Foot in Mouth Disease- A Defense for Job’s Wife

You may be familiar with the phrase, ‘to stick one’s foot in one’s mouth’ or more modernly ‘open mouth, insert foot.’ As a teenager, I had a best friend to whom I would endearingly say, ‘open mouth, switch feet.’

Job’s wife got a bad case of foot in mouth disease and the poor woman has paid for it ever since.

During sermons, you may have heard the speakers make such comments as, ‘I don’t know why nothing happened to her.’ Really? Nothing happened to her?

I’d like to give you four reasons why...

Picnic with an Angel- A short, short story

I entered this short story into a contest last year, and I thought I would share it with you now.

Enjoy.

Picnic with an Angel

Like a little child in a field of wild flowers, I skipped from the parking garage elevator carrying a picnic basket, similar to the ones Yogi Bear absconded in those old cartoons. The mouth-watering smells drifted from the wicker hamper – fried chicken, fresh rolls, banana pudding – all her favorites. I thought of my wife’s long blond tresses curled around her sparkl...

Why I write (and read) Christian Fiction.

Recently I read a blog post by a young woman called, Why I don’t read Christian Fiction. I did agree with some of her points, but some I didn’t.

Why do I write Christian Fiction?

Writing Christian fiction gives me a way to fulfill the Great Commission. In Acts 1:8 and Mark 16:15 (and other scriptures) Jesus commands the church to preach the gospel to every creature, teaching them to observe all things… you know the rest.  However I have a hard time speaking to people. I can’t hardly talk to s...

My Reading List

What am I reading right now?

Love Finds You in Valentine, Nebraska by Irene Brand

Love Finds You in Miracle, Kentucky by Andrea Boeshaar

Why?

I discovered this collection of novel projects by a publisher where they supply the location and three ideas and the writers supplies a contemporary 30,000 word novel set in that location and containing those three items.

I chose these particular books because they are similar in type- contemporary Christian romances set in real locations.

I haven’t rea...

My First Rejection Letter

Yesterday morning, I received my first rejection letter from a literary agent. Was I disappointed? Or course, I was. But this agent took the time to read my proposal and that was exciting. I am so very grateful to this agent for offering a constructive critique of my work. It will only make me a better writer.

You see agents or editors don’t have to respond. And they don’t have to explain their reasons, but this agent did. She used some of her valuable minutes to tell me exactly why she would...

My Writing Journey

Join me.

Why, you say?

As a child, writing and reading were two of my weakest subjects. By the time I graduated high school, my GED scores told another story. I placed 99% in reading skills and 96% in writing skills.

So what changed?

I was introduced to Jesus, and suddenly I had something worth reading and writing about.

I can still remember the first story I wrote. Well, only the basic premise- something about a pig, a rainbow, and God’s promises.

I also remember a “series” my sister and I w...
