It's a-LIVE! Get your copy of Buried Today! (And Possibly A Free Book)

Welcome to the 15h of October and how we have been waiting for this day!

Today, the best book I have ever written goes live and I hope you're all super stoked to read it. What? You didn't get your copy yet? No problem!!!

Blurb:

Home is where the heart is ... or the hatred.

You can feel the love and care someone puts into their home just by walking into it. Equally, you can feel the hatred and malice when you step into a home where dark deeds have been done.

Alex and his team of so-called paranormal investigators are given the opportunity of a lifetime when they are able to film inside one of the most haunted, and cursed, locations in their area.

The Jackson Mansion.

The thing that makes this mansion truly unique is that it is built completely underground. Determined to uncover the dark secrets of the mansion's past, and prove himself a notable investigator, Alex doesn't care what it takes. The mansion, however, has other ideas, as well as some rather restless occupants.

I have been fretting about this book for months, trying to ensure that it is absolutely perfect for my readers and I am proud of what I am giving you today!

Buried!

I cannot even begin to thank the people who have made this absolutely amazing dream of mine come true but mostly I just want to thank my sister Jackie who has just been an absolute superstar through this entire process and has given me more support than I could ever ask for! Thank you so much Jax!

For those who would like an additional little something to read - Toni, my amazing #Authorbestie - is offering an eCopy of Resilient to anyone who posts a review of Buried on Goodreads and emails me a screenshot to sianbclaven@gmail.com

Winner to be announced in the November Newsletter so you have time!

Resilient Blurb:

What would you do if you were the last person on Earth?

Resilient – it’s what I need to be to survive this.

I don’t know what happened, but the Africa I wake up to is not the friendly one I’m used to. Deathly silence and hollow-eyed corpses are all that greet me when I finally come to.

What happened? How will I survive?

I find out the hard way that I am not ready for the answers … or what comes next.

Thanks again to all my amazing readers who make this so worthwhile! I am so proud to give you Buried and cannot wait to give you more tantalizing and freakish classic horror stories.

Forever yours

Sian B. Claven

October Newsletter

It's the most wonderful time of the yeeaaarrrr!!!

As a horror author this is my favourite season, not just because everyone loves horror books doubly as much at this time but because it's MY season! The season where what I write is acceptable... mostly.

But before we skip ahead to talking about all the awesome things happening in October, let's talk about the awesome things that happened in September!!!!

Comic-Con Africa 2019

Comic-Con is my favourite event of the year. It's a time I get to market my books, check out some amazing artists and writers, hang out with the coolest fans but I also get to by myself A LOT of awesome presents for a year's worth of hard work. Okay, so this year I went a bit overboard! If you check out my facebook album in the group you'll see I may have bought... a few... pops and stuff. A FEW!!!!!!!

From day one to day four I had an absolute blast, sharing a stall next to my #AuthorBestie Toni Cox and my best friend Darren Cox as well as having two of the most amazing assistants ever! We had a blast, we laughed, we cried, we cried because we were laughing so hard. By the end of Comic-Con I was completely bushed and had no regrets.

Some of my highlights of Con included meeting Author Dani Rene! Being on my first ever panel where I got to discuss the joys of writing and what I do as an author. Seeing Ashleigh Giannocarro at her first Comic-Con as an author where she was signing with Jason Hes. Hanging out with all the talented authors and of course, the pops!

Buried Book Launch

On Friday, 27th September, we all joined evil forces and ransacked Skoobs Theatre of Books at Montecasino for a Pre-Launch party for Buried! It was an absolute success and I'm really happy with the turnout. So many wonderful old friends, and new ones turned up to help me celebrate my best book baby! For those of you who couldn't make it, it was live-streamed on my reader group so feel free to go watch it so you too can be a part of the magic!

A special SPECIAL thanks to the following people who made my book launch an absolute dream come true.

Jackie - Because this literally wouldn't have happened without you! Thank you for being my #1 fan and greatest support structure.

Toni - Thanks for always having my back #AuthorBestie and for putting in so much effort as MC of the evening.

Jamie & Wendy - Thanks for the photos and live streaming the event!

Skoobs - Thanks for letting us host there

Jann - Who doesn't do horror but showed up early to help set up and then read from my book for me.

Kim - For being so supportive, always, and for featuring me and live streaming via Tango with Text.

Deborah - For the warm welcome and awesome questions.

Darren - For packing, loading, dropping off, lifting, packing up and doing everything in between! I appreciate your help, friendship and muscles so much!

A special thanks to everyone who attended. You had some really interesting questions to ask and your support means the world to me. And of course, there was the traditional tequila which is always fun.

Talking about Buried - It's ALMOST TIME!

Yup! It's almost time for Buried to be released to the masses! We are counting down the days until October 15th, and I know a few people who are currently SCREAMING for the book! I cannot wait for you to read it! It is simply amazing.

If you haven't already, you can pre-order your copy via Amazon, Nook, Kobo or Itunes! BUT WAIT... THERE IS MORE...

So what now?

