosty the Snowman. (Or, for my romance readers, the movie Hot Frosty!) In the early versions of the Snow Maiden story, she lived in the Russian city of Kostroma. But it seems that sometime during the 20th century she moved to Veliky Ustyug, Russia.

Ded Moroz and the Snow Maiden travel together in early January, and some stories have them disappearing on Twelfth Night (Jan. 6) while in others they hang around until the Vernal Equinox. While Ded Moroz is Slavic, the Snow Maiden is from Russia. There are older stories from the 17th and 18th centuries about Ded Moroz that don’t include the Snow Maiden (although she did appear on Russian Christmas tree ornaments), but his fame didn’t take off until she appeared in the stories. Maybe because he was often depicted as a judge of good and bad behavior while she was a gentler character who loved children and stood in their defense when it was time to hand out the gifts. She is almost always depicted as having bright blue eyes, red lips, snow white skin (sound familiar?) and blonde hair that is either braided or hangs around her shoulders in long curls. The original images show her dressed all in white with a crown decorated with silver and pearls. But now she is always seen wearing a blue and white cloak (sometimes with red trim) and she either wears her crown or a white fur-trimmed hat.

Now on to the actual story. It takes place in a Russian forest during the darkest days of winter, in early December. An elderly, childless couple lived in a small cabin where they worked hard for their survival yet were kind to their neighbors. But as they got older, they became lonely in their cold cabin and afraid because there was no one to care for them. But one day, after a terrible snowstorm, they went out to gather firewood. While they searched, they began to reminisce about their youth and how they loved to play in the snow and build snowmen and other snow figures. After they collected their wood, they went back outside and built a snow girl that had blue beads for eyes, a red ribbon for her mouth, and deep dimples on either side of her smile.

When they were done, the old man called the snow sculpture, “Our daughter, Snegurochka.”

This made his wife cry and then, suddenly a burst of static electricity ran through the snow and the air. They knew the power they felt meant that Father Frost was nearby. But when the sound stopped, they went back inside to get warm. What they didn’t realize was that Father Frost had watched them build the beautiful snow girl and felt sorry for them. Using his magic staff, he sent a burst of electrical magic through the cold air, toward the snow girl.

When dusk began to fall, the couple went back outside to take one more look at their snow girl… the daughter they never had. But to their absolute delight, the snow girl was gone and there stood a young girl dressed in white fur with blonde hair and blue eyes.

The girl said, “If it pleases, I will be your daughter and care for you as my mother and father.”

The couple hugged her and led her to their cabin. Once there, the family lived in joy for a few weeks. The young girl helped with the chores and took wonderful care of her new parents. Yet, sometimes, a distance would appear in her eyes and she’d leave them to hide in the forest with the trees and creatures. Since her parents understood that her presence was magical, they let her go and just hoped she’d return. And she always did. When it came time for the winter holidays, Snegurochka watched people who passed by the cabin on they way into town. Because her parents wanted her to be happy, they encouraged her to go to town and join in the celebrations and parties.

Snegurochka spent many hours in town, with the townspeople who welcomed her, and watched the joy of everyone who was enjoying the festivities. Townspeople offered her food and drink and asked her to dance. While she always took what was offered, she rarely danced, preferring to watch others. One day, a young man who played the flute in the dance band noticed the beautiful, lonely young woman. He fell in love immediately, talked to her, and over a few days they became inseparable–except for the times when she wandered the forest alone.

One day, her grandfather Ded Moroz (Father Frost) appeared before her in the forest. He warned her that Spring was coming and she might not want to make too many deep relationships. But Snegurochka was so happy with her young man, her parents, and all the friends she’d made in town, she shrugged off his warnings.

Father Frost had no option other than to watch her run back to town to see her young man and her new friends.