Well, now we continue! I continue to put my everything into my writing and deliver the best stories that I can come up with. This year certainly hasn't been an easy one but I am proud of how far I have come from where I was and I'm super excited for Hex and Merry Meow to be published along with some super-secret projects that are coming out soon. I have so many amazing stories lined up for the next three years that I don't think I need to worry about running out of ideas because my brain just churns them out like butter apparently!

One thing I will note that I struggle with is getting reviews! I cannot stress how important reviews are to independently published authors like myself. It's how we get on the map, it's how new readers discover us and I know a hell of a lot of people have read my book. If you could take ten minutes and write a review it would be appreciated so much!

That being said I'm going to leave you guys with a few book recommendations as well as some great giveaways to look out for.

FEATURED AUTHOR - JO MACGREGOR

Living on the edge can be murder.

Garnet McGee returns to her small Vermont hometown, all set to finish her master’s thesis in psychology, and convinced that the paranormal experiences of recent months are now behind her. Then she stumbles across a body in the strangest of places, and starts getting unsettling visions of the woman’s life and death.

Local police assume it was suicide, but Garnet is sure it was murder.

Egged on by her eccentric mother, Garnet starts investigating. Police Chief Ryan Jackson is intrigued by the “readings” she gets about the case, but others are determined to stop her amateur sleuthing. Meanwhile some inexplicably strange things are happening at home.

Garnet is determined to find out who killed the beautiful woman loved by so many, but that will mean taking the leap into trusting not only others, but also her own growing psychic abilities. Yet every vision puts her in greater danger. As she gets close to discovering the truth, Garnet realizes that the killer will do whatever it takes to keep the truth hidden.

Even if that means killing again.

Gripping and unpredictable, The First Time I Fell is a suspenseful and haunting murder mystery with a psychic twist.

Great reading for fans of Paula Hawkins, Gillian Flynn, Ruth Ware and Liane Moriarty.

This is the second book in the Garnet McGee series that started with The First Time I Died, but can be read as a standalone novel.

So this month is all about Buried because it is the best book I have written (I think I've only mentioned this a million times since I finished writing it).

However, there is more than just that happening. I have Comic-Con Africa happening in September and cannot wait to see my Johannesburg fans there! I'm on a panel for Comic-Con on Saturday and am so excited because it's the first one I am doing!

Aside from that, September also see's the pre-publish special launch party for Buried where I will have Limited Edition numbered and signed copies of the book available!

Consider this your personal invite!

Not in the country? I am going to livestream the launch from my Facebook group! So don't forget to join Nightmares & Spacehikers or you'll miss out!

FEATURED AUTHOR - KATHERINE GILBERT

A cursed ring. A forgotten grave. A magical enemy. Can Annabella escape her family's fate?

Annabella has done her best to put behind her all memories of her childhood being raised as an unwanted ward in the gothic family mansion. As the secretary to the flamboyant Errol, Duke of Winchester, she's seen the world and avoided her family's clutches.

But now she must return to that elegantly-decayed, antebellum house on the historic Battery in Charleston, South Carolina, where the "moonlight and magnolias" atmosphere hides some deadly family secrets. Returning for the wake of her aged relative, Henrietta, who hasn't left her South of Broad showplace for decades, Annabella walks into the chilly embrace of her Cousin Beatrix and the woman's much-too-attractive new assistant, Armand, whose words of encouragement and warning keep arriving inexplicably in her mind.

In just a few hours, the house reclaims her. She finds herself waking up in her deceased relative's bed and clothes, Henrietta's ring on an unremovable chain around her neck. And, even as she begins to realize that magic is real and her friends and Armand hope to save her with it, it's starting to look as though the terrifying mansion and its demonic secrets may never let her leave.

Katherine Gilbert, author of the quirky urban fantasies Protecting the Dead and Unearthly Remains, shows a more serious side in this chilling Southern Gothic tale (but not without a bit of quirk!). On a Gilbert wackiness scale of 1-to-10 sarcastic talking cats*, this one is about a 3.

*Warning: Not all stories contain talking cats. Wackiness may take other forms.

As excited as I am that Buried is so amazing, I also cannot forget that before Buried I wrote an ALMOST as good book called Belladonna that is being released on the 15th September! Please feel free to go pre-order and enjoy this spooky tale about Mermaids with a taste for blood.

Meeting Eleanor changes Patrick Knowle's life as he knows it.

His only passion has been the ocean right up until meeting the enchanting heiress to a fortune almost as big as his own. Life simply couldn’t get better until Patrick starts seeing the pale woman in the water.

Mysteriously, people in their coastal town start to drown in the most bizarre ways.

After being attacked himself, Patrick goes on a quest to unearth the mermaids' secret, and ultimately face the consequences of his own ignorant actions.

This months writing advice:

Every now and then I'd like to include some writing advice for those fans of mine that are starting out as authors or at least considering it.

This months advice is to start this journey with patience. You cannot build a fan base overnight, in fact that so rarely happens. It takes a lot of dedication and patience and work harder than you have ever known. In fact, I can honestly say that the first two years of being an author I was lucky I had any sales at all considering the amount of work I put in then versus the amount of work I put it now.