A few months later, Spring came again. As Snegurochka left her parents’ cabin to meet her young man at the edge of the forest, she heard him playing his flute and ran toward him. The music was so lovely, it made her cry. They were both so happy to see each other that they ran into each others’ arms. Except she forgot about Father Frost’s warning. The moment she left the forest’s shade, her feet melted. Then, a few moments, later she vanished into a puddle of water. The young man was devastated and went to tell her parents. The elderly couple was heartbroken, but they also understood how the magic worked. They’d always known their snow daughter wouldn’t be able to stay with them forever.

But Father Frost was watching. The moment the Snow Maiden melted, he caught the ice wind that rose up as she disappeared and sent it to the northern lands where she regained her human body. Now, the legends say that Snegurochka and Father Frost spend three season in the northern lands, but when the cold winds blow south, they return to the cabin to visit her parents… and all of her friends. Then they bring happiness and presents to the good children of the town on New Year’s Eve.

The Hungry {Romance} Writer: Cream of Chicken & Wild Rice Soup

Everyone in the house is fighting some kind of virus. While no one is full-on sick, we’re all tired and just not feeling 100%. But we’re all still eating and working which means it’s time for one of my favorite winter meals, Cream of Chicken & Wild Rice Soup. This is an easy recipe to make and tastes even better the next day. It also ensures that we get enough protein and fat to help us stay healthy and keep up our energy. If I’m feeling ambitious, I’ll search for and add peeled, diced parsnips into this soup for an extra shot of Vitamin C, B9, as well as potassium, folate, and iron. I also love to serve this soup with my homemade Irish Soda Bread with lots of butter. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and get a chance to play in the snow or sand, depending on where you live.

It's perfect on a cold winter's night when you want to eat in front of the fire.Course SoupKeyword Winter SoupPrep Time 20 minutes minutesCook Time 1 hour hour 15 minutes minutesServings 12Calories 265kcalIngredients1 pound chicken breasts2 Tablespoons olive oildash Kosher salt and pepper4 Tablespoons salted butter1/2 cup carrots peeled and diced1/2 onion diced1/2 cup celery diced1 clove garlic minced1/2 cup flour1 cup wild rice5 cups chicken broth divided1 12-ounce can of evaporated milksalt and pepper to tasteInstructionsPreheat the oven to 350℉. Line a baking sheet with tin foil. Place the chicken on the baking sheet. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake for 15 minutes. Turn the chicken and sprinkle with more salt and pepper. Bake for another 15 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. Shred the chicken and set aside.In a stockpot over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the carrots, celery, and onion and saute for 15 minutes. Let the carrots soften and the onions begin to caramelize. Stir in the garlic and saute for 1 minute.Stir in the flour and keep stirring until the flour is fragrant and brown and a roux begins to form. Stir in 4 cups of the chicken broth. Bring to a simmer and add the chicken. Once that's stirred in, add the wild rice. Bring to a simmer again. Cover and cook for 20-30 minutes, or until the wild rice is cooked through.Once the rice is fully cooked, stir in the can of evaporated milk. Bring to a simmer again and cook for another 5 minutes. If the soup is too thick, add the rest of the broth (there should be 1 cup left). Only add in however much you want to get your desired consistency. Add more salt and pepper, to taste. Serve hot.The next day, when you reheat the soup, it will be thick. Reheat the soup on the stove before adding in any more broth. Once the soup is hot it will thin a bit and then you can add more broth for a thinner soup, if desired.

Just Add Love Cover Reveal

The holidays are over, so that means the stores are gearing up for the next big thing. And in this part of the world, that means Valentine’s Day. In fact, Valentine’s Day candy went on sale on Christmas Eve, so the stores are probably already gearing up for Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day. Sarah Munro’s Sinus Relief Steam Bath

The holidays are over, but the winter illness season has just begun. This new recipe, an herbal steam bath for your sinuses, can naturally open clogged sinuses and relieve the pain from upper respiratory infections. The soothing effects can help you sleep, even with a stuffed up nose. You can use any essential oil you like, such as rosemary, tea tree, peppermint, or lavender oils, but I prefer Tea Tree oil since it has antiseptic properties. I also like the way it smells.