But the trick is to persevere. Even when you really don't want to and everything is telling you to quit, push through because it gets so much better.

With that being said I'm going to say ado for now! I have lots of prep to do for the launch, for a book that's being released in November and of course for Comic-Con!

For those of you who are interested I am closing off with an excerpt from Buried followed by some awesome giveaways you must look out for this month!

Always lock your doors!

EXCERPT FROM BURIED CHAPTER 9

1892

Wallace Jackson had just inherited a mansion back in his family’s hometown and he was curious about it, specifically about its morbid history. There was a rumor circulating that the Jackson Mansion was cursed and that in each generation a Jackson family member was doomed to be a killer.

Wallace didn’t hold with such nonsense. He was a firm believer in science and fact, and there was no such thing as curses. Still, he travelled to the mansion and was delighted when he discovered it was built underground. He found a bedroom and made it his own, directing the servants on where to pack his goods before he went to explore the mansion. It would make an excellent place to conduct his experiments.

He lived at the mansion alone, preferring to be left in peace to work, while his family remained in Jackson where his children went to school. His wife had not been saddened by his departure; he was rarely home anyway and she knew how important his work was.

He turned one of the rooms into a laboratory of sorts and spent countless days working there. His meals were served there, his tea was served there, and eventually he moved his bed in there so that he wouldn’t waste any of his time at all. It was a dream come true for Wallace Jackson, and one he intended to continue to live until his last breath.

There was, however, a nagging feeling. Something in the pit of his stomach that made him question whether or not the mansion was complete. A little voice kept gnawing at him, telling him he had to expand the mansion, grow its reach.

So he called contractors in, told them what he wanted and set them to work. It would fall into his daily ritual. Eat, Work, Eat, Work, check on the progress of the building, Eat, Work and rest. Every day was the same as the one before and would be the same as the one that ensued.

Unfortunately, though, the construction quickly burned through his savings and he had to find alternative ways to make money. He knew there was a need for women to have abortions safely and without judgment and without the law interfering. He mentioned it to his servants and they brought forth the first girl desperate to have an abortion. She paid the price for it and Wallace executed the abortion skillfully, putting the tiny baby body into a jar. It was little more than a head, but he wanted to study it anyway, so these abortions would not be a complete waste.

There was an endless supply of women who needed his help and many came from the bigger cities under the guise that they were on a Christian retreat, or on holiday with friends, just to enlist his services. His plan worked perfectly; he was able to support his family in Jackson, his renovations of the mansion and his scientific studies. Senators brought mistresses, mayors brought daughters, and everyone in between came from miles around to use his abortion services.

Soon he had a fair collection of babies in jars that lined his laboratory and it got him to thinking about them. He wanted to dissect and study them.

He started with the earlier and smaller ones he preserved. He cut them open, examined what had developed and what had not, and made notes on each one.

It wasn’t long before he heard the voices of his ancestors talking to him, guiding him, telling him how to renovate the mansion and what to use the dead babies for.

Soon he experimented with attaching different body parts to the aborted babies to try and bring them back to life. He tried attaching them to each other and pulsating them with electricity. He tried attaching them to various animal bodies. Soon he began to order foreign creatures from out of the country to experiment on. He brought in various kinds of cats, dogs, exotic birds, and then started to bring creatures of varying kinds.

August Newsletter

The hardest part of being a creative person is the constant self doubt that you live in. The last few weeks have been incredibly hard for me regarding self doubt because I wrote what I consider my best book yet, Buried, and after that I felt hollow and wondered if I had it in me to write another book.

Everyone goes through this. This impostor syndrome.

The important thing is to not make any rash decisions during this time. I nearly did and looking back today, I would feel terrible if I had gone through with my idea that I shouldn't be an author anymore because I love writing stories more than anything in the world.

So if you're doubting yourself, or waiting for a sign, this is it. Get your butt in that chair and carry on writing, painting or singing because you CAN do it!

Have you Pre-Ordered Bullseye yet?

Imagine just sitting on a park bench, or walking down a street, or just sitting on your balcony enjoying a cup of coffee and suddenly you're dead. Shot in the head by a serial killer who likes his deadly aim, and collects pieces of your skin as a prize. Marking you as his Bullseye.

For those of you looking for other reads while waiting for my next release you can check out these amazing books:

The Ghost Sensitive

Sometimes a gift feels like a curse.

Chapter One

The Knowle family had been fishermen for as far back as the lineage could be traced, which was to Old Man Kristoff Knowle in the eighteen hundreds. They had always been fishermen, it was their bread and butter, and little had changed in that way over the centuries passed since Kristoff first stepped onto a boat in a last and desperate attempt to feed his family.

Presently, Patrick Knowle was the owner of Knowles Enterprises and, although he was the CEO of the company, he liked to get his hands dirty and get involved in the fishing himself. His family believed in leading by example.

A single man in his late thirties, Patrick had loved fishing with his Paw-Paw and his father as a child, and nothing had changed. Even on his weekends off he took out his yacht and went fishing, cooking whatever he caught for dinner that day.

He had a beautiful home on the ocean, and the only reason he had it was to entertain guests, or he would simply live on his boat, the way many of his family members had at some point or another in their history.

Many eligible women came to these parties hoping to ‘net’ Patrick into marrying them. Some were elegant ladies from rich families who wanted to make a good match, while others were rough and tumble fishing girls who shared his passion and wanted someone they could be happy with. None caught Patrick’s eye. He wasn’t lonely, not in the slightest; he just preferred his own company and didn’t want anyone infringing on his freedom. He liked being able to do what he liked, when he liked it, without having to answer to someone for something, or be responsible for another person. Even as CEO he didn’t consider himself ‘responsible’ for the employees and often told them, if they worked hard and did well, they would always have a job, it was that simple.

With the company catering to Patrick’s every whim, he left the more administrative duties to his younger sister who seemed to have a knack for it. Penelope had always been business-minded, not really caring for fishing other than knowing it brought in the money. She lived near Patrick, in an even fancier house. In fact, she bought Patrick his place to begin with, and she furnished and decorated it, and made sure it was stocked with food. She did everything for Patrick and all he had to do was fish, which was how he liked it.

The only occasions he would sacrifice time out from fishing was to visit his nephews, Horus and Jude. Sometimes he took them fishing with him. It was tradition in the family to pass down the fishing legacy and Patrick was very traditional. He wasn’t planning on having children of his own - God, he was too selfish to do that - so he had to ensure his nephews at least appreciated the love for fishing their family had.

His brother-in-law was a big shot lawyer in the city and he barely knew how to cast a line, therefore Patrick couldn’t leave it to him to teach the boys anything. If it were up to Kyle, he would have both boys become lawyers or doctors or something along those lines, but Patrick needed a male heir to take over the company, so he made it his prerogative to educate the boys better than that.

Horus wasn’t great at fishing, but loved his uncle and always looked forward to the outings. Jude took fishing seriously and kept a little notebook of the fish he caught, how much they weighed and how long they were. Both boys loved to gut the fish, as only boys could, really, and knew how to descale, debone and cook the catch.

Patrick took pride in knowing he was passing on this tradition and, with his nephews by his side, he never longed for children of his own.

_____

It was a bright sunny Saturday morning when Patrick decided to try his luck on his yacht. He felt today would be a good day for fishing, and he was seldom wrong. He showered and got dressed and took a stroll to the dock. He didn’t need to bring anything because his small yacht had everything stocked and ready for him to leave at a moment’s notice.

Casting off, he guided the vessel through the small marina he was in and headed to open waters. He didn’t have to go far, just far enough to forget about life for a while. He dropped anchor and set about getting his gear ready, popping open a can of beer and setting it beside his chair at the back of his yacht. He cast his line and sat down, enjoying the peace and quiet that the ocean had to offer him. Nothing could break this amazing peace, except a tug at his line, and that was a most welcome break.

He spent hours simply sitting there, playing with his line, waiting for something to take a bite, all the while letting his mind wander aimlessly.

Around noon his line tautened and he quickly grabbed it, yanking it back hard to hook the fish, before reeling it in. It was a strong one, but Patrick gently guided the rod this way and that, knowing when to reel and when to give slack, before he saw the fish rising to the surface.

Securing his rod in its holster in front of his chair so the fish couldn’t pull it into the water, Patrick quickly got his net and scooped the fish out of the ocean and onto the deck.

It flopped and flipped, desperate for air that only water could provide. It was a big blue-fin tuna, weighing at least fifty pounds and quite long. Patrick smiled brightly, careful not to let its fins cut him. He picked up his harpoon and speared it through the head; after a few moments and a few more stabs, the fish stopped moving.

Patrick was about to prepare to cast again when his phone went off and he checked it. It was a reminder for a party at his sister’s house that evening, a party he had to attend because it was for work. He sighed, glancing back at the open ocean longingly. He could easily just sail off and never look back if he didn’t have the company to worry about.

He went to the helm, hoisting anchor so he could sail back to civilisation, the bane of his existence. He would need time to prepare for a party, physically and mentally. He would have to be gracious, and nice, and polite, and engage in conversation. Hopefully he could steal away and talk fishing with his nephews for a while; that would at least make the party a little interesting.

_____

“You’re late,” Penelope hissed as she opened the door for him.

“Well, hello to you, too,” Patrick said, shrugging out of his jacket and hanging it up on a hook in the wall.

“Hurry up,” Penelope quipped, taking his arm and leading him into the entertainment room. “Look who has made an appearance,” she announced, and everyone cheered, many coming forward to greet Patrick and shake his hand.

Penelope let go of his arm and went off to do who-knows-what, leaving Patrick to mingle. Instantly talk turned to work and stock market shares and how poorly everyone seemed to be doing, except Patrick.

“Always a good run of luck, your family has had,” a rather drunk older man was saying. “From the first time your ancestor stepped onto a fishing boat to now your family has ruled the seas.”

“Like Triton or Neptune,” his elderly companion added excitedly, gazing up a Patrick.

Patrick gave a pained smile and nodded. “Indeed, we have been fortunate, but it’s all through hard work.”