For those of you new to this series, Sarah Munro, the heroine in ONE DARK WISH, the second book in the Deadly Force series, is an 18th century historian who inherited a collection of colonial-era herbal and homeopathic remedies. And, in this blog space, I’ve been sharing her recipes with you all. I’m adding this recipe to this collection because Tea Tree oil is respected for its cooling and anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. The scent is soothing and can help relax the sinus passages even during the worst cold.

Ingredients:

4 drops Tea Tree essential oil1/4 cup sea salt1/2 cup dried herbs (rosemary, peppermint, and lavender)6 cups boiling water

Directions for Herbal Sinus Relief Steam BathNOTES: if using this for a child under 18, omit the essential oil. And if you feel hot or lightheaded or feel nauseous or have trouble breathing, stop the treatment. In a glass bowl, stir together the essential oil, sea salt, and herbs. Transfer to a glass jar with a tight-sealing lid.USAGE: Add 1 Tablespoon of the herbal salt to a large bowl. Pour the boiling water over the herbal salt. Stir for 1 minute. Then lean over the bowl so your face is about 10 inches from the water. Cover your head with a towel to trap the steam and breathe in the steam for no more than 10 minutes. Light My Fire is Leaving Soon

I can’t believe January is half over. I swear I’m still cleaning up random holiday decorations and putting away the Thanksgiving dishes. But I didn’t want the month to go by without mentioning, again, the Light My Fire Charity Anthology.

Sweeter Than Fiction: A Bookstore to Remember

My husband and his six siblings grew up on a sea island off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. When he was in high school in downtown Charleston, long before the fancy shops and name brand stores appeared after Hurricane Hugo, King Street was not the shopping mecca it is now. There were stores like the classic record shop and a Woolworth’s with a counter restaurant, as well as lots of antique shops on Lower King. And no one went north of Calhoun Street to shop on Upper King Street. King Street looked nothing like it does today with Anthropologie and Louis Vuitton boutiques.

So when I heard there was a special bookstore opening up on King Street, I was excited and intrigued. There is already a well-known, popular bookstore on King Street called Buxton Books. But as a librarian and a romance author, I wanted to know more. Luckily, a few weeks ago while we were visiting family for New Year’s, we found the store, Sweeter Than Fiction. What I didn’t realize was that it was a bookstore devoted to both romance novels and everything Taylor Swift (I’m not sure how I missed those two huge details!). Of course, the moment we entered the store, my son said to my husband and son-in-law, “This is very pink.” So they left to do something else, leaving me and my daughter to stare in shock at the beauty around us. I’ll let this carousel tell that story.

This charming store is truly devoted to all things Taylor Swift and romance novels. As you can see by the photos, there are lots of books and other merchandise, including tote bags, pen cases, notebooks, water bottles, etc. There’s also a cute couch area where girls can take Instagram/TT photos with their friends. While the books on the shelves are mostly Young Adult/New Adult fantasy/romantasy/paranormal novels, there are plenty of romcoms and other contemporary romances. And the store can order anything else you prefer. Also, they are becoming known for their in-person book signings. I’d recommend you follow them on Instagram or TT (for as long as that lasts) and jump quickly when the signing tickets go on sale. And I can only imagine how crowded this store will be during YA’LL Fest, the city’s Young Adult book festival held every year in November.

If you ever get the chance to visit this lovely city, I highly recommend visiting this bookstore. Also, if you can, please follow and support them on social media. My greatest fear is that these small, independent bookshops won’t be able to compete against the large online retailers. There’s nothing more wonderful than roaming a city street, in a new city, and stumbling upon a jewel of a store that sells romance novels and celebrates everything having to do with Happily Ever Afters. The very idea is Sweeter Than Fiction.