“Sheer dumb luck,” the drunkard continued. “You’re lucky there’s always a demand for fish. You basically have your business handed to you on a silver platter.”

“Only if I have caught it myself,” Patrick joked, and everyone, including the drunkard, roared with laughter.

Patrick continued to talk to several people and quickly grew bored, wishing he was still out on the ocean. He had a tuna to gut when he got home; that was something to look forward to.

He spotted his nephews talking quietly in the corner of the room and excused himself to go speak to them.

“Uncle Patrick!” they cried joyously, launching at him with arms wide to hug him.

Patrick put his arms around his nephews and said, “You won’t believe what I caught today.”

“What?” Jude asked immediately.

“A blue fin tuna about this big.” Patrick let them go and held his hands apart to show them how big it had been.

They immediately gushed over his catch and asked him for details, which he happily provided.

“Boys,” Penelope said, “stop hogging your Uncle Patrick. He has guests to attend to.”

Patrick winked at them and said, “We’ll talk more later.”

He let Penelope guide him back to the boring guests still discussing business and the stock markets, things Patrick had absolutely zero interest in.

Eventually it all got too much and he excused himself again, this time heading to the balcony for a smoke. He leaned against the railing, looking out over the bay, and lit a menthol cigarette, taking a deep drag. As he exhaled, he looked down at the rocks below and wondered if he would die if he leapt over the balcony now.

Probably, he thought, since his head would be crushed. He would at the very least be in a lot of pain, if not crippled. He chuckled to himself about his absurd thoughts and took another deep drag of his cigarette, enjoying the warm smoke filling his lungs as the cold wind brushed against him from the water. It smelt of salt and fish and heaven, and Patrick got lost for a moment in the wonder and peace of it.

The sliding door opened and a beautiful young woman stepped onto the balcony to join him, fumbling around in her purse for her lighter, an unlit cigarette between her fingers.

“Here,” Patrick said gruffly, mildly irritated that his peace had been interrupted. He flicked his lighter on and held it out.

“Oh, thank you,” the young woman said, leaning in to light her cigarette, taking a drag as she leaned back, and then exhaled a cloud of smoke.

“So you’re Patrick,” she said. “I’m Eleanor.” She switched her cigarette to her other hand so she could hold out her right hand to shake his.

“Well, you know who I am,” Patrick commented. “It’s a pleasure,” he added in case she was someone important.

“You can drop the act,” Eleanor commented, moving to lean against the railing. “I can see you want to be here about as much as I do.”

“Which is not at all?” Patrick chuckled, taking a drag of his cigarette.

“My father forces me to go to these …” She paused, inhaling her drag of her cigarette and exhaling as she said, “… events.”

“My sister forces me; you’d think we were children.”

“Poor us,” Eleanor responded, watching him. “However would we live if they didn’t command our every move?”

“We wouldn’t,” Patrick confirmed with a nod. “We’d be hopelessly lost, probably left for dead somewhere.”

“Or having wild adventures no one ever dreamed of.”

“I’m not the adventurous type,” Patrick admitted, “but give me a boat, a fishing rod and the open sea, and I’m pretty much happy doing that.”

“So you really are all about fishing?” Eleanor asked, but it sounded rhetoric, so Patrick neither confirmed nor denied it. “What shall we do to pass the time?” Eleanor asked after Patrick snubbed out his cigarette.

“I should probably go back inside,” he confessed, “but I’m not entirely keen to do that.”

“Tell me about your fishing,” Eleanor said.

Patrick watched her for a moment and then moved away, collecting two chairs from the other side of the balcony and bringing them to where Eleanor stood.

“You may want to sit; according to my sister, once I start talking about fishing, I do not stop.”

“I like a passionate person,” Eleanor said, taking a seat on the chair, watching as he sat opposite her.

“So …” Patrick began, launching into the different kinds of fishing he liked to do, where he liked to fish and what he did with the fish he caught.

From there Eleanor asked about his family history and he told her how far back fishing went in the family and why it was such an important tradition.

Patrick was enthusiastic as he spoke because this was something he loved to talk about. Eleanor was so easy to talk to that he found he didn’t want to stop talking. She was engaging and asked all the right questions. She didn’t pretend to find him funny, or make stupid comments that irritated him. Hell, he even thought she was okay to look at as far as women went.

They were interrupted by the sound of the balcony door opening and his sister sweeping out. “Patrick. Eleanor. Here you two are. What on earth are you doing out here in the cold?”

“Discussing work,” Eleanor said without missing a beat. “I find your brother fascinating, Penelope.”

Patrick gave her a small smile and Penelope looked between them with raised eyebrows.

“You are, however, right; it is getting quite chilly outside. Patrick, please excuse me for just a moment while I go get my coat and we can continue our conversation.”

Patrick nodded and stood up as she did, ever the well brought up gentleman. He waited until she disappeared before he turned his attention to his sister.

“I’m surprised,” Penelope said, “but pleased. She’s a good match.”

“Why does your mind automatically go there, Penny,” he asked, “when you know perfectly well I have no interest in that department.”

“In continuing our blood line? Our heritage? Our family name?” Penelope shot at him.

“What is this? The Dark Ages? It’s got nothing to do with family names, and all to do with stocks and bonds and you’re well aware of that,” Patrick snapped.

“And in our family, it’s about the name,” Penelope snapped back. “As you well know, in the will and the company documents, the company passes to a male heir.”

“Good thing you had boys then,” Patrick pointed out.

Penelope shook her head. “You know what, there is no point with you.”

She went inside without another word and Patrick was glad she left. He found his packet of cigarettes and lit another one, inhaling deeply. He had gone from exuberantly talking about fishing to being extremely grumpy because of his sister and her insane expectations. He was who he was; she needed to accept that now.

He returned to the railing and leaned his arms on it, looking out at the reflection of lights on the water and listening to the gentle laps of the waves below. He looked down at the rocks, again imagining falling, when he saw it.

It was like a reflection of light, but it was moving in the water. Like something floating; no, it was definitely something swimming just beneath the surface and, whatever it was, iridescently shining as it moved. It was attached to something pale … was that a person? It was moving so quickly he could not tell. It attained the rocks and two hands reached out above the surface. It was definitely a person. Had someone fallen in the water?

Patrick leaned over the railing to get a better look and what he saw made his mouth nearly drop to the floor. A girl, in the freezing water, attempted to pull herself out. The waves were too strong, though, and kept drawing her back.

He needed to help her.

“I’ll get help!” he yelled, and she quickly looked up at him.

She must have lost her grip on the rocks because she plummeted into the water once more with a gasp of surprise.

Patrick ran into the party area and yelled, “Quickly, someone help! There’s someone in the water.”

He didn’t wait for an answer as he rushed through the guests, passed his sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and his nephews, and out of the house. He knew the path well and it didn’t take him long to navigate down towards where the rocks started.

He leaned over as far as he could to see, but there was no one. He kicked his shoes off and dived into the water, his body screaming from the sudden shock of the icy water enveloping him. He swam towards where he had seen her, where he thought he had seen her, but couldn’t see anything in the darkness. He heard shouts above him and looked up, noticing people leaning over the balcony and watching him.

“Can you see a girl?” he called.

“No!” various voices yelled back to him.

A strong wave hit him in the back and he slammed into the rocks.

Everything went black

Chapter One

My bed is so soft and warm. It’s like I’m in a cocoon, a deep one. One that I don’t want to get out of. Everything is safe and secure and I feel as though I could stay here forever.

Then that nagging voice inside my head starts and it tells me I’m going to be late for work and I groan softly.

I can feel him shift around under the covers and I know my groan has stirred him. I can feel his arm snake it’s way under the covers and wrap around my body as he shifts me closer to him with a quick swoop. I giggle sleepily and give a big yawn. It’s harder to get out of bed with my back pressed against him, knowing how safe I am in his arms.

Everything I am, and everything I want, is right here in this moment.

My alarm goes off and it’s his turn to groan as I slither away from him, my arm braving the cold to turn my alarm off. I sit up in bed and let the covers fall off of me.

“Take the day off.”

“I took yesterday off.” I comment, swinging my legs out of bed and sliding my feet into my slippers.

“Claim a sick day again,” he mumbles.

“I can’t,” I say softly, “I’m running out of sick days to claim love.”

“Fine” he breathes out and turns over, flipping the covers off of his body and sitting up, “I’ll make coffee then.” He stood up and wrapped his gown around his body before leaving the room.

I stretch before I stand up and my spine clicks into place as I do so. It’s orgasmic. I stand up and go to the mirror. I look like shit. I always do.

There are dark bags under my eyes even though I am sleeping, at least for now I’m sleeping, who knows how long that will last. My hair isn’t just bed messy, it’s out of control curly messy and I sigh, because taming it is mission impossible. I start by brushing out my hair and tying it in an untidy bun, the only thing I think I can ‘pull off.’

I smell the coffee as I brush my teeth and I sigh. Coffee and a smoke before work, that’s just the way I like to start my day. I rinse my mouth and go get dressed before I head out to the kitchen where Jack is waiting for me.

Jack, my beautiful Jack, the one person in this world who completely understands me in every sense. I sit down at the kitchen island and reach for my coffee, sipping it slowly so I don’t burn. Jack watches me, the small smile playing on his lips, reaching his ears.

“Stay” he says quietly, “Stay with me.”

“I do stay with you,” I mumble, knowing that’s not at all what he means.

“No man,” he says, “Spend the day with me.”

“I already said I can’t.” He pouts at me and I shake my head at him, “You know I can’t. I spent yesterday with you.”

“I want to spend everyday of my life with you,” Jack says.

“You do,” I point out, “But we need to pay the bills so I have to go to work.”

Jack continues to pout and I have to admit, it’s really tempting to stay with him. Especially after yesterday.

*~*~*~*~*

The Previous day

I woke up slowly and found Jack sitting on the edge of the bed, watching me.

“You were crying in your sleep again,” He whispered to me. I reach up and touch my face to feel it is wet. It’s the nightmares again. It’s been awhile since I’ve had one but when I do, I always wake up crying.

The more I wake up the more I remember the nightmare I had. He was there.

My rapist.

He was laughing at me for being foolish enough to think someone I dated would not drug my drink, take me home and use me to do whatever they wished. Then he sat and laughed at me as I tried to move, as I tried to get away from him but I was still drugged, I couldn’t quite control my body.

Awake now I could still hear his laughter echoing through my head and I knew that Jack was sure of why I was crying. He knew what had happened to me those eight years ago. He knew what my then boyfriend had done to me and he knew I wasn’t over it.

How do you get over your own rape?

I had tried. Lord knows I had tried my best. Alcohol, drugs, rocky relationships - I had tried it all in an effort to numb the pain but nothing did, that pain always came bubbling back up to the surface one way or another.

Like today. Days like today when it is all fresh in my mind and I can feel my heart sinking deep inside of me, and I feel like I’m never going to surface from the darkness. I fell back into bed straight away and Jack pulled the covers over my head. He crawled into bed and laid there with me, staring at me under the covers as I cried and cried, letting my emptiness spill down my face in the form of salty tears.

I paused at some point to message Ryan, my boss, and tell him I wasn’t feeling well and wouldn’t be coming in.

Again? He had responded, “It’s the forth time this month.” He had sent shortly afterward.

Sorry.

That was all I could text back before I collapsed back into my bed and started to cry again. It wasn’t long before the hunger set in. I always got hunger when I was sad and Jack was quick to appease me, getting out of bed and going to make all my favourite desserts for breakfast.

He brought it to the bed for me and I sat there, crying and eating, as I always did when I was like this. Jack simply sat by my side, rubbing my back as I ate my sixth helping of strawberry ice cream.

Then I slept. Once full I curled up in bed and cried myself to sleep. My stomach aching from all the sugar but nonetheless I slept deeply and without interruption and only woke up in the afternoon again. Jack was waiting for me to wake up, he had made me lunch and fed me as soon as I sat up. Then we sat there in silence, curled up in bed for the rest of the day,

*~*~*~*~*

Current Day

“Did you hear me?”

I look up and see Jack staring at me and I blush, “I’m so sorry, I was in another world.”

“I gathered,” he said, smiling, “I said you had better get going or you’re going to be late again.”

Late. That’s another thing that I always was and I hated it. It took so much to get me going and if I didn’t have Jack, well I’d be absolutely lost. I feel a pang of anxiety as I look at the time and I quickly get up, downing the rest of my coffee and snubbing out my cigarette.

“I’ll see you later, bye” I call as I make a beeline for the door, grabbing my laptop backpack and swinging it onto my back before I exit through the door. I hear a faint and sad bye from Jack just before the door shuts behind me. I run down the corridor, no time for the elevator today and as I take the stairs two at a time, I hate myself for being fat and eating so much. I pant for air as I reach the bottom and try to catch my breath, my throat burning and my nose starting to run as I push open my buildings door and start to fight my way through the crowded pavement, making my way towards work.

It takes me almost twenty minutes before I reach the front door of my office building and I don’t have to look at my watch to realize just how late I am. There is no way I’m taking the stairs to the fifteenth floor so I patiently wait for the elevator to ding before I climb inside.

The elevator music does nothing for my anxiety as I stare above the doors as the number slowly climbs until I reach my floor. I rush out and the first thing Karen, the receptionist, says to me is, “You’re late for the meeting!”

“Meeting?” I asked panicked as I slip my bag off my back and drop it behind her desk.

“Main boardroom, new staff.” She says simply, moving my laptop out of view as I rush down the corridor and into the main boardroom. Everyone goes quiet as I walk in and Ryan glares at me. I take the only open seat next to a woman with long black hair that I don’t recognize.

“As I was saying before Sarah walked in,” He cleared his throat for emphasis, “Was that we are welcoming two new members to the team today and I want you all to make them feel welcome. Allow me to introduce Michelle and Darren.”

Everyone gave a small clap and the woman sitting next to me smiled at everyone, pausing at me and winking. That was when I noticed the man to her left was also someone I didn’t recognize. He also smiled and nodded as he met everyones gaze.

“Michelle is a self-published author who is joining our editorial team and will be working with Sarah while Darren will be joining our host of literary agents representing various authors.”

Everyone started to clap again and I look at Michelle, the woman sitting to my side, and she grins at me. I blush and look away. I can’t believe I have to work with someone new, this is just the worst thing that could happen to me. I hate that awkwardness of getting to know someone and having to learn their ways and habits.

The meeting concluded and I get up, going over to Ryan.

“Written warning for being late. Next time, I fire you.”

I fight back tears and swallow, nodding. Ryan looks at me and sighs and says, “Everything okay at home?”

“Yes.” I say sadly, trying my best not to cry. “Ryan, do I have to work with Michelle. Can’t you team her up with someone else.”

“Sarah, you’re great at your job but there is no one else to team her up with. You won’t even notice she’s there I’m sure.”

I nod, knowing it’s silly to try and fight this. I will just have to suck it up, like I do most things, and move on from here. I was stuck with Michelle and would have to put on a smile and just pretend I was okay with it.

I go and fetch my laptop from Karen and go to my office. Michelle and Darren are in there and I pause at the door. Darren is busy helping her set up her laptop and decorate her desk, they are talking quietly to each other and I can’t make out what they are saying.

“Oh hello,” Michelle says to me as she sees me.

“Hi there,” Darren says, turning around to look at me.

I swallow hard and give my best smile that I can muster and say, “Hi, I’m Sarah.”

“I’ve heard all about you.” Michelle says, limping forward and holding her hand out so I can shake it. I take her hand in mine, it’s smaller than my hand but most woman’s are. Darren shakes my hand next and he has a firm grip. I stand there awkward for a moment before I move to my desk and start setting up my own laptop.

My desk is littered with papers and I can see Ryan has added several manuscripts to my ‘in’ tray since I’ve been away. No wonder he was pissed with me. I vowed to get through all the new manuscripts before I left for the day to redeem myself. I didn’t want Ryan hating me. Of course, he probably already did. Jack suspected he did and that was why he always picked on me, but I couldn’t verify that. He could just be a grumpy man constantly for all I know.

Darren and Michelle share a passionate kiss before he leaves to go sort out his own space and I’m left alone with Michelle. I can feel the awkwardness between us and I just know she already hates me. She moves some papers around her desk and then looks at me, catching me staring at her. I quickly look away and go back to my own work, staring to sift through the various manuscripts until I find one that seems interesting. I settle down to edit it.

When I’m busy working I don’t notice the time go by and on any normal day I wouldn’t stop until it was a time to go home but my train of thought is interrupted by Darren coming back. He’s carry a brown paper bag and it smells good. My stomach rumbles slightly but I ignore it, trying to focus on my forth manuscript for the day.

“I didn’t know if you would want something,” He says and I look up to see he is talking to me, “So I got you an egg mayo like Mickey.”

I blush crimson and say quietly, “Thanks, you didn’t have to do that.”

“Oh I know but since you two are going to be working together I thought it would be cool.” He holds a sandwich wrapped in wax paper out to me and I take it, setting it on my table. He hands Michelle her sandwich and sits beside her, unfolding his.

“Well?” he asks, looking at me again, “Eat.”

I can feel how hot my face is as I say quietly, “Thank you, I’ll… I’ll…” I look around for words, “I’ll eat it a little later.”

“Suit yourself,” He says, taking a giant bite of his sandwich.

As I work he and Michelle talk about how they need to unpack when they get home, having just moved to the area. I find it fascinating as their talk turns from what needs to be done around the house to what Michelle needs to do for her new book. She talks to Darren so passionately that I am immediately reminded about how Jack and I talk to each other.

Darren leaves again and Michelle and I return to our silent work. My sandwich laying on my table until it’s time to go home, when I pack it into my bag. I’m not sure if Michelle sees me do it or not and I’m worried now she has, and that she is judging me. God I can’t wait to go home and just be with Jack.

As I am about to leave I pause, not sure what to say to Michelle before I go. Do I say goodbye? Do I congratulate her on her first day? I haven’t said anything else to her the whole day. I can feel the anxiety setting in and I turn quickly to leave when I bump into Darren.

“Oh going already?” he says.

“It’s the end of the day,” I mumble.

“Indeed it is,” He says with a bright smile, “I’m here to get Mickey.”

“Okay,” I say quietly.

“Uh, you’re in the middle of the door.” He says, rubbing the back of his head with his hand and standing aside so I can pass. I pass him quickly, and don’t look back as I rush down the hall and into the elevator. I can imagine what they are saying about me and half an hour later when I get back to my house, Jack confirms it.

“Definitely talked about you,” He says as he cooks dinner. He’s feeling lazy tonight so we’re having hot dogs. I’m sitting at the counter watching him, having just told him everything that happened today. The egg mayo sandwich was devoured as soon as I got home because I was starving and I couldn’t wait for the hot dogs to be done so I could gobble them down as well. I have a pint of cola in front of me, and I’m sipping it slowly, savoring it even though I know it’s not doing anything to help me lose weight.

“Don’t think about it,” Jack says suddenly and I look up at him, “Think about what?” I ask.

“About losing weight, I love you just the way you are.” He smiles and I return it. “Besides,” He says, “There’s no point. You’ll always be big no matter what you do.”

I nod solemnly and down my cola, going to refill my glass.

“Feeling down?” Jack asks, “cause that’s okay. You can totally feel down.”

“Feeling overwhelmed” I say, sitting back in my spot as he starts to make my hot dogs. Another night he isn’t hungry so he makes me four. He sits the plate in front of me and I start shoveling them down, barely breathing between the three large bites it takes me to finish one. I can feel the sauce all over my face but I don’t care.

Jack comes to me and gently wipes my face, “Well, I know you wanted to try work on that book again but skip it. Let’s rather go sit on the couch and do nothing all night, okay?”

I nod. Doing nothing sounds like what I need and Jack always knows exactly what I need. Besides tomorrow is another day.

I have other manuscripts that need writing and marketing that needs to happen! I'm posting new graphics in July so feel free to comment and let me know what you think!
